So our first base was in Bergamo. A most atmospheric town. If you are in love you must go there. The same if you like stairs and funiculars. The lower station of the first funicular may be crowded and there could be a line of people (you should use the bus if this is the situation) but one morning it was just me, the conductor and his buddy.

I feel that in a couple of years Bergamo may be overridden by tourists, now it were mostly Central European ones and blond people.

Bergamo - Città Alta

Luckily the former Casa Littoria was open to the public for a boring exhibition. However you couldn't really enjoy the Affresco celebritivo per Antonio Locatelli because they put some reflectors next to it that just blinded you.

From Bergamo you can go to Como by train. You must change in Milano or Monza, but you will arrive in a couple of hours.

You can't visit Terragni's building, but the Guardia di Finanza people will let you step in and take a photo like this:

Also in Como you can observe some interesting half measures at the stadium in front of the monument for the fallen ones, where at the main gate (?) the fasces were made unrecognizable but were left untouched at the other gate.

Also from Bergamo you can reach Milano in about an hour. We went there only because my other half wanted to see the Duomo. So I didn't research any rationalist buildings because there were too many.

However just going from the cathedral to a pasta place unwillingly went through the Piazza San Sepolcro and bumped into interesting architecture. Also from the top of the cathedral you can see that brutalist building that you have already seen on this hellsite.

If it wasn't raining we probably wouldn't go into the Camparino in Galleria (but luckily it did):

You must really go and drink some Campari with seltzer.

After Bergamo we moved our base to Brescia (also around one hour distance by train). So what to do in Brescia? Besides the architecture We are interested in there is a photographic machinery museum (free entrance) and the Vittoria alata.

Until October you can se the Boxer at Rest next to her, so to double the aesthetic pleasures.

Also in Brescia you could do some rationalist grocery shopping.

Since in Como I opposed to getting on a boat I had to compensate with a tour of the Isola del Garda owned by the Borghese Cavazzas.

So you are there, you learn about the family's history and you come home. And after a few days you realize that Junio Valerio Borghese's grandmother was Hungarian (blows your mind).

From Brescia you can go to the Vittoriale in Gardone Riviera by bus. This was the time when I learnt an Italian craft. If there isn't a machine to validate your bus or train ticket or it isn't working then you simply write the date and time on it with a pen.

Not much to say about the Vittoriale. I wish all of my dear mutuals to go there. Be aware: the water in the fountain is luke warm. Better drink a Cedrata Tassoni if you are around the lake (also if you want to be in style). When you leave the Vittoriale, then you should go to the small souvenir shop in the small square. They have cheap cold water, interesting souvenirs and curious liqueurs (like one made from pine).

Last day in Brescia. You can still make some culinary discoveries like the capù scapàt that I enjoyed so much. Cabbage leaves filled with a mix of breadcrumbs and cheese.

At the Risorgimento museum there was one more discovery waiting. A copy of a bust made by Adolfo Wildt.

Have seen pizza just one time. Eaten none.

Un’ultima escursione in barca chiude simbolicamente una stagione turistica importante, quella del 2018, che ha portato tante novità e consolidato sempre più legami verso il sogno dei tre soci di GardaLanding Sebin Pinackatt, Giacomo Ballerini e Alessio Priante: del lago di Garda Unico, integrando la parte dell’Alto Mantovano.

L’unione di più forze ha permesso di trascorrere una giornata interessante sotto il profilo culturale e di informazione grazie alla collaborazione di Claudio Francioso, rappresentante del Consorzio Motoscafisti Sirmione e alla contessa Alberta Cavazza che ha aperto le porte della sua incantevole villa in stile neo gotico-veneziano a operatori del turismo, politici locali e giornalisti nel pomeriggio di venerdì 19 ottobre.

Diversi sono stati i custodi dell’Isola del Garda nel corso dei secoli. Lapidi Gallico-Romane che sono state trovate in loco e donate al museo di Brescia dal conte Luigi Lechi colloca la vita in quella zona già al tempo dei romani. Fu anche dimora per i frati che non abbandonarono quelle terre nonostante le incursioni mantovane, bresciane e veronesi. Dal 1685 al 1697 fu un convento di noviziato dove i frati si ritiravano. Napoleone soppresse il monastero ormai vetusto nel 1797. I diversi proprietari furono Gian Battista Corner, i fratelli Benedetti, Giovanni Fiorentini, Luigi Lechi. Nel 1860 fu espropriata dalla Stato e assegnata all’esercito ma tra il 1880 e il 1900 dei nuovi proprietari duca Gaetano de Ferrari e l’arciduchessa Maria Annenkof la riportarono alla luce. Alla famiglia Cavazza – Borghese passò nel 1927 e oggi è abitata da tre fratelli, una coppia di giardinieri e due custodi

“Siamo partiti da zero, quando l’isola non era assolutamente quella che voi avete visto oggi perché stava cascando a pezzi il palazzo, il giardino non era ben tenuto e ha subito circa vent’anni di abbandono – ha raccontato la contessa -. Eravamo tutti troppo giovani per sapere cosa fare, ma nel 2001 abbiamo deciso di aprire al pubblico. Sono 18 anni che porto le persone all’isola, siamo sempre in evoluzione e in crescita. È una piccola perla in mezzo al nostro lago molto delicata che va anche tutelata. Per questo c’è un equilibrio per quello che è il rispetto della sua storia e della sua cultura e quello che è il bisogno per fare tutte le opere di restauro. Stiamo portando delle novità per un turismo culturale attento, oltre a puntare sulle serate astronomiche dove i ragazzini con le loro famiglie possono guardare le stelle o anche la caccia al tesoro botanica”.

Un accordo di interesse culturale, storico e di voglia di non perdere l’enorme patrimonio del lago di Garda è quello che ha unito il Consorzio dei Motoscafisti Sirmione con la contessa e GardaLanding. Vivere sul lago e per il lago significa anche questo.

“Per noi la navigazione è a 360°, abbiamo oltre 40 barche di diverse dimensioni e il nostro obiettivo è quello di tenere vivo il lavoro che abbiamo ereditato, quello dei barcaioli – ha raccontato Francioso -. La nostra filosofia è che il turista è un ospite e va trattato bene. Quello che è importante è trasmettere la nostra storia”.

E proprio su questa onda, sul voler promuovere il lago di Garda che Pinackatt, Ballerini e Priante hanno scommesso in grande quando a inizio stagione hanno regalato un nuovo strumento gratuito per la connessione e la promozione turistica.

“Abbiamo accettato una sfida importante: quella di portare la gente da Peschiera del Garda all’Isola e siamo riusciti a farlo diventare un servizio regolare – hanno spiegato i soci di GardaLanding -. Il nostro obiettivo è quello di creare sempre più sinergie per ottenere un Garda Unico, per tutti. Stiamo raccogliendo le esigenze dell’Alto Mantovano e del basso Garda veronese e bresciano sia degli operatori turistici sia delle realtà istituzionali, per poter lavorare a un nuovo progetto per il territorio”

Isola del Garda, Isola di Garda, or Isola Borghese is the biggest island on Lake Garda. It is part of the comune of San Felice del Benaco, in the Province of Brescia, Lombardy, Italy. The island has a long and varied history, having been used as a Roman burial ground, pirate lair, a site for a Franciscan monastery, border fortification and as a residential villa. The island has been visited by numerous famous people over the centuries, reportedly including Francis of Assisi, Anthony of Padua and Dante Alighieri. Today, it is covered by a park and is dominated by the Venetian neo-Gothic Villa Borghese Cavazza. Although privately owned by the Cavazza family, Isola del Garda has been open to visitors since 2002.
