Sorry I have to write this because I was really hoping I wouldn't. Some of you might have read me venting about boiler issues over the past 6-7 months.
Basically, our boiler was condemned by our insurance company who said they would no longer repair it, and they could offer us an *incredible* £750 towards a new boiler if we used a specific supplier. This supplier wanted to charge us £5,500 for the job, and we, naturally, didn't have £4,750 lying around to spend. So we tried British Gas who came and gave us a quote...again for over £5000 because we'd need to pay for scaffolding, and this time without the £750 towards it from the insurance. Since then our boiler has started actively leaking and my mornings start with emptying the bucket that sits underneath. As a hail Mary I tried another local supplier this week who visited us yesterday. He's quoted us for a replacement boiler at £2500 which is arguably much more manageable. Through saving up and some extremely generous donations when I first ranted about the boiler, we've managed to save £1000. We were hoping that Home Energy Scotland would be able to provide a loan to cover the remaining £1500, but they have changed their policy to exclude gas boilers, and they ruled we weren't eligible for the Warmer Home Scotland fund as we don't receive benefits. I know it's the worst time of year to ask because it's an expensive time, but if any of you happen to need anything read to you by a Scottish guy or want your Scottish character's dialogue checked, please consider commissioning me on Ko-Fi.

Out of curiosity, as always you're at liberty not to answer this, how much will it cost to repair your boiler?
Unfortunately I don't know yet. I've spoken to the insurance company that says they'll only contribute £750 and that it'll cost "more on top" Then they want us to pay for a roofer, an electrician, and the scaffolding. Hopefully we get some sort of deal but I don't have a full breakdown of costs and literally anything extra I earn is going into a 'urgent home fund' So if anyone would like to commission any work, now would be a great time!

(I mean, if we ... get those answers).
Currently we're roundabouts "Golden Age of Piracy", just without a couple of the key things that allowed for it (namely, better navigational tools popularized and made difficult voyages easier), and seeing Northern Thedas really just confirms we're bursting at the seams here for an explosion of invention likely courtesy of Bianca and Dagna and Dorian and others. Hell, we've got smokeless coal, that's a hell of a great start.

Depending on how far we wanna stretch it or fill in the gaps with magic, other reasonable inventions that could/should happen relatively soon: firearms; cameras; indoor lighting whether gas or magic; bicycles; boilers; machine-woven linens; steel architecture; early motion pictures; indoor environmental control (heated floors/radiators, hand-crank or however-powered fans) ; personal vehicles; barges; typewriters; fountain pens; printing press/magical mass materials reproduction/whatever idk newspapers and magazines and pamphlets everywhere, explosion in fiction and the general written word; wax recordings and vinyl records!!! leisure music!!!
just!!! one teensy tiny little nudge, just a decade or two or five, and all of Thedas is wholly different. And this isn't even touching on potential sociopolitically-driven inventions, spurred by war and necessity, this is just what's feasibly in range based on current utd Thedas canon, and the simple early explorations of physicists and chemists (and farmers and everyday people) and those resulting inventions are surely within reach of mages playing with and inventing fucking time magic.
