from what i understand, if you're playing as astarion, he very much remembers the kidnappings, and has narration describing his memories of the event when he meets gandrel. and also, if you talk to gandrel peacefully without astarion in the party, gandrel mentions the missing children, and then... you still have no option to really ask astarion about it. it is a very "the writers were all white and didn't think this through" type of moment, imo.

he also gets super sad about sebastian when you find him, but his response to the imprisoned gur children is to make a shitty joke like "well, at least i just jumped them in an alley and kidnapped them!! i wasn't luring them with candy or anything :)" which comes off to me like he is quite deeply racist.

i think in early access astarion had a more overtly racist tone to his character, in that his whole thing was that he was human trafficking gur people to cazador as a severely corrupt magistrate, the gur beat him to death as revenge, and then cazador turned him. which is interesting, but i am glad they didn't go with that for final release... having the discourse of "excuse me, that is my poor meow meow's emotional support racism, he did that because he was sad 🥺" would have killed me irl. particularly with the way that the gur are clearly paralleled with romani people, and astarion is notably the palest elf with the poshest accent...

anyway i don't mean to harsh your fic writing vibes or anything! it's just my unsolicited ted talk. i do like astarion, but i feel like people skim over this aspect of his writing because it's very un-sexy and not charming at all, just banally evil.

Yeah I agree, even if the writing is good for the most part, it's deeply inconsistent in others. It really is a question of "Did you overlook this? Or did you decide not to look into it at all because it would say something about your fave that you didn't want to be said?"

In terms of Avatar Astarion vs Companion Astarion, I think they're also slightly different characters just because of the player being a new factor introduced in the story. Like, Player!Astarion could happily rescue the grove and the Nightsong and be a hero and that'd be canonically what Player!Astarion does, while Companion!Astarion would hate that shit.

So Companion!Astarion being aware of the Gur kids would make him deeply unlikable, so it makes sense that he doesn't, so the player doesn't despise his ass instantly. Him suspecting Gandrel was sent by Cazador also gives the player a decent enough reason to agree to killing Gandrel. However, Player!Astarion needs to have this background information in order to make a more informed decision and understand the character they're playing as. Having the context of who Gandrel is and why he's actually there helps the player decide their next course of action, be it sparing Gandrel because he's a good guy, or killing him to protect themselves.

Obviously this might just be a major cope on my part, but that's how I see it, at least. Honestly, I do wish Larian left kids alone in general. It seems they include them mostly for shock value and to raise the stakes for the player. Like they thought maybe too many players would willingly sacrifice 7000 adults for Astarion, so better put some kids in there to make sure they know it's the bad choice. How does it tie back to Astarion? Um. He kidnapped them. And they also specifically belong to a group of people he's racist against. Because that means ... Something?

Thinking that you’ve offended him, the worst being: infuriated the man with your act, hands retract to your chest, studying him for a reaction as much as he studies you.

“There’s no need for that.” He’ll say in a monotone, as soon as you do so, and he hopes that he said something else. Anything else that could keep you touching him, anything that wouldn’t give the impression that he���s even slightly repulsed with your offer. But he doesn’t know what else to say, to comfort or to do, as the only thing that is in his mind when you’ve declared your offer is: this is a ploy, a game that makes him want to lower his walls so you can attempt to escape again.

Escape to that brutal world, unsafe and ready for the taking, a breath away from corruption then death; had he not come for you sooner, saved and taken to this haven, then it would really have happened. His love would surely meet their demise, while he burns at the embers of his regret at the promise left in shambles.

So no. He wouldn’t make the same mistake, this change in your actions is welcomed, tempting, but he fastens his resolve and relent until the time is right. Joker

🤡Joker will feel conflicted about this for more than just one reason. Normally he wouldn’t have too much troubles with kidnapping you since he has done worse than this. But the thing that makes him hesitate in here is the fact that a child is involved. Children and Joker are a very sensitive topic since he kidnaps them and is also indirectly responsible for getting them killed. He doesn’t care all that much about your fiancé, but the child will keep him on a distance for quite some time. There are a lot of worries regarding the child. The other members of the circus will have to comfort him and help him with his conflicted emotions.

🤡But eventually Joker will decide to jump into action. He would still take the fact that you’re pregnant into consideration and depending on how far you’re already into it he’ll either wait until you’ve delivered or get rid of your fiancé beforehand. He’ll try to set up rumors about your fiancé to make you suspicious of him already a bit before he eliminates him. It would also depend on how long the circus is still staying in your place even though Joker did make sure that they stayed longer than planned because of you. He’s highly manipulative and would instantly be there for you the moment you get to know that your partner is there, comforting you and acting as your shoulder to cry on. He might just try to convince you to join him and his people willingly since the life of a single mother with a baby isn’t easy at all. If you refuse he’ll most likely blackmail you, threatening you to hurt your loved ones.

🤡The child will be kept away under all means necessary from Baron Kelvin, Joker and the group having mutually agreed on this. All of them were at the beginning a bit insecure since taking care of a small child is new to them after only kidnapping them. But in a way also soothingly to know that they can at least give one child a happy life, being protected and cherished by them. Joker wouldn’t have hated or disliked the child if it would have gotten some traits from their father, but he surely doesn’t mind that they are a miniature version of you, from the looks to the way they’re acting. Joker would try to be a good father, kind of feeling like he has too after messing up so many other lifes, but be still aware that he’ll also use that child as a way to make you stay, manipulating them into seeing them as their dad and not wanting to leave him.

Lau

🚢Lau wouldn’t mind it that much that you’re pregnant, but he does mind the fact that you’re engaged. You will never know how much he really dislikes your fiancé since he always gives you two this mysterious smile of his. He isn’t hesitant like Joker is, but takes his time for another reason. Lau wants to separate you from that guy beforehand and then finish him off. He might have sadistic and violent tendencies towards others, but when it comes to you he’s surprisingly thoughtful.

🚢With Ran Mao’s help he’ll ruin the reputation of that guy without anyone ever finding out. And after you’ve officially asked for a break off of the engagement Lau would be there to cover you up financially since you yourself are still carrying the child. During the pregnancy he would always be there for you and make sure that you’re in good hands. The death of your now ex fiancé might come later than expected, after the child is born. But this will most likely come from the fact that Lau played a bit with that man before finishing him off. Keep in mind that if that guy continuously tries to get in contact with you Lau will order Ran Mao to finish him off.

🚢There’s a good chance that you’ll never find out what really happened since Lau made sure to cover everything carefully up. It would be interesting to see him interacting with your child since he would be clueless about quite a few things, but would act like he knows about them. I feel like Ran Mao would make a great aunt in here and will be fiercely overprotective over the child. I don’t think he would have had anything against the child if they had some physical traits or the behavior of their father, but would be fairly amused by the fact that they are a little clone from you. He would be on the spoiling parent side.

Ran Mao

🌺Despite the fact that Ran Mao can’t stand the thought of you with someone else, she’ll hesitate a bit. Because as much as she might hate that guy, your happiness is something that isn’t easy for her to ignore. Not only that, but knowing that you’re awaiting awakes her mother instincts. During the whole pregnancy thing she would always keep a sharp eye on you and get rid of everyone she sees as a threat to you or the child.

🌺Ran Mao will try beforehand to spread some mistrust in your fiancé. When she’s sure that you’re in safe hands she follows him and if he should do even the slightest thing wrong the next morning everyone will know. But as long as you’re pregnant her main worry is you and not your partner, meaning that she’ll wait until you gave birth. During the whole pregnancy she’s there to support you and if you should have cravings she’ll instantly disappear to get you what you desire.

🌺I feel like Ran Mao would be a great mother. She isn’t the most verbal one, but she’ll make the child feel loved. I don’t think she cares whether the child looks like you or your former partner. It’s yours and that’s all that matters for her. But if your child is the spitting image of you? She can’t say that she adores the little sweetheart just as much as you. People should watch themself when they make the child cry because then they’ll have to deal later on with an enraged mom.

Prince Soma

🍛For Soma this is a problem. He’s a delusional Yandere and believes that you and him love each other. The boy would throw a tantrum when finding out that you’re engaged and pregnant and would almost desperately try to find an excuse to why this isn’t real. Soma would never blame you for anything. Instead he would give the other guy the fault. You didn’t became his fiancée because you wanted too. You were probably just bored because he didn’t appear sooner and now you feel bad for leaving since you are awaiting a child.

🍛Soma is not into killing which is, despite his delusions, a good thing. He’ll rely more on his status and on Agni’s help. Agni advices him to wait until the baby is born so you aren’t into too much stress and pain. Soma will just insert himself into your life as if he was always there. It’s of course nice to have someone who spoils you rotten during the coming months, but the problem is that Soma starts throwing a tantrum whenever he sees your fiancé. It’s that guy’s fault that you aren’t with him yet.

🍛See it like this, at least your former partner will be able to live. You’ll just never see him again, Soma ensuring that. Don’t worry about the child, they are in best hands since Soma started viewing them even before they were born as his child. And if they look and act just like you? They just gave him more reasons to spoil them beyond rotten.

Agni

🤜Okay, so I don’t think Agni would even dare to try something if he knows that you’re happily engaged and pregnant. Instead he would choose to suffer alone and let you live happily. The only possibilities where he would interfere is when he finds out that you aren’t happy with that guy, he doesn’t treat you right or when he possesses some sort of threat to you.

🤜Agni used to be a criminal, but changed after Soma took him in. He only kills when all other options failed. But if he can avoid it then he’ll do it. He would rely more on intimidating the guy and scaring him away whilst also making sure that he doesn’t endanger your or the baby’s health.

🤜Even if that man treated you bad, a part of Agni will feel always a bit bad for what he’s done. The only thing he can do to make up for it is taking good care of you and your child. Agni would have been the one who would have been the most okay with the child looking like their father, knowing that this would have been only natural. But he can’t deny that he thinks it’s really endearing that the kid not only looks, but also acts like you.

Eren Yeager

👊The problem with Eren are his delusional mood swings he has when it comes to you. In one moment he might just be pissed off that someone took you before him, but would at least be aware that you’re happy. But if he gets in his delusional mood the whole thing becomes twisted because then Eren tends to think that you and him are meant to be together, making him mad at the other guy.

👊It happens most likely when he’s in his delusional mood. Because then he just wants to get rid of this guy and take his place. That’s how it should have been from the start. He’ll most likely kill that guy when you’re still carrying because I feel like Eren would enjoy being there for you whilst you’re pregnant. He sees it as a way to build a more intimate bond with you and to gain your trust faster because you’re to some degree dependent on him. That of course would all be not necessary if that guy is part of the survey corps because then dying is a very normal possibility so Eren might not even have to do anything except playing a bit on that guy’s gear.

👊I feel like the fact that the child is a miniature version of you would make Eren really overprotective and give him an easier time to forget about your now dead partner. Eren sees it as his duty to take good care of your child, it should have been his job from the very beginning. He tends to show off to you how great care he can take of the child to make you forget about your old partner for sure.

Erwin Smith

🎖Erwin would be somewhat of an similar cast to Agni. If he knows that you’re pregnant and engaged he would hesitate a bit since he is an aware one. He would have a much more easier time when he knows that you aren’t happy or that guy doesn’t take good care of you. He’s also a possessive one and that would put him in a bit of a tricky situation. I think it would be already enough for him to do something if something about that guy irks him.

🎖Erwin takes your condition in consideration and is more of a blackmailer and briber than killer so he would try to rely more on this, making you question your fiancé’s loyalty and love by spreading rumors about him and ruining that guy’s reputation. If your fiancé is part of the survey corps then here again, him dying wouldn’t be that unusual. I still think that Erwin will be okay with just destroying that guy’s life, but if he happens to die then Erwin will use that chance usefully.

🎖Erwin’s dream would be marrying you which will happen sooner or later because that guy has absolute husband material. Just as much As he has dad material. Erwin is another one who would have accepted it if the child inherited something of their father. But he would find his liking in this because people who don’t know who you are tend to mistake him for their biological father which makes Erwin feel proud.

Levi Ackerman

⚔️Good luck with this man here. Levi is a terrible case of possessive and has this thing with thinking that he’s better than any man you could possibly have. And the baddest thing about this all is that a child is involved. A child is really marking, more so than marrying, causing Levi to see red. Your partner has to get away. Because as surprisingly as it may sound, Levi wants to be in his place to function as the loving husband as well as father. Everything to have you.

⚔️It would be so easy for him to get rid of that guy if he’s part of the survey corps. All Levi would have to do is manipulate his gear and then watch that guy getting killed and pretending later on that he didn’t make it in time. If your fiancé isn’t part of the survey corps then manipulation and rumors are the way to separate you from him. In this case he might be similar to Eren, meaning he would like to strengthen your trust in him whilst being there for you during your pregnancy.

⚔️Levi didn’t have a very pretty childhood, but he would try his damn hardest with the child. It would be easier for him to bond with the child if they look and act just like you. Don’t take it the wrong way, but Levi would like that you forget everything about your stupid old partner and if the kid would have looked like him that would have been just a constant reminder for you as well as him.

Bertholdt Hoover

🧡For Bertholdt this situation might be a bit conflicting because if you are happy and he feels like your fiancé treats you the right way he wouldn’t have much to complain about. On the other hand he would only need to find one thing about your fiancé where he feels like that he isn’t good enough to take properly care of you. Bertholdt has high expectations on people who you love, tending to judge whether they’re worthy of your love and treat you right or not. Especially if your fiancé really doesn’t seem to take good care of you it would give Bertholdt sleepless nights.

🧡Bertholdt isn’t in a position of power like Levi or Erwin are and also isn’t that violent like Eren is, but if he feels like that guy doesn’t treat you good enough and even has the feeling that he might even be able to treat you better he will do something. The easiest scenario for everyone in Attack on Titan would be if your partner is part of the survey corps because in that case dying is a sadly daily thing. And as much as Bertholdt is timid, if he knows he’s responsible for your fiancé’s death and your sadness he feels like he has to approach you and be there for you.

🧡I can’t help, but find the image of Bertholdt with a small child unbelievably cute. Because Bertholdt would be absolutely enamored with that child of yours, doesn’t matter if it inherited yours or their father’s behavior and/or look.

Reiner Braun

🟤Reiner is a respectful Yandere and would feel ashamed if falling for a darling who is pregnant and engaged. But he would still be pretty ruthless about this for the simple reason that he has mental issues and a split personality. But he would also be respectful enough to try to go with a more harmless way since he acknowledges the hard work your fiancé has been doing for you.

🟤If everything goes well then your fiancé might be able to continue living since Reiner understands that what he’s doing is wrong. He would use blackmailing and would probably terrorize your partner to scare him away. If your fiancé acts however up and starts proposing a threat to him then be aware that Reiner might have a personality switch and is willing to get rid of someone he views as danger. He also feels like the type to manipulate your relationship, letting your partner miss important dates and giving him huge troubles which will affect your trust in him. Remember that if your partner is part of the survey corps that guy might die without him having to do anything.

🟤Reiner could be a very good father if he doesn’t has his personality switch and since I’m into soft Yandere we’re going to assume that you live later on happily with him together, him being able to charm you a normal way and replacing your either dead or still alive, but terrified former partner. For Reiner’s mental health it might be a blessing that the child looks like you because he feels very guilty for what he’s done. So if the child doesn’t remind him of your former partner, but you it would be in a sense very soothing for him.
