The New Model Army Defiant: ‘What were the lords of England but William the Conqueror’s colonels or the barons but his majors?’
Cromwell and Fairfax Choose Sides
Tumblr media
The Farmer Who Ruled England by Ron Embleton. Source: Look And Learn magazine #51 (5th January 1963).
BY THE SPRING of 1647, the split between the Presbyterian faction that dominated Parliament and the New Model Army had widened into a chasm. The Army was fundamentally opposed to Parliament’s intention to disband most of its units, save for an expeditionary force to be sent to Ireland, with its months of wage arrears unpaid and with no indemnity granted to soldiers for actions taken during the war. The Army was also suspicious at what it perceived as the marginalisation by the Presbyterians of its popular leading commanders, Sir Thomas Fairfax and Oliver Cromwell, and nervous at the apparent negotiations between Parliament and the King which they believed could see Charles re-established with full royal authority on his throne, with potentially dire consequences for those commoners who had raised arms against him. The Independents were therefore assuming more and more influence amongst the middle ranking officers and the ordinary soldiery, leading to an increased militancy, not just against a Parliamentary faction that the men believed sought to swindle them out of their due, but also against an aristocratic ruling order they saw being reimposed and which many had hoped the war had rid them of. This led to the soldiers to begin to elect so-called “Agitators” to represent their interests to Parliament. The Agitators were more akin to shop stewards than the term’s modern connotation of persuasive political radicals, and indeed one of the first actions of the new militancy was for the Army to go on strike in April 1647.
The strike manifested itself as a refusal to serve in Ireland without the soldiers’ back pay being met, legal indemnities for their actions during the fighting being issued and, significantly an insistence that the Irish expedition be led by Cromwell and Fairfax. The two commanders were in an invidious position: Fairfax remained Parliament’s commander-in-chief and Cromwell was a sitting MP. Both men privately sympathised with the strikers. Cromwell attempted to broker an agreement between Parliament and the Agitators, but the situation spiralled out of control when on 25th May, Parliament announced the disbanding of the New Model Army with the exception of the force to travel to Ireland. The Army’s response was to muster in Newmarket, a show of strength that took the Presbyterians aback who, apart from the Trained Bands in London, had no military forces of their own to deploy against what was beginning to look like an organised mutiny. The Agitators then issued their own demand that the eleven MPs who had signed the disbandment order should themselves be removed from the Commons.
This development led to Cromwell’s moment of truth. Instinctively, he was a social conservative, very wary of the radical elements of the Army, but equally he owed a debt of blood to the soldiery whom he had commanded, fought with and led to extraordinary victories. His ultimate decision was made easier by his enemies in Parliament who believed him to be, at best, tolerant of the radical Independents in the Army and at worst, their cynical manipulator. As the Presbyterians’ negotiations with Charles threatened to being Scottish troops back into England to take on the New Model Army, Cromwell resigned his Parliamentary seat and cast his lot in with the military. What followed was the most audacious move in an extraordinary career that would one day make Cromwell king of England in all but name. Following a shadowy and never proven meeting between Cromwell and his immediate officers over lunch at an inn in Drury Lane, on 2nd June, a relatively junior Agitator named George Joyce, a second lieutenant, or “Cornet” in the New Model Army cavalry, led a troop of 500 horse to Holdenby House.
Joyce was met with suspicion by the military force guarding the King at Holdenby and they refused his demands to release Charles into his custody. The enterprising Joyce then forced his way into the startled King’s bed chamber and insisted Charles accompany him to London. The King, sensing something was afoot, and having obtained assurances from Joyce he would not be harmed or compelled to do anything against his conscience, agreed. The Parliamentary guard, unwilling to take on a numerous force of New Model troopers stood down and Joyce took charge of the King. An intrigued, and quite possibly amused, Charles enquired by what authority Joyce was taking him into custody. Joyce, clearly discomfited by Charles’ persistence, obfuscated, and replied transferring the King to the care of the Army, was necessary to secure peace in the Kingdoms. When Charles continued, asking Joyce “by what commission you have” to take his action, the exasperated officer turned and indicated his mounted soldiers. “By this commission, sir,” he replied. The King acknowledged the new reality under which his realm was now ruled. “It is as fair a commission and as well written as I have seen a commission written in my life.” he allegedly remarked. On 7th June, Joyce handed Charles into the charge of Fairfax and Cromwell. The rebellious New Model Army not only now had the unequivocal support of its much loved wartime commanders, it had the King as well.
Cromwell, Fairfax and the King all now proceeded to Newmarket where the Army remained under arms. Cromwell encouraged the formation of an Army Council to, in effect, administer the rebellious force, independent of any form of Parliamentary control. Parliament quickly realised the seriousness of the situation it was faced with: failure to compromise could lead to its overthrow by the Army. They quickly conceded the Army Council’s demands : the disbandment order was rescinded, the hated eleven signatories resigned their seats and pay arrears were agreed to be met in full. Cromwell now found himself in the position of being able to seek a settlement to bring the civil war to a conclusion but mandated by neither King nor Parliament to do so. There followed a period of intense negotiation with Charles under which Cromwell and Henry Ireton were prepared to reject the Newcastle Propositions and the Solemn League and Covenant, restore Royal privilege and crush the radicals in the army in return for religious toleration, biennial Parliaments and an amnesty for the those who had fought for Parliament. The only significant concession the Independents asked of Charles was his agreement to end episcopacy. An unlikely partial Royalist victory was within Charles’ grasp if he could bring himself to agree to the generous terms, known as the Heads of Proposals, on offer.
At the same time as, crab like, a settlement of England’s constitutional crisis seemed at last possible, political opinion was hardening not only within the ranks of the New Model Army, but also within a series of disparate low church groups for whom “toleration” was simply the start. They were spear headed by a remarkable group of radical egalitarians known as “The Levellers”. These proto socialists rejected monarchical and aristocratic privilege; sought the break up of aristocratic-owned estates and their redistribution to yeoman farmers; wished Parliament to be the depository of popular as opposed to kingly sovereignty, and promoted sexual equality and the rights of women. The Levellers also believed in the intrinsic correctness of social equality under God, and advocated for commerce and small business at the expense of inherited wealth and land ownership. It is possible that the Levellers could have ultimately been dismissed as one of several short lived seventeenth century utopian and extreme religious groups such the Diggers, the Ranters, the Quakers and the Proclaimers, but, crucially, they possessed intellectual heft in the shape of their leaders, William Welwyn, Richard Overton and “Honest” John Lilburne, and a power base within the Army which could not be ignored. In the autumn of 1647, the Levellers were to be one of the most influential elements in a fascinating episode in England’s radical history: the so-callled Putney Debates.

How To Put Your House For Sale?
To put your house on sale is a big deal. You can lower your rush to sell your house with the help of a broker who will take the hat of tension from your head to itself. Read below mentioned tips on how to prepare to list your house for sale.
 Set The House Price Appropriately
Buyers find the house price significantly attractive and also a main distinguishing factor. In a competitive market, when the inventory is high, listing your house for sale in Newmarket may be challenging. Even so, if you set an appropriate price, it will appeal to buyers. Pricing the house over value and a lower value will not help the owner to yield the optimum return.
 Finalize The Ideal Broker
If you have less time and prefer to let only some potential buyers visit your house, recruiting a real estate agent is best. They also assist you with document work when you list your home for sale in Vaughan. But, it's important to thoroughly research the broker's background before hiring one.
 Keep The Documents Easily Accessible
Every legal document that belongs to the selling of the house must be kept ready. These documents can be tax receipts for the house, prior purchase proof, allotment letter, certificate of encumbrance, the sanctioned plan of the property, and others.
 Maximize The House Appearance
Taking steps to enhance the house's overall appearance, both internally and externally, may improve its appeal to potential buyers to list a house for sale in Innisfil. It opts for neutral shades that create a sense of spaciousness. Before painting, address any cracks or holes by filling them with putty and repairing plaster damage. Inspecting the electrical equipment within the house, including plug points and switches, is also necessary.

“Green Is Committed, Stock Theft Charged,” Toronto Star. March 27, 1930. Page 02. ---- Bridgeway Man Claims He Got Neither Bonds Nor Money ---- Over the radio W. H. Mathewson of Bridgeway, Ont., heard some stock news which was followed next day by a call from Walter Green, a salesman for the Sterling Bond Corp. Today Green was committed for trial on the following charges of theft: W. H. Mathewson, $1.050; Alfred J. Hall, $302; George W. Churchward, $350; and John Ogilvie, $100. On a further charge of stealing shares in the Securities Holding Corp. and Welland Financial Corp. Green was sent on for trial. Crown Attroney McFadden informing Magistrate Jones that he had been instructed to refuse bail.
Mathewson said he had instructed Green to sell the shares he handed him at prices named in his letter.
‘I’ve not received either bonds or money,’ testified Mathewson who valued the shares at $2.925. Replying to counsel Basil Essery, Mathewson said he didn’t sign orders for sale ‘without limit.’
‘Was the amount you accused him of stealing the correct amount for the shares sold?’ asked Mr. Essery.
‘It was what he got for them,’ replied Matherson.
‘You haven’t suffered any personal loss?’
‘I got nothing for my stock.’
‘The crown has your certificate.’
‘Received Nothing’ Alfred J. Hall of Newmarket, claimed to have sent an order to the Sterling Bond Corp. for three $100 bonds. A cheque for $302 was forwarded.
‘I received nothing but was notified that the bonds would likely be held up for a number of days,’ said Hall.
The case of Churchward was different. He claimed to have visited Greer regarding a job. A bond for $500 was demanded. He ‘scraped’ up $350.
‘One of your cheques for $200 came back marked N.S.F.,’ remarked Mr. Essery.
‘I heard something about it later,’ replied Churchward.
He denied emphatically that he was in be one of the partners of the Sterling Corp.
Accused was committed for trial on all charges.
‘A week ago he underwent a serious operation. He wants to get into Christie St. hospital,’ said W. E. Essery asking in vain for ball.
Ened lead - Pick up a copy Promises
‘I’m going to be good.’ He’ll gaily sing; But he breaks his promise, Just like the spring.
If all the promises to be good made in the police court could be heaped up they would make the world’s highest skyscraper look like tin cans on a dump. And most of them are sincere, but the spirit is stronger than the flesh.
This morning’s drunk list was short and only one customer, Robert McHenry, was fined $50 or one month for a second offence. Two others, disposed to argue about court records, were remanded until to-morrow.
On Being Well-Known One of the best-known men in at least one police division in town, was not in court this a.m. to hear how well-known he is. It would have surprised him. Still being well-known is not always a sign of popularity. This was emphasized when Mike Harod appeared on a charge of having or keeping liquor illegally purchased.
‘Where did he buy it?’ was answered in chorus. Harod’s counsel, W. B. Hrokins, knew his client knew, the police knew, the crown knew. Everybody in Toronto appeared to know the bootlegger and where he lives and what he has for breakfast, and what books he reads. But nobody had invited the widely-known gentleman to court to hear the magistrate’s choristers sing: ‘For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow,’ or else ‘See Him Smiling.’ This must have been an overnight. However, somebody, no doubt, will ring him up this evening and tell him his customer. Mike Harod, was fined $100 and costs or three months.
O.K. After having a mental examination, James Nisbett, guilty of theft, was reported O.K., and was handed to Probation Officer Freer for six months.

Trade Shows: Are They Good For Your Business
Tumblr media
6 Reasons why startups and small companies
need to attend trade shows
Many people who are running a one-man show businesses or even a small business believe that exhibiting at a tradeshow is out of their league because of financial considerations, because the large companies have large marketing departments with large budgets, because a tradeshow booth is not affordable, because they just don't have the vision on how to design a booth, how to transport and assemble one, how to work a tradeshow, etc. Except for the budgetary considerations of actually renting space on the tradeshow floor, everything else is untrue. In this article, I will show you why are tradeshows so important. I am writing this from my own experience, as someone who worked in trade show booths with Morinda, Cutco, and Electrolux actually set up trade show displays, worked the tradeshow floors as an exhibitor and as a visitor. Here are some of the reasons why it is important to attend and exhibit at trade shows, even if you are just starting your business or running a small company: 1. Get competitive intelligence As an entrepreneur running a small company, it is very hard to get competitive intelligence, that is knowledge on how do you compare to your competitors, how do they do things, what makes them more successful than you or less successful than you. Don't forget to put some focus on the less successful scenario also, because you also want to have a list of all the mistakes others make, so you can avoid them. At a trade show, the easiest possible thing you can do is gather hands-on competitive intelligence. It really does not get more hands-on than that, as you have your competition at the tip of your finger. On the surface, they all seem to be extremely confident through their sales pitches and the flashiness of their marketing gimmicks, but they are in a tremendously vulnerable position, as they are giving everything they got and are also worried about *their* competition, which believe it or not... is you! Take advantage of this incredible position. The best thing to do is to walk the trade show at the very beginning - that is, before everybody gets to know everybody among exhibitors - and ask questions, ask many, many questions. Here are some of the things you can get from a simple walk around the exhibit hall: - A four-pound synopsis of your market that you can review at your leisure, from the comfort of your couch that most likely includes a sackful (literally) of literature on suppliers and distributors in your very targeted and unique field, the trade press. - Newmarket concepts. - You can also have yourself put on mailing lists, participate in market surveys and earn complimentary subscriptions to a handful of journals. - More coffee mugs, promotional mints, candy, pens, laminated business cards and free golf balls than you'll ever need. 2. Learn about what your competition thinks about your product or service Again, this is something to be done at the very beginning of a trade show and works best in larger exhibiting halls. Introduce yourself as someone else, interested in the product or service offered by you and your competitors. This is a perfect time for you to use your flirting techniques. Get creative, remember you have nothing to lose, you're in control and the ball is in your court. Get a complete review of your competitor's product line. You can then ask what they think of your company's products and services. Since they don't know who you really are, they'll tell you what they really think. It's actually quite enlightening to hear what your competition really says about you to prospects, remember you are acting as one of their prospects. This is competitive research as its grittiest and the trade show floor is the best place for it. Studies show that companies are more eager to open up and talk about their competition at a trade show than in any other environment (sure you could just call, but you will not get the same effect). At this point, if you are still reading this, you are probably wondering why, in the name of everything rational, I am talking about spying on your competition instead of the obvious reasons why trade shows exist, which is promoting a product or a service? Well, analysts and trade show gurus say that investigating the competition is what these shows are really about. 3. Meet your buyers Show your product or service to people who are hyper-qualified as buyers. Why? Well, because these are the people who have gone through the trouble of attending the show and are really interested in your type of business. You also get to meet current and potential customers and get real feedback and a feel for how is your product or service perceived, how it is really performing and what you can do to make it better, that is, more appealing and more useful for your customers.
Tumblr media
Funding for all your needs! 4. Meet the press Meet with people from your industry's trade press. They always attend those events and you will probably never get a better chance to speak one-on-one with the top editorial staff. You also have a great opportunity to connect with distributors, with wholesalers, with brokers and others in your distribution channel. 5. Sell You can also sell your product or service, right there, on the spot. Just make sure you have everything you need to do so in place. Plan ahead and allow for the opportunity for serious business. Most people who come to your booth will be tire-kickers. They'll grab a handful of pistachios, check out your promotional pens (or USB memory drives loaded with your marketing multimedia presentations - hint, hint), cherry pick your printed materials and move on to the next booth. But every once in a while, you'll bag a live one. Know how and where you'll talk to this person at length. Will it be a spot in the rear of the booth, a nearby conference room, a table in the concession area, a later meeting at your company suite? Folks, trust me on this, a wishy-washy "we'll get back to you" attitude will lose the sale. You have to be prepared, if they see you are not ready to close the transaction right there, on the spot (even if in this day and age the trend continues to move away from on-the-spot order writing on trade show floors), they'll leave. 6. Generate Leads This is actually the meat of attending a trade show - creating a follow-up mailing list. This is what could (and should) potentially bring a return on the major investment you made by attending the trade show. Whether you just collect business cards, write names down on a piece of paper or use the more modern trade show techniques such as scanning people's tags, you must build your mailing list and actually follow up immediately after the show is over, while your marketing effort is still fresh in people's minds. It really makes a good second impression if you follow up promptly, whether by just a call or sending additional literature and information. Your handling of requests for additional information will show potential clients you value their time and provide quality customer service. Read the full article
