I went back to the hawker centre with the stall selling salmon because I wanted to try the other juice blends the fruit stall has. After lunch of salmon, tofu, fu pi (tofu skin), hairy gourd and brinjal, I scanned the drinks menu. The juice blend I tried was dragon fruit and kiwi and it was SO refreshing. I'll return again to try their other fruit juices.

MH and I caught up over a delicious lunch at a restaurant she recommended. Apparently, the food was quite authentic since there were many Japanese customers. I tried the nabeyaki udon and it was delicious! After finishing our meal, we continued chatting at a Peranakan cafe with 1 of the most gorgeous table tops I've seen. It was so good to see her again.

It unexpectedly poured on Friday and I craved a steaming bowl of soup. Enter yu pian ban mian (sliced fish hand pulled noodles). With tender fish, an egg, 2 handmade pork balls, cabbage, tomato, bittergourd and sliced ginger, there was plenty of nutrition packed into a bowl! The hot clear broth was delicious and flavourful. Finally, watermelon juice to wash everything down.

Finally, L and I caught up after she asked about the restaurant which serves excellent unagi. We loved the thick slabs of ika (squid) sashimi, thanks to its tenderness and satisfying kou gan (texture). Chatting for hours over our meal and coffee afterwards, followed by browsing at the mall (L flirted up a storm with the sales staff), it was a fun outing. Besides geopolitics, we also discussed our respective governments and agreed that overall, they're doing a great job for our nations. We also talked about nutrition; it's a hot topic now that our countries are pushing towards healthy lifestyles and healthy ageing.

It's not that I disapprove of meat; due to Pa's strict medical dietary requirements, I give him moral support by accompanying him and eating more fish and tofu. I'm used to fish, seafood, eggs and tofu being my main protein sources, so much so that I sometimes forget to eat meat unless it comes with the dish I order, such as the yu pian ban mian. This isn't always good, as I miss out on vital nutrients. There will be meat in the next post.

The Best Food to Eat During Summer
Tumblr media
Summer is the perfect time to eat all of the in-season vegetables that are available. From tomatoes and cucumbers to lettuce, summer vegetables are more affordable and don't require long cooking times. You can eat many of these vegetables raw or lightly steamed. In addition, they're delicious when combined with fruit and vegetable juices. Here are a few suggestions for the best summer vegetables. Let's begin!
Fruits
The season's bounty of fresh fruits and vegetables is a great way to boost your diet's fiber and antioxidant content. Many fruits are low in calories and fat, and some are even fat free. Eating more fruit can help you maintain a healthy weight. Buying fruit during season can help you save money as well. So why not stock up on a few of these ripe, juicy treats?
While it is tempting to buy anything you can get your hands on, you should try seasonal produce whenever possible. Seasonal produce is better for you than store-bought fruits and vegetables, as they are allowed to ripen naturally and contain higher levels of antioxidants. Plus, you can buy them at their lowest price, which can help you stick to your summer budget. It's also better for the environment to buy local seasonal produce because it doesn't have to travel long distances or be picked hard. Fresh fruit is a sign of summer, and you should take advantage of it!
Vegetables
Vegetables are some of the best foods to eat during summer. The reason they're so good for us is because they're full of nutrition and taste great! Try out some of these recipes to expand your vegetable horizons. Brinjals, for instance, are a great option for a side dish. Brinjals are rich in fibre and pair well with nearly any spice you throw at them. They're also high in flavonoids, vitamins, and minerals. Brinjals are a popular vegetable throughout the world and India. Because they're high in fiber and water content, they are great for a snack or can be incorporated into a sweet dish like pumpkin kheer.
To keep your veggies fresh, store them at about 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Grilling or roasting is the easiest way to prepare them. Slice them thinly and then drizzle with olive oil and seasonings. Grill them on the grill or roast them on the stove at 350-450 degrees for three to eight minutes per side. Once cooked, store them in an airtight container and enjoy them within three to seven days.
Vegetable juices
Vegetable juices can be a healthy choice to drink in the hotter months, because they are packed with vitamins and nutrients, which keep us hydrated. Vegetables are also rich in antioxidants, which prevent the formation of free radicals that cause damage to the skin. Drinking them regularly will keep you feeling fresh and full for longer. They are an excellent way to fight dehydration.
The most common juices are made from fruit and contain very little or no vegetables at all. While fruit juice is good for your health, it contains very little fiber, which is beneficial to your digestion and blood sugar levels. Fresh vegetable juice is high in fibre and contains less sugar than fruit juice. It is also a good cleanser. Juice made from vegetables is also cholesterol-friendly and fibre-rich.
Watermelon
It's natural dehydration relief is just one of the many benefits of watermelon, which is 92 percent water. Watermelon is also packed with vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients, and its low calorie count makes it a healthy snack for most people. Among other things, watermelon contains vitamin A and C, which can improve immunity and reduce the risk of various cancers. It's also low in sodium, so it's a good snack for many people, and the water content helps curb cravings for sweets.
Antioxidants are an essential component of watermelon, and they can protect you from the damaging effects of the sun. Free radicals are produced naturally in our bodies during metabolism, and they can be increased through environmental factors like air pollution and smoking. Too many free radicals can damage cells, resulting in a variety of diseases, including cancer. Eating foods rich in antioxidants like watermelon can help protect the body from these harmful free radicals.
Celery
Although celery contains mostly water, the leaves and stalks contain a small amount of nutrients. Celery is rich in Vitamin K, an essential vitamin for bone building and proper blood clotting. It also contains gut-friendly fiber, an essential nutrient for healthy digestion. You can eat celery raw, in a salad, or as a salsa. Try serving celery with yogurt. It is about 85% water and contains vitamins A, B, and C, as well as a dietary fiber that helps with proper digestion.
Although celery may seem expensive and challenging to eat, its crunchy, tangy flavor is the perfect addition to summertime meals. Its crisp texture and flavor make it the perfect ingredient for salads. Celery leaves are available at most U.S. grocery stores in either heads or bagged hearts. Both varieties contain the inner stalks, which are tender and sweet. The outer ribs, which are fibrous, are best used in stocks and broths. The inner stalks, however, are softer and more tender and are a great addition to salads and garnishes. Always store celery in the crisper drawer, as it keeps best for a long time.
Dark greens
While it may be tempting to opt for lighter fare, dark leafy greens offer many health benefits. They are high in calcium, which helps to build strong bones and muscles and keep nerves working properly. In fact, many green comfort recipes deliver around 20% of the recommended daily allowance. They also provide plenty of vitamin C, which is linked to a reduced risk of developing head and neck cancer.
Dark leafy green vegetables are nutrient-dense and low in calories. They deliver important vitamins and minerals, fiber, and other healthy plant compounds. They also promote good vision, support the immune system, and may even help prevent certain cancers. They can even help regulate blood sugar levels. To get more benefits from these greens, choose fresh or frozen, cooked, or frozen, steamed, or sautéed.

THE AMAZING BENEFITS OF EGGPLANTS
Tumblr media
Eggplant Benefits For Cancer
Eggplant, or aubergine, is a species of the nightshade and grown for its fruit. They are related to the tomato and the potato and were originally domesticated from the wild nightshade species, the thorn species, or bitter apple species. Though many people think eggplants are a vegetable, they are technically a fruit because they contain small, edible seeds and are botanically classified as a berry. Culinary artists love using eggplant because it tastes different based on how it is prepared and because of its vibrant color. It’s a foodie favorite found in dishes around the world from eggplant parmesan to Thai curry to ratatouille. It also works well as a meat substitute satisfying vegan and vegetarian eaters. This purple delight is not just good for your taste buds, but it can be good for your health too!
MEDICAL BENEFITS OF EGGPLANT 1. HEART HEALTH Eggplants contain fiber, potassium, vitamin C and B6. These are all known to help lower the risk of mortality from heart disease. Studies have shown that eating these lead to lower rates of heart disease even in smaller quantities. A recent study showed that people who eat vegetables such as eggplant containing these nutrients have a 34% lower risk of contracting heart disease than those who do not. Eggplant also contains vitamin K which is necessary for blood clotting and helps prevent calcification of the arteries which prevents dangerous plaque deposits which may cause blockages.

2. LOWER BLOOD PRESSURE Eggplants contain a red-blue flavonoid plant pigment called anthocyanin which has been found to help with dropping blood pressure significantly. Lower blood pressure is known to lower the risk of stroke, heart attacks, and blood clots. Eggplant also contains vitamin E which is good for treating and preventing chest pain, blocked or hardened arteries and high blood pressure.
3. PREVENT SOME CANCERS Research has shown that eggplants contain polyphenols that are known for their anti-cancer properties. Eggplants have anthocyanins and chlorogenic acid which are antioxidants. They fight inflammation and oxidative stress-related damage found in the body. Studies have found that they can prevent tumor growth and help stop the invasion and spreading of cancer cells. Eggplant contains vitamin A, which may be beneficial in the treatment of cancers such as lung, breast, bladder, oral and skin cancer.
Check Also : Benefits Of Brinjal
4. HELP WITH ANEMIA Eggplants have been studied for their ability to help those who have iron deficiencies. Eggplant has many essential minerals including iron and copper. These minerals assist in improving the health of red blood cells within the bloodstream. Studies have shown that consuming eggplant if you are anemic can help boost energy, strength and eradicate feelings of exhaustion and worry.
Check Also : Benefits Of Eggplant
5. DIABETES Eggplants contain a lot of fiber and are low in soluble carbohydrates. One recent study found that a more eggplant-based diet can help manage or prevent type 2 diabetes. More research is needed to back up these figures. Eggplants contain high amounts of alpha-glucosidase and angiotensin compounds that can control glucose absorption. Plus, eggplants have phenols that help insulin break down carbohydrates slowly, which aids in controlling blood sugar levels.

Winter vegetables and why you should eat these in winter
Winters bring joy and color to our plate. The winter vegetables are as invigorating to taste buds as they are eye-candies. In summer, we mostly eat vegetables like brinjal, pumpkin, and parwal. However, winter unleashes a gamut of them. In addition to crucifier vegetables like cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts, we also relish vegetables like broad beans, carrots, radishes, peas, French beans, and capsicums. Not only they bring variety to your culinary experience, but they are also extremely helpful for your health. This article shall help you figure out which winter vegetables you should eat and why.
Tumblr media
1)     Cabbage: Cabbage is one of the crucifier vegetables that we associate with the winter season. The aroma of a well-prepared cabbage curry is inextricably related to the Indian dining experience. They are pretty healthy as well. Cabbages have vitamin C, vitamin K, potassium and other important minerals. I should emphasize that vitamin K in vegetables aren’t abundantly available, and hence cabbages are recommended as a source of vitamin K. Vitamin K helps in blood clotting. Lots of people complain about indigestion caused by cabbage; however, the notion must be corrected. Cabbages contain both soluble and insoluble fibre that is good for gut bacteria and digestive health. Nevertheless, for persistent digestive issues chat with professional doctors.
2)     Carrot: Carrots are famous throughout the world. A succulent continental meal without boiled carrots is thoroughly incomplete. Carrots contain vitamin A, vitamin C, potassium and other nutrients that are good for health. However, carrots are primarily known as a source of vitamin A. Vitamin A is essential for eyes and skin and hence eating carrots would take care of your eyes and skins and even your hair and will help you in the long run.
3)     Broad beans: Broad beans are winter-based vegetables that contain iron, zinc, and folate. Folate is important for the brain development of your child. Zinc also fosters growth and development. In addition, the iron content helps to improve your blood health. Evidently, broad beans are a healthy nutritional source for pregnant mothers. Pregnancy also needs extra special care. For special needs, you should opt for a free online chat with a doctor.
4)     Radish: Several people are prejudiced with this particular vegetable, however, they are an excellent source of Vitamin E, A and C. These vitamins are antioxidants and therefore help to enhance your immunity. Radishes help you fight diabetes and are good for your heart.
5)     Peas: Peas are an excellent source of protein and are primarily available in winter. Peas contain antioxidant know as flavonoids and catechin, which help reduce free radical damage. Reduction of free radical damage, in the long run, helps prevent many diseases. They also contain vitamin K which is good for Alzheimer and arthritis. So include peas in your daily meal. A good sabji made of peas can be extraordinarily satisfying to your taste buds also. There is no denying of the fact that Alzheimer is a serious disease. For any symptoms, you should share your problem with doctors
6)     Capsicum: Any fans of Chinese cuisine out there would know when I say- every food becomes yummier when capsicum is added to it. Not just in terms of taste; health-wise capsicum is beneficial as well. Capsicum contains flavonoids, an antioxidant that is especially helpful for menopausal women. It also contains folate and vitamin E that helps recuperate women’s health. So make some sautéed capsicum and eat in winter.
7)     Broccoli: Broccoli is considered a super food, especially because it contains a high amount of antioxidant. Additionally, Vitamin k and vitamin c found in broccoli are helpful for our health. This vegetable is primarily available in the winter season and is helpful for reducing free radical damage.
8)     French beans: This winter vegetable is used for making soups, fried rice, and plain curry. Many of us are not aware of the health benefits of these vegetables. These vegetables contain lots of potassium, folic acid, iron, and zinc. This is good for patients suffering from diabetics. For diabetes-related problems talk with doctors online.
9)     Coriander leaves: These leaves are mandatorily a part of curry and soup preparation in this part of the globe during winters. Sometimes these can be used for making chutney. This all-purpose leafy vegetable has some excellent health benefits too. It is good for skin health and helps reduce inflammation of the skin. It helps in preventing conjunctivitis which is very common in the winter season. It is also good for reducing blood cholesterol and for patients suffering from diabetes.
10) Cauliflower: Cauliflower is cooked in a hundred different ways and it won’t be an exaggeration to say that each of them is tastier than the other. Cauliflower has several health benefits too. Sometimes people are also afraid in consuming cauliflower because they think it may cause gas and indigestion. But any vegetable that contains a high volume of fibre may cause indigestion. Cauliflower contains Vitamin K, Potassium and magnesium. All these nutrients are good for overall health so don’t be afraid and eat cauliflowers after proper cooking.
Boost your health this winter with these wonder veggies, all the while drowning in their exquisite taste.

Previously, I said I wouldn't revisit Pizza Hut for their promotional Hut Melts unless a friend wanted to dine there; well, MZ wanted to try them after I told him they were good. He, WW, DT, MS, SW and I ordered a feast and ate to our hearts' content. By the end of the meal, SW and I agreed that, we may return if their promotional items look good, but not for regular pizza (because... bored). This boredom applies to other fastfood chains' regular menus.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
youtube
Back to moderately healthy meals when dining out. I visited a local cai fan (mixed dishes rice) stall and they served salmon, so I ordered it, braised fu pi (tofu skin) and 2 types of squash - hairy gourd and luffa - to go with congee. At another stall, I chose gong bao ji ding (kungpo chicken), onion omelette, egg tofu, stirfried green beans as well as stirfried cabbage and brinjal with shredded carrots. The weather has been hideously warm lately, so, I drank freshly squeezed watermelon juice and iced barley instead of iced local coffee. Both beverages are incredibly refreshing in this sweltering heat.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
SW and I finally met in a comfortable setting; we wore comfy clothes and caught up over Lan Zhou mian (Lan Zhou noodles). SW chose beef soup mian, I had dry chicken mian. We shared sides - braised eggs, tofu skin mock chicken, fu pi with capsicum and oyster mushrooms. She said I'm the happiest and most relaxed she's seen in a long while. We chatted about Coco's recent passing, current affairs, Asian celebrities, health and fitness as well as life in general.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We also chatted about body positivity and the articles complaining about the Y2K trend which have appeared since its resurgence. SW, at her height, is an Asian equivalent of a US plus size woman. Her view was, 'Just wear the clothes already and stop whining.' And I agree with her. Body positivity has paved the way for heavier women to proudly don bikinis; low slung jeans actually cover more of the body, so why the fear of them?
There's also the option to skip the trend or parts of it. I wore low slung jeans and baby tees when Y2K fashion was trendy the first time; I'll pass. This heat is a killer and, outside of work, I live in shorts and tops in light cotton or fabrics that let my skin breathe. I don't follow trends that don't suit me anyway.

What is 3-Day Gut Reset and does it help microbiome?
Tumblr media
The gut plays a very important role in our overall health. It helps in controlling our weight, mood, and mental health. Along with this, it is also beneficial for the immune system. Gut health is a reflection of the overall health of our digestive system. Therefore, it is very important to keep our gut healthy. Our diet also has a special role in healthy living. Many people believe that following a specific diet for some time has brought about a tremendous change in their gut health. An model of this is the 3-Day Gut Reset. In this article we will talk about Gut Reset and tell you what is 3-Day Gut Reset Diet.
Signs of an Unhealthy Gut
Many aspects of modern life such as excessive stress, too little sleep, processed and high sugar foods, and taking antibiotics can damage our gut microbiome. Not only this, they damage many of our organs such as the brain, heart, immune system, skin, weight, hormone levels, ability to absorb nutrients and can even lead to the development of cancer. Some of the symptoms of an unhealthy gut are: Upset Stomach Some of the symptoms of an upset stomach such as gas, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, and heartburn can be signs of an unhealthy gut. A balanced gut has fewer problems processing food and removing waste from the body. Skin Irritation Skin conditions such as eczema are also believed to be related to problems in the gut. Inflammation in the gut occurs due to poor diet or food allergies, which can lead to leakage of certain proteins in the body. Which causes skin problems and diseases like eczema. High-Sugar Diet If we consume high sugar or processed food, then the amount of good bacteria in our gut decreases. This imbalance can increase the urge to consume more sugar, causing damage to the gut. Unintentional Weight Changes Losing or gaining weight without changes in diet or exercise habits can also be a sign of an unhealthy gut. An imbalanced gut can impair your body's ability to absorb nutrients, regulate blood sugar, and store fat. Constant Fatigue According to the National Institutes of Health, an unhealthy gut can cause sleep problems such as insomnia or poor sleep and can also lead to more exhaustion. Most of the body produces serotonin, which is a hormone that affects mood and sleep. This hormone is produced in the gut. Therefore, gut damage can cause disturbances in our sleep. Food Intolerance Food intolerance can result from not being able to digest certain foods. Food intolerance is believed to be caused by the poor quality of bacteria in the gut. This makes it difficult to digest foods and can cause symptoms such as bloating, gas, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and nausea.
What is a 3-Day Gut Reset?
The goal of the 3-Day Gut Reset is to increase the number of beneficial bacteria in a person's digestive system. If we change our diet and follow some other steps, then we can get many health benefits. The 3-Day Gut Reset is a small-term diet that aims to improve digestive health by increasing the number of beneficial bacteria in a person's large intestine. The bacteria and other microorganisms present in the large intestine help break down food. However, according to research, gut bacteria also affect many aspects of health such as immunity and inflammation. This effect of gut reset can be positive or negative. It depends on what type of microbes are in a person's gut. The purpose of a gut reset is to restore the balance of the microbiome. It does this job like this: - It removes such food, which increases the harmful bacteria that cause inflammation. - Introduces beneficial and prebiotic food, which aids in the growth of beneficial bacteria. - Encourages healthy practices, such as getting enough sleep and exercising, and staying hydrated.
Does gut reset work?
Typically, the goal of a 3-Day Gut Reset is to follow habits that are beneficial to human health. People feel good by following a healthy and balanced diet and not consuming such harmful food. However, scientists haven't investigated whether a 3-day gut reset can permanently alter a person's microbiome or lead to lasting health improvements. According to research, short-term dietary changes change the health of a person's gut. According to researchers, bacteria react very quickly to changes in a plant-based diet. This suggests that the 3-day gut reset during diet may positively affect the microbiome. However, long-term dietary and lifestyle changes are necessary for lasting benefits.
The diet plan of 3-Day Gut Reset:
To follow the 3-Day Gut Reset diet plan, first of all, know what you should eat in these three days and what other things should be taken care of along with it:
Day One
On the first day of the 3-Day Gut Reset diet, you should include anti-inflammatory food in your diet and take care of some other things, such as: Anti-Inflammatory Food On the first day of a gut reset, focus on eliminating inflammatory foods or drinks from your diet. These inflammatory foods contain it all: - fructose such as corn syrup or table sugar - Refined carbohydrates like cakes, pasta, etc. - Foods rich in saturated fat, like processed meats Instead, we should consume fresh foods and healthy foods, such as: - green leafy vegetables such as spinach - Vegetables like capsicum, carrot or brinjal etc. - Fruits that are low in sugar like apples, avocados etc. - olive or olive oil - Nuts and Seeds - Oily Fish and Lean Protein - Complex carbohydrates provide energy throughout the day, so you should also consume brown rice, oats etc. Stay Hydrated Drinking enough water is also necessary for the body to function. So don't let your body lack water. Consumption of alcohol and caffeine etc. should be avoided during gut rest and herbal tea should be taken instead. Get Adequate Sleep Some research proves that getting enough sleep affects the microbiome and cognitive function. In such a situation, getting proper and adequate sleep is very important.
Day Two
In 3 Day Gut Reset Diet (3-Day Gut Reset), you should take care of certain things so that their effect is more, such as: - Add More High Fiber Foods - Consuming a high-fiber diet in your diet would benefit your gut. Examples of this are as follows: - raw vegetables and salads - Green vegetable and fruit juices and smoothies - flax seeds - Beans If you increase the amount of fiber in your diet completely, then you may have problems with bloating or gas. In this case, increase its sufficient amount in your diet. Try Regular Exercise It has been found that exercising can have beneficial effects on the diversity of the microbiome. By doing regular exercise, you can avoid stress and it also helps you to maintain your weight right. For this you can try all of these: - Walking - Yoga - Pilates
Day Three
Even on the third day of Gut Reset, you have to make some changes in your life and diet, which are as follows: Try Fermented Foods Fermented food contains probiotics which are live bacteria. You should include such foods in your diet as curd. But there are some side effects of probiotics with high fiber food like bloating or gas. However, these problems get better in a few days, but if it is not, then you should reduce the amount of fermented food in your diet. Try Relaxation Techniques Stress can affect our gut in many ways. This affects the speed of our digestion, increases the sensitivity of the intestine, and also affects the health of the gut. Therefore, it is necessary to incorporate some relaxation techniques in your daily life like meditation, yoga, massage, etc. When you adopt this diet and methods in these three days, you will feel some changes in yourself. You can then follow some or all of these methods for long-term benefits.
Who should not try Gut Reset?
Short-term gut reset is not recommended for people who have certain health issues. Along with this, do not plan if you are taking any medicines, are pregnant, or breastfeeding. Gut reset includes dietary restrictions, so these diets and methods do not help recover for a person suffering from this eating disorder. Any changes to your diet should be discussed with a doctor or dietician. If you have any problems, seek medical help immediately. 3-Day Gut Reset can prove to be beneficial for many people. However, there is not yet complete evidence to support the way that this diet in three days can change the microbiome or a person's overall health. However, long-term dietary changes can have a positive effect on a person's gut health and certain chronic health conditions. Before following this diet, consult a doctor or dietician. Even if you face any problem during or after this diet, it is imperative to seek medical help immediately. Read the full article

Types of Brinjal (Eggplant) in Hindi
Benefits of Brinjal in Hindi

Shutterstock

Shutterstock

Shutterstock

11 Super Healthy Foods Bengali Cuisine Is Known For
Bengali cuisine is unique in the ingredients it has. The dishes retain much of the fibre and lot of proteins are eaten in every meal cooked with healing spices.
One of the most celebrated cuisines in the world is Bengali cuisine. Everything about Bengali cuisine is unique from the rest of the cuisines across the globe. Those lip smacking delicacies complete with mustard seeds and paste, special 5 spice mix panch phoran, river fish curries and milk-based desserts are what make the Bengali spread drool worthy. It is considered to be the perfect blend of various vegetarian and non vegetarian preparations, that catches the eye and the palate. When eaten right, and in courses as described in the age old recipe books, the well-balanced dishes actually help you maintain healthy weight.
Moving on from taste and look of Bengali delicacies, let us now consider the health benefits of some of the most famous and common dishes and spices used in Bengali cuisines.
1. Parboiled rice
When it comes to rice, Bengali cuisine uses parboiled rice. Bengalis prefer to eat parboiled rice to ensure they get a good dose of B vitamins. In parboiling, unmilled rice (still in its rough outer husk) is boiled or steam-heated for a short time. This drives the B vitamins (thiamin, riboflavin, and niacin) from the outer bran into the center of the grain. Thus, parboiled white rice has more B vitamins than plain white rice, which loses those vitamins when its bran is removed.
2. Fish
Bengali cuisine and its love affair with fish curries and fish fries is not news. Preparing and eating fish delicacies is part of Bengal’s food tradition and culture. Fish is a high protein food that is low in calories, total fat, and saturated fat. In addition, a large proportion of the fat in seafood is polyunsaturated. The protein in fish is also easy to digest. The omega-3 fatty acids found in fish and shellfish, can reduce the risk of heart disease and ensures proper development of brain and eye tissues. Bengalis also cook fish heads and Maacher tel (fish liver oil) which are very rich in vitamins A & D and minerals like iodine. Eating whole small fish also provides you with calcium and phosphorus. Want to gain nirvana? Try Tangra Macher Jhol and Ilish Macher Jhol, they are out of this world!

Lentils (Dal) are a must in Bengali Cuisine. Bengalis use various types of lentils, beans, and grams – these are  low calorie, low fat and protein rich food as well as being inexpensive. Lentils provide more folic acid than any other food. Lentils are also an important source of iron. Eating lentils with foods rich in Vitamin C, such as tomatoes, green peppers, broccoli etc. helps the body absorb iron more efficiently. Soluble fiber found in lentils decreases blood glucose and cholesterol and decreases insulin requirements for people with diabetes. On this note, try the Bengali Cholar Dal!
4. Bitter gourd (Korola)
As a nutrient source, bitter melons are rich in iron. It is effective in treating diabetes and is one of the best herbal medicines for liver problems. A must ingredient in most Bengali dishes, postho or poppy seeds are a powerhouse of calcium. One tablespoon of posto contains 127 mg of calcium. Try Aloo Potol Posto. Poppy seeds are also natural coolants and help relieve stress.

Garlic is used in nearly all the Bengali dishes. Garlic is an effective antibiotic, antiviral and antifungal agent, and probably an immune system enhancer. Some studies have found lower rates of certain types of cancer in people who consume large amounts of garlic. Other studies show garlic can reduce LDL or “bad” cholesterol.
8. Onion
Onions are rich in vitamin C and fiber and contain chemicals that help fight the disease causing free radicals. When you eat half a raw onion a day, your good type HDL cholesterol goes up an average of 30 percent. Onions increase circulation, lower blood pressure, and prevent blood clotting. Onion is necessary in cooking almost all types of curries, dals, meat and fish in Bengali cuisine.
