the scene in which kate introduces herself to lady d for the first time is definitely in my favorites of the entire show ajsndjasnd not only bc it’s funny but it tells so much in so little time

mary looking back to edwina when lady d inquiries after kate since edwina is the one who discovered her missing and edwina being like “girl don’t look at me im just the messenger” her little headshake lmaoooo it’s so funny to me?? also how bad is mary at lying sjdnaksnd if lady d wasn’t told kate had gone riding she’d still know something was amiss just from the look mary gives edwina

once kate comes in, edwina is the one who notices her hem - even tho she’s a little out of focus, watch her here. she is either very observant or used to her sister muddying up outfits and trying to help her hide. i think it’s the latter <3

kate immediately catches on to edwina’s minimal expression change and understands her meaning. i think they are very used to having nonverbal conversations like this. note how lady d’s eyes flicker down just for a moment here - i think she may have caught this exchange, but mary does not. just interesting to note as later on we know who catches on to kate’s feelings first.

edwina is soooooooooo happy to see her sister introduced to lady d, look at her 😭😭😭😭 she can barely contain her smile. sweetheart <3 but notice how when mary says kate’s name both edwina and mary give kate a little encouraging look and nod at the same time, almost as if telling kate “girl if u don’t bow right now...” seen as kate often says she doesn’t care what the ppl of london think about her and in the last episode literally fails to acknowledge the queen when she gives her and anthony a look, i’m guessing this is a thing that is well known to edwina and mary - that kate doesn’t exactly usually bow down, figuratively and literally, but she does here bc she wants to make a good impression and help her sister

the look on mary’s face when kate speaks abt newton 😭😭😭😭 like she knows exactly what is about to come. edwina’s fucking comically shocked expression. we’re always waxing poetic about simone’s eyes but charithra’s soooo expressive as well, her expression barely changes here but u see her confusion in her eyes. i love that. makes me smile just to look at her O_O lmao

edwina trying so hard (and failing) not to laugh. mary being like :) (derogatory). their reactions to kate are so different?? inch resting 2 me

anyway, sooo many acting choices that give us so much insight into the characters in just under a minute. a perfect introduction scene if there ever was one. i love it and i love them!!!!

This has been such a heartbreaking story. Shonda Rhimes has again created a magnificent story. I love it.

Mary favoring Edwina over Kate is a take I don’t get when there were more Mary and Kate scenes than Mary and Edwina scenes by a count of 2.5 to 0.

Mary isn’t a character enough to favor anyone. You could replace Mary with a potted plant in 98% of her scenes and nothing changes. Mary Sharma doesn’t exist for most of this season. In fact a real argument could be made that Queen Charlotte is more of a mother to Edwina and Lady Danbury is more of a mother to Kate than Mary is a mother to either.

But this fanon interpretation of Mary as some evil stepmother in my opinion just doesn’t track with the writing in the show. Largely because there is no writing for Mary in the show.

From the writing, to side lining it’s own leads, to the promotion. Like. Something fishy has happened here. I just legitimately do not understand what happened? Especially when you had SA and JB to work with. 😔
