Saddening that such an inspiring author and literary critic didn’t get much more than his three score and ten when I’m sure he had so much more to get down on the page. I can only imagine the frustration and injustice he must have felt when he learned his time was nigh but at least he had the consolation of knowing how much pleasure and insight he had already given the world with his words. If you are interested in writing yourself but haven’t yet read ‘Money’ or ‘The War Against Cliche’ then you really should. I have always regarded this ‘enfant terrible’ as not just an entertainer but also a teacher. And a funny one at that. Godspeed Mr. Amis, sir.

ENDEARINGLY LITERATE SONGWRITERS WHOSE “FUN” BAND NAME *MAY* HAVE MUTED THEIR POPULARITY, no. 4. Who knows, that’s a great name for a band where the leader writes songs based on #MartinAmis novels and stuff. There’s no way to overstate how important some of these songs are to our family, when I was putting them on mix CDs for the minivan when the kids were young, “Plea from a Cat Named Virtute” especially. It’s on a mix of songs that tell stories (alongside Johnny B. Goode and Space Oddity and Ode to Billy Joe, et al) and so often, so often I’ve been driving around five weeping people, each of us trying to hide from the others that ONCE AGAIN we were unable to make it through the bridge without stifling sobs. I dare all of you reading now, listen to the cat sing, “I know you’re strong” without a lump in your throat. Every time. Anyway. My wife went on errands so I turned this up really loud and the guitars are just so big and the lyrics so elusive and sad and catchy. This is one of my favorite albums I forget when discussing my favorite albums. I loved @macrolit.books new tag #sixthatsuck and decided to play along. I think it's supposed to be books that everyone loves but you hate but I decided to do the worst 6 books I've read since joining #bookstagram. Oddly enough, 3 were buddy reads with @drumminonthecover. (Hope you don't mind @finnishthosebooks, but I stole your idea of the cardboard book for the one I don't own 😉) ~ ⛪To a God Unknown ⛪ Love everything Steinbeck but hated this one. I think he was still trying to figure things out when he wrote it. So full of obvious symbolism and it makes no sense. ~ 🔥 Doctor Faustus 🔥 This book could have been 100 pages instead of 700+. ~ 👂Adjustment Day 👂 Disjointed with too many characters, repetition and loose ends. ~ 📍 Find Me 📍 Repetitive and obvious on the whole complete with manic pixie dream girl trope, unnatural monologues, and constant spelling of everything out. ~ 💰 Money 💰 Just no. ~ 💡 Everything is illuminated 💡 Everything was not illuminated.
