synopsis: your ex boyfriend cannot take your rejection after you had to face his
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
you and matt murdock had a long history. one that took you back to childhood even. but it would be too much on reminisce on now.
matt was never the jealous type but everytime you’d flirt with someone, he would lose it. college had been a rough time for him to not be jealous, not when you were getting attention from everyone left and right, and sometimes you’d leave him out in the cold.
“y/n.” he called you to the library one night. sitting down in front of him, you twiddled your thumbs, nervous at his asking. he had been distant for almost a week, he had chosen to branch out and had found a new friend in a guy named foggy. you had yet to be introduced but you’d seen him and matt together around campus more than you saw matt by himself.
“i love you. and i’ve always loved you, and seeing you with other people it’s- it’s been killing me.” matt forced the words out. you were in shock, but you leaned forward and kissed him, “about time, murdock.”
that had been years ago.
“y/n! i need your help!” matt called from his office. setting your paperwork down in your office, you sighed, fixing your skirt as you stood up to tread over to his office.
you knocked on the door, “what’s up?” you weren’t bothered by his asking for help but you had been passive aggressive to him all week ever since they had hired karen page to be the office secretary and matt had been paying more attention to her than you.
you tried to understand. you and matt had been together for years, you’d understand if he wanted to try something new or if he was just tired of you, but your love for him wasn’t swelling up your heart anymore. you even stopped going over to his apartment, moving out and getting your own even after years of living together.
you didn’t really have a good excuse other than ‘i need my space’ and it hurt matt, he was upset for weeks. but now it was your turn to be upset.
“i want to buy a new chair and desk for karen, but i don’t know what to get her.” he motioned for you to step into the office, pointing to the chair in front of him.
you pursed your lips, “and why is it you want to buy it for her? you don’t even pay her.”
matt shrugged, “because i like her.”
his blatant honesty made you nod, aware that he couldn’t see you nod, you clicked your tongue, “im heading home early.” you stood up without another word, collecting some of your belongings from your office, you bid foggy a goodbye and shut the door, closing yourself off to matt murdock.
that had been almost a year ago.
now in present day, you were snuggled into the side of your supposed-to-be-dead boyfriend. his stubble had been scratching at you all night and so you were tossing and turning on the bed.
as you turned to the other side, you screamed, a figure was currently breaking into your apartment. he was agile but he still stumbled back on the furniture near the window. almost as if he couldn’t see..
“frank!” you shook frank awake and he gasped as he opened his eyes. without even blinking, he pulled a gun out from under his pillow and cocked it.
“where?” he gruffed. his eyes were wild and murderous. your heartbeat was ramming in your chest as you pointed to the figure that just stood at the other end of your apartment. he was walking towards the two of you and frank held his gun up, standing up to face the figure.
you had been aware of franks past. he had mentioned nearly everything and you didn’t care that he was the most brutal, violent killer that roamed freely in new york. he was still your baby in your eyes.
“red. what in the fuck are you doing here?” frank spoke after a quick realization. “do you know what time it is? especially for you to be breaking into a place that, hell, ain’t even mine?” frank seemed too nonchalant for you, and you worried.
stepping up from the bed, you ran to franks side and you hid slightly before your eyes took in the figure before you.
“matt?” you questioned after you saw him closely.
“wait- you know red?” frank turned around to you and you nodded, “yeah. matt and i, he used to be my neighbor.”
matt snapped out of his daze of hearing your voice for the first time in a year and shook his head, “we dated for six years. id say that was more than just neighbors.”
frank looked at you with raised eyebrows, you closed your eyes and took the gun from him, “go back to bed. we can talk about this in the morning.”
frank nodded, “alright. but just holler if he tries any shit.” he gave matt another look before shuffling off to your bed.
“what are you doing here? you think this is okay? i could have you arrested!” you tried to whisper quietly as frank had been snoring now.
matt took his mask off and you sighed, “and you’re the devil of hell’s kitchen? really?”
matt looked at you and laughed, “don’t talk to me like that when you’re sleeping with a murderous marine in your bed. he’s killed so many people…”
you shrugged, “we’ve all made our bad decisions. i need you to leave.”
“no. i needed to know why,” he paused, collecting what he wanted to say, “why did you leave? and why does your heart beat for him?”
you paused, “what? what about my heart beat?”
matt grimaced, “it beats like you’re in love with him.”
you crossed your arms, nervous at his observation. you looked back at the bed and shrugged, “maybe i am.”
matt’s voice quivered now slightly, “it never beat like that for me.”
the silence after was unbearable. you sobbed quietly, stepping away from matt.
“you really have the audacity to come to my apartment in the middle of the night, demand to know why i left you and now get sad that im more in love with someone else than i ever was with you?” you wiped your tears, laughing slightly.
matt didn’t like how bad it made him look, how everything put together really made him the bad guy. in his mind, he was in the right for being angry at you for leaving.
“you loved karen more than me!” you threw your hands up in frustration, “i never stood a chance next to her, matt. you’re only here because karen didn’t want you.” you hated to be so mean to him, to tell him the truth but considering the situation, it was more than necessary.
you felt a familiar set of hands embrace you. franks scent overwhelmed you and you turned into his hug, sobbing into his chest.
“get out, red. before we both do something we’ll regret.” frank gruffed out, his hands caressing you as you cried.
“come on, baby.” he tried to soothe you. “let’s go back to bed.”
matt had stepped out onto the fire escape and watched as you and frank returned to bed. he also saw the longing feeling of you reaching out for frank, and before he left, he could hear the loud thumping of your heart beating only for frank.
