Time marches on
Tumblr media
Good morning from a dark and blustery Devon. By the looks of it, or at least from what I can hear from outside, it's going to be another day of full-on rain. And it's another early start; I could have got up even earlier -- 3.06 am to be precise -- thanks to my friendly milkman who decided to screech to a halt outside my house and deliver next door's milk. What the hell was he thinking? I did manage to get back to sleep but, as is so often the case, it was a broken pattern of short dreams and at just after 5 am the alarm went off and I felt the need (again) to get up and walk downstairs to start the day's business. The first thing I noticed as I came down the stairs was the balance of the Secret Santa presents torn open and, in the case of one of them (a hair grip), eaten to bits. Thanks, Eddie; I'll be covering for you again. Puppy life, eh! Still, the coffee is made and I'm listening to the haunting music of Rodrigo Rodriguez.
This is life, right? All here in this moment -- whatever is happening.
The above picture is taken of Broadsands Beach which I visited yesterday in the hope of photographing some of the old concrete buildings. Silly ol' me: I'd forgotten that the only one of significance was remodelled at least a decade ago, and now resembles more a beach hut than a piece of brutalist architecture. Still, it was nice to look out to sea and feel the cool mist on my face without a puppy fighting me on the lead. I also got to visit Oldway Mansion in Paignton which, as a boy, was a favourite place of mine. As the below picture shows, it's sadly fallen into a state of disrepair and filled me with a deep sense of melancholy thinking of the money, effort and time that was originally invested in building the house, only to be mistreated and left to rot by the Council.
Tumblr media
I know that this latest project of mine -- trying to capture what little brutalist or concrete architecture still remains -- isn't going to take very long because so much of what I now remember is either wrongly remembered, isn't there or has been changed to the point where it no longer resembles anything approaching the angular, taught buildings of my childhood. In fact, the only building that's still on my list which you can properly categorise as pre-brutalist is the Central Church in Torquay. I hope when I do finally get to photograph it that I can do justice to its brilliance and history.
You might ask, why I'm interested in photographing these local buildings which include some pretty nasty looking concrete car parks? It's a good question and I think my answer has something to do with, in a strange, almost mythical sort of way, an era that whilst I can't say was enjoyable or even happy, nevertheless, is something that I can speak to and reminds me of the passing of my 54 years and counting. I could have chosen other local landmarks but the truth is, apart from Dartmoor and the coast (both stunning in their own right), I don't have much else to speak about. You see, as a kid, I used to walk everywhere -- we only had one car -- and the buildings that I'm sharing with you are ones where I could easily get to on foot and I'd spend hours (at least in the case of Oldway Mansion) exploring.
I'm not sure what I'll do once I've completed my photographic rounds. I might go further afield -- Plymouth, Exeter or Truro -- or I might decide to photograph and document other places of interest. Or I might do nothing. Only time will tell.
As to the rest of the day, given it's still raining, I doubt I'll venture far. I've started reading Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace and I may just take up station in the lounge and read for a few hours.
One last thing. I don't know why it is but 2022 is already beginning to feel of greater import than previous years. I think that's because: a) I turn 55 this year; and b) I've plans to travel across the British Isles to both rediscover some of the places I've not visited for a very long time but also to seek out places that I've wanted to visit all my life but not been able to do so. The age thing is also meaningful because I can still remember those people who were able to and did retire aged 55. And when I say 'retire' I mean they never worked again. They had final salary pension schemes that were bombproof. I think to myself, wistfully of course, what would I do if I was now in their position? It's also something to reflect on and consider how, societally, we've allowed a situation to arise where we'll all be working now until we drop down dead or certainly well into our late 60s or early 70s.
Anyhow, I think that's enough for now.
Have a wonderful day.
Blessings,
Julian

Out for a walk along the sea front at Broadsands

The sea was boringly calm, walked under the railway arches and up some steep steps towards Goodrington, got to the top then turned back, knees not up to going any further.

Beautiful Broadsands beach in Paignton, south Devon, is about 20 minutes by car from Torquay. But the better way to get between the two is by foot along the Southwest Coast Path, with sea views for almost the full two-hour walk. . The water here is pretty calm most of the time, too, because it's in a protected bay, so bring your swimsuit and a towel. . . . #devon #devonbeach #southdevon #broadsands #devonlove #devonlife #englishbeach #ukbeach #britishbeach #britishbeaches #devoncoast #southwestcoast #southwestcoastpath #englishcoast #englishcoastline #ukcoast #britishcoast #britishcoastline #devonscenery #devondays #devonholiday #devonisheaven #instadevon #beachstagram #beachpic #nofilteradded (at Broadsands)
