ventilation is a noninvasive technique used to provide ventilatory support to a spontaneously, but insufficiently, breathing patient using a facemask or nasal mask. With this mode of ventilation, BiPAP cycles between two levels of continuous positive airway pressure. BiPAP has been used successfully in adults with respiratory failure of diverse etiologies, such as pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and pulmonary edema

Waking up to Dangers of Sleep Apnea- A Sleep Specialist's View
Sleep Apnea is a serious sleep disorder in which a person repeatedly stops and starts breathing during their sleep. It happens involuntarily and when your breathing stops, oxygen levels in your bloodstream drop, prompting your brain to send a signal to wake you up long enough for you to breathe. This happens over and over again, making you lose sleep without you even remembering these episodes of waking. If you wake up tired after a full night sleep and snore loudly, you might have sleep apnea.
What are the types of sleep apnea?
• Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA): It happens when throat muscles relax and block the airflow to lungs.
• Central sleep apnea (CSA): When this happens, the brain isn’t sending adequate signals to the breathing-control muscles.
• Treatment-emergent central sleep apnea: This is also called complex sleep apnea and it happens when someone with OSA converts to CSA when receiving therapy for OSA.
How to tell if you have sleep apnea?
Symptoms of different kinds of sleep apnea may be very similar making it difficult to determine the one that you have. Some of the symptoms are –
• Snoring very loudly
• Another person may report that you stop breathing during your sleep
• Gasping for air while sleeping
• Having a dry mouth when you wake up
• Having a headache in the morning
• Insomnia or difficulty staying asleep
• Hypersomnia or excessive sleepiness during the day
• Difficulty in concentrating
• Being irritable
If you have a couple of these symptoms, you should see a doctor.
What causes sleep apnea?
Causes for OSA and CSA are different.
Obstructive sleep apnea is caused when the muscles at the back of the throat relax and block the airway. As the airway narrows or close, you can’t get enough air and the oxygen level in your blood falls. When the brain senses that you can’t breathe, it sends a signal to wake you up briefly, long enough for you to breathe. Most of the time you won’t remember having woken up because it happens for a very short time. During this period, you might gasp, choke or snort and someone sleeping next to you may be able to notice it. This waking up frequently keeps you from feeling rested and getting deep sleep.
Certain factors have been seen to contribute to causing OSA. These include being over weight which means fat deposits around the airway that cause obstruction in breathing; a thicker neck which might mean a narrower airway; a hereditary narrow throat; tonsils or adenoids; being male makes you 2 to 3 times more susceptible to sleep apnea; smoking; alcohol use,; use of sedatives or tranquilizer and nasal congestion or allergies. Being older also contributes to your chances of getting OSA, as does family history and certain medical conditions such as congestive heart failure, hypertension, Type II diabetes, PCOS, chronic lung disease etc.
In case of central sleep apnea, the brain does not send signals to your breathing muscles. When you feel shortness of breath, you wake up and may have difficulty falling or staying asleep again. Being older and male enhances your risk of central sleep apnea; as to heart disorders; having had a stroke and using narcotic pain medicines.
Why is it important to treat sleep apnea?
At Pulmo Vista, once we have diagnosed you with sleep apnea, we treat it like any serious disease. There are many complications that can arise due to it. Some of these are –
• Feeling tired during the day
• Getting up repeatedly during the night causing lack of sleep and constant irritability
• Lack of concentration that can have serious implications such as during driving
• Becoming forgetful
• Negative impact on performance such as deteriorating grades of children at school
• Becoming depressed or quick tempered
• Developing hypertension or other heart problems
• Increased risk of heart attack, stroke and irregular heartbeat
• Increased risk of developing Type II diabetes and insulin resistance
• Higher risk of developing metabolic syndrome
• Increased chance of complications arising during surgery or with medication
• Chance of developing non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and getting irregular liver function test results
Another side effect which does not directly affect the patient is having sleep-deprived partners who can feel so disturbed by the noise that they have to shift to another room.
How do doctors diagnose sleep apnea?
At a specialty clinic like Pulmo Vista, you get guidance from a pulmonologist and sleep specialist. You would be advised sleep studies that will help track your breathing patterns, blood oxygen levels and heart rate using a monitor while you sleep. This gives your doctor clues about your condition. An overnight study or a polysomnogram (PSG) might be advised that checks not just the breathing but also the brain, heart and lung activity. It also tracks the movement of your arms and legs. Asleep technician will monitor the test.On the basis of these results, adequate treatment is recommended.
How can sleep apnea be treated?
Treatment focuses on reducing the severity of the problem and managing it. Milder cases might get relief from lifestyle changes such as weight loss, allergy treatment or stopping smoking, while severe cases may require more intervention. Some of the ways of managing sleep apnea are –
Sleep apnea masks or machines involve wearing mask over your face during the night to deliver air into your airway regularly.
Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device blows air into your air way to keep your upper airway open through a mask covering your nose and mouth.
Bilevel positive airway pressure (BPAP or BiPAP) uses greater force than CPAP as you inhale.
Auto-positive airway pressure machine (auto-pap or APAP) adjusts the air pressure to respond to changes in your breathing while you sleep.
Adaptive servo-ventilation (ASV)is a computerised device that customises its air pressure levels to normalise your breathing.
Oral appliance such as sleep mouth guard or tongue retaining device help keep the throat open.
Supplemental oxygen proves helpful for certain central sleep apnea patients.
Treating secondary diseases such as heart or neurotransmitter disorders can also help you get relief from sleep apnea.
Medicines don’t necessarily offer relief but doctors may prescribe medicines that will help you sleep better.
Surgery maybe an option if other treatments don’t work. These include nerve stimulation, tissue shrinkage, tissue removal, jaw repositioning, tracheostomy and/or surgery to remove tonsils or adenoids.
With the right diagnostic tools and tests and adequate therapies, sleep apnea can be treated and the patient may live a wholesome life again.

especially bc narratively she had consequences to her gung ho approach (the scalpel ,sorta, and the BPAP thing). It was just insane misogyny. If she was Trey Santos the same people would be all over the character and shipping her with frank
oh my god the "no consequences" langdon loving crowd are so annoying and watching them try and claim they hate her for reasons that are not at all because she's a woman is just so ugh because you're right if every single thing about santos was the same only she was a man they would be all over how much they're alike and would be so forgiving of the cockiness and so excited for a potential mentorship and ship them like crazy

I've seen two main interpretations for Santos giving her credit to Mohan for the girl who took MDMA and was seizing when Langdon questioned them about who gave her treatment
basically it's like she's either manipulating Langdon to make him look like an ass so she's a bad person or she's unselfishly trying to save Mohan after she's been reprimanded multiple times by Robby so she's actually a good person
but it's not quite how I see it
the MDMA case comes about two hours after Santos threatened the man who had been poisoned with progesterone by his wife and she's already suspicious of Langdon concerning drugs and she was reprimanded by him about five hours earlier for nearly killing a man for putting him on bpap without checking it with anyone
Santos is not an asshole all the way down, she took the time to speak with the progesterone man's daughter even though it didn't work and threatened him to protect her when speaking to her failed, and she is trying to make connections with the other newbies like taking care of Whitaker's finger, she's just not good at it
but she definitely has an issue with male authority figures to no one's surprise after how she threatened that dad, and she brings up her suspicions about the drugs to Dana and Garcia first, two women and Garcia isn't even really in her chain of command so to speak, instead of going straight to Robby
so Santos knows she's going to get a reprimand for acting without supervision on the MDMA case because of what happened with the bpap and she is suspicious of Langdon, a man with authority over her as a senior resident, and who has already reprimanded her
I think she was testing him, she put herself in the worst light possible to see his reaction AND keep Mohan out of the line of fire as she did it, kind of keeping her as a witness
and Langdon hard core fails it, based on Santos's reaction I don't think she even expected him to be that harsh, this is all on him, he behaved badly as an authority figure and teacher, she did not make him do this and Robby rightfully reprimands him on it
(I do think you can make a comparison between Langdon's reaction and Abbot's later in the series when Santos does the reboa, yes it's during a mci so less supervision available but it's a higher stress situation for all involved and it's not like Abbott doesn't know she's green)
and it's not until after Langdon goes off on Santos that she goes to Robby with her concerns about the drugs
basically I'm taking a third option on this, something of a mix of the two because I don't think it's an accident we learn this information about Santos in this order or that she gets suspicious of Langdon's use of drugs before the MDMA scene
I do genuinely believe she thinks it's the right thing to do to report Langdon in general but especially for patients based on her protectiveness over the daughter and she is right about that, but part of her plot with the dad was having the security guard outside the door and claiming that he was ready to arrest him when they had no evidence to do anything, and saying Mohan made the save to make herself look worse on purpose to test Langdon is definitely well within the realm of possibility

The thing I like most about having a medical condition that's so rare that no one even knows its actual incidence rate is how I've suffered from extreme fatigue and poor sleep for 5 years because no one I saw for help knew enough about diaphragm paralysis to know it can effect sleep quality.
So instead, when I had my first sleep test, I was diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea. Diaphragm paralysis mimics the effects OSA on the body, but usually requires BPAP instead of CPAP to treat.
I've been through 3 sleep tests and 5 years of increasingly severe fatigue because I was the first person involved in my healthcare to Google "diaphragm paralysis and sleep."

Exploring Medical Accessories: Understanding Accessories to Medical Devices in India
In the rapidly evolving Indian medical device industry, regulatory compliance is essential not just for primary devices but also for their integral components—accessories. In this article, we’re exploring medical accessories to understand their critical role in enhancing device functionality, patient safety, and legal compliance in India.
According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s notification S.O. 648(E) dated February 11, 2020, accessories to medical devices are considered medical devices themselves. This means exploring medical accessories from a regulatory standpoint is as important as understanding the primary devices they support. These accessories fall under the same legislative framework—the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, and the Medical Device Rules, 2017.
What Are Medical Accessories?
When exploring medical accessories, it's important to define them precisely. An accessory is a product intended by its manufacturer to be used with a specific medical device to enable, enhance, or support its intended function. They are not merely supplementary items; rather, they are critical for the performance and safety of parent devices.
For instance, exploring medical accessories like ECG electrodes or CPAP masks reveals that these are specifically designed to work with a primary system and ensure its optimal use.
Common Examples of Medical Accessories
Exploring medical accessories in practical scenarios involves understanding the breadth of items that qualify. Common examples include:
CPAP/BPAP nasal or face masks
SpO2 sensors
Blood pressure cuffs
Bone screws and plates for orthopedic implants
Pacemaker leads
Electrosurgical unit electrodes and cables
Cochlear implant magnets
X-ray cassettes and compatible printers
Nerve stimulator probes
Temperature probes
Surgical device adapters
Casting tapes and splint rolls
Trocar and cannula
Extension tubes
Y-connectors and stop cocks for infusion systems
Each of these is vital for delivering effective medical care and must be evaluated thoroughly when exploring medical accessories for compliance and functionality.
Regulatory Process for Accessory Registration
One of the most important aspects of exploring medical accessories is understanding how to register them. As per Notification S.O. 648(E), accessories are regulated as medical devices. Hence, the registration process mirrors that of standalone devices under the Medical Device Rules, 2017.
To comply:
Manufacturers and importers must register each accessory independently.
Accurate technical documentation, intended use rationale, and conformity assessments must be submitted.
Importers must also furnish regulatory clearances from their country of origin, where applicable.
A step-by-step guide is available in our comprehensive post: “A Guide to CDSCO Medical Device (incl. IVDs) Registration.”
Why Regulatory Expertise Matters

Make Enquiry about Respiratory Care Devices Market
Key Market Drivers:
Rising Prevalence of Respiratory Diseases: The global burden of respiratory diseases, such as asthma, COPD, and sleep apnea, is increasing. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), COPD is the third leading cause of death worldwide, while asthma affects millions of people globally. Additionally, the rise in respiratory infections, such as pneumonia and influenza, further exacerbates the demand for respiratory care devices. With the increasing prevalence of these conditions, there is a growing need for respiratory care solutions that can effectively manage symptoms, improve lung function, and enhance quality of life.
Moreover, the ongoing rise in chronic diseases related to poor air quality, smoking, and urbanization is contributing to the higher demand for respiratory devices. These devices help in managing airflow, oxygen levels, and the overall health of patients suffering from these conditions.
Increase in Air Pollution and Environmental Factors: Air pollution is a significant factor contributing to the rising prevalence of respiratory diseases. In many urban areas, levels of particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide, and other pollutants continue to exceed safe limits, resulting in aggravated respiratory conditions, particularly in vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing lung conditions. Air pollution leads to increased hospital admissions and emergency room visits, thereby driving the demand for respiratory care devices, such as nebulizers and oxygen concentrators, to provide immediate relief and long-term management.
Growing Geriatric Population: The aging population is one of the primary drivers of the respiratory care devices market. Older adults are more likely to develop chronic respiratory conditions, such as COPD, lung fibrosis, and other pulmonary disorders. As life expectancy increases globally, the demand for respiratory care devices is rising, especially for home-based solutions that allow elderly individuals to manage their health in a comfortable and accessible environment. The shift towards home care and the preference for non-invasive solutions have further fueled the growth of devices like CPAP machines for sleep apnea treatment and portable oxygen concentrators.

Exploring the Efficacy of BiPAP Treatment for Severe Asthma-induced Respiratory Failure
Tumblr media
Introduction
Severe asthma, a common respiratory condition, is typically managed with inhalable bronchodilators and steroids. However, in certain instances, asthma can lead to respiratory failure necessitating more urgent therapeutic interventions. BiPAP (Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure) emerges as a mechanical ventilatory support device employed in the treatment of respiratory failure. This article aims to analyze the effectiveness of BiPAP treatment for respiratory failure induced by severe asthma.
BiPAP Treatment
BiPAP, employing a bilevel positive airway pressure technique, delivers continuous positive airway pressure, effectively enhancing pulmonary oxygen uptake. By diminishing inspiratory and expiratory effort, this technique aids in lung relaxation, promoting easier breathing. When respiratory failure is attributed to conditions like asthma, the use of BiPAP can alleviate the condition to a certain extent. By maintaining stable positive airway pressure, BiPAP contributes to minimizing the deterioration of asthma-related respiratory distress. As the patient's condition improves, the inspiratory pressure of BiPAP can be gradually reduced, transitioning the patient back to normal respiration.
Advantages of BiPAP Treatment
Compared to other therapeutic approaches, utilizing BiPAP for respiratory failure in asthma patients presents several advantages:
Bilevel positive airway pressure technology can increase pulmonary oxygen uptake without compromising respiratory effort.
Controlled positive airway pressure can mitigate airway inflammation induced by asthma to a certain extent.
Bilevel positive airway pressure technology, by sustaining adequate ventilation, assists patients in overcoming symptoms such as respiratory difficulties and fatigue.
The use of BiPAP in treating respiratory failure in asthma patients can promptly alleviate patient discomfort and expedite the recovery process.
Recommended BiPAP Devices
Prior to concluding our exploration of BiPAP treatment for severe asthma-induced respiratory failure, it's crucial to consider the selection of BiPAP machines. Several BiPAP devices are recommended for their reliability and effectiveness in managing respiratory distress associated with severe asthma. Notable recommendations include:
BMC G2S BPAP System (G2S B25VT / G2S B30VT):Known for its advanced algorithms, this BiPAP machine offers personalized therapy by adapting to the patient's breathing patterns, ensuring optimal support during respiratory distress.
ResMed AirCurve 10 VAuto BiPAP Machine: Renowned for its user-friendly features, this BiPAP machine provides adaptive support with customizable settings, enhancing patient comfort and compliance.
Fisher & Paykel SleepStyle Auto BiPAP Machine: This machine is praised for its quiet operation and comprehensive humidification system, contributing to a more comfortable and effective respiratory therapy experience.
In summary, selecting an appropriate BiPAP machine is a crucial aspect of ensuring successful treatment outcomes for severe asthma-induced respiratory failure. The aforementioned devices stand out for their innovative features and patient-centric design, making them valuable choices in the management of this challenging medical condition.
BiPAP Treatment Outcomes
According to previous studies, observations from "Utilizing BiPAP in Asthma is Safe and Effective" indicate that using BiPAP to treat respiratory failure in severe asthma patients is both safe and effective. Additionally, the cost of BiPAP treatment is lower compared to using a ventilator.
In practical applications, BiPAP treatment for respiratory failure induced by severe asthma is widely adopted. Results from a retrospective study show that BiPAP treatment enhances patient ventilation and reduces carbon dioxide levels. In another study comparing BiPAP treatment with conventional breathing techniques, it was concluded that BiPAP significantly alleviates symptoms such as ventilatory difficulties and restricted alveolar gas flow caused by asthma. Furthermore, for asthma patients treated with BiPAP, the risk of cardiovascular complications is correspondingly reduced due to the alleviation of left ventricular burden.
Conclusion
The advantages of using BiPAP in treating respiratory failure induced by severe asthma are evident. BiPAP, through bilevel positive airway pressure technology, aids in maintaining ventilation, relieving respiratory difficulties and fatigue, and increasing pulmonary oxygen uptake. Moreover, using BiPAP for respiratory failure induced by severe asthma is a safe and cost-effective treatment approach. While numerous studies have explored the effectiveness of BiPAP treatment, further research is needed to better understand the differences between BiPAP and other therapeutic methods, enabling the formulation of more specific treatment protocols.
