A/N i hope to turn this into a series. but i am lazy and unreliable so we’ll see how this goes :) enjoy this very awkward first interaction between mark and his future bf. i will hopefully comeback and edit this someday but there shouldn't be anything too bad besides improper grammar, run on sentences, lowercase i’s, and many many commas. but if there's anything horrific don't be afraid to point it out to me as i will correct it right away.

Descript: marks got a crush on the reader, reader wants to hang out and get to know mark while battling feelings and heteronormativity (god that's a big word)

The dull ache in my skull thumped harder and harder as the teacher droned on about something to do with genetics. I look to the clock and rub harshly at the bridge of my nose desperate to get the pain out of my head but reading that i still had under half an hour left of the class (according to the busted clock on the wall) only made my head pound harder, my eyes flick from the clock to the board where the teacher had turned around and was slowly drawing some diagram on the chalkboard behind him, i shake my head just as something glints out of the corner of my eye looking over my shoulder i lock eyes with a kid i had seen around school grounds from time to time, he was looking at me with a far off glint in his eye and a small hue of red covering his ears. I lifted up my hand and did a little wave to him paired with a small smile, the sun must have reflected off his glasses when he turned his head and the light caught my eye. As if someone shocked the kid he snapped back with a flinch, the blush on his ears covering over his cheeks he offered an awkward smile and ducked his head to scratch at his neck “is something more interesting than my lesson Mr. L/N?” I swiveled my head to look at the teacher “no sir. Sorry sir it won't happen again. I'm all ears'' i smiled brightly at the man as he rolled his eyes and the other classmates snickers in the background, i wait for the teacher to turn back around before risking a glance at the kid who i caught looking at me earlier to find him still in the same position; head bowed with his hand rubbing at the back of his neck.

I watched as his glasses slipped down his nose and his soft looking hand leave his neck to push them back up only after doing so did he look up, his flush was gone but when he caught my eyes again it came back full force and his eyes widened i couldn't help the small amused smile that spread on my face i could only bite the inside of my cheek to stop it from turning into a grin, the poor kid looked like a deer caught in headlights, and when he clocked the smile on my face he pursed his lips into a tight line and looked over my head to the clock, i swiftly ducked to peak at the clock as well and gathered my book and notebook as the bell rung. I was gonna talk to this kid, he was too cute not to.

I turn back around to see him taking his sweet time in gathering his stuff “last class of the day? Or do you participate in the clubs?” I got up and (hopefully) smoothly walked toward him “I'm not in any clubs.” his voice was quiet and cut off at the end “what do you do after school anyway?” he pushed past me and left the classroom subtly giving me time to follow “i usually go home” i bob my head “yeah not much to do around here without friends. You got any friends?” he shook his head tugging the strap of his bag as we got closer to what i assumed was his locker “oh no way” he flinched at my enthusiasm when we reached his locker (to be fair i didn't use my ‘inside voice’ and shouted a bit so I can't blame him) “dude sick! Its like destiny or something.” he gave me a quizzical look as i moved around him and down a few lockers “your 187. And I'm 184! See this is my locker” i waited until he was close enough to me to unlock my locker and fling it open he hummed quietly and brushed his fingers over some of the tapes i kept in my locker “you listen to the beastie boys?” he’d tugged a flashy tape out of the collection and thumbed over the colorful scribbles on the case and the clearly scrawled title “uh yeah a little, I like a lot of music” he nods and puts it back and steps away from my locker letting me close it “so you can call me Y/N and i can call you?” his face heated up “mark” he turned to walk down the hallway “so.. Mark.” he pushed his glasses up and looked over at me “you've got no friends. You're not in any clubs. You go home everyday after school. You listen to the beastie boys. I think it's safe to say I'm your friend now, don't you agree?” he bit his lip and nodded'' I guess” he smiled when I fist pumped the air “sweet! So, need a ride home, friend?” I grinned at him as the flush on his cheeks grew to a bright cherry red “uh. Ok '' I bobbed my head and skipped ahead of him to push the door open and hold it open for him “uh its that one over there, the red convertible” he nodded and clutched the straps of his backpack closer to his chest. “Common I'm not gonna kill you or anything. Get in” I opened the door for him before jumping into the driver seat, he awkwardly runs his palms over his jeans and gets into the car with his bag on his lap “so where's your place?” I started up the car and looked over to him before settling my hand behind his head on the headrest and looking over my shoulder to back out and exit the school's parking lot “uh it's just down past there. I'll tell you when we get there” i nod and flick on the radio before i can think into the sharp pang in my chest.

“Here it's here.” he points to a quaint looking house, clearly cozy but looked to be empty “parents gone?” I pull into his driveway and park the car. “Yeah, they'll be home in a bit” he gets out of the car and makes his way to the porch before stopping and looking back at me. I smile and wave at him before going to switch the car out of park and into reverse “wait! Wait a second” he waves for me to stop and comes up to the car “turn it off” he motions to the radio and i turn it as well as the car off “something wrong?” he shakes his head “since we're friends and all. You wanna come in?” this time my face heated up, i pulled the keys out of the ignition and shoved them into my pocket before exiting the car and following him up his porch and into his house, “wow. You've got a nice place here man.” he stops awkwardly in front of me and rubs the back of his neck before making his way to the kitchen to grab two of his dad's beers from the fridge “you drink?�� he holds out the can and i take it with a small smile “only on special occasions” the remark forces a flush onto his face and he leads me to a door and down some stairs “this is my room” I nod and look around occasionally thumbing at some of the boosters on his walls and running my fingers over his couch when i pass it “your room is sick man, my parents wont let me hang anything up in mine. I'm lucky they let me have the typewriter I got a while back.” he seems to perk up at the mention of a typewriter if I had half the confidence id call him cute flat out but god knows I don't want to fuck up whatever the fuck is going on right now “you write” I cracked open the beer and held it up to my lips peering at him over the edge before taking a sip “no. not really anymore. Why” he shrugs and bows his head letting his hand come up to rub at his neck I'm starting to think it was a nervous habit instead of a bashful one “I write some. My English teacher thinks I should enroll in a club. Says I've got a talent or something” I not and look at him closer, his shoulders seemed to tense and then relax as he was thinking “you should show me some” he looks up with the same expression I saw in class; his cheeks red eyes wide and eyebrows raised to his hairline “I mean. I might not write some but I do read. A lot” I finish sheepishly and shrug “you seemed to like my typewriter when I mentioned it. So I'll make you a deal.” I slowly stepped a little closer to him, testing his reaction. When he didn't back away I stepped some closer “what.” he stopped to clear his throat “what's the deal?” I grin and nod. “I'll give you two weeks.” I hold two of my fingers up failing to hold back a snicker when he looks at me confused “two weeks. To write the most extravagant thing I have ever read. And if I like it, I'll let you use my typewriter whenever you want.” I set the can down on his desk and wipe the condensation off on my jeans, he brings his hand back up to his neck and shakes his head “I don't think ill be able to write anything that good.” I huff and shake my head “not with that attitude you cant.”

Weird dreams 1 (probably)

Prepare for some chaotic explaining:

Emergency early warning shelters in case of an unspecified were built in many places. I happened to get assigned to one. My responsibility was to answer to the calling it ever came, and engage the alarm when it came, sealing the shelter.

Problem was, I wasnt alone. Some close friends, some family and personal things were placed inside the shelter, but there also were some strange anomalous thing about it.

This didn't look like somewhere you would ever be safe from something. It was a spherical thing, standing on three legs, with stairs at the bottom, a hatch, and rooms inside it sidnt have no noticeable antennas or wires coming in. There were strange things inside too, like a ring that held what could only be described as magic, tools, armore and things with a very old look that all had strange properties... yet the only thing that was in my own personal ownership was the ring.

Wearing it constantly for safety, it started changing me personally right up until the event.

We started arguing for some minor things during the day... bad idea to do so. Everyone was wearing their own selected object, and the shelter shakes for a second.

I do not know if somebody was outside or not. I do not know it'll somebody was lost, but the emergency lights came on, and the call that everyone had dreaded came.

I was in charge of relaying some doomsday type signals... another friend sealed the entrance. And then the alarm came and every window that existed on the spear stopped showing the outside, but instead they showed a black nothingness.

Floating, like in space... we lost gravity for what seemed to be a long time before we were able to get our bearings and use the things withing to be able to regain gravity within the shelter.

But we were worried, we didn't know what to do next, and time inside started to eat away at our curiosities. We started searching the insides of the sphere. We found some food, some supplies, and had some accidental encounter with an energy that spiked the effects of our things...

One lady grew strong, a guy grew agile... and me, I sw the rig shine and suddenly was thrown back, landing as a small sized, young dragon.

Still fully aware, but absolutely disoriented, panic slowed down and rationale started applying. A way "out" was found through the wiring shaft, and I was sent to investigate since I was the size of a kid.

Discovered a great chamber, the ceiling being tall and the inside wide. Like a hangar of sorts.

Inside, something not unlike a gate was being tested, whether by people or by automatons I didnt learn because I fell on top of it and was sent to what I can only describe as a crazy future.

The deep, industrial looking space in which I fell was only broken by moving boxes of an undetermined nature, one of which I grabbed.

Thrown into depths unknown of the facility, saw a way out... but I can't describe what was beyond the space without feeling uncomfortable.

Something about the ridiculousness of capitalist exploitation of beings both animal and human is unexplainable in a way that cant be found in a comically funny way, but the place in which I found myself was apparently a place that created, what I can only guess where "pets" of many forms, who knows how, probably using genetics or something.

All the things within the belt were being tied up with a backpack of sorts, an alarm and a bulky tracking system was my best guess, but probably something like a control system was in it.

Escaping through the side of the belt before I could be seen, I tried to get out, only to be noticed by one aggressive looking manager or overseer of sorts.

Verbally abusing the people inside he got them to start looking, forcing me to bolt the fuck away from there.

The outside was like a busy market. Not unlike those found in our times but also noticeable near in the future.

I ran through the stalls, below the displays and away from the legs of the people walking the chaotic mess, but I couldn't make distance with the pursuiters, not with the bulky backpack.

I cut it out through biting it, and bolted again, feeling the noticeable speed increase and a completely different way of running.

Inside a gallery of sorts I found a group of people that I can only describe as teenagers spontaneously try to help me escape, and help they did, managing to hide me and fool the pursuers while I hid.

And as I waited for things to calm down, I managed to see, like a projection, the person fooling the police-like pursuers of mine get cornered and arrested.

Before I could do anything else though, I suddenly woke up.

I slept far from my planned waking up time, damn.

But damn; wasnt that an interesting dream or what?

I had a really weird dream involving Dr Maddiman. Its a shame i can barely remember any of it and also it seems i woke up before it ended? Like i just had this overwhelming sense that allll the plot threads were gonna be wrapped up any second now and then BOOM awake. So just a whole bunch of random stuff happened with no real explanation at all.

It was some sort of post apocolyptic setting i think? Humanity was in these small isolated cities fighting against some sort of invading army but we never actually saw the aliens themselves. And some part of my brain was like "it makes sense its the same rules as a hairdresser and the design takes cues from a pack of AAA batteries". I have NO idea what that means! So basically everythibg was super vague and undescribed and dream-me just had a sense of already being a long time fan of this series and knowing enough to fill in the gaps. Apparantoy this was some sort of adaptation of a thing id already seen, but id been told the ending was different and more accurate to the manga? Also i wasnt actually a person watching this show i was still the protagonist of the show yet i acted like i'd been reincarnated and relived this week a million times or something

ANYWAY the way dr maddiman comes in is that he was some sort of 'brilliant but dangerous' expert the government had hired to help our fight against the aliens. It wasnt really explained why he was.. yknow.. maddiman. Like is this meant to be that ghosts also exist in this sci fi universe? Was he a half alien hybrid instead of a yokai? Was it just human maddiman with the personality of yokai maddiman due to ptsd...? In any case he didnt seem entirely tethered to the laws of reality and nobody knew exactly how he pulled off all his scientific miracles. He was treated as the only guy who could understand the mindset of the aliens, but that also made him dangerous because he trapped in the delusion of everything being okay and fun and happy and he often did evil things by accident while having good intentions. But they didnt have anyone else who'd cracked the code of the alien weaponry so they had to put up with him. He was just sorta assigned a crack team of secret agents whose job was Be The Old Man's Friend So We Dont All Die. Dont let him realise how the world is all destroyed and such, just play along with his goofyness and try and remind him to do his important work while dancing around why its important. it was super creepy how he was locked up and gaslighted like this!! And he was all 'oh im sure when im done with my ultimate experiment i can go home to my wife and kids' and yeah it was implied here that the same backstory applied :( 'distract the old man and validate his false opinion that his family is still alive and waiting for him' :( poor sci fi madds :(

Oh also for some reason he seemed to be wearing elements of Adventure era Dr Eggman's outfit? But just the general style of the coat and the wearing goggles that he never actually uses. And he had a very warm and cuddly autumnal colourscheme

Anyway i was part of the Super Secret Grampa Cherishing Division whose job was to act as his assistant but also secretly be packing a bazillion weapons to neutralize him if he poses a danger to humanity. But i started to genuinely care for the guy and question the 'any atrocity is permitted for the sake of saving the world' philosophy of my bosses. Also it was just very weird how it was this post apocolypse alien fighting action thing yet i didnt see ANY OF IT cos this story was confined to this one laboratory. It was surreal hearing about all this stuff happening offscreen!

I think Maddiman's main project was some sort of dimensional transport thing using salvaged alien tech? It was just a door in his lab that usually led to a closet but if he got it working itd teleport us straight to the alien base and save the world. And a lot of it wasnt explained but i got this great sense that itd all come together with a great twist ending evebtually but then i woke up before i got that far. Same for the reveal of this maddiman's new sci fi backstory and soooo many other dropped plot threads. Alas!

So anyway: closet. Closet with one of those bead curtain things cos i was thinking about them when i fell asleep. It was supposed to be a teleport but when it malfunctioned it had really scary negative effects warping people's biology and stuff. I remember one of the test subjects was sent in for a five day trip to a specific alternate dimension but then when they came back itd been several years and theyd had to survive in a deadly wasteland and been mutated into a hellbeast. And maddiman had a huge breakdown because he felt like his recklessness and optimism towards this experiment had caused this mistake to happen, and he'd never realized just how awful the consequences could be. He was babbling motor mouth discussing theories for where it went wrong and there was something like 'we'd only tested it for one day trips and assumed that just programming two of them would equal two days but actually with each additional number on the screen it multiplies the days by 3" And there was something about like...the bead curtain was the machine rather than the door itself? Like trying it on a bunch of different doors around the lab to try and find a way to cure this person.

And there was some sort of artificial intelligence computer with the personality of an adorable lil girl, who helped maddiman do calculations and stuff. She missed the mistake in this calculation cos her concept of linear time and the limits of human organs was kinda undeveloped. She only existed within the realm of numbers after all, and didbt even have functionality to record footage of her human friends's faces. No idea wtf a human looks like! So maddiman was lost in his desperate grief of potentially accidebtally killing or at least mentally scarring a person and the government would probably kill them now if they saw they were a super mutant. And he was sobbing and begging this AI to help, his last resort was her maybe being able to see a brainwave that he'd missed. But she was freaking out cos she didnt even fully understand why maddiman was crying let alone what to do to fix it. Eventually she did manage to find a solution theough some simple different logic thing that she had from her perspective as a computer. And that person was saved but still traumatized and maddiman had a moment of realizing just how high stakes everything was and freaking out. He was like 'whats wrong with my head, why didnt i notice that, why was i so reckless, why cant i seem to grasp basic human logic that i need right now" Having a big existential crisis of 'wait how did i even get in this lab, where's my family and why do i seem to have superpowers'. Protagonist mission: hide all the goddamn mirrors to avoid this weird ghostgramp (...aliengramp??) from realizing he's dead (..or an alien??) and losing control of himself. And everyone was running around talking about 'containment procedures' and poor maddiman didnt know that if his panic attack continued he might just straight up be killed for outliving his usefulness. So the protagonist was desperate to help him calm down and it sucked SO MUCH cos they had to lie about his past and weave the web of deception around him again for his own safety. In the end they just hugged him close until he calmed down, and all the other employees were like GASP THEY ACTUALLY TOUCHED THE EVIL DANGEROUS SUPER EVIL MAN and protag was like 'i am 1% away from slapping the next bitch who insults this grandpa'. And it was super depressing cos once he'd calmed down he seemed to start forgetting that anything bad had ever happened?? And he was really panicking and scared cos he didnt understand why he was forgetting, and he knew he had to cling onto something important but he didnt know what. And then five minutes later he was back to haha cheerful nothing is wrong and i love doing my fun science in this room im never allowed to leave. And protagonist was crying the tears that this poor gramp wasnt allowed to cry :(

Also actually i think maybe he was a ghost AND an alien? Like he was a scientist who died in some sort of tragedy back when the aliens first invaded, but along the way he'd been infected so his body got back up as a twisted combination of human and inhuman. And this was something unique to him, like he just happened to have a genetic mutation in his blood that was totally undetectable in life but happened to mix unpredictably with this alien virus to turn him into a hybrid instead of just killing him. So the government was very interested in finding a way to replicate this and create new supersoldiers, as well as just taking advantage of this dude's confused mental state that granted him a unique understanding of alien tech that made him more effective than other scientists. And, of course, also made him easy to manipulate :(

And i also had a feeling that maybe his backstory was mixed up with Adventure dr eggman? Like here it seemed he had a daughter instead of a son, and she had a similar death to Maria Robotnik where she was assasinated by the government he worked for, and it tipped him over the edge. I think Maddiman-alien-scifi-dude originally died trying to save her from being used in some sort of experiment? Like she was already dying of a disease and thats why maddiman took this job to have access to powerful government technology to try and look for a cure. But when the whole alien apocolypse happened, the evil government decided to use her for experiments cos she was 'basically dead anyway'. Theyd just lie and tell maddiman she died of her illness. So this was how they found out that this particular family's bloodline had a mutation that let them form a viable hybrid with alien dna. They were turning this poor kid into a monster in the basement while lying to her dad about her being dead! And maddiman was about to commit suicide from having no reason to live anymore, with the hell of this apocolypse world and the false impression that his kid was already dead. But somehow monster-daughter sensed this or something and broke out of containment to try and save him, and when he saw her he was able to recognise her even in her twisted state. So when the soldiers gunned her down in front of him and fed him some lies about this not being his daughter, he just completely snapped. He tried in vain to fight back and take down as many of them as possible in revenge, but well he was just a simple round dad with no ability to fight a government. So he was unceremoniously executed along with his kid and they shoved the bodies back in the lab to continue testing. "Damn that overemotional science dad, he made us execute our most valable test subject! But at least this way we can analyze his corpse to see if the mutation is passed down on the patrilineal side." But at some point during the fight, monster-daughter's blood had splashed on her dad and gotten into his bloodstream. So the seemingly dead body suddenly got up out of the morgue and started sucking people's blood or something. And this led to the current situation where they have him locked up cos he's a valuable test subject but also hey he has 100% reason to kill all of us and we're screwed if he remembers his past. Also i think the computer AI thing was his subconcious attempt to recreate the personality of his daughter even if he couldnt remember she'd ever existed :(

Anyway at some point things escalated and there was this final showdown versus both the invading aliens and the evil governmebt guys. I think there was some corrupt greedy politician dude who stole maddiman's teleporter tech and sold us out to the aliens cos he wanted money and power or something. And probably predictably the aliens just threw him off a bridge after he gave them the thing, because seriously even this evil army thinks these government dudes are too evil!

So this big actiony event was happening and Maddiman was freaking out like 'no no no i cant leave the lab everyone wpuld be mad at me, i dont even know what its like outside this room' even when he was in the middle of being attacked by aliens. He was forced to face his repressed memories to survive, and he naturally had a massive fuckin freakout! And i think maybe when protagonist character was trying to protect him he accidentally lashed out with his powers and hurt them, and he was so horrified thinking another person he cared about was gonna die because of him. Protagonist was like 'dont worry gramps its just a scratch' but he'd already freaked out and run away into the battlefield to his heavily implied death.

BUT THEN at some sort of moment of dire need, he came back all powered up and re-memoried and was like 'i have every reason to despise humanity but im not gonna let more children die because of these damn corporate monsters (and also literal monsters which are infinately less scary)" And he did some sort of great sacrifice to save the protagonist at the cost of his own life, and it was super dramatic falling from a building into a lake of fire or something. While sobbing and smiling peacefully thinkibg "did i atone for my sins? Will i be able to see my family again?" As his smiling face sunk beneath the flames and the protagonist cried out into the abyss...

Aaaaand then i dont really know what happened in the big battle and i also never found out wtf the solution was to fixing the transporter thing or how the aliens invaded or any of the million plot points that were non gramp related.

I just remember that when we all saved the day and defeated the baddies we found that maddiman had actually survived and it was a big hugs reunion. He was like "OH YEAH i totally forgot i literally already died once and regenerated from it, and this was the entire start to my story. My bad!" *shrugs inexplicably not dead arms*

So yeah in summary im glad my brain summoned up a universe where my favourite sad granddad is literally immortal now, but also why did it torment him with an even sadder plot than his original one

They are completely removing health benefits for one part and retaining for another. I'm 24, and I've been reading a lot of posts online about people who have many health ailments and do not have insurance to get treated or go to the ER then have a massive bill afterwards. I don't understand why these individuals are not hunting around for the cheapest medical insurance they can find prior. There are individual plans out there, directly through the insurance companies, also family plans. You can pick and choose your premiums/deductibles/co-pays, hunt around for what suits your needs best. The single plans especially, can be and most of the time are, affordable. I don't understand why people do not apply for basic health insurance that would cover them in an emergency, or for general routine health-care. La Noche Vieja - New Years Eve in Spain

So like I mentioned before, I am not doing any traveling this winter break, but the cool thing is that I get to experience the holidays here in Spain, which I am honestly glad that I did. I started off the day by just casually waking up and doing my normal daily routine, but I was just in a t-shirt and shorts for most of the afternoon because the other members of the family were not coming over until later in the night. So, I looked homeless and was about ready to go out into the living room to wait for my host family to return for lunch, and then my host sisters came home by themselves and told me that I had two options. I could either stay at home and eat some left-over Paella (always a good choice), or I could go out with them to get some pintxos at the bars for lunch. I felt like I needed to leave the house at least some point during the day, so I quickly put my self together and then we left and ended up meeting my host parents too. The thing with Europe as compared to the US (excluding New York) is that there are so many people in the streets, ESPECIALLY today during New Years Eve. I had some pintxos, a tortilla buena (omlette with Tuna), calamari, and some beers with my host parents and sisters. After that we went back and all took a siesta, as the night was going to be a long one.

Once I woke up from my siesta (around like 7:30 or so), I kind of passed the time in my room and what not, and then started to decide what I was going to wear. My host sisters again invited me to go out with them to meet some other family members at a bar, so I again ventured out into the crowded streets of Las Arenas, and I started to feel slightly uncomfortable..only because I was definitely on fashion-weekly’s worst dressed list for the occasion. Almost everyone was wearing dresses and suites and ties, except for some of the delinquent teenagers (side-note Europe’s teenagers are absolutely loud and crazy and I do not know why Americans get a bad rep for being loud and obnoxious). I had a beer and talked with some of the members of my host family, while the kids in the streets started the firework shinanigans. For some reason the most popular choice of firework here in Spain are the ones that absolutely make zero color and just have an extremely loud BOOM...which are my least favorite ones lol. Soon after we headed back to the house to start the family festivities.

Once we got back, some of the other family members were arriving, and the more I looked around, the more homeless I felt because even the little boys were wearing suites and ties. I wasn’t a complete disaster, I just looked like I was ready to go out to the clubs in Vegas or something instead of a semi-formal occasion. I couldn’t take the pressure anymore because I AM NEVER the worst dressed at an event, so I went into my room and changed into a dress shirt and bow tie. I came back out and my host mom and sisters were talking in front of the entrance to the living room and were the first ones to see me and all three of the stopped talking about whatever they were talking about to compliment me on how I looked, followed by my host mom bringing me into the living room to showcase me. Everyone was clapping and cheering for me and it made me so happy!

**A struggle for a lot of students here in Spain, or perhaps in any other country abroad, sometimes it’s very hard to feel accepted by the home culture. There were definitely a few students (not gonna name any names) this semester who, instead of trying to work past this feeling, chose to be negative-nancy’s throughout a lot of the semester instead. They were kind of starting to drag other students, including myself, into their bubble of negativity as well. I remember talking to one of the other students who also got sucked into this trap, and her perception about the culture just seemed like she was completely over it and didn’t want to be here anymore. Thank god I didn’t fall into this mindset, mainly because after hearing her talk about how she didn’t feel accepted here, made me realize that I cannot fall into the same mindset and try to stay as positive as possible the entire time that I am here. And to be honest, if you’re going to just be an asshole the entire time here (which this girl was not an asshole, she was a victim!), then I honestly don’t really know what else to tell other exchange students who have negative opinions about the Spanish culture, other than that it sounds like they wasted their money, and that they should have either studied abroad somewhere else, or should have stayed home. As stated in my previous post, I obviously understand that it can be hard sometimes for sure, and not everyone also is as lucky as I am and gets assigned very good host parents either; but at the same time, I came here for a reason and I know what I came here for and I choose to stick to that foundation so I can enjoy my time here. I’m not really sure if some other students really know what they actually study abroad for, which is why I highly recommend researching and carefully choosing where you are going BEFORE you do it, to avoid any discrepancies. I think that it’s also somewhat intolerant (contrary to what these students might think of themselves as) to go off and put another culture on blast the entire time, when you are supposed to be learning from it. You are not in Kansas anymore Dorothy and Toto, and you can’t just click ya little red heels and go home.... do your best and try to enjoy your time here. I hope no one takes offense to this if you are reading it, if you happen to identify with this group of students. I still respect every student in our program, because there are so many cool, unique, and intelligent students that came here, and I don’t think I can say that I dislike anyone. It’s only an honest thought. **

ANYWAY end rant lol, so sorry once I started throwing in a little pinch of salt into this post, I realized that I needed to pour out the whole damn salt shaker. The point was that at this moment where my family and all of the other family members started clapping for me and cheering, it was that milestone of acceptance for me, and I finally felt like that I have fully embraced the Spanish culture and that they have taken me in with open arms. This definitely set the tone for the rest of the night, as I enjoyed many pitxos, wine, beer and cocktails, until it was time to do the tradition of eating 12 grapes, which I will post a video on here with a description about that. All of us got ready as we watched the Puerta del Sol on TV live from Madrid, and then the next thing you know I’m shoving 12 grapes down my throat on one leg until BAM ITS 2017! Everyone went around and hugged each other, people in the streets were lighting off tons of fire works and what not. Throughout the night there were a bunch of degenerates who kept throwing fireworks under cars and setting off their alarms lol. Eventually the big pretty fireworks ceased and then....OH THEN..the party had only JUST begun.

I had a few more drinks before my host sisters’ cousin Yago invited me to go out and hang out with some of his friends for the night. My host sister, Josefina, went to meet up with some of her friends, while the other, Ana, went to bed because she has some tests that she has to study for (crazy ones like genetics and vet-stuff) , so she wanted to get up early to do that. I went out with Yago to the bars and met 4 of his friends, and we just passed the time sort-of bar hopping a little (not really staying longer than 30 seconds at a particular one) before returning to the streets to drink a little more and socialize. I ended up going with Yago’s 4 freinds to check out Algorta, a nearby neighborhood, where we only spent about less than an hour there. His friends retired to go to sleep, which they just kind of seemed like they were over it anyway, while I returned to Las Arenas to look for Yago, or Josefina, at the bars. I couldn’t find them so I returned back to my apartment for a little to just sit down for a little. It was 5:30am when I got back and my host parents were STILL awake having fun with some of the other adults. I sat down while my host mom’s sister Victoria made me a gin and tonic, which eventually kept my spontaneous mood up and then at about 6am I ventured back outside to try and find Yago or Josefina. I didn’t have any luck as there was a lot of people in the streets, so I went back at about 6:45 (Josefina had returned about 5 minutes before me), talked with the adults who WERE STILL awake, before I went to bed at around 7am..while my host parents continued to stay away until 10am lol...they are the real champions of the night!!

Overall it was an awesome night. I definitely made sure to try and thank Yago for inviting me the next time I saw him...I said try because I did run into him after I had just got done going on a run yesterday and I was out of breath, which out of breath, exhausted, and trying to speak Spanish does not mix well lol. For a lot of people, 2016 was a terrible year, and I definitely understand for some, but it was the complete opposite for me! I had just gotten done with my worst semester ever in the history of me being a student in the Fall of 2015, and I was in a weird sort of depressing funk as well since the beginning of summer, and decided to leave all behind in 2015 (my trip back home for the holidays was definitely a cure for that). In 2016 got back on track and had a great Spring semester in 2016, was feeling really happy almost all of the time, and 2016 was also the year that I came to Spain. I honestly cant really complain about it from my end of things, and I definitely have a lot to be thankful from it. Now that it’s 2017, I am not going to lie, I kind of feel like I am on top of the world right now. I don’t really know what it is, but hopefully it sticks around. I feel like that it is a good sign that great things are about to come my way. 2015 tried to kill me, 2016 saved me, and I hope that 2017 is my year to shine.
