The author's hands... or the editor's hands? I feel for Hori, because we'll never know just how much of these writing blunders are because he wanted to, or because his editor wanted him to. And then there's the matter of suffering burnout and wanting to wrap up a series asap, quality be damned. BNHA could have been excellent, but it became mega mainstream and as such Hori is probably forced to write what will become popular, not what's good.
Well...

I think it’s hard to speculate because of the above, lol. Regarding the phrase “hand of the author”, there’s no real blame being assigned--it’s a phrase meaning that the developments do not feel natural and feel like writer machinations regardless of who is actually holding the puppet strings. For some specific blame, like, I think Shindou is clearly editorial interference, but on the whole it doesn’t really matter because I’m not evaluating Horikoshi’s quality necessarily with such a statement, just saying this part of the story seems to be clunky in execution.
I also don’t think editors will completely divert a story from its original endgame (which we know Hori has) just for the popularity; BNHA is on the most part thematically consistent rather than empty (which is the worst result of puppet writing). I’d just like it to feel more flowy and natural, which this current arc does not, but I’ve thought the same about other arcs as well (funnily enough, all arcs around the start of new centennials of the story). Critique is one of my fun places (yeah I know that makes me a real joy to be around) though, so.

i have class in 4 hours and im behaving clownishly. but i need to let my thoughts out
the discourse about afo and yoichis relationship has been driving me nuts on twt. it is worthy examining their relationship to be incestual and the fact people can’t distinguish incest as a narrative theme from shipping is insane. it doesn’t change the underlying narrative of their relationship and it is not stretch to think of it that way. if yoichi was a woman this would be a lot easier for people to grasp!
bnha covers themes like this consistently!! grooming and child abuse are overarching plot points for several arcs, and sexual abuse has been hinted at more than once. it is a disservice to the (imo) very nuanced and fleshed out relationship of afo and his brother, to overlook the most obvious element of incest and abuse.
not ONLY is it an obvious theme, the thematic importance of family as a microcosm of society has played a major part in the story since its conception. so many stories in the series revolve around the corruption of the family structure. afos story being incestual and by extension the most jarring of that corruption is a clever execution for his story!!!!!
its not about shipping!!!!!!!!!!! its a theme and part of the overarching plot between them and is not a stretch at all and wanting to discuss it in that way is not weird!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

like what other context is there for these panels!!! call a spade a spade!!!!
