Chapter 14: Through Jihyo’s Eyes
Jihyo and Taehyung had been friends since birth. Their mothers were friends since college, were at each other’s weddings, and helped each other out when the trial and tribulations of motherhood became something that only another mother could help them get through. So, Jihyo and Taehyung were pretty close most of their lives. They played together in kindergarten, worked on all their school projects together in first and second grade, but began to find their place in different groups of friends around the third grade when Park Jimin started in their class. Jihyo wasn’t bothered at first, as that was about the time she made friends of her own. She and Taehyung would still spend a lot of time together while their mothers sat in the cafeteria catching up on their busy lives every Friday after the four of them would go get dinner after school. That was their special time, every Friday. They would get picked up from school, choose the place to eat, and spend hours at one of their houses having the time of their lives. Playing in the backyard, watching TV, destroying each other in video games, whatever they could think of, they were able to make the best of their time together. On one particular Friday, however, Jihyo had noticed that Taehyung had begun to change.
Twelve year-old Jihyo, with long black hair and an optimistic grin, walked down the hall of her middle school. This was the time to start studying. Though the high school was still a bit of a ways away for her, being only a first year in middle school, it was never too early to start preparing. Cram schools, study sessions with friends, anything she could do to make sure she got into a good high school! Despite her new busy schedule, it was Friday! Today she was going to relax, get some good food in her belly, and hopefully today would be the day she would beat Taehyung in that stupid fighting game! Gathering her stuff, she said goodbye to her friends and hurried out the door of her classroom. As she made her way to the entrance, she saw him. Taehyung, even back then a good looking heartthrob. All the girls were always talking about him, how he would smile at them when they said hello, how his laugh would brighten up any room he was in. And they were right, Jihyo knew that better than anyone else. As she approached him, she saw him standing up against the wall, talking with Jimin and a few other boys that were a year older than him. They were pretty handsome fellows too, but Taehyung was the only one Jihyo really cared about.
“Taehyung!” She called, making the group of boys look in her direction. As she got closer, she saw Taehyung roll his eyes a bit, and nudge one of his friends with a slight grin. Jihyo’s steps slowed to an eventual stop and she looked at him. “Are you ready to go?” Taehyung didn’t respond for a moment, and Jihyo frowned. “…Taehyung?”
“Uhhh I’m not going today.” Taehyung said simply, giving her a forced smile. She could see that he looked uninterested in her at that moment, and it confused her. Why wasn’t he coming?
“Is everything okay? You busy?” Quickly, Taehyung nodded.
“Yeah! Yeah, busy…whatever…” he chuckled, and the boys around him followed. Jihyo felt a bit uneasy.
“Oh uh….alright then?” She shifted a bit. “Mom didn’t say anything about plans being canceled but-“
“I already said I’m not going. Tch, what are you, my girlfriend or something?!” Jihyo’s face heated up in embarrassment as she gripped her bag tightly, looking away from the boys who all started to laugh a bit. Why was Taehyung acting this way? She didn’t understand it!!
“O-okay…” she said simply. “Bye, then.” She waved, but Taehyung simply looked away from her. She felt her chest tighten a bit as she walked past them, shoulders slumped as she made her way home. As she walked away, she heard the boys beginning to talk.
“I thought she actually was your girlfriend, dude!” It was Jimin, he was laughing.
“Oh God, no. She’s cute I guess, but totally not my type.”
“What plans is she even talking about?” Another boy asked. His voice was a bit deeper.
“Something with our moms. We get dinner every week and do other lame crap. But I’ve started living by a new motto in my life: I always do what I want.” As the boys continued to laugh and chat, Jihyo’s pace quickened and she headed home.
That Friday was dull, the plans ended up actually being canceled last minute. The Friday after that, the same thing happened. Then the Friday after that, and even after that. It bummed Jihyo out, and left her in her room, doing more studying that she really wanted too. Dahyun would come around every once in a while, but Jihyo was still wondering why Taehyung had refused to come to hang out with her again. But it all made sense one Sunday.
Jihyo was watching TV with Dahyun that day, the two eating some ice cream and enjoying each other’s company. Jihyo’s mother was on the phone in her room, chatting with someone, but Jihyo wasn’t sure who. Probably a work friend? It was then, however, right after the best part of the movie that Jihyo’s mother rushed out of the house.
“Wait, what are you talking about? What do you mean he’s getting arrested?! Where’s Taehyung?!” Jihyo and Dahyun watched her mother make her way out the door, grabbing her coat in the process. Dahyun and Jihyo shared a glance.
“Who is she talking too?” Dahyun asked, the girls turning in their seats and pulling back the curtains to peer through the window behind the couch. They saw Jihyo’s mother standing with Taehyung’s mother, trying to talk to her, but it seemed she was an inconsolable mess. She kept motioning to the house, and it was only then Jihyo saw it. Mr. Kim, Taehyung’s father, being dragged out in handcuffs by two policemen and stuffed into a car. It was moments after that another policeman was walking out with Taehyung, who yanked his arm out of her embrace. He was holding ice on his face, and his jacket was torn to shreds. “Oh my God, who do you think he got into a fight with?” Dahyun asked. Jihyo grabbed her coat and hurried out, forcing Dahyun to come along.
The girls headed outside, and across the street. When Jihyo’s mother saw them, she frowned.
“Dahyun, it is best you go home. Jihyo, get back inside.” She said. Jihyo went to Taehyung as she was led to the ambulance pulling up. “Jihyo!”
“Taehyung!” She called. He glanced over and rolled his eyes.
“Crap…” he mumbled, hopping up in the back of the ambulance. “What?”
           “What happened?”
“What’s it to you?” he huffed. “It’s not serious, stay the hell out of my business! Your mother too!”
           “But-“
“I said stay out of it!” He snapped. Jihyo blinked, stepping back as Taehyung simply finished hoisting himself up and into the back of the car, the doors closing and the ambulance drove away. Jihyo looked at the police car with his father in it drive away as well, before turning to her mother and Taehyung’s mother. She saw her mother tightly hugging her friend, trying to talk to her in hopes of calming her down before taking her back into the house. Dahyun and Jihyo returned to Jihyo’s house to finish their movie.
Taehyung was not at school the entire next week, and Jihyo’s family didn’t hear from them either. It wasn’t long after that Taehyung moved out of the house across the street. They weren't even given the new address, but Jihyo was able to find them after a few weeks. Jihyo tried to talk to Taehyung when she saw him at school after he returned, but that didn’t end well.
“I told you to leave me alone.” Taehyung groaned, resting up against the back of the school with Jimin, and boys she learned were named Yoongi and J-Hope. “You’re becoming obsessed with me or something, aren’t you?”
           “I’m just worried.” Jihyo said.
           “…Why?”
“Ever since you guys moved we haven’t heard from you. My mother keeps trying to talk to your mom but isn’t getting any responses. You don’t come to class anymore and-“ she glanced down at his hand. “-Is that a cigarette?!” Taehyung scoffed.
“Yoongi-Hyung gave it to me, so what?” he asked, lifting it up to his mouth. Before he could put it in between his lips, Jihyo slapped it out of his hand. “HEY!”
“Are you nuts?! If you get caught you’ll be suspended, or even expelled! How did you guys even get cigarettes anyway?!”
“Why do you care?” Yoongi asked. “Dude, I thought this girl wasn’t your girlfriend.”
“She isn’t.” Taehyung said. “Can you leave? I thought I made myself clear I didn’t want to hang out with you or your bitch ass friends anymore, thank you.” Jihyo frowned, trying to hide the lump in her throat and the tears welling in her eyes. “What? Oh God, are you going to cry? Fucking…” he groaned. “Just go away.”
“You’re the worst.” Jihyo said. “Why can’t you go back to the nice, kind, likable Taehyung you were before?” Taehyung immediately glared at her. Jihyo saw his body swing around, a fist flying towards her. She shrieked, flinching away only to see his fist fly into the wall. When she looked at it, she saw his hand twitch before he pulled it back and stuffed it into his pocket.
“Next time, I won’t miss. Now leave us alone…” he hissed. Jihyo could see the anger and seriousness in his eyes, and she knew then there was nothing she could do. She stepped back, glancing at the other two boys behind him, only seeing them look away. “Go.” He said, and she finally turned away and rushed back into the school. “God, she’s so annoying!” Taehyung said.
“I feel kind of bad. I hope she’s okay.” J-Hope said.
“You’re too soft, Hoseok.” Yoongi said. “Don’t tell me you think she’s cute or something.”
           “Well, no. Just…I dunno.”
“…Why do you let him hang out with us again?” Taehyung teased, grinning when Hoseok shoved him.
“Don’t talk down to your Hyung.” He pouted, taking the cigarette. “Gimme that.” He put it to his lips and took a puff, scrunching up his nose. Taehyung began to laugh as he was handed back his cigarette. “This is why I just drink.” He said.
Back in the school, Jihyo ran straight to the principal and told him exactly what she saw. He was grateful for her, saying that Taehyung and his new friends had begun to cause a lot of problems and that the six of them were starting to influence a first-year student as well. It wasn’t long before the three were called from the intercom to the principal’s office. Jihyo rested her head on the desk as she heard Jimin, who was outside in the hallway, shout:
“What the hell? Who ratted on them?” She, for some reason, felt a wave of guilt wash over her. She didn’t want to get him in trouble, but he was smoking on campus. If they got caught by a teacher, they would be in even more trouble that way!
It turned out Jihyo’s confession to what she had seen to the principal resulted in Hoseok, Yoongi, and Taehyung getting a suspension from school. The other four, Jimin, Namjoon, Jin, and the youngest, Jungkook, who was a new member of their little squad, knew it was her. They knew because Taehyung told them. So, every time they would cross paths with her and Dahyun, or her and another friend, they would snicker or whisper. She felt like they were back in elementary school, and she had been the one diagnosed with “cooties” or something that kept all-boys away from her. Other girls talked about her a bit too, those who were fawning over the seven attractive bad boys of the school. These girls weren’t happy with her tattling on them and getting them into trouble.
“Don’t let them get to you.” Dahyun said, the duo sitting under a tree eating lunch. “Those three shouldn’t have been smoking on campus. The girls defending them are stupid, you’re smart.”
“Oh I know. Still, it’s kind of aggravating being starred at every day.” She said simply. “I wish Taehyung wasn’t so….stupid. He was just so nice, and then…out of nowhere, whatever happened with his dad happened, and they moved and now…it’s like he’s a totally different person.”
“He is.” Dahyun said. “You’re better off without him. Whatever you guys had was nice but…” she shrugged. “He’s changed.” Jihyo nodded, feeling her eyes water as she set her lunch down on the grass in front of her. Dahyun saw this, setting her lunch down as well as she scooted closer, pulling Jihyo into a hug. “Aww, Jihyo, don’t cry…I’m still here…” Jihyo clung to Dahyun tightly, nuzzling her friend as she continued to cry into her shoulder. It wasn’t loud, it wasn’t messy, but it was long. A good, long cry was all she needed. When she lifted her head from Dahyun’s now wet shoulder, she wiped her eyes.
“I’m okay.” She smiled, nodding her head in reassurance.
Jihyo tried to forget about Taehyung, and just accept the way he had chosen to live. And it worked. Dahyun was trying to help Jihyo get into different things after school with some friends, like karaoke, study groups, and trips to the local bakery with friends in order to keep her mind on more positive things. Plus, with Taehyung still on suspension, it helped not seeing him or talking to him at all. Eventually, the looks from other boys and girls kind of stopped, because it wasn’t fun for them to do when Jihyo wasn’t reacting to it.
Jihyo was sitting on her porch one day, resting in the cool breeze of spring as she did some homework. She was home alone, her mother had gone out to do some grocery shopping and her father was at work. It was a nice opportunity to get air in her lungs and feel the breeze on her face and in her hair. It was then, however, that her peaceful moment was interrupted by a group of voices.
“Aaaaaah~. Hyung, you’re so mean!” Jihyo looked up, barely seeing heads make their way down the street.
“You’re just a baby, Jungkook.” Another voice, it sounded like Jimin.
“Yeah, you need to toughen up a bit. You’re super cute, but if you combine that baby face with a few swear words and muscles, you’ll be unbeatable.” That was Taehyung.
           Crap.
“Hey, can we like to hurry?” Taehyung asked his friends. “I hate this street.”
“Isn’t this where your stalker, Jihyo, lives?” Jimin asked and the guys laughed. Jihyo felt her blood boil.
“Yeah, exactly my point.” That angered her, and she immediately stood up, walking to the front of her house and opened the gate, stepping onto the street.
“I’m not his stalker, you jerks!” She snapped, and the boys stopped before her. Some were smoking cigarettes, others were drinking from shared bottles of alcohol, and others were simply walking and talking when they saw Jihyo standing before them. Taehyung rolled his eyes, crossing his arms.
“I’d beg to differ.” He said.
“I’m not a stalker!” Jihyo repeated again. “You’re just a bad boy! A bad, bad boy who does illegal things and acts like an idiot! I was just doing what I had too.”
“Well it’s by you doing what you had to or whatever that we got suspended.” Taehyung snapped. “You know damn well what we do is none of your business!” Jihyo clenched her fists.
“You’re such a jerk! You’re so different now.” She shouted, eyes watering. “I used to like you so much!” She turned red, and Taehyung scrunched up his nose in disgust. “I hate it.”
“I don’t care if you hate it or not, what I do is none of your business!” He stepped closer, shoving her just a bit. She stumbled back. “You’re just jealous that I found friends that are better than you, aren’t you? Don’t be jealous because you’re so damn lame!” Jihyo frowned.
“You’re such a jerk off!” She shoved him back. “You’ve become so selfish and so rebellious and I’ll never understand why! I thought…” she dropped her hands to her sides. “I thought we were friends and we would tell each other everything and help each other out….” She looked down. “But next thing I know you act like you never knew me.” Taehyung rolled his eyes.
“I’m not standing here listening to this anymore.” He walked past her, stuffing his hands on his pockets. “God, I wish I didn’t know you.”
“Same here!” Jihyo said. She saw his other friends pass by, some glancing at her and others nudging each other and chuckling in amusement at what they had just witnessed. When Jihyo saw neighbors sticking their heads out, including Dahyun’s mother, she got embarrassed and hurried into her house, slamming her door.
“What’s her problem?” Namjoon asked, glancing at Taehyung. Taehyung shook his head.
“I have no idea. She’s absolutely insane.” He shook his head. “Whatever. Maybe now she’ll leave me the hell alone.”
After At this moment, Taehyung and Jihyo stopped talking to each other for good. Throughout the rest of middle school, into high school, the duo refused to acknowledge one another, and they liked it that way. As time passed, Taehyung continued to get into trouble with his friends, getting in fights, smoking cigarettes, skipping class, and making a name for themselves within the school. As high school progressed, however, Jihyo began to notice that Taehyung would start teasing her when they would pass in the hallways, instead of flat out ignoring her. It bothered her to no end, having him come up close and hit on her, or make comments, and when she would respond with an attempted smack to the chest or face, he would grip her hand and give a smirk, before letting her go and strolling away with a simple shrug. Jihyo never understood why he, all of a sudden, started talking to her again.
And honestly, that pissed her off even more. How could he act like all the arguing, all the betrayal, all the tears, and heartache on her behalf between them never happened?! It angered her, even more, when you started at school, and he directed all of his energy to you, a vulnerable new kid who had no idea of Taehyung’s devilish ways. Despite all of her efforts, however, you were swayed. You were swayed by Kim Taehyung, and she had to sit back and watch you fall into his grasp. All the advice, all of the experiences you have had…..
…But at the same time, you looked so happy when you brought him into class for the first time, how proud you were when you brought him to Professor Choi to hand in all of his homework. Or, when you called her over to your house, face red as you talked about the kisses you both shared outside your house after the festival. It was then that Jihyo knew she couldn’t stop you from falling for him, much less date him when the time came around. Though it bothered her, and every time she saw Taehyung with you filled her with memories of the happy moments they shared in childhood, she was glad you were happy and making the best of it.
As Jihyo was sitting in class, all of these things crossed her mind. She watched Professor Im stands in front of the room, reading from the textbook. She had to admit, she was amazed at how much you had managed to keep the seven boys in line and got them to start going to class. They, mostly Taehyung, had gotten into fewer fights with other kids or teachers, and were overall just…normal people for the most part, with the bad boy persona hanging over them only slightly. She hummed to herself, eyes glancing up as she saw Professor Im walking past her desk. Her head turned to follow him, and it landed on you, whose head was on the desk. Her eyes widened, and she glanced up to see Taehyung had a similar expression on his face. His eyes darted up towards Jihyo, and their eyes connected for a moment. They saw you lift your head, and your face flushed.
“Are you okay?” Professor Im asked. “….I understand you’re recovering but if that were the case you should have called in and taken another day off.” Jihyo frowned. Professor Im, out of all of the teachers, was pretty disliked due to his strict attitude and generally uncaring behavior. She watched you fumbled to open your book and find what page you were on. When your eyes lifted up, Jihyo held up her fingers and motioned the page and section of the textbook.
However, before you could read it, Jihyo was surprised to see Taehyung stand up, book in hand. All the students were looking in his direction, and he simply began to read the passage. Jihyo watched with wide eyes, this being the first time since sixth grade that Taehyung participated in anything class-related. When he was done, he closed the book.
“…There.” He said, sitting back down. Professor Im looked at you again, seeing you were red in the face.
“Maybe you should go to the nurse. Miss. Park.” Jihyo glanced up at her name being called. “Make sure she gets there alright.”
“Yessir.” Jihyo stood up, walking with you towards the door. When she saw Taehyung’s eye, he simply smiled at the two of you. Jihyo heard Taehyung get sent to Principal Bang’s office as you both headed towards the nurse. “You feeling okay?” she asked you.
“Mhm…I just want to rest.” You responded, rubbing your head. “I really thought I could get through the day. Guess I was wrong.”
“Well, can’t blame you for trying.” Jihyo smiled. When they arrived in the infirmary, Jihyo helped you to one of the beds while explaining what happened to the nurse. She spent a few moments sitting with you to make sure you were comfortable. “I’m going to head to class, okay? Rest up.”
“Thanks, Jihyo.” You smiled, closing your eyes as the nurse gave you ice. Jihyo thanked the nurse before leaving the room. She headed back down the class, taking a long way so she could think a bit. She was thinking back to how seriously Taehyung took the idea of standing up and reading that passage in your place. It put her at ease, somewhat.
“I guess Taehyung isn’t that bad, after all…” she mumbled to herself. As she turned the corner, she heard someone shout:
“HEY! STOP RUNNING IN THE HALLS!”
“SHUT UP!” Jihyo sighed, turning the corner to see Taehyung whiz by her. She turned her head as he slowed to a stop, turning to her while running in place. “Hey…is she at the nurse?”
“Yes.” Jihyo said. “She’s probably already asleep, I took a long way back.” Taehyung nodded, before getting ready to run again. “Hey,” Jihyo called, and Taehyung now fully stopped moving, turning to her.
“…Yeah?” Jihyo walked over to him, crossing her arms.
“….If you two are really going to date, and she and I are friends…we should try to…get along.” She sighed. “You’re still an idiot and I don’t think that’ll ever change but…for her sake…” she stuck out her hands. “Let’s stop giving each other a hard time, hm?” Taehyung chuckled and shook her head.
“Oh, that’ll never happen.” He said simply, grinning. Jihyo groaned.
“You know what I mean.” She said. Taehyung nodded. “If you hurt her, I’ll break your face.” Taehyung laughed a bit.
“You and a handful of other people have it out for me if I mess this up. Trust me, I won’t.” Jihyo nodded.
“Good. Now, don’t wake her up when you rush in there, okay?”
“Yep.” He put a peace sign over his eye, before rushing down the hallway. Jihyo sighed, watching him hurry down the hallway. When he was gone, she turned on her heel and headed down the hallway with a smile on her face.
