being american is sucks as hell. it genuinely pains me to think about the customs and language i could have grown up with if my family had stayed in ireland or scotland or norway however many generations ago. and it really bothers me to consider what the evolution was like for my family from whatever they were before to what they are now. like were they always this bad, or is it partly the result of growing up in a conservative american environment?

#and the norwegian side only got here like... 2 or 3 generations ago? it was my great grandparents who moved here in adulthood i think #but by the time i was born nobody knew the language or how to make more than a couple dishes or anything. it makes me really sad #but im almost sadder about the irish/scottish side of my family esp when i read about the way the languages are dying out #and the cultural suppression and all that #its just very depressing #i wish i could have had some connection to these cultures but i just dont because nobody inherited any of that knowledge #obviously american culture like... IS a thing and there is regional variation but idk it doesnt feel. defineable?#hard to put into words but im sure someone knows what i mean
