Hey, so we all know the Steddie plotline where they date and then have conflict/possibly even break up because Eddie's convinced that he's not what Steve really wants, right? Steve is really vocal about his dream of a big, loving family and a happily ever after, and Eddie is painfully aware that they're Two Dudes in a Homosexual Relationship and that's not really conducive to the stereotypical white-picket-fence American Dream™. This is definitely not Eddie trying to find a Logical Reason to justify his intrinsic fear that he's unlovable/too much for Steve and Steve is going to leave him as soon as he realizes that.

So imagine Eddie starts pulling away from Steve, as a preemptive measure for the breakup he believes is inevitable, and when Steve confronts him about it they have this big messy argument that turns into a breakup (very much a "Eddie manifesting his own worst fear" type of thing). They go their separate ways and lose contact for a prolonged period.
