Seriously...
Do you all realize the power I'm going to possess? What I will be LEGALLY authorized to do someday?
Imagine you are one of the hundreds of people who received a reply from me with the dreadful, magic words "I will personally ensure it", for a moment.
Imagine that no amount of arguing, deathly staring, yelling, or slapping will convince you to repent. Mmmm. That wouldn't be good for you.
Because now imagine you are tied to a chair, immobile. There are wires attached to various spots on your body. Electrodes. Like the machines in the Milgram experiment. Except, real. And somehow even more painful than an ordinary shock. Thanks to some futuristic technology.
Imagine that by merely turning a dial, someone could cause you the most harrowing physical pain any human being has ever felt. For as long as that person wished to cause you pain. Days, weeks, months, years...an entire f*cking lifetime of nothing but pain, pain, pain, pain, pain, pain, pain...with pauses here and there, merely to ACCENTUATE the pain.
Does that sound like something you'd be willing to risk, just to try to demoralize or discredit or disrupt me? Is playing mind games with me worth a lifetime in Hell? How about an eternity? Still worth the risk?
How could a Good God be okay with torture?
Well, one could argue that life itself is a type of torture. If one were an abject cynic. The Buddhists aren't totally wrong. Life = Suffering. So, for God to spare people from suffering and torture MIGHT illogically lead to God killing everyone to spare them the heartaches and headaches of life. Which is absurd. That's why there is no commandment against torture.
In fact, a huge percentage of my wisdom, of anybody's wisdom, is gained by enduring tortures, mundane little tortures, occasionally big tortures. So, in a way, strapping someone in a chair and filling every fiber of their body with maximum pain would just be a shortcut to wisdom, right? Sounds like a plausible enough theory to me. I'd practically be doing people a favor, when you think about it. Growing, or rather, REGROWING, their souls. I'd probably be owed a thank you card at the end of it, provided they finally have a moral breakthrough.
If you don't believe I'm God, okay, fine.
But you've heard of Pascal's Wager before, right?
Consider this Chandler's Wager:
I bet you'll gamble on me being God.
In so far as you will avoid the risk of everlasting misery.
You will if you're smart, anyway.
Or even better, if you're wise.
Very easy to be wise.
Dogs can be wise, even.

Those who once served (or still do serve) the Garlean Empire may recognise Felix as the bastard daughter of a renowned hunter, and as a skilled hunter herself.
Those who were deeply involved in the Garlean military may recognise her as a tracker and interrogator. And I mean ‘deeper than the black abyss of the ocean’ deep.
She does in fact have siblings-- several, some with the same parents, some with only the same father or mother. She’s never met any of them and uncertain whether this is true, but has her suspicions.
Her services as a tracker are offered in exchange for reasonable payment; gil, food, supplies, whatever someone has to offer that she could use, she’ll accept.
What will she track? Beasts, lost items, information, whatever. Who will she track? Depends on how much you’re willing to offer.

tragic star: rudolph valentino - an analysis
“Women are not in love with me but with the picture of me on the screen. I am merely the canvas on which women paint their dreams.” - Rudolph Valentino
He came to America from Italy penniless; he died 31 years later in New York City, a heart-throb known to millions as Rudolph Valentino. He didn’t even need to talk in order to exert his power over the opposite gender. He was loved by the opposite sex just as fiercely as he was hated by his own. The beginning and end of his appeal was sex. Sounds like someone else I know... Mixing the wildly sensual with the genteel romantic, he earned a fortune and lived lavishly but died in debt. He succeeded beyond his wildest dreams but, because of his “metrosexuality”, he never won the approval of America's macho mainstream. It was never clear whether the actor was straight, gay or bisexual as many of his romantic affairs had occurred with notorious lesbians. He was turned down for many parts because he looked "too foreign." The combination of beauty and an early death can transform any star into a legend. But Valentino was more than just a star to begin with. We're talking about something more than standard-issue Hollywood-style charisma. Valentino's hold on his public sets him apart, pushes him into a supernova realm shared only with incandescents like Garbo and Monroe. However, in real life, intimates describe Valentino as a dull (Taurus sun), superficial (Libra moon) personality; a maddeningly callow but lovable man. My view of him is that of a sensual Taurus man who rose from Italian immigrant to American heartthrob, challenged a nation's image of masculinity and was both thrilled and tortured by his own fame.
Tumblr media
Rudolph Valentino, according to astrotheme, was a Taurus sun and Libra moon. He was born Rodolfo Guglielmi in 1895 in a farmhouse in Castellaneta, southern Italy. His antipathy fro other males seemed to start from infancy; as a very good-looking child, his mother coddled and spoiled him whilst his father disapproved of him. As a teenager, seeking work in his native country was a futile excercise, so he left his native Italy with nothing and headed to America to find gainful employment. He eventually found work as a dancer for money (taxi-dancer) at upscale dinner clubs in New York City. His arrest in a brothel raid as a result of a sensational murder didn’t help his image any either. A friend in New York had encouraged him to seek a career in films, and shortly after his arrival in California he was introduced to an enclave of film workers. He landed his first, low-paid part as an extra on the production Alimony, but found it difficult to locate consistent film work due to looking “too foreign.” Such looks were desirable for villains, but those parts were already filled by well-established actors. Valentino managed to subsist on “bit” parts for much of the next two years, though landing parts had not gotten easier; the film industry had greatly decreased production during WWI and the Spanish Flu dampened public activity. As the close of the decade arrived, the Roaring 20’s began and film production resumed in earnest. Rudolph impulsively married fellow actress Jean Acker in 1919, but the marriage dissolved after less than a month after it was established that she was a lesbian and needded the marriage to deflect attention from this fact (as well as the fact that she was involved in a love triangle with actresses Alla Nazimova and Grace Darmond). He eventually remarried to a Nazimova acolyte named Natacha Rambova. Under her guidance, he was transformed into the greatest cinematic lover of his time. Handicapped by an underdeveloped chest, weak vision, a lazy left eye and cauliflowered left ear, the actor had enough smoldering camera presence to graduate from heavies to romantic leads. The studios insisted that his dark skin be bleached white and that he keep out of the sun to avoid looking too black for pictures. Luckily for Valentino, his foreign good looks eventually won him a breakout role in The Four Horseman of the Apocalypse in 1921. The film was a box office smash, and Valentino’s reputation as a “latin lover” was sealed. Unfortunately, many resented the control Rambova held over the image and career of her husband, saying that the relationship cast doubt on Valentino’s “manliness.” Valentino, whose ideas about marriage were essentially those of the “old world,” eventually buckled under the pressure of these accusations and he and Rambova were divorced. Valentino spent the remainder of his brief career trying to reestablish his masculine image.
By 1926, Valentino had reached the pinnacle of his career – he was undoubtedly one of the world’s most famous men. At the young age of 31, he collapsed suddenly while in New York and was rushed into surgery for a gastric ulcer and appendicitis. Even though Valentino seemed to be recovering well, he later lapsed into a coma and died 8 days later from an infection, though it was rumored to be from arsenic poisoning. His funeral was a public spectacle attended by fans and Hollywood Stars alike. Thousands of young women turned out to mourn Valentino at his funeral and some reportedly killed themselves in despair when they heard the news. But while America’s daughters were sobbing, many American men were delighted to see the back of him. Jealousy, to me, is always amusing and flattering. However, there were those whose jealousy, immaturity, and insecurity devolved into something more serious, and as such, chose to undermine the image of the screen’s Great Lover. The common chorus from these individuals consisted of snide and catty allusions to his supposed effeminacy. Movie acting was not considered to be a macho career, but worse, Valentino was a dancer as well, and in those days, that was tantamount to homosexuality in a lot of men’s eyes. His (male) detractors never failed to bring up his New York City past as a dancer-for-hire. Like all extraordinary creatures who are larger-than-life, he will be remembered as much for what was said about him as what he did. The gossip is often prurient, but Valentino deserves to be remembered as a man who provoked great passion – and inspired some extraordinary storytelling. He wanted a happy marriage but went through two nasty divorces. In the end, this was a man who was not comfortable with himself; he never really grew up or knew himself very well, and as such, was quite despondent over his detractors‘ very vicious ad hominem attacks. He was so wounded and devastated by the talk of a bunch of jealous, faceless, cowardly men who didn’t know him that it wound up killing him. Ultimately, the emotion I’m left with is frustration that such a legend is nothing more than a self-pitying Hollywood cliche who whines, “I do not think one woman in my life has ever loved me deeply, sincerely. The great lover — loved by all but his loves.” Hm. Perhaps it was his Libra moon.
Next week, I’ll talk about a very intriguing actress, also in silent films, who went by the name of Lulu: Scorpio Louise Brooks.

Overall personality snapshot: Was he an idealistic artist or an artistic philosopher? Was he an incurable romantic who was searching for permanent love, but who kept finding beautiful human beings less than ideal? Whatever his walk of life, the principles of justice and harmony featured strongly in all he did. He wanted to get to grips with ideas and translate his vision of Utopia into a realistic proposition, but probably discovered the necessity for compromise. This may have disillusioned him at first, but later it would become central to the way he operated. Innately sociable and convivial, he was genuinely interested in other people and indeed needed large amounts of kindness and affection. He wanted the best for everyone but he made sure that he did not skimp on himself. He thrived in beautiful surroundings and in the company of elegant minds. An innately aesthetic person, and probably quite romantic as well, he brought a genuine warmth and lively concern to all social gatherings, which made him downright flirtatious sometimes. If he was an artist, he’d probably create works of art that were good enough to eat; if he was a chef, dishes that are works of art. Whatever he did, his creations would have expressed his innate sense of harmony, beauty and style.
A lively social conscience is another aspect of this combination, as well as an awareness of the importance of education in the healthy development of the individual and of society. He was attracted to progressive ideas that asserted the inalienable rights of every human being, and he could accept the paradoxical fact that everyone is different and yet the same. Everyone has different talents and preferences, and yet everyone has the same fundamental needs: a full stomach, a roof over their heads and lots of love. He believed in a society that respected both material needs and high moral values, and his social instinct and pragmatic perseverance may have taken him into social-welfare work or the political arena where he could express his power and idealism (if he wasn’t an actor). He learned how to make others see the intelligence of his thinking by first listening to and valuing their thinking on the subject. But he probably had a diplomatic knack of making sure the substance of his view prevailed. And he could really impress with the practicality of his approach: he can economize with flair and use the resources to hand. Waste not, want not, was his motto. He also knew that a happy, convivial, relaxed atmosphere was the most conducive to constructive communication and compromise. Conflict was anathema to his being and he employed his natural diplomatic skills to overcome antagonism in any setting – with the sheer force of his magnetic personality.
He was extremely attractive and had a warm and charming nature. His features were refined, his bones delicate and his skin fair. His movements were very graceful. He was practical, steady and patient, but he could  be inflexible in his views. One thing he did have was plenty of common sense and good powers of concentration, although he tended to think that purely abstract thought was a waste of time. His thought processes weren’t as quick as others, but his decisions were made with a lot of thought behind them. He had an excellent memory, and he was quite sensitive about his reputation. Career issues brought out and exposed his feelings and emotions. Often he looked to the world to mother him through the welfare state. He had an enormous hunger for human companionship, and he hoped that it’d fulfill all his desires. He needed love and emotion, and his sense of compassion led him to help others, as he was very protective. However he could sink down into the depths of self-pity at times, although normally he was of good humour. He didn’t react well to a hostile and competitive environment, in fact he preferred to stick to private endeavours where he could protect himself. He was quick to go on the defensive, rather than the offensive, when dealing with adversaries and adverse situations. He had a strong sense of purpose and was very sincere.
He had strong reserves and a powerful sense of purpose. He was very serious when he set about achieving something, not wasting his time with useless efforts. He had enormous expectations of himself and of other people, and could be an extremely hard taskmaster. Sometimes he could lack flexibility and have a tendency to brood. He expected appreciation for his efforts and seek retribution if his trust was violated. Although he had great depth of feeling, he may have had enormous difficulty in expressing it. In actual fact, he may have found it easier living and, more especially, working where there is the least emotional involvement possible. He may have felt so apprehensive about living up to expectations in his romantic affairs, that he experienced temporary impotence or frigidity. He was part of a generation that was more honest about subjects such as death, sex and the spiritual continuity of life. As such, he wasn’t afraid to ask questions, because he wasn’t afraid of the answers he might receive. As a member of this generation, he tended to have an all or nothing personality with powerful emotions seething just below the surface (which is evident in the dark brooding characters he played). As a member of the Gemini Neptune generation, his restless mind pushed him to explore new intellectual fields, which produced many works of genius. He loved communication and the occult and was likely also fascinated by metaphysical phenomena and astrology. As a Gemini Plutonian, he was mentally restless and willing to examine and change old doctrines, ideas and ways of thinking. As a member of this generation, he showed an enormous amount of mental vitality, originality and perception. Traditional customs and taboos were examined and rejected for newer and more original ways of doing things. As opportunities with education expanded, he questioned more and learned more. As a member of this generation, having more than one occupation at a time would not have been unusual to him.
Love/sex life: Unlike most with Mars in Cancer, he could be reasonable about sex. He was aware of his special sexual allure and his innate sensuality and he was determined to make intelligent use of these gifts. At first glance he seemed to have a lighter, more flexible and less conservative approach to sex but, in reality, he was just as deeply cautious and serious about these matters as are most with Mars in Cancer. People who came to him looking for nothing more than a good time would be shocked at how quickly his frivolous overtures can transform into deep, obsessive passions. Like all lovers of this type, relationships were very important to him and a sense of mutual commitment was essential to your enjoyment of sex. When he was in a relationship that didn’t touch his heart he could appear to be very clever and in control but when he found the right person, the person who could truly answer all his emotional needs and quiet all his insecurities then he became like all the others with Mars in Cancer—a happy slave to his feelings.
minor asteroids and points:
North Node: Pisces
Lilith: Pisces
Vertex: Aries
Fortune: Aquarius
East Point: Libra
His North Node in Pisces dictated that he needed to develop his emotions and overall sensitivity. He needed to try to be less critical and demanding of both himself and others. His Lilith in Pisces was a powerful muse in his life as an innovative male thinker; he was dangerously attracted to women who were natural born mystics and cultivated their own myth. His Vertex in Aries, 7th house dictated that he reflected the needs and desires that he secretly yearned to have satisfied in a relationship with another. There was a deep desire for raw, unbridled passion. The internal drama which he experienced involved an obsessive lust for true adventure and excitement, exploring new territories in a hell-bent and determined way to get what he was driven toward, no matter what the consequences to others in his life. There was an extreme repulsion for routine of any sort when it came to intimacy. He was a true pioneer as far as sexuality went - there was always something greener as the phrase goes. He was always in a partnership of one kind or another (if only in his head), desperately seeking one, or have decided that it wasn’t worth the risk since his expectations would never be met. There’s a sense that he wasn’t really complete unless he was intimately involved with someone. On some levels there was an irrational fear of ending up alone. The dark side was that he could get highly self-righteous about acceptable modes of behaviour in interacting with others and thereby alienated the very people he longed for.
His Part of Fortune in Aquarius and Part of Spirit in Leo dictated that his destiny lay in opening his mind and experiencing unique and unconventional life experiences. Happiness and fulfillment came from following pursuits that were idealistic, innovative and unique. This was especially so where there was a humanitarian benefit to his efforts. His soul’s purpose asked him to take a prominent position in life as a leader of some sort. He felt spiritual connections and the spark of the divine when he stepped forward into the spotlight and performed. East Point in Libra dictated that he was more identified with the need for a one-to-one relationship with another. Equality, harmony, justice, fair play and a sense of even-handedness were likely to be basic parts of his identity. He chose to relate in a cooperative way (and the extreme to be avoided is playing doormat, appeasing the other person). He also selected (consciously or unconsciously) competitive relationships and engaged in a series of game-playing (literally and figuratively) associations.
elemental dominance:

He was communicative, quick and mentally agile, and he liked to stir things up. He was likely a havoc-seeker on some level. He was oriented more toward thinking than feeling. He carried information and the seeds of ideas. Out of balance, he lived in his head and could be insensitive to the feelings of others. But at his best, he helped others form connections in all spheres of their daily lives. He had high sensitivity and elevation through feelings. His heart and his emotions were his driving forces, and he couldn’t do anything on earth if he didn’t feel a strong effective charge. He needed to love in order to understand, and to feel in order to take action, which caused a certain vulnerability which he should (and often did) fight against.
modality dominance:
cardinal
He was happiest when he was doing anything new (in his case, it was beginning new partnerships), and he loved to begin new ventures. He enjoyed the challenge of claiming territory. He tended to be an initiator—and a bit territorial as well. Also, he had a tendency to start more things than he could possibly finish.

His ambition in relation to the outside world, the identity he wished to achieve in regard to the community at large, and his career aspirations were all themes that were emphasized throughout his life. All matters outside the home, his public image and reputation were very important to him. His attitude to people in authority, and how he viewed the outside world, as well as the influence of his mother and his own attitude to her was highlighted. Traveling, whether physically across the globe, on a mental plane or expanding through study was a major theme in his life. He was not only concerned with learning facts, but also wanted to understand the connections formed between them and the philosophies and concepts they stood for. His conscience, as well as foreign travel, people and places was also of paramount importance in his life. He loved the totality of the human experience and embraced the whole cycle of human life, including birth, sex and death. His darker side, and the complexes and emotions that he preferred to keep hidden, even from himself was a theme throughout his life. His ability to undergo deep personal transformations and spiritual regeneration was also highlighted.
planet dominants:
Jupiter
Venus
Moon
He had luck, and believed in expansion, integration, and growth. He could also be excessive and lazy. He reached out beyond himself and expanded his consciousness. He loved travel, was fairly religious, and liked to integrate himself into the larger social order—church or religion, community, and corporation. He was romantic, attractive and valued beauty, had an artistic instinct, and was sociable. He had an easy ability to create close personal relationships, for better or worse, and to form business partnerships. He was defined by his inner world; by his emotional reactions to situations, how emotions flowed through him, motivating and compelling him—or limiting him and holding his back. He held great capacity to become a part of the whole rather than attempting to master the parts. He wanted to become whatever it is that he sought.
sign dominants:
Cancer
Libra
Gemini
At first meeting, he seemed enigmatic, elusive. He needed roots, a place or even a state of mind that he could call his own. He needed a safe harbor, a refuge in which to retreat for solitude. He was generally gentle and kind, unless he was hurt. Then he could become vindictive and sharp-spoken. He was affectionate, passionate, and even possessive at times. He was intuitive and was perhaps even psychic. Experience flowed through him emotionally. He was often moody and always changeable; his interests and social circles shifted constantly. He was emotion distilled into its purest form. He loved beauty in all its guises—art, literature, classical music, opera, mathematics, and the human body. He usually was a team player who enjoyed debate but not argument. He was, at his best, an excellent strategist and a master at the power of suggestion. Even though he was likely a courteous, amiable person, he was definitely not a pushover. He tried to use diplomacy and intelligence to get what he wanted. He ventured out to see what else was there and seized upon new ideas that expanded his community. His innate curiosity kept him on the move. He used his rational, intellectual mind to explore and understand his personal world. He needed to answer the single burning question in his mind: why? This applied to most facets of his life, from the personal to the impersonal. This need to know sent him off to foreign countries, where his need to explore other cultures and traditions ranked high. He was changeable and often moody. This meant that he was often at odds with himself—the mind demanding one thing, the heart demanding the opposite. To someone else, this internal conflict often manifested as two very different people.
Read more about him under the cut.
Born Rodolfo Pietro Filiberto Rafaele Guglielmi in 1895 to a French mother and Italian father, he grew up in his birthplace of southern Italy. His father died while he was young, and his mother spoiled him. He did poorly in school, and eventually ended up studying agriculture. After a stint in Paris he returned to Italy broke. Many times Valentino referenced something he did being the cause of being sent away. His journey to New York City took place just under 9 months before Jean Valentino would be born. In New York City Valentino met with his Padrino (Godfather) Frank Mennillo who helped him secure a job and a place to live. Eventually Valentino was hired as a taxi dancer (someone who danced with various women in a café for 10 cents a dance). A good looking and gifted dancer he rose above the ranks and began performing for New York society elite. Infatuated and conducting an affair with married society woman Blanca de Saulles he testified in her defense during her divorce trial. Her husband John, a prominent businessman was not pleased and had Valentino arrested on vice charges that to this day are not clear (the records were wiped clean in the 1920's). After surviving this scandal Blanca shot her now ex-husband and Valentino left New York, hoping to avoid a new wave of scandal. He ended up in San Francisco where his Padrino Frank Mennillo had since relocated to. He soon met Norman Kerry who suggested he try his hand at silent films. Valentino headed to Los Angeles on Kerry's advice, and began making the rounds at studios. A deeply exotic and alluring man his type was usually used for 'heavies' or villains. Eventually he eked out a living mostly co-starring in b-rated pictures. During this time his mother died, devastating him. Hoping to recover from this shock he fell in love with fellow small time actress Jean Acker. Acker, a lesbian, was involved in a love triangle with powerful actresses Grace Darmond and Alla Nazimova. Valentino, unaware of her orientation, proposed. Acker accepted seeing it as a safe way out of her conundrum without ruining her career. The two were married at a party and after dancing all night headed for their hotel room. Acker locked Valentino out and the marriage was never consummated. Valentino, not understanding, sent her love letters for months begging her to 'forgive' him for whatever it was he had done, and to be his wife. Eventually it must have been explained to him because he moved on and the pair separated, though not divorced. Soon after this Metro executive June Mathis spotted him in a small part in the Clara Kimball Young film "Eyes of Youth". Mathis was in charge or writing and producing the epic film "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse". She chose the mostly unknown Valentino to play Latin lover Julio. Though executives were hesitant, Mathis eventually got her way. She mentored Valentino and the two became close friends, and possibly were romantic at one time. "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse" was a major success, launching Valentino into super stardom and giving him the image of a 'Latin Lover'. However, his contract with Metro was not in his favor, and they quickly cast him in a b picture, "Uncharted Seas". This was followed by the Nazimova film "Camille" on which Valentino became close with the artistic director, Natacha Rambova. The two fell in love and moved in together, and soon a divorce was acquired from Jean Acker. Without consulting any of his friends, let alone a lawyer, Valentino signed with Famous Players-Lasky again making a paltry salary. Famous Players cast him in perhaps his most famous role "The Sheik" in 1921. The Sheik was a cultural phenomena and much to Valentino's chagrin it was the image most associated with him. Ironically 5 years later it would also be his last film role. Mathis eventually moved to Famous Players where she wrote "The Conquering Power" and "Blood and Sand" for Valentino. "Blood and Sand" was a major hit and the first pairing of Valentino with his most frequent co-star, vamp Nita Naldi. Valentino married Rambova during this time in Mexico, only to return to California and find he had a warrant for bigamy on his head. At the time the law stipulated one must wait one year between divorce and a new marriage, and one year had not passed since his divorce was finalized from Jean Acker. Valentino was thrown in jail over the weekend, with Mathis, George Fitzmaurice, and Thomas Meighan bailing him out on Monday. Famous Players-Lasky did nothing and ordered him back to work on "The Young Rajah". Rambova and Valentino were forced to separate with Rambova being sent to New York. Ironically she still worked on "The Young Rajah" designing costumes. "The Young Rajah" was not a hit, and Valentino was furious over the whole situation. Famous Players-Lasky ordered him to start work on a new film, but he refused and started refusing his salary (despite the fact he was in debt and actually owed the studio money from helping with his divorce). The matter played out in the press and Valentino embarked on a "One Man Strike" from Famous Players-Lasky. Famous Players obtained a court order forbidding him to work at all, though this was eventually was reduced to just work in film. Valentino insisted his strike was not about money but for artistic control, indeed he turned down an offer of $7,000 a week...a huge improvement over his last salary. During this time to keep afloat Valentino wrote a book of poetry, gave interviews, and eventually accepted an offer to promote Minervala Beauty Clay via a dance tour. He also hired former Minervala advertising man S. George Ullman to be his business manager. The tour was a major success and afterwords he and his wife visited Europe. When they returned he signed with Ritz Carlton, though he still owed 2 films to Famous Players. His comeback picture, "Monsieur Beaucaire" was a French action comedy. Rambova had a major hand in the production, and when the film flopped she was blamed. His next film, an artistic Latin Lover feature "A Sainted Devil", also did not fare well. Now free from Famous Players, he and Rambova set upon creating their dream project "The Hooded Falcon". The Hooded Falcon was a disaster, with double the advanced budget spent on costumes alone. After asking Mathis to write a script for the film, Valentino, Rambova, and the director felt it not up to par. Informed by S. George Ullman, Mathis promptly refused to have anything to do with Valentino or Rambova. She ran off and eloped with an Italian cameraman. She would not make up with Valentino until a few months before his death. Eventually The Hooded Falcon was scrapped, and the duo's contract terminated with Ritz Carlton. They had made only one film, a quickie named "Cobra" which also did not perform well. At this time Valentino and Rambova's marriage became strained. Rightly or wrongly, Rambova was blamed for his failures in the press. Reportedly, children was another issue: Valentino desperately wanted children, while Rambova did not. Ironically, the only person to dispute this was Ullman, who constantly feuded with Rambova. A contract from United Artists was offered to Valentino, giving him all sorts of freedoms and a good salary. It has long been said Rambova was stipulated via contract to not be on set or have any involvement in his films with UA, but that is untrue. Rambova was still miffed and Valentino and Ullman offered to finance a film for her that became "What Price Beauty?" She had an affair with her cameraman causing Rudy to vow he would kill the man. Only S. George Ullman could dissuade them. Divorce papers were drawn up and Rambova left for New York. The press assumed she had left then announced the divorce out of the blue, when in reality both knew during their final kiss that a divorce was in the works. Rambova eventually obtained her divorce in France. Valentino was despondent, and contemplated suicide, especially as he was unable to obtain custody of Jean which he tried around this time. He became reckless during this time, almost killing himself in various car accidents. Work began on The Eagle in 1925, pairing him with Vilma Banky. The two became good friends, but it's unlikely they were lovers. The Eagle was a success, and work began on Son of the Sheik, a sequel to the first film. Son of the Sheik was also a success, but sadly Valentino did not live to see much of it. Rudy was not mourning the loss of Rambova however. He was dating Mae Murray and Pola Negri concurrently, as well as several other beauties. This only ended when Mae wed a Mdivani (Pola would later marry his brother.) Valentino had been ill for several months, but refused to see a doctor. In August 1926 the pain was so bad a doctor was called, and he was transferred to a hospital in New York City. He had ulcers, which were operated on. Everyone believed he would be fine, and doctors gave optimistic reports. Valentino himself thought he would recover soon, he asked to be moved back to his hotel with a nurse to attend to him. The doctors refused. A few days after the surgery Valentino took a turn for the worse, his lungs were filled with fluid and infection had set in. He died on August 23rd, 1926 at the age of 31 with Frank Mennillo and S. George Ullman at his side. Everyone was shocked, and though there had been celebrity deaths before his, the public's reaction was extremely intense. S. George Ullman was the executor of his estate. Hoping to help keep Valentino's name in the papers long enough to promote The Son of the Sheik (1926) (Valentino's estate was $3 million in debt, leaving no money to take care of his affairs or even bury him) he decided to allow a public viewing. However the viewing became a madhouse, and Ullman pulled the plug abruptly. A funeral was held in New York. The body was transported across the country to Los Angeles where another funeral was held, and Valentino was buried. June Mathis had a row of crypts at Hollywood Forever Cemetery. She offered to loan Valentino one of her crypts. However she died herself in 1927, and Valentino was moved into what would have been her husband's crypt. In the 1930's, Mathis' husband sold the crypt to the Valentino family, Valentino lies in the 'borrowed' crypt to this day. There were many plans for memorials and statues after his death, however Mathis' death, and the Great Depression put an end to these. Today about 60% of Valentino's films still survive, including his most noteworthy ones. He's still remembered as The Great Lover of the Silver Screen. (x)

Okay, so. Sense8 season 2.
Oh my god. What a ride.
I just finished it in two days. Had to stop at 3am last night because I really couldn’t allow myself to lose more sleep, but otherwise I would’ve binged it for sure. Just finished the last ep and I’ll try to collect my thoughts.
~~SPOILERS~~
I love how this show goes out of its way to have a diverse cast. One of my only complaints about s1 was that although it did show gay men, lesbians and trans people, there were 0 bisexuals. I was kinda sad that even an amazing inclusive show like Sense8 fell victim to bi invisibility, but Zakia came along and fixed it (even though it was only with one sentence... still!). I also like that her being in a relationship with a man isn’t questioned at all. I didn’t think I’d like Capheus in a romantic relationship, but she does seem good for him.
But my favourite new character by far has to be detective Mun. He’s just perfect, so handsome (I felt my heart flutter every moment his face was on screen and seriously panicked when he got hurt) and I ship him and Sun so hard. I am absolutely sure they’re meant to be, even their names are symbolic as hell- sun and moon?! My Zutara heart is weak. And their chemistry is just amazing. Although I think a relationship between the two would be bad for their health, with all that fighting, haha!
Speaking of Zutara... Kala and Wolfgang are still going strong. The bad boy with the heart of gold and the good girl who feels stuck- it’s such a classic trope but I just love it. They’re both so much more than their stereotypes and that makes it work so well. I love how they keep circling each other but their attraction is just too strong. They’re taking their sweet time, but that love confession really was something... I know they’re probably the most popular ship and although I wasn’t that big on them yet in s1, I’m really convinced now. I am SO going to write a crossover fic one day.
I love how Kala got a much more active role this season. Same for Riley. But I still think there is a bit of a heavy focus on Will. It’s like, as progressive and inclusive the show is, it is still somehow obligatory to have a straight white man be the main character. I like Will’s character well enough, and I guess it’s a way to make more people identify with the show, but still. The scene with his dying father was very long and dramatic, and his grief was shown extra heavily too. Which is good television of course, but I feel like Sun’s grief over her father was addressed much briefer. Yes, she had her moment in the cemetery, and it was touching, but it was over rather quickly to give way for her major  albeit super sexy fight scene with Mun. I feel like Will’s grief dragged over a few episodes, while for example Wolfgang’s mother and Chapheus’ father only showed up for 1 flashback. We might get more on that later but it still bothered me. I did love how Will managed to turn the tables on Whispers. Of course his connection with Whispers and Sara Patrell is what drives the plot, but... this show has not 1 but 8 protagonists, and that is what makes it so great. The average American viewer might identify with Will the most, but this show isn’t only viewed by Americans! I was crazy excited to see Holland and even my home town on screen, to see my favourite actors walk where I walk every day! To hear Riley speak my language! That ties fans to a show. Brazil is home to the biggest fanbase- give them more Lito! Don’t portray him only like a drama queen! I really identify with Lito, his struggle with his identity and how overwhelming emotions can be, so I was really annoyed by how his emotions were ridiculed. (Although I liked the idea that he expresses the emotions that Sun cannot.) He doesn’t seem to be as well-rounded as a character compared to some others, but he has such a beautiful personality! I love how he says ‘family’ when he talks to Dani and Hernando. I really hope there won’t be relationship trouble looming for them in LA. They’re so precious, I really want them to be happy. I was kind of hoping he’d ask Hernando to marry him at the Pride, but I guess it’s still too early for him to be comfortable being so ‘out’.
Those who are comfortable being ‘out’ are Nomi and Amanita. I love Amanita’s character, but somehow I’m not a very strong Nomanita shipper. I mean I like them and want them to be happy and teared up at the proposal, but I just don’t feel as strongly about them compared to Hernandito, Sun/Mun and Kalagang. Which is weird because as a wlw girl myself I thought I’d be more excited about a lesbian couple?? I thought they might break up when Nomi asked herself if she even believed in happy endings anymore, but I hope they don’t, even if just for the sake of defying the unhappy lesbian trope. I’m pretty sure they won’t- this show is way too positive to allow that trope to come true. Also I’m convinced Amanita is actually a goddess and thus immortal.
That being said, I would’ve looooved more footage of the Pride in São Paulo. There were such amazing clips going around on tumblr back when they filmed it, and there was some great material of them all dancing and kissing and having fun. Would’ve loved to see that in the show. The chemistry between the actors is one of the major reasons I love Sense8 so much.
I also really, really liked the idea of a global network of sensates. When I watch this show I just feel so connected to the world, and because I usually feel like an outsider that is really something special. I loved the scenes with other people’s clusters. It really is like the internet. Great parallels. Hope we’ll get to see more new clusters in s3!
Overall thoughts:
Capheus: Very relatable. Such strong morals and so much love and honesty. I’m very proud of my son.
Riley: Strong mama bear, keeps the cluster together. I like the parallels with Angelica. I hope she’ll get to be the one to save everyone in the end- maybe birth her own cluster..?
Will: Also very proud of this son. He does his best. But... the good cop personality is a little predictable sometimes.
Jonas: What... are you doing? I liked him so much in s1, the way he’d only talk in riddles but always seemed to care so much about his children, but now..? I might’ve preferred him staying dead even though I bawled like a baby during that scene to him turning to the bad side. But I’m sure there’ll be an explanation.
Whispers: great villain but not very relatable. I like it when villains are human, understandable. He just likes power and torture. Where are his motives?
Kala: Oh girl. Listen to your own advice and don’t waste that brain of yours. You deserve so much happiness. Also- doesn’t she have the most amazing body?
Lito: Speaking of amazing bodies... And I love how he is gaining confidence in his identity. My baby penguin. I just want him and his family to be happy.
Nomi: I love her speeches but... she really does seem to make everything about her. I don’t want to, but I get kind of annoyed by her sometimes. I can easily see why she loves Amanita, but why does Amanita love her? What has she ever done for her?
Wolfgang: Just... Why are you so good at getting yourself in trouble? Also, can we get a little more character development?
Sun: My daughter. I’m so proud of her. I just want to protect her- even though she’s the last one who needs protection. I love how, although she fits the ‘every Asian knows martial arts’-trope, she’s not a Dragon Lady. She has a heart like a baby bird and that, combined with her fierce determination and her emotional turmoil makes her a very interesting character. I was sad she had to leave Cool Grandma behind, and kinda disappointed she didn’t burst Soo-jin out of jail too (I must admit I was hoping for romance there). But I really, really hope she’ll have a happy ending with her teacher, her dog and detective Mun <3 and Joong-ki’s face in pulp.
Finally, the plot is confusing as ever, but who watches this show for the plot anyways?
