Here's a quiz: the soil has been washed out on this ficus salicaria for most of this year, yet it's lush, healthy, green, and actively growing. The pot is only about 1/2" (12-1/2mm) deep on the inside. Here's a good exercise. Willow leaf ficus. Look at the first branch on the right, close up in second pic. The question: should it be lowered? The growth habit, as is, could be considered natural; a branch started growing up, and it shot up fast but then the top grew in, changing the branches growth habit out to the side to catch the sun. Leave it like it is or we could use the saw and turnbuckle technique to move it down to a more harmonious position? 34 #seedlings salvaged today from the 2018 pomace pile, having survived a full year with no irrigation and strong deer pressure. They came up with roots safe in intact dirt clods, which I’m not messing with to minimize root stress. Open-pollinated seeds from mostly #WicksonCrab #GoldenRusset and #NewtownPippin, with some #Mettais, #Domaines, #ReineDesPommes, #MarieMenard and #MuscadetteDeDieppe. #KatherineCrabapple is so scab-prone yet scab-tolerant that its bark is one big beautiful canker. This young grafted branch is growing happily, no dead bits, but the bark already looks ancient. First year wood is smooth, but has plenty early scab legions. Rooting around the nursery last night, looking for something to work on, I found this dwarf schefflera. Chopped it down, sawed the roots, and stuck it in the pot.
