The Buontalenti Grotto by Bernardo Buontalenti and the Grotta di Madama by Davide Fortini at the Giardino di Boboli, Palazzo Pitti, Florence. As if the Boboli gardens were not magical enough without these beautiful grottos which embellish the idyllic and mythical Italian garden of the Pitti Palace. Never have I ever seen such magnificent gardens, with its glorious Fountain of Neptune, the folly that is the Fontana del Bacchino, and The Isolotto. The Boboli Gardens: the scent of places is very resonant and triggering: particularly box hedge and pine trees in the hot sun. I remember going for a walk in the Boboli Gardens on my first trip around Italy when I was sixteen and, on that occasion, being pleased to find the monumental bust of Hadrian that was illustrated in my Dorling-Kindersley guide to Italy. So I was pleased to re-discover it today, although not the mimosa trees I remember encountering there. Memory is a strange thing: I’ve definitely been back to the Pitti Palace since, but I think not for twenty years, and now I’m wondering if I also visited in my twenties. But my memory is mixed up with the memory of seeing John Singer Sargent’s watercolours of the fountains and potted orange trees in an exhibition at the Royal Academy, so much so that I can’t remember which I saw first...
