I first read these books when I was in middle school. I didn't notice all the religious (or lack of) implications at the time. I was thoroughly lost in Lyra's world. I would have loved my very own daemon! This series mixes it's own brand of magic, with a steam punk feel and a lot of adventure tossed in. Her ability to travel between world's was unexpected at the time. Have you read His Dark Materials?
