BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
[ID: A tweet by box office analyst Luiz Fernando that reads, "#Sony believed it was #MorbinTime with all #Morbius momentum online & rereleased the film in 1.000 theatres this FRI at the domestic #BoxOffice. But the studio has been trolled by fans it seems, as it grossed just 85k on 10th FRI, for a 73.4M cume in the US. Won’t even reach 74M."]

Update: “This one is hard to predict,” is the constant mantra this weekend among rival box office sources guesstimating the opening swing for Sam Wrench’s Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour concert movie. Friday is currently pegged in the $40M-$50M range with a big spread of $107M-$130M at 3,850 theaters. On the high-end, that could be the third biggest opening at the current 2023 domestic B.O. after Barbie ($162m) and Super Mario Bros 3-day of $146.3M. Added another source about Eras Tour outlook: “Prepare for us to be wrong.”
Why is a Swift concert film calculus to box office bean counters instead of weekly algebra when it comes to projections? Basically, there’s an enormous amount of frontloaded presales here, plus the x-factor is how many walk-ups occur. Add to that the standard drops on Saturday night with a young-female skewing title. One source has Eras Tour tracking ahead of Barbie‘s pure Friday gross (less $22.3M Thursday previews), which was $48.2M. That said, no one is expecting Swift here to play out like Barbie which fashion-walked to a $162M opening. We’ll have more updates as they come.
Meanwhile, haters aren’t going to hate: Critics on Rotten Tomatoes are giving Eras Tour a 100% score. AMC isn’t sending out official figures until tomorrow.
Early Screen Engine/Comscore PostTrak from last night, which was combed from $2.8M previews, gave Eras Tours five stars or 95% positive. Parents gave it 4 stars and kids under 12, 5 stars. Thursday night leaned 76% women with females under 25 at 42%, females over 25 at 34% and guys way behind at 15% over 25 and 9% under. Moms, natch, outnumbered Dads, 67% to 33% with an jawdropping 95% girls making up the majority of kids under 12. Best grades are women over 25 (100%) and under (97%) while men over 25 grit their teeth for 2 hours and 48 minutes giving Eras Tour its lowest grade of 78%. Note these exits will shift during the weekend.
Previous: The AMC distributed Taylor Swift: Eras Tour concert movie officially made $2.8M in Thursday night previews.
We told you last night that the rough estimate was below $5M. The pic played in 2,700 theatres with showings last night beginning at 6 p.m. local time.
Remember, these previews aren’t indicative of how the weekend will go. Projections of $100M+ stateside still stand at 3,855 theaters. Swift announced Wednesday night moments before her premiere that she was pivoting her lucky 13 release date plan of Friday 6PM to Thursday night previews for the Sam Wrench directed movie. In certain places, advance tickets for the concert film last night didn’t go on sale until six to eight hours before showtime.
There are technically no comps to last night, not only because of the last-minute addition of Thursday previews, but also there haven’t been many wide release concert movies in the preview millennium era of box office. Interestingly enough, the midnight showtime starts for Michael Jackson concert docu, This Is It, drew $2.2M on its Tuesday night, Oct. 27, before posting a $7.4M Wednesday and $34.4M five-day.
The last minute showtimes for Eras Tour didn’t take too much air out of the sleepy autumn box office with Universal/Blumhouse/Morgan Creek’s The Exorcist: Believer earning an estimated $1.3M yesterday at 3,663 theaters, -9% from Wednesday for a first week of $33.9M.
Lionsgate’s Saw X at 3,262 theaters did $729K yesterday, +1% from Wednesday, and $11.3M in week 2 and $35.7M running cume.
Paramount and Spin Master’s second week of Paw Patrol: The Might Movie earned $15.8M after a second Thursday of $620K, +2%, at 4,027 theaters. The animated pic’s running total is $42.8M.
New Regency/20th Century Studios/Disney’s The Creator at 3,680 theaters grossed $571K on Thursday, even with Wednesday, with a second week of $9.3M and a running total of $28M.
Fathom Events’ The Blind saw $271K at 1,312 theaters, and a second week of $4.5M and a running total of $11.9M.

'The two seemingly unstoppable phenoms of summer 2023 are each setting new milestones this weekend as Greta Gerwig’s Barbie through Friday has become the No.1 film of the year globally, overtaking The Super Mario Bros Movie with $1.365B. In the same breath, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer this frame is continuing its incredible run with the Universal title set to pass $850M globally through Sunday. This will see it surpass the filmmaker’s 2010 Inception as his 3rd highest-grossing title ever worldwide...
Oppenheimer is due to surpass Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 as the No. 3 movie of 2023 globally, coming in behind just Barbie and Super Mario. Of Nolan’s oeuvre, it is only now below The Dark Knight Rises and The Dark Knight.
The ascension of Oppenheimer gives Universal three of the Top 5 films this year globally to date.
Looking at estimates for the full weekend at the international box office, Oppenheimer is expected to earn $49M, lifting the offshore cume to $542M. The Cillian Murphy-starrer is the 4th biggest Hollywood film of 2023 overseas and Nolan’s best in 58 markets.
Through Friday, its offshore gross is $513.9M for $816.9M global. The Top 5 overseas hubs through yesterday are the UK ($69.7M), Germany ($44.6M), France ($38.7M), Australia ($24.8M) and Spain ($20.3M).
Notably, China opened to No. 1 on Wednesday this week and has held that position throughout the following days. The film has a terrific 9.5 score with audiences on Maoyan, and through Saturday is estimated at $23M (not included in the totals above). This is over double Inception at the same point (+144%, Wednesday opener), in line with the Wed-Sat gross of Interstellar (-5%), 20% above the Fri-Sat gross of Tenet, and 23% above the Fri-Sat gross of Dunkirk.
Maoyan over the past few days has upped its final projection for the film’s full run, today landing at roughly $64M. However, caution should prevail as these numbers tend to shift...'

Super Mario Bros. Movie Sets Box Office Records
WC:266
According to Variety Magazine, The Super Mario Bros. Movie surpassed the $500M mark for global box office sales. This marks the feature as not only the highest grossing film of 2023, but also earns the title of top grossing video game adaptation in history. The Super Mario Bros. Movie exceeds Warcraft ($439.4M) and Pokémon: Detective Pikachu ($449.8M), the previous highest grossing video game adaptations.
The animated film was produced by Universal Studios, Illumination and Nintendo with a budget of just $100M, making the movie highly economical for the respective studios. “That meant that Illumination’s founder Chris Meledandri co-produced the film with Shigeru Miyamoto, the legendary Nintendo designer who created Mario along with gaming classics like Zelda and Donkey Kong,” (Variety).
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the animated feature continues to set record highs in its second week at the box office both domestically and overseas. “It’s also the biggest second weekend ever for an animated film after surpassing Frozen 2 ($86 million)... Its foreign cume includes an impressive second-weekend gross of $94 million from 71 markets after dipping a scant 28 percent,” (The Hollywood Reporter).
The Super Mario Bros. Movie  was directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic and supported by a star studded voice cast including Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, Anya- Taylor Joy, and Jack Black. Illumination has produced other successful animation franchises such as Despicable Me, Minions, Secret Life of Pets and Sing. Illumination’s collaboration with the original creators of the characters (Nintendo) and a powerhouse distribution/ production company (Universal) set this film up to race to the top of the box office.

'The gang at Peaky Blinders is paying tribute to one of its own, toasting Cillian Murphy on the global success of Oppenheimer. Murphy, who played Tommy Shelby in the hit Steven Knight-created period drama from 2013-2022, plays the titular J Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan’s epic film which has received high praise and grossed over $400M global in less than two weeks.
On its social media channels today, the official Peaky Blinders account wrote: “Cillian, from the moment you donned Tommy’s cap it was clear that you are at the top of your craft. Your performance as Oppenheimer is magnificent.”
Peaky Blinders executive producer Caryn Mandabach today also told Deadline of Murphy, “He truly deserves all love from people who know him best.”
Murphy’s portrayal of Oppenheimer has drawn huzzahs from many corners. Deadline’s Pete Hammond in his review said the actor “captures all the contradictions of this brilliant, tortured, complicated man” and called the film “the most important motion picture of 2023, and maybe far beyond.”
Universal began overseas release on Oppenheimer on July 19 with the film defying expectations to launch at $180.4M worldwide. It has seen terrific holds, and through this past Sunday, topped $400M global. Through Tuesday, its international box office cume is $255.5M with worldwide reaching $443.9M.
Murphy completed his nearly 10-year arc as Peaky’s Tommy when the series wrapped with Season 6 last year, scoring his first BAFTA nomination for the show. Across its run, the saga developed a rabid global fanbase. Murphy was also an executive producer on the series.
Prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike, he told Deadline of Peaky, “The show is a kind of global phenomenon and we never expected it… I feel really proud of it and that’s the thing about television, it’s continually growing an audience and people are rewatching it. I mean, it’s kind of staggering how popular the thing is still… I still haven’t figured it out – it’s still kind of bizarre to me, but it’s wonderful. It means that we did something good.”'

The post-Thanksgiving weekend box office is typically weak, primarily made up of declining holdovers from the holiday frame. This weekend is no exception, but the decline is from a much smaller base than usual, with the $93.8 million Thanksgiving three-day and $134 million five-day weekend numbers being even worse than last year’s and the worst in decades by pre-pandemic standards. The year looks to end on a relatively high note, with just two weeks left until Avatar: The Way of Water is unleashed, but until then it will be a quiet fortnight at the box office.
Once again, this weekend will belong to Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. That the film will top the box office for the fourth time (and likely the fifth time next weekend) may say more about the lack of serious competition in the marketplace than about the film’s performance, but its box office numbers are undeniably strong. Following the MCU film’s $45.6 million Thanksgiving three-day and $63.8 million five-day weekend, it should stay above $20 million in this outing, which will push the cume ($372 million as of Tuesday) towards $400 million, if not beyond it, becoming just the third film this year to cross that line. By next weekend, Black Panther 2 will pass Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ $411 million cume to become the second best grosser of the year. Worldwide it is in seventh place with $681 million, and it should at least make it into the year’s top five, pulling ahead of The Batman’s $771 million, if not getting further.

‘Smile’ Bright: Paramount Horror Pic Passes $200M At Global Box Office
‘Smile’ Bright: Paramount Horror Pic Passes $200M At Global Box Office
Paramount’s Parker Finn-directed horror pic Smile has laughed all the way past the $200M mark worldwide. After six weeks in release – and with scary strong holds – the split through Sunday is $99.1M domestic and $103.8M from the international box office for a global cume of $202.9M. This original movie has positively beamed with only slight drops (and in some cases increases) throughout its run,…
