@spirestar from ———— strangers on rooftops.
"Yeah!" It's an upbeat syllable, and she bounces on her heels alongside; it feels rare, these days, to meet anybody who doesn't at least sort of know her. It's nice! Brynn loves being a rockstar - slash - hero, but it's nice to feel more like a person than a product. "When I've gone through something hard, or I'm feeling a lot, I write to make sense of what's going on inside me. Helps me deal with everything!" He moves closer and takes a seat near the other — though not so near, he hopes, that they're crossing any boundaries. "I'm Brynn, by the way! Hope I'm not intruding on your spot."

ARC REVIEW: Prime Time Romance by Kate Robb
Tumblr media
2.5/5. Releases 9/3/24.
Vibes: Dawson's Creek meets Pleasantville, plot > romance, "and they were roommates", arrested development
Heat Index: 5/10
Turning thirty and newly divorced, Brynn is stuck in a rough patch. Forced to take on a roommate, Josh, to keep up with her mortgage, she's most happy watching Carson's Cove, her favorite teen soap, over and over. Until a random Uber driver shows up with a birthday cake; and both Brynn and Josh wake up in the show. Brynn is now Sloan, the female lead, and she's meant to tie up loose ends the cancel series never could--including making sure that Sloan ends up with her childhood friend, Spencer. Josh is in the role of the town bad boy, Fletcher... and for some reason, even as she lives out the fantasy of falling for Spencer, Brynn finds herself a lot more drawn to her real life roommate than her dream boy...
Okay so. I will admit! This was an outlier for me. Although I respect the premise, I wouldn't say it's something that I immediately thought I would like. The roommates angle isn't always friends to lovers, but this sounded like it could be... And though I've seen a decent amount of Dawson's Creek episodes, it's really not my kind of show. Nonetheless, I appreciate a big swing of a premise, and so I tried it out.
The big swing really isn't the problem with this book. Or--it isn't the main one. Exactly. The issue is that it feels as if the author was so enamored with the fake TV show that it kind of took over the romance. About halfway through the novel, I realized--practically nothing has happened between Brynn and Josh. They've barely spent any time together! And the "why" really bugged me.
Quick Takes:
--So, the thing about this is that I kind of do like the premise of a heroine who is truly in her pathetic era. I mean, I'm Brynn's age, I was in my pathetic era last year, I get it. Her watching the same show twice in a row (six times total)? Not a problem for me in terms of relatability.
And obviously, there was a goal here of having Brynn realize that she needs to prioritize real life and leave this fantasy world, with Josh representing real life.
The issue is that so much of this book, especially in the first half, is Bryn summarizing shit that happened on this fake show. A lot of which, based on what I've seen and heard of Dawson's Creek, is very much like Dawson's Creek. And like? I don't know that you could entirely avoid catching readers up on the show's storylines with a plot like this, but surely, surely some editing would have trimmed it down a bit. I felt like I was getting to know these TV characters, who ultimately wouldn't matter, more than I was getting to know Brynn and Josh.
Certainly more than I got to know Brynn and Josh's love story. We get a hint that she finds him hot before the TV stuff begins, but other than that their relationship is fairly shallow at the beginning of the book. Which is fine! A romance novel is about developing the romance. But because you spend so much time building this TV-verse, there is really no time for Brynn and Josh to truly sell this love story. It's like--suddenly, they're in love. Suddenly, moral of the story.
--That said, I did kind of like the somewhat sinister Uber driver. The parts of this book that were really very much in the Pleasantville lane actually were interesting, to a point. But like. This is supposed to be a romance. Where is my romance?
I can see the appeal, and the way this will cash in a good bit of late 90s/early 2000s nostalgia. As someone who watched a lot of teen soaps in my day... I get it. In some ways, I felt like those aspects were the strongest parts of the book. It just doesn't feel right to call this a romance, and to put romance in the title, when it's really just shoehorned in there. Like, it honestly felt as if it should've been a smaller subplot, with the title changed and the marketing shifted to women's fiction. I see a "woman realizing that she needs to get her life in order" book here. Not a "woman realizing that she needs to get her life in order, triggered by this budding romance with her roommate" book.
The Sex:
There is some. You know where everything is going. It's not super explicit. I think I would've found it hotter if Brynn and Josh had been built with chemistry in mind. But they weren't. So...
The thing is that I don't think this is a bad book, but I do think it falls short as a romance. I liked Kate Robb's writing style. I was hooked in the beginning--it drew me in. But if this is a romance, as the title promises... it misses the mark there.
Thanks to NetGalley and Dial Press for providing me with a copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Tumblr media
her day had been quiet. almost suspiciously easy going, to the point where she's just waiting for the other shoe to drop. brynn’s almost convinced that, upon returning to her lovely, grimy apartment, zee will have burned the building down or the shower will have exploded or something equally terrible. but still, she’s in a surprisingly decent mood after one of the rare slow shifts.
the key clicks in the lock and she pushes the door open slowly, checking around to find the place in no more disrepair than it usually is. she isn’t quite expecting her boyfriend to be home – she’d gotten so used to just never seeing him that she almost could’ve forgotten they even live together. his presence catches her only slightly off-guard, and she opens her mouth to greet him when he bends down to kiss her. “oh. hi,” she manages to get out dumbly.

OOC / HEADCANON
Through most of the beginning events in ESO, Brynn's main verse, she is in fact not Hircine's Packmaster but instead the prodigal pup. Songamdir is still the packmaster until the Great Hunt of the 2nd era occurs. Hircine foreshadows this to her when he says, ❛ A larger hunt looms in your future and I shall watch with great interest. ❜ The Bloodmoon Prophecy of the second era was held in Skyrim and the prey.. was Brynn. Hunted by Songamdir and his Hounds, Brynn fought for her survival under the red moon. When she managed to survive, she was named Hircine's Packmaster and made a blood pact with Hircine.

“You like it?”  He likes to practice her guitar out and about when he can — usually this part of the city is pretty empty, and there’s tons of abandoned warehouses to work on.  Still, Brynn hardly looks surprised when her eyes raise and she shoots the unexpected visitor one of her dazzling, rock - star smiles.  “It’s a new song I’m working on, but I’m a little stuck.”

@purrrfume : "I promise I didn't mean to lie to you back there." Back where? On Amuse Street of course, when Bennie and Brynn first saw each other again. It'd been so long since Bennie last saw Brynn, then to realize she was working with the Esper Union, to find out Sieg was missing too. It was a lot to take on at once.
"The shadow decree were threatening my people and I just-" She could have reached out to Brynn for help. Could have explained that the Shadow Decree was threatening the shop, the entire street, the Moon Eyes, her family. She could have asked for help! But she didn't she bit her tongue and held it back. Because it was her fight and she didn't want to bring Brynn into her trouble. Especially not after finding out Brynn was having their own trouble. What kind of friend would do that? A better friend then one that lied and fought against the person they cared for most.
"I didn't want to..." Burden Brynn. Hold her to the ground when she was meant to fly above. "It's all my fault. I'm so sorry. If I'd told you what I knew sooner you wouldn't have ended up in the hospital. You're so cool you probably would have saved Sieg so much sooner if I'd just helped. Instead I-" ruined it. Messed everything up, got Brynn hurt, put Sieg in danger, got members of her gang killed. There were no real words to describe how thoroughly she'd messed up. All she could do was apologize again and again and again. Then hope that she'll be forgiven even if it feels undeserved. "I... I'm sorry, Brynn."
She’s in a lot of pain — and has been hearing a lot of apologies.  She thinks, tired but not of Bennie, that it’s a wonder she remembers any of them.  Sieg had been a wreck in his guilt, nearly inconsolable due to the pain he’d inflicted on his family.  Q apologized for being unable to help at the end.  Drew for nearly losing her, a look in his eyes that made Brynn feel less like he was seeing them and more like he was seeing a buried family.  The memories are fuzzy, hazy due to a combination of pain and the impressive number of painkillers they’re pumping into her to combat it, but they’re still there.
Bennie’s is different, as Bennie is always different.  Sieg, Q, Drew — they’re all hurting, flawed as anyone.  But they’re not prone to self - hatred they way Berenice is.  Not even Sieg, and they both ———
Brynn wonders how it is he keeps finding himself besides people who believe he saved them, as if Sieg and Bennie both didn’t save Brynn, too.
Their hand shakes when it rests over hers — less due to pain and more due to the focus it requires to move her hand and what the fuck is in these painkillers — but Brynn smiles, sleep but sincere.
“I know you didn’t,” Brynn says, instead of addressing the apology.  “You never — want anybody to get hurt.  You just want to protect everyone, n - no matter what it costs you.  You’re so...so freakin’ cool, Bennie.”  The other Esper’s face goes more stricken, and Brynn’s smile smears in response.  It’s hard to know if she’s saying the right things, high as she is.
He tries again.  “When I — met Sieg, we were both...really hurt.  And I thought I didn’t need anybody, and so did he, but we needed each other.  And we had to learn how to — ask for help.  It’s hard.  It took a long time.”  She squeezes their hand.  She smiles.  “You’re learning, too.  It’s okay if it takes a long time.  I’d wait for you....forever, for sure.”
