~ @starrlight07 Anne Raven Wilkinson (February 2, 1935 – December 17, 2018) was an American dancer who is credited with having been the first African-American woman to dance for a major classical ballet company. Wilkinson broke the color barrier in 1955 when she signed a contract to dance full-time with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. She was promoted to soloist during her second season with the troupe, and remained with the company for six years. Wilkinson later became a mentor to American Ballet Theatre principal dancer Misty Copeland, presenting Copeland with the 2014 Dance Magazine Award. #ravenwilkinson#blacballerina#blackdancer#brownballerina#browndancer#browngirlsdoballet#mobballet#blacksinballet#trailblazer#legend#becauseofthemwecan#blackhistorymonth#brownskingirls https://www.instagram.com/p/CK1t1p2hyCn/?igshid=o1paw0ksuzs8
This blog is for people who are afraid that they are too old to try that thing they have always wanted to do.
It’s also specifically for people who are adult beginners of ballet.
And finally, it’s for me. I’ve suffered from writer’s block for a very long time. (Years and years.) I often feel like I have this compulsion to write, but also have nothing to write about. So, shortly after I decided to begin ballet lessons at almost 42, I decided that I would write about the experience. I would have something to do and something to write. This will mostly be stream-of-consciousness because I’m a mom who works, and I barely have time to write the first draft, let alone edit.
To begin, I’ll post journal entries that I write after each class. And then, as time allows, I’ll add other thoughts on the in-between days. Right now, my writing happens one day per week, while I’m waiting for my daughter at her ballet class. I spend the first twenty minutes of her class journaling. I spend the rest of the time reading. (Waiting for my daughter at ballet is one of the only times each week that I can read uninterrupted. Right now, I’m working my way through The Handmaid’s Tale.)
I just turned 42. I’ve been married for 10 years and we have two children. My favorite things are all the dreamer-y things: reading, writing (especially with an actual pen on actual paper), photography, painting. I’m a textbook introvert. And this is not the first time I’ve been an adult beginner. (At age 31, I took adult beginner swimming lessons. It turned out, I already knew how to swim--I just lacked confidence in my abilities.) My weekday life is hectic, carting the kids to and fro. My Friday evening ballet class is the perfect way to simultaneously focus and unwind. I love it.
It is a blessing to witness the myriad of ways in which this little light of mine shines that little light of hers. Getting back into the swing of dance school and 7th grade like Oscar Charleston from the Negro League. Her work ethic is as exemplary as her artistic acuity. And she’s still a kid who comes with all the trappings of a growing 12 year old girl. Unassuming of her magic’s strength, she just plugs away. No complaints. And she balances it out with the video games, twizzlers and teen novels. I love me some her...I love me some @aminasophiafenton ...I love me some her...💕 S/O to @danceinstituteofwa for being her safe place to be stretched, challenged, taken seriously and nurtured as a dancer and a person. S/O to #therockschool for two fabulous summer dance intensives. S/O to the @metroforward blue line train conductor for the smooth ride on a early Saturday morning. "Art is unquestionably one of the purest and highest elements in human happiness. It trains the mind through the eye, and the eye through the mind. As the sun colors flowers, so does art color life" -John Lubbock . When diPA dances, we are not just going through movements. Instead, we are raw, vulnerable, and ministering through pure joy! True elevation and happiness will be present anywhere purity is. .
