BSH Home Appliances to invest in state-of-art factory in Cairo

The German company will invest around €50m in the stove factory.

BSH Home Appliances, Europe’s leading home appliances manufacturer, celebrated the groundbreaking of its first, state-of-the-art factory in Egypt and Africa. The ceremony was attended by the Minister of Supply and Internal Trading, the Minister of Trade and Industry, the German ambassador in Cairo, and high-level officials.

The German company will invest around €50m in the stove factory, the first of its kind in Egypt and on the African continent. The production plant will be located in the 10th of Ramadan City on an area of approximately 160,000 square meters and will create more than 1,000 direct and indirect job opportunities for the manufacturing of Egyptian-made home cooking stoves using German technology. With a capacity of 350,000 units per year, the Group aims to export half of the factory’s output to various countries in Africa and the Middle East by the end of 2024.

Rudolf Klötscher, Chief Sales and Service Officer and Member of the BSH Board of Management, said: “Despite the challenging global economic conditions and developments around the world, BSH Group is proud to launch its first factory in Africa and further expand its business to African markets with their growth opportunities.” The factory complements BSH’s global manufacturing network and will be the home appliance manufacturer’s 41st production facility. Production is scheduled to start by the end of 2024.

Luis Alvarez, CEO of BSH Egypt, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to Egypt and its excellent conditions for new investments: “BSH aims to contribute to the growth and development of the Egyptian economy by creating new job opportunities and utilizing local resources to provide the maximum value to Egyptian society. BSH offers ongoing and continuous expansion and progress, both now and in the future, for strong relationships and inspiring and constructive investments,” he said.

Alvarez underlined the Group’s unwavering commitment and drive to attain sustainability in all facets of its new factory and products.

Juryen understreket at utstillingen er enestående med hensyn til innhold og at den demonstrerer hvilken rolle et nasjonalt museum kan spille som et forum for diskusjon av vanskelige temaer. Les juryens fulle begrunnelse her.

-Teknisk museum har de senere årene skapt mange relevante og utfordrende utstillinger, også internasjonalt, og vunnet priser for dette, og vi er en naturlig og viktig bidragsyter i samfunnsdebatten. At vi også vinner en pris for denne utstillingen som tar opp et vanskelig og viktig tema er ekstra gledelig. Vi skal være relevante og engasjere og samtidig ha ambisjoner om å påvirke i større målestokk. Denne prisen legger press på oss til å fortsette det gode arbeidet, og den utfordringen tar vi, sier direktør ved Teknisk museum, Frode Meinich.

Museet har en naturlig rolle i samfunnsdebatten Kritiske perspektiver på vitenskap, teknologi og medisin blir enda viktigere når det gjelder de store spørsmålene i vår tid med bl.a. rasisme og fremmedfrykt, klima og utnyttelse av gammel og ny teknologi.

-Vi må i mange sammenhenger se tilbake på historien for å forstå dagens virkelighet. Museets oppgave er å koble historie med nåtid og fremtid og samtidig utføre forskning av høy kvalitet som genererer kunnskap, nye synergier og innsikt for omverden, avslutter Meinich.

I Norge er det en pågående offentlig debatt knyttet til rase, mens rasisme er en del av hverdagen for mange nordmenn og folk som bor i Norge. Vi trenger utstillinger som FOLK, for å forstå og kunne delta i disse viktige diskusjonene, men også for å komme opp med nye initiativer og handlinger.

-Det er helt fantastisk at museet vårt nok en gang har klart å markere seg internasjonalt. Prisen bekrefter den høye internasjonale forsknings- og museologiske standard som finnes ved museet, men viktigst, viser det den globale relevansen spørsmålene i utstillingen FOLK utforsker. Vi er dessverre ikke ferdige, verken med vitenskapelig rasisme eller rasisme i samfunnet generelt, sier utstillingskurator for FOLK ved Teknisk museum, Ageliki Lefkaditou.

Excerpt from Chapter 6:

Felicity felt her limitations most definitely, in the worst ways. She’d woken up in the morning, went to swing her legs out of the bed, and twisted her torso painfully, not quite falling face first off the bed. The day had proceeded from there: An attempted shout to Diggle, which then changed to rapid pounding of the wall when her voice refused to sound. All those phases would have to be enacted simply for her to just descend the stairs. Instead of moving of her own power, she had to rely on others,something that frustrated her.

After Lyla had helped her dress, Felicity forgoing a corset, opting for a softer stomach roll, something she could take of on her own, Diggle had handed her a whistle. She could toot it and whoever was closest would know to pay her attention. It was an embarrassing necessity for which Felicity thanked him profusely, her face hot.

Managing her shop would’ve been impossible without Lyla. Felicity normally was the face of the shop; Evelyn’s speech too unrefined to interact much with customers, and Society shunned and would not patronize a store run by a black man, even though he was her partner. Lyla was then the only one able to help with customers. Felicity would sit in her chair near the counter, a slate and chalk in her hands, and quickly write answers for Lyla to tell the customers.

At least that was the plan.

Felicity’s shop opened at nine; an unusuality considering most shops opened two hours earlier. The time lost in business was necessary for Felicity’s creativity. Those hours were when she’d tinker in the backroom, experimenting and building. She did the major repairs Evelyn couldn’t after the doors closed.

The first few customers went directly to Felicity. They were regular patrons, and Felicity was the person they were used to interacting. People were creatures of habit and familiarity. With regret and great embaressment, she’d have to direct them over to Lyla.

One, a Ms Hall, looked between them with a calculating expression as she watched Felicity write answers to questions, and Lyla constantly looking to Felicity for reassurance. Those brown eyes were too intelligent. Her appraising glare burned, and Felicity tried her best to avoid making eye contact. Not soon enough, Ms Hall left, functional clock tightly grasped.

🚨🚨🚨 Saturday Soapbox🚨🚨🚨 Today's soapbox moment is inspired by the latest social media craze 'Birdbox challenge'. For those who don't know,the challenge is based on the #netflix horror film Bird box which features #sandrabullock . In the movie, monsters cause people who look at them to immediately take their own lives — hence the need for constant blindfolds. "Bird Box challenge leads to two-car crash in US, despite Netflix warnings." The above is a headline from one of the papers covering the story. "She had allegedly pulled a beanie over her eyes as part of the challenge, before losing control of her car and smashing into another driver, a light pole and a sound barrier." The challenge involves participants blindfolding themselves while trying to perform everyday tasks, the latest in a long line of dangerous social media phenomena. The fact that this was gonna end with someone getting hurt is not rocket science 🤔🙄. There are so many similar 'challenges'. Some are harmless e.g. #howharddidpubertyhityou challenge, #icebucketchallenge to the more dangerous #birdboxchallenge , #kikichallenge. I don't mind the harmless challenges, little bit of fun never hurt no-one. I'm not a scruge guys. It's the ones taking it to the extreme all for the sake of going viral. This is partly why we are making stupid people famous as a society in my opinion. How about we come up with challenges that actually challenge us to grow. (I guess it's not as fun 😏). Something that will actually benefit your life in a positive way rather than put you in harm's way. Like the #5adaychallenge , #drinkwaterchallenge , or even #randomactofkindness challenge maybe #readabook challenge etc. ________________________________________ I tried to push this before and I'm gonna try it again, #techfastchallenge. Can you go 24 hours with out logging into FB, Insta, Twitter etc for personal reasons. I appreciate for some social media is business related. I'm talking non business related scrolling. When I was young in my early 20s I did not want to work in hotels, I wanted to be a computer programmer whatever that meant to me that time I don’t know. I did a course in Computer programming soon after secondary School as I was not selected to go to university. One day When I came to Lilongwe on a trip to Kamuzu Central Hospital with my father, we passed by Lilongwe hotel to see his friend. When I got inside and saw how smart the place was, the smiles on waiters faces, the glitter in their eyes, I was inspired and decided to work in a hotel one day. The hotel happened to be Capital Hotel on 23rd September, 1999. This was the beginning of my great carrier. I was quite happy with what I was doing at work. Then one day after a year in employment I was reading a book. They were asking me very simple questions: “Are you doing something you want to do throughout your whole life?” “Are you excited to wake up every morning and sleep late? Working in hotels has been always my passion but I found that meeting new people and interacting with greatmen in society became something I was even more passionate about. I soldiered on. Alll my friends laughed at me saying amapelekera zakudya kwa azungu. They did not know my destiny. By year 2000 I had already shaken hands with the vice president, hon Aleke Banda. What am I trying to say….. Follow your dreams. And continue to try till you make it. Stay positive. Don't listen to negative people. And only listen to those who made it in life. British Society for the History of Science Twitter Conference report

Last week, on Wednesday 12 February, Archives and Special Collections contributed a paper to  the British Society for the History of Science’s (BSHS) first ever twitter conference. The call for papers described how the novel conference style would work:

A series of short and snappy papers, on the theme of Global and International Histories of STEM, ran throughout the day, from 07:10 to 20:30- over 13 hours! The Archives and Special Collections paper explored 5 University of Strathclyde STEM individuals whose work and research had global implications and whose stories can be uncovered in the archives.
