This special ring of light is actually a clock. Point in the middle of the ring and the shadows created by your finger shows the time.  It’s very simple and clean design. I am fascinated by these kind of creations. See the power of something “simple” in concept. Simple design is still allot a work to get it so pure and clear. Perhaps that is why it can be so powerful.  Created by breadedEscalope

Peak Plastic

Hyperallergic: Participatory Stool Making, Reclaimed Materials, and More at Collective Design Fair
Hairy seating by the Haas Brothers, on view with R & Company of New York at this year’s Collective Design Fair (all photos by the author for Hyperallergic)
Today the Collective Design Fair opens with almost 30 exhibitors at Skylight Clarkson Sq in Manhattan. There’s a thread of material reuse running through the fifth edition, seen in Stickbulb’s lighting installation made with an arch of 300-year-old redwood reclaimed from defunct New York City water towers and Brook Landscape’s “Green Corridor,” with a floor of timber from Rockaway boardwalks destroyed in Hurricane Sandy. Furniture, lighting fixtures, and functional design dominate, but there’s an increase in photography this year, particularly in the displays of New York galleries Yossi Milo and Yancey Richardson.
Overlooking the sleek booths of the main showroom is a dimly illuminated space where a curious white orb rests on the floor, surrounded by colorful concoctions in containers. If you time your visit right this week, you can witness the orb being pushed around by spectators and members of the Viennese design collective breadedEscalope, whose series of Original Stools are formed by filling a silicone mold within the sphere with resin and using motion to create a unique object.

Compared to some of the orb’s previous journeys since 2007, including to the Olympic bobsleigh track in St. Moritz, Switzerland, and the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Spain, a roll around the floor of Skylight Clarkson Sq is fairly mundane. “The project doesn’t really need that,” Michael Tatschl, a member of breadedEscalope, told Hyperallergic of the orb’s more extreme adventures. “We believe it’s much more an engaging project where people join in making things.” Martin Schnabl, a fellow member, added that “there’s always a different outcome that’s site specific.”
The Original Stools will be made from Wednesday to Saturday at the fair at 4:30pm, with a final event taking place on Sunday at 1:30pm. The first attempt, during the media preview on Tuesday, was rather tame, as journalists juggled their cameras and phones with Facebook livestreams while tentatively pushing the ball. “We should be more violent next time,” Schnabl commented upon seeing the yellow seat that emerged from the orb, only slightly misshapen. The resin was still warm to the touch, “like fresh bread,” he added.

More erratic breadedEscalope creations are on view with Frederieke Taylor Gallery of New York. While they’re certainly the most interactive pieces at this year’s Collective Design (although you might be tempted to collapse on one of the Haas Brothers’ hairy-creature-like couches at R & Company), there’s much for fairgoers to discover. The playful work of Swiss designer Matti Bonetti is featured in the mini Collective Influence exhibition. Flavor Paper and UM Project are presenting touch-activated conductive ink wallpaper that illuminates lights and activates fans. Hidden in an industrial corner of the space, the Noguchi Museum’s installation mixes work by its namesake with undulating sofas by Robert Stadler. Below are more photographs from the fair’s assembly of objects by both local and international designers and artists.

Collective Features & Pop-Ups
Newly announced programming includes FRACTURED by Dutch designer Stefan Hengst, an installation that will transform the fair’s entry with a series of varied, digitally printed works; an interactive performance from Viennese design collective breadedEscalope; New Artifacts by Storefront for Art and Architecture, three limited-edition works commissioned from Adam McEwen, LOT-EK, and Murray Moss+Lobmeyr; and a VIP Lounge designed by Huniford Design Studio. Keep reading...
FRACTURED by Stefan Hengst   Dutch designer Stefan Hengst works to challenge perceptions through design. At Collective Design Hengst will debut FRACTURED, a digitally printed installation transforming the entrance area to the fair. The multi-layered art piece has been created using a variety of fabrication techniques and will incorporate intricate stitching super-imposed atop a digitally fabricated work. FRACTURED explores the porous boundaries between art and design and conveys multiple points of view, sparking a dialogue between tradition and modernity. Reflecting and honoring the complicated world we inhabit, the installation is digitally produced by FaberExposize (The Netherlands). New Artifacts by Storefront for Art and Architecture Storefront launches New Artifacts, the first iteration of Storefront Editions, presenting three limited works from the worlds of art, architecture, and design. The works have been specially commissioned for Storefront's 2017 Spring Benefit: Artifact, which will take place at Federal Hall on May 23rd. They includeL-Ruler by Adam McEwen, LITE-SCAPES SF by LOT-EK, and Marilyn by Murray Moss in collaboration with Lobmeyr. Original Stool by BreadedEscalope BreadedEscalope is an experimental design collective from Vienna, Austria. At Collective, they will present a new iteration of their on-going project Original Stools, in which a colorful resin stool is produced through a unique process based on environmental interaction and serendipity. Each process begins with a hollow orb containing a flexible silicone mold. The orb is filled with resin and set in motion, rolling through a chosen location: city streets, down a slope, into water, and more, encompassing over 40 settings around the globe to date. The flexible form “records” all influences from the outside environment as the resin hardens during the orb’s journey. An Original Stool is always an unpredictable character that describes the unique story and place of its evolution.
VIP Lounge designed by Huniford Design Studio Huniford Design Studio was invited to design this year's VIP Lounge at the fair. Located on the ground floor, the VIP lounge, which will be designed by Huniford, will also showcase furniture from the firm's new Huniford Collection, a luxury furnishings line, and will mark the launch of the new collection this Spring 2017. The VIP Lounge will also incorporate artisanal works from Yarema and Beavauis Carpeting and art work by Jennifer Steinkamp, Harmony Hammond, Jack Tworkov and Hassan Sharif, in collaboration with Lehmann Maupin and Alexander Gray Associates.

breadedEscalope at Elga Wimmer PCC
The art collective breadedEscalope consists of three associates, all from Austria: Sascha Mikel, Martin Schnabl, and Michael Tatschl. Founded in 2007, the group maintains its art practice in Vienna. They function in the very interesting space existing between art and design. In their show “Daily Routines,” their first solo exhibition in America, breadedEscalope put out […]

This Clock Uses The Shadows Of Your Finger To Tell Time
This Clock Uses The Shadows Of Your Finger To Tell Time
What time is it? Your shadow can tell you! This is Shadowplay and it’s a simple ring of light on the wall that can tell time using shadows. It was created by the design studio breadedEscalope. You simply point your finger to the center of the light and the clock then focuses two points of light on your finger. When you take your finger back out, the full light ring returns. It casts two shadows…
