Multimodal and Semiotics
Introduction/ Description of the Theory
Semiotics - the association of words and symbols  provides the most fundamental understanding of language. By placing words withpreconceived meanings in a new context, whether audio, visual, or digital, a multimodal text alters its semiotic effect.
Multimodal projects simply have multiple "modes" of communicating a message.
Summary/ Description of the artwork analyzed
Life is a struggle for single father Chris Gardner (Will Smith). Evicted from their apartment, he and his young son (Jaden Christopher Syre Smith) find themselves alone with no place to go. Even though Chris eventually lands a job as an intern at a prestigious brokerage firm, the position pays no money. The pair must live in shelters and endure many hardships, but Chris refuses to give in to despair as he struggles to create a better life for himself and his son.

Summary: The pursuit of happyness is a biography film directed by Gabrielle Muccino as well as reproduced by Will Smith, Steve Tisch, James Lassiter and Jason Blumenthal. Visual Aspect Analysis
Analysing the visual aspect which includes the background, color and shape.
Background
• The background of the film is completely white to make the two main characters on the poster stand out and become an eye catching. The colour of the background means purity, new beginning of a new life.
Color
• There different colors use in the film which has meaning. Red colour is identical with blood. Someone who is injured will feel pain and suffer. The white colour of pursuit in father’s chest means hope, also it means freedom it tends toward the future, towards everything that may come: white is the absolute beginning of new journey.
Shape
• The image of the film poster, it shows that the father wears a well-dressed completely with a brief case and shoes. While the son wears old clothes that have not luxury impression on it. This shows the appearance that their life is not prosperous. And the father is trying to search happiness for his son.
Verbal Sign of the Film
The Pursuit of Happyness
• Red and white colours are used in naming the title. The relation between blood and the red colour and happy is that the ways towards happy is full of pain and struggles: however blood does not appear in the film. Then the word pursuit was written in white colour which make it seen against the background.
Will Smith
• The main character of the film. The film industry intentionally uses the name of as a commercial promotion to make people willing to watch it. The poster intentionally to audience’s attention and makes the film seen based on someone’s experience.
Semiotics on the Film
Shining Light
The shining lights means hope and for a brighter future of the two main character. It emphasizes the bond of the father and son have with each other and indicates that the key theme throughout the film unity and trust they share.
Reflection
In analysing the film, every character has a significant role that plays. And every one of those has a meaning that conveys us. Through multimodal and semiotics, it makes the film entertaining and interactive. It studies the media of dissemination and the modes of communication that people use and develop to represent their understanding of the world and to shape power relations with others. Combination of different elements of art like backgrounds , color and shape can make the film perfect to the eye of the watcher.
