WIG REVIEW: ON THE BASIS OF SEX
Tumblr media
Ruth Bader Ginsburg is our very favorite superhero and deserves a movie origin story befitting the legend she is. That movie is the documentary RBG (now Oscar nominated!) This movie is the Lifetime level film somehow allowed to play in theaters starring the chick from (UGH) The Theory of Everything and (UGH) the older dude from Call Me By Your Name. It is boring and long and not suitable for the supreme being that is RBG. Also there are some wigs. Let’s discuss!
Tumblr media
The film begins in the 1950s, when RBG was a student at Harvard Law School. Faced with sexism and her husband’s cancer diagnosis plus a 1yo daughter to care for, she went to 2x the classes and was still met with side eye from dean Sam Waterston. Meanwhile, Felicity Jones (as RBG) gave us this 50s curl lewk which is completely fine? Having a curling iron budget is nice?

Also there is a lot in this movie that really should not be, such as an RBG sex scene that even diehard Ginsburg fans NEVER ASKED FOR PLEASE NO. ALSO ARMIE HAMMER IS NEVER NOT BORING. BYE.
Tumblr media
Fast forward about a decade and RBG is now a law professor at Rutgers and donning this far more recognizable pulled back hair lewk. Most of Felicity Jones’ lewks are just a matter of hairstyling not wigs which is the way to go always and honestly one of (if not the only? ) best thing about this movie.

And then we meet Justin Theroux. He plays Mel Wulf (yes that’s a name!), RBG’s frenemy/fellow lawyer and a person somehow capable of making you annoyed by the ACLU.
Tumblr media
I often talk about how man wigs are 90% always bad and this one is just one of the WORST. Not only are the color and texture sloppy, but the telltale bad man wig issue - the jutting out at the back of the neck - is TERRIBLE. Theroux’s tan job doesn’t help. Also did I mention that his character actually manages to make you annoyed by the ACLU? NOPE.
Tumblr media
Also Kathy Bates shows up at one point wearing every movie’s standard “old lady who doesn’t give a damn” outfit and government issue old lady wig. Still, Kathy Bates can do no wrong (except maybe signing on to be a part of this movie).
Tumblr media
Anyway, RBG manages to work with Justin Theroux to take down some sexist tax laws and has to lobby against sexist Sam Waterston and Stephen Root who conveniently also play the sexist law professors she had some 15 years before at Harvard. I DON’T KNOW WHY EITHER. WAS THIS A BUDGETARY CONCERN? And it should be noted that this whole movie is basically about SEXIST TAX LAWS and also is called ON THE BASIS OF SEX as if this was all just a writing assignment for an accounting class but the teacher also wanted you to get marginally creative and also all the good titles were already taken. In every way, this was a very taxing movie. NO THANK YOU PLEASE.
Tumblr media
In conclusion, if you want to see a movie about how badass and amazing RBG is...please see RBG.
VERDICT: DOESN’T WURQ
