Derailed Chapter 11

A/N Sorry this is taking forever. The you know makes it hard for me to write. This one should be a lot longer, and it's a lot of explanation. Like wtf is up. I also had to start a new job that is 40   hrs without anyway to write a single thing. Also side note Y/M/N is your mom's name. Life also got complicated since I started so yeah.

"It's a coven." Freya stated

"The long shot was looking for a coven?" You asked slightly confused, while managing to forget that you hadn't told anyone else that Freya was attempting a Hail Mary.

"It was the only available solution. The good news is that they seem to collect in one town." She responded

"Which coven?" Asked Elijah.

"Zavala. They seem to be located about 200 miles from here. They apparently siphon their power from the magic lines that marry into the coven." Freya said.

"So what would they want with me? I have nothing magical about me." You tried to think through the problem

"I say we go and ask them." Dean said

"Sam and I will go in the morning." Klaus commanded

"Great. I am coming with you." You replied

"No." Came from all the men simultaneously.

"If I am or the children I am carrying are what they want, they can't kill me." You stated

"Or you could just be handing them exactly what they want." Klaus replied

"That's why I am not going alone, unless you think between you and Sam you can't defend one measly hunter." You said

"You should understand that witches do have their tricks." Klaus responded

"Hey." Freya started to protest.

"Anyone with brains can see they either underestimated us or didn't think we knew someone powerful enough to track them. Their tricks really are nothing compared to Freya’s." You replied.

"You think I am the brainless one here. I am not.." Klaus started.

"Enough." Elijah commanded.

The room fell silent. "Look, this is getting us no where. Dean, Y/N, and I will head to the town tomorrow. We will politely ask what they want. We are the three people they are lest likely to kill. Plus if they kill one or more of us, they most likely lose whatever they wanted." Elijah reasoned.

The logic was hard to argue with. The room seemed to be hit simultaneously with the sleepiness that everyone had spent the last few weeks earning. A non verbal agreement set in, everyone was going to go to bed. "I hate to admit it, but I think Dean and I might need a guide to our different rooms." You said reluctantly.

"I have got you, love. I believe that Sam has a better sense of direction than his brother." Klaus said

"Sam you can call me if you get lost. I will send my guide to rescue you!" You said exiting.

You stared at Klaus's back as you let your mind wander to tomorrow. It was going to be an awkward car ride. You were so out of it you almost missed when Klaus spoke to you. "You use to never get lost here." He stated

"Yes, but I also use to live here." You replied with no desire to continue the conversation.

"So what is your plan about the kids?" Klaus asked

"I am not sure. I still need more information." You replied

"Hope was a surprise I didn't accept at first. Hayley being pregnant made no sense. I almost missed out on that source of joy. I just want you to know that." Klaus said.

"Yeah but your history with Hayley was a lot less complicated. Plus she didn't have to split locations for her child." You replied

"Sure but her life got a lot more complicated. She made a lot of sacrifices to protect Hope. You might have an easier time." Klaus said

"If you are implying that I don't have a heart, I wish that I didn't because leaving when asked wouldn't hurt. If you are saying I don't love your brother, you are also mistaken. The only think you could be right about is maybe your brother not loving me." You bit back

"If you are blind enough to believe my brother ever stopped loving you, you have not been paying attention. Which makes sense because two men have been falling over themselves and you hardly noticed." He said

You knew exactly who he was talking about and you had to stop this conversation. "Thank you for the compliment but you and Sam really aren't my type." You joked

Klaus glared at you. You glared back. "I believe we have arrived at where you are staying." Klaus said dryly.

"Thank you and goodnight." You said doing your best not to slam the door in his face.

The following morning, you just grabbed your duffel bag and headed straight to the kitchen. Hopefully Dean would be down there and ready to go. You really just wanted to get out of here.  The upcoming car ride wasn't going to be pleasant but at lest everyone had the same goal in mind. Hopefully the silence would stay between the three of you.

Dean was waiting with Elijah. The three of you seemed to be like minded and laser focused. Without much talking the three of you packed the impala. The only pause came when the three of you were to get in the car. Dean was obviously driving and someone should take shotgun. You took the backseat you had spent your first year with the Winchesters riding in.

The car ride was silent even with a stop for gas. The air was thick with unease. About ten miles away from the city, Dean announced his intention to get more gas just in-case. Everyone knew the amount of gas on the car would make no difference in the scheme of things, but having this as a last ditch backup plan was comforting a bit.

You decided to go pee. On your walk back to the car a man seemed to stare you down. It freaked you out and you almost ran to the car. "Are you Y/M/N's daughter?" He asked

Your blood ran a bit cold. Very few people knew her name. Your feet were about to turn into a run, but Elijah and Dean flanked you very suddenly. "Yes. I was actually on my way to this town to do some research on my family history." You replied, hoping you would get away.

"Well I should be a lot of help considering we were married for a few years and had a daughter named Clarissa." He replied

Your heart stopped. That had been your oldest sister's name. He was lying you thought. Your mother had never told you any of this. Before you could process, Dean spoke up. "Any help you provide would be great. She dragged me and this guy along. None of us are great with history or directions. Could we follow you to a cafe?"

"Please she is practically family, you all can come to my home." He replied with his eyes drinking you in.

Before you could politely reject, Elijah stared him in the eye and said "You are going to invite me in as soon as we arrive."

You saw the strange man nod, and realized that Elijah had done a small test and intended to compel the answers out of him. In this moment you really wished the Elijah had been on more hunts with you.

The strange man did indeed invite Elijah in, once the three of you arrived. Hope kinda surged in you. Dean was about to set up and ask some questions. You stopped him with one touch and a look. Elijah had a plan and you knew you could trust Elijah.

Elijah was about to compel the man again, but he offered answers freely. "My name is Walter. I am going to go get my photo book. Your mother was a beautiful bride. You might actually put her to shame." He said walking to grab a book.

The three of you still stood. "Please sit. Would you like something to drink?" Walter asked in a way that made you want to trust him.

Your gut instinct told you not to. So you took the seat next to Walter. "No thanks. My mother never mentioned her marriage to you. Do you know why?" You asked

"Oh because she ran away from the coven. We were in love, but your father came along. I am sure I would still recognize my Clarissa. We were set to be the power couple coven leader with the most powerful children. Yet your mother fell for someone else. Did you know it broke your grandparent's hearts?" He chirped away.

"No I did not." You stuttered a bit shocked at how candid he was being.

"Why are you really here?" Walter asked

You prepared the lie, but instead the truth surged out. "I am pregnant with twins and really shouldn't be. Elijah's sister located that this coven stated it."

Dean and Elijah stared at you with a mix of disbelief and anger. You sent apologies back. "Oh boys don't be mad at her. As the coven leader I have an honesty spell on the house. No one can lie inside my house, not even me. Twins are extremely rare and so interesting. So the reason our coven is at fault, is the fact it is your coven. The Zavala coven was struck with a curse that almost chopped us down.

You see the coven use to gain power through marriages. Then a petty more powerful coven foresaw our great power, and lay a very powerful curse upon us. Every other generation would be without magic, and we could only gain power from a line by having two children of that line being born into the Zavala coven.

The part that almost did us in was the fact that they made it impossible for any members of the coven to have children unless they met some requirements. One was mutual love for each other. The other was you had to be past the age of 26."

That hit you like a ton of bricks. The twins you carried proved that they both loved you. You were still processing that when Walter spoke again.

"We fought it by making conceptions guaranteed, no matter what they were or what should stand in the way of having kids. Unless of course, the coven member or members get a magical block put up with consent from the coven member. So boys what were your last names?"

You watched as they both tried and lost the fight to lie. "I herd of your mother, Elijah. Her line seems to be strong. I approve of him. You know his vampire status will not hinder you having a third child. You should have another child with him. If you do that, we will welcome you and your family back. We need more people in the town, and we can keep you protected." Walter said

Your blood went cold. "I am not having children just to please people." You responded

"Oh well. Hopefully Elijah wins you back. Now do you want some tea while I fill you in on my marriage to your mother?" Walter asked with a sick smile.

You wanted to run. "We are going to go." Dean said

"Well you kids remember, we want her and her kids back." He said with the worst smile.

You almost ran out of the house. Your feet flew to the car and you hopped in back. Dean and Elijah were on your heels. You decided to look back as you pulled away. Walter was standing there waving with his horrible smile.

"So I can see why your mom left." Dean tried to joke.

"Well I can see why she never talked about him." You replied

The three of you traveled once again in silence. You stopped at a diner. The three of you selected a table. Your waitress was a pleasant lady who vaguely reminded you of Kathy. Your heart longed for the town you had called an almost home. "What can I get y'all?" She asked

"I will have a burger, Diana." Dean said

"I would prefer a salad, dear." Elijah said

"I want the greatest burger ever and a side of fruit instead of fries, Diana." You said

Diana gave you a weird look. You rubbed your belly and responded "These kids have been giving me the weirdest cravings."

She nodded like she knew that exact feeling. Now Dean and Elijah were giving you weird looks. "Trust me the cravings are very weird." You replied

Dean decided to barrel through. "So the Zavala coven gets their power from breeding their line."

"So basically, don't have another kid with either of you and we should be fine. They can’t gain more power from us." You replied

"You might want to talk to Freya about the birth control options you have." Elijah stated

"Will do. So now we need to get into the meat of this. What are going to do about them?" You asked

"I don't want to force you into anything you don't want." Dean answered

"Look Dean, we need to face some facts. One I never thought about kids before this. My focus has been on survival. The two of you both brought the topic up once, you need to tell me what you want. I am not against being the equivalent of a surrogate for you two. I just need information before I decide anything." You snapped

Dean was a taken a bit back. "If you decide to surrogate, and Dean is not inclined to be a father, I will take both of them. As far as I'm concerned they both are Mikealsons." Elijah volunteered

"Same." Dean mumbled after the shock wore off.

Before you could start the next leg of the conversation, Diana came back. The town washed over you again and you remembered the promise you made what felt like lifetime ago. You grabbed your stomach again. "I  know what I want. But man this isn't going to be easy."

You arrived at the compound a few hours later.  You walked in with the two men and your duffel bag. The moment the three of your crossed the threshold, you felt more than herd a barrier spell go up. Before you could react to that a figured walked into view. You couldn't believe your own eyes. "Mom?" You asked in a very broken voice.

SUMMARY Andrew Norris is the new music teacher at a troubled inner city school. As he arrives on his first day, he meets fellow teacher Terry Corrigan, who is carrying a gun. When Andrew asks about the firearm, Terry assures him he will learn why the protection is necessary. When they enter the school, Andrew is shocked to see everyone scanned by metal detectors and frisked. He spots a student with a knife, but the security guards let the kid go because they are so overworked.

The halls of the school are covered with graffiti. Andrew learns he is expected to patrol the halls as a security guard during his off periods. In his first class, a group of five disruptive students are roughhousing and causing trouble. The leader of the gang is Peter Stegman, the only member of the group who is actually registered in that class. They all eventually walk out, and Andrew discovers the rest of the students actually want to learn, especially Arthur, who plays the trumpet, and Deneen, who plays the clarinet.

As Andrew gets to know the school and the area, he decides that he wants to put together an orchestra with his more advanced students. Peter’s gang sells drugs, run a strip club, and cause all kinds of mayhem. They follow Andrew home and taunt him one night.

At school, Andrew is confronted with more and more evidence of Peter’s crimes. The two grow increasingly at odds. Eventually, after Stegman killed Terry’s animals in his lab, Andrew and Stegman wind up in a bathroom alone together. Peter throws himself into a mirror and beats himself, claiming that Andrew attacked him. Trying to clear things up, Andrew visits Peter’s mother at home. Frustrated when Peter still plays the victim and his mother will not hear Andrew out, he hotwires Peter’s car and drives it into a wall. During lunch, Stegman’s gang start a “food fight” and force their friend Vinnie to stab Arthur, which he does so and causes him to be sent to a hospital. Vinnie is arrested and held in a youth detention center. Terry is driven insane after the incident with the animals in his lab and is killed after crashing his car when trying to kill Stegman and the others.

Andrew’s orchestra is about to give its first concert. As his wife Diane gets ready at home, Peter’s gang breaks into the house and gang rapes her. One of them takes a Polaroid of her being raped and has it delivered to Andrew on the podium, just as he is about to start the concert. Horrified by the photo, he runs off the podium in pursuit of Peter’s gang. Andrew and the gang chase each other through the school. Andrew kills them off one by one, and finally confronts Peter on the roof. Their last scuffle ends with Peter falling through a skylight and getting tangled to his death in the ropes above the stage. His corpse falls into full view of the audience as his neck is broken by one of the ropes. Andrew is never charged because the police could not find a witness to the crime.

Interview with Director Mark L. Lester

What was the initial inspiration for Class of 1984? Mark L. Lester: I was visiting my old high school, and I noticed there were gangs walking around with no shirts, really tough kids, and the whole school had changed. Then I started to do some investigating, and found that there were some schools, just a couple, that were starting with security and checking for guns. I thought, “Boy, that’d be a good idea for a movie,” and started researching violence in high schools. Over about a year, I came up with the story.

I read that the dialogue the detective (Al Waxman) has is verbatim from interviews you did with cops while researching the film. Mark L. Lester: Yes, I went to a police station and talked to the juvenile officer; I described a case like this and the scenes in the movie—“What would you do?” I just copied his answers down and put them in the script.

Psycho II and Fright Night’s Tom Holland has story and co-screenplay credit; were there significant differences between his draft and what wound up on screen? Mark L. Lester: There was an additional writer [Barry Schneider] who didn’t take credit, but we worked on making it more like A Clockwork Orange, with the dialogue. None of that was in Tom Holland’s script, so we rewrote it to be more like Clockwork Orange, where the gang talked in their own kind of language. And then there was a large punk element added, because that movement was just taking hold in England. I got the costuming and the whole flavor of the punks from that, from British magazines and so forth.

How difficult was it to find a school to shoot in? I imagine a lot of high schools would object to a movie like this filming in their hallways. Mark L. Lester: Well, that was Toronto’s Central High. We shot it during the summertime, so the school was available. We did put graffiti on the walls and it was very hard to get it off, so when the kids came back to school, all the graffiti was still there. It caused quite a stir.

How did you wind up casting Perry King as Andy Norris? Mark L. Lester: I just interviewed him; I had seen him in Bad, the Andy Warhol film. But when it came time to do the scene in the wood shop, it was a mini-revolt. He said, “No, I can’t kill a kid on a table saw! That’s too gruesome, with the blood splattering on my face… That’s beyond anything I could do.” I said, “But Perry, don’t you remember, you boiled that slave alive in Mandingo!” He said, “Oh, that’s rightI guess it’s OK then.”

How about Roddy McDowall? He’s terrific as Corrigan. Mark L. Lester: I just knew him from Planet of the Apes and had always wanted to work with him. So I asked him to do it, and he was fantastic.

McDowall drove the car himself for the scene where Corrigan tries to run Stegman down. Was that his choice? Mark L. Lester: I was gonna use a stuntperson, but he said, “No, no, I want to drive, and I’m gonna drive really crazy.” I got in the back seat to do the sound, and he just took off and started driving insane, right up to the crash point. It was unbelievable; he was swerving all over the road.

So he didn’t have any qualms about the film’s violence? Mark L. Lester: No, he was a real professional. Everyone wanted to be involved in a hip, young movie that was different, and cutting-edge at the time. Even Lalo Schifrin, who was considered a very prestigious composer, wanted to do it, and he brought in Alice Cooper to do the theme song (“I Am the Future”).

That was quite an odd match of musical talents… Mark L. Lester: Yeah… Schifrin brought in a guy named Gary Osborne to write the song with him, and brought Alice Cooper in to perform it, and he did a really good job.

Another musical highlight is when Stegman surprises Andy by playing a piano concerto in his class. According to the credits, Van Patten wrote that piece himself. Mark L. Lester: That’s right. I was going to use another piece of music, and then he said, “No, no, let me use my own.”

How did Van Patten wind up being cast? Mark L. Lester: I saw him on a TV show, The White Shadow. He was playing a bad kidnot like he does in this movie, but he was perfect. This is his best work ever as an actor; he actually directs now. And Michael J. Fox I saw on TV also; it must have been Palmerstown, U.S.A. I hired him based on that, and it was only his second feature film.

Merrie Lynn Ross, who plays Andy’s wife, was also a producer on Class. How did that come about? Mark L. Lester: She put up some money for the film. I had worked with her before; she was in Bobbie Jo and the Outlaw for me.

It’s interesting that she would help with the financing of a movie in which she’s so rudely treated on screen… Mark L. Lester: Yeah, but she never complained. She’s not naked in [the rape scene], she’s fully clothed… Also, the Canadian producer, Arthur Kent, became the “Scud Stud.” During the first Gulf War with George Bush, he was the guy reporting for the TV news on the rooftop [from the war zone), and became known as the “Scud Stud.” Then he protested a dangerous assignment and started picketing the network that was Arthur Kent.

Your stunt coordinator was Terry J. Leonard, who had just done Conan the Barbarian and Raiders of the Lost Ark. Were there any stunt scenes that posed particular challenges? Mark L. Lester: In those days, there was no CGI, so the whole ending on the rooftop was actually a stunt guy crashing through glass and right into the auditorium. We flipped a car in another scene—but the movie revolved a lot more around the thriller aspects than any big stunts, so in that sense, it was different from films today. It didn’t rely on big action gags through the whole movie, it relied on the suspense of the teacher and what was going to happen to him.

Speaking of potentially injurious situations, you’ve said that a lot of extras in the club were real punk kids. Mark L. Lester: Yeah, I actually held auditions for them. They came in and were all handpicked; they had to have certain hairdos and all that, so it was very carefully done. And then they were really slam-dancing hard into people, hurting them, and we had to carry a few people out of there!

As far as the staged mayhem goes, were there concerns about the film’s violent content while you were shooting it? Mark L. Lester: I didn’t have any, but later on it was banned in certain countries, like Switzerland. It was considered too controversial, with the teacher killing the kids like that. But the wood-shop scene became the biggest crowd-pleaser of the movie. When the teacher and the boy go at it with the table saw, the audience just went wild every time that scene played; they couldn’t wait to see him kill that kid.

Class of 1984 was released in the U.S. by United Film Distribution, which had sent out movies like Dawn of the Dead and Mother’s Day unrated. Was there ever talk of releasing Class the same way? Mark L. Lester: No, they wanted to cut down the table-saw scene and a bunch of others, and it ended up getting an R rating. But the funny thing is, by mistake the prints ended up getting struck with the X version; those were the ones that got released, and no one ever questioned it.

The film got widely mixed reviews when it first came out-but surprisingly, one of the raves was from Roger Ebert, who was on a tear against “dead teenager” movies at the time. Mark L. Lester: Yeah, Ebert really kicked things off; he saw it at the Cannes Film Festival and gave it a great review. About half the reviews overall were great, and then some people didn’t like the violence and so forth. Newsweek was a bad review, Time was a good review, the New York papers liked it-and it did huge business.

Did you think that when you made this way back in the day, that it would have reached cult-status, much like it has now? Mark L. Lester: No, I had no idea that it would take off like it did, although until it opened, it was very controversial when it came out. It was in Time Magazine, and Ronald Reagan once had a speech about education, and they put the pictures from the movie into an editorial, and it had such controversial press, so it took off back then, and at the beginning of the film, I’d put a warning to the country that this would happen, the future couldn’t get much worse I don’t have the EXACT wording.

“Class of 1984” is not a great movie but it works with quiet, strong efficiency to achieve more or less what we expect from a movie with such a title. It is violent, funny, scary, contains boldly outlined characters, and gets us involved. It also has a lot of style. One of the reasons for the film’s style may be that it was made by people who knew what they were doing. …It tells a strong, simple story. It is acted well. It is not afraid to be comic at times and, even better, it’s not afraid at the end to pull out all the stops and give us the sort of Grand Guignol conclusion that the slasher movies always botch.   Interview with Actress Lisa Langlois

Class of 1984, you played Patsy the Punk. A completely different character…as rotten-of-an-apple as you can get. Was it fun to be vicious and terrorizing rather than terrorized? Lisa Langlois: Well, it’s so much more interesting. Although understand, they brought me in to play the nice girl, Michael J. Fox’s girlfriend. I went in and they told me they really saw me in that part. I said, “You know what? Would you just let me come back dressed and acting like the other character?” I explained that I grew up with four brothers. I’ve been around a lot of their friends and I’ve seen these kinds of tough people. I know how to do it. So I came back in, did the role and they loved it.

You really stand out in that film. How much of your characterization was in the original script? Lisa Langlois: I’ve gotta tell you…there was really not a lot of dialogue for me in that film. Everything that I did was improv and they kept it in the final cut. That’s what I liked about the director, Mark Lester. He didn’t have an ego about you throwing a line in or some business. He loved it.

What was the experience like for you making Class of 1984? Lisa Langlois: Not good. One was that all the Canadians (not the Americans) got asked to work for scale. They said they would give us a buyout later because they didn’t really have the money to make this film. And then the movie became this big hit and none of us ever got paid any residuals for television or video, etc. The extras really got mistreated. They hardly got paid. They got peanut butter and jam sandwiches. That scene where the girl takes her clothes off in front of the punks…that was really hard to do. It involved real acting for Tim Van Patton and me because she didn’t want to do that scene. She didn’t want to take her clothes off. She was shaking.

It reminded me of what happened to me in Phobia. You get intimidated and you don’t want to make waves. You’re young. You want people to like you. And they make it sound like it’s no big deal. That poor girl was literally shaking. I remember it was so sad, my makeup artist was making her up and I was sitting next to her. She told the girl, “Don’t worry, I’ll make you up so that no one will recognize you.” And I thought, that’s NOT just the issue. It doesn’t matter whether someone can see your face…in front of everybody, you’re taking your clothes off! Right. Timothy and I were talking about how uncomfortable we were with that. He said something to Mark because that guy was a gentleman. I just loved him.

There’s an almost lascivious nature to your character Patsy in that scene with the naked girl…almost lesbianic…? Lisa Langlois: That was an acting choice I made. Like I mentioned, I made the choices with Patsy because in the script she was just…standing there. That was one of my complaints. We had this really terrific stunt coordinator with Terry Leonard, and he never gave me anything to do in the fight scenes. Nothing. I decided I would be this character who’s really perverted in that I got off on sex and violence. What I would do is, when they were beating people up, I would jump up and down, and dance around. And when someone had to take their clothes off, I would get excited.

Tim was generally unhappy on this shoot. At the time, the movie was very violent. To me, it seemed so surreal and over-the-top and exaggerated because where I came from, I could never imagine kids behaving like that in school or having to go through metal detectors to get into class. Again, it was the wild, wild west we talked about earlier. The punk rockers that were hired to be extras…they weren’t really extras, they were real punks.

Did they cause any problems on the set? Lisa Langlois: Well, for me personally, they knew I wasn’t a real punk rocker. I had my hair purple, pink and some other colors. So a) they knew I was an actor and not one of them, and b) they didn’t appreciate me wearing a dress. Several times, I had punk rocker women come up to me and say, “We’re gonna get you…”

That’s awful! Lisa Langlois: Mark really wanted reality. It would have made more sense for me to have a wig than to dye my hair all those colors anyway. It was hell getting my hair to look normal again. But I was terrified. You won’t notice in the movie, but whenever there were big scenes like in a club or whatever, you wouldn’t see me. Because I would literally disappear.

For your own safety… Lisa Langlois: Yes. I was afraid. When they were slamming people, they were actually doing it. It was for real. They were really hitting each other. The punk extras got off on it.

Lester has talked in documentaries about going out and finding these punks for the film. Lisa Langlois: It wasn’t well thought out for the actors. It wasn’t taking care of us. I was afraid because I knew there was no protection on that set.

Did the female punks consider you a poser? Lisa Langlois: I think that would be the term you would use now. They just felt I was a fraud, I guess you would say. We were embarrassed to be in that film and it ended up being this big, big hit.

What did you think when you saw the finished product? Lisa Langlois: I didn’t go see it for a long time. However, I remember my mother saying that it was the quintessential moment for her when she knew I had done a good job as an actress. Because she was in a theater watching it, and when I got killed at the end, the audience got up and cheered. It was a real memorable moment for her.

Great! The audience was so engaged, they cheered. Lisa Langlois: Although, honestly…I don’t think I’m killed. I think I survived.

A car comes crashing down on your head! We’d have to side with the people who think you died. It’s pretty extreme. Lisa Langlois: Yeah, but it IS the movies. And I’m still talking. Which reminds me, I had completely forgotten about the part where the gang members killed Roddy McDowall’s animal in the biology lab. That was horrible. That was really, really horrible. I watched it and just thought, “Oh, wow…” But it was really great to act opposite Roddy in that movie.

The scene where he has the gun pointed at you is quite a good moment. Lisa Langlois: It was one of those things where you’re thinking, “Oh my God, I have this scene with Roddy McDowall…how am I going to do this?”

Do you think Roddy was one of those people who was unhappy making this movie? Lisa Langlois: I don’t know. Because the scene with the gun was really the only one I had with him. When there’s a big scene like that with lots of people, you don’t get any instant one on one time.

We wanted to ask you about one of the most powerful, unnerving scenes in the movie. The sort of Clockwork Orange scene where the gang goes in and rapes Perry King’s wife. Was that difficult? Lisa Langlois: So upsetting. I just saw it. Again, that was my idea to get a Polaroid camera and take a picture of it.

That was a good idea. It’s certainly revolting! Lisa Langlois: It’s really revolting. And then to give the Polaroid of his raped wife to Perry at the event. It was also my idea to put my finger in my mouth…my middle finger…and summon him with it. I came up with the moment when Patsy, like a little juvenile delinquent, takes her finger and pushes it through a hole she makes with her index finger and thumb.

You should be really proud of yourself, Lisa. Lisa Langlois: You know what? I had to find something to do because they never gave me any lines. In fact, before I thought of lines and things to do, my boyfriend suggested I wear a chain that makes noise. So whenever the audience would hear that chain, they would know that character is present. I thought that would never fly because the sound department wouldn’t go for that. We have to say the choices you made are fantastic. We couldn’t take our eyes off you. Even in the scenes in which you aren’t necessarily supposed to be the focus of attention. There was a certain…unpredictability to your character that made us always want to watch you.

Was the “kissy kissy” thing your idea as well? Lisa Langlois: Yes, that too. Ironically, they gave me a Marilyn Monroe shirt to wear. I’m wearing a shirt with her face on it. I also really hated my makeup in Class of 1984 because in my mind, that was so not punk. The makeup artist that I had was this woman who was not a young person. Privately, I thought, “She doesn’t know what punk is.” She kept bringing out all the glitter stuff and everything. It was so not the character.

Interview with Actor Timothy Van Patten

How did you get cast in Class of 1984? Timothy Van Patten: I have to go in the wayback machine; it was 1980 or ’81 when we made it. I think it was just a routine casting call. You know, the part couldn’t have been further, at that point in time, from the person I actually was, which was sort of a health fanatic. The character was a thrasher, a total punk rocker. In order to prepare for the movie, I went up to Toronto and started hanging out in punk clubs, which was a whole new experience for me (laughs).

Did you get into any hairy situations doing that? Timothy Van Patten: I was with some other actors who were sharing the experience. I never got into any major situations.

What was your working relationship with Mark Lester? Timothy Van Patten: Mark was a very good director, very capable. Decisive. He had a vision, and has turned out quite a few memorable films. He absolutely knew what he wanted, and I remember the entire experience going smoothly.

You’ve got that great scene with Michael J. Fox in the bathroom. What do you remember from shooting it? Timothy Van Patten: Michael was the first person I met on the film. We befriended each other immediately and started hanging out. Actually, we went to a pawnshop and each bought a guitar, and in our free time we’d go to the park and play. We became pretty good friends. Man, so much time has passed. Michael was playing the opposite of me, sort of a clean-cut kid. You could tell the guy was really good even then. He made his small part memorable. As the years go on, I appreciate him more and more because of his body of work.

 In a interview Lester talked about the scene where you play the piano concerto, which you’re credited with composing yourself. Is that true, or did you work with the film’s composer Lalo Schifrin at all? Timothy Van Patten: You know something, it was totally improvised. I play the piano, but I don’t read music. At the time, it was just some sort of song I was fiddling around with; there was nothing written down for it. I was under the impression that I would play that piece, and they would replace it with different music by Lalo or something. They ended up keeping it, and they paid me a whopping $50 Canadian for it. I don’t think I even cashed the check. I may still have it somewhere.

In those days, was that like $15 American? Timothy Van Patten: Exactly! It’s hysterical. It totally works for the character. It totally works.

It’s clear that you’re really playing—your fingers are hitting those keys and that really adds to the scene. Timothy Van Patten: I haven’t seen the movie in a long time, but I think they left in the production sound. The sort of music-class, banged-up piano sound.

Do you recall the scene where you beat yourself up in the bathroom to get Andy Norris (Perry King) in trouble? Timothy Van Patten: All those scenes, they were all so heightened that for an actor, they were fun. There’s a lot of stuntwork in the movie, which I loved doing when I was that age. Perry was a very experienced actor, and I had just started acting three years before that. I had come off a television series called The White Shadow, and I wasn’t that experienced. Working with a guy like Perry made it easy. The writing was good, and those scenes worked between Perry and I. That bathroom was rigged, but I remember hitting the mirror as hard as I could, and it didn’t break. I said, “F**k it! I’ve got to stay with this!” and slammed my head into the mirror again, and it broke. If you look at the film, I’m a little bit dazed after that first hit.

Did they give you a stunt bump in pay for that? Timothy Van Patten: No! We all sort of did our own stunts in that film. The big fight with the African-American gang under where the highways converge, that was mostly us. The great Terry Leonard was the stunt coordinator. He was a legendary stuntman; he was Harrison Ford’s stunt double in the first Indiana Jones film. This guy has had every bone in his body broken twice, including his back and his neck. That was a thrill for me, working with Terry.

McDowall’s character “Mr. Corrigan”  is shown pointing the gun at the class is an alternate poster. Have you seen that one? Timothy Van Patten: No! I’d love a copy of that. I just thought that scene was extraordinary. I remember looking at his copy of the script, spying it when it was on a desk while he was rehearsing. Every page of scenes he was in was covered, front and back, with notes. Small, small handwriting, top to bottom. It just impressed the shit out of me. That guy was a total pro. He and Perry really anchored the movie. All the other actors like Stefan Arngrim, Lisa Langlois, Neil Clifford and those guys—they lifted me up. I was the oddest piece of the puzzle, because I really wasn’t as experienced as all of them. I didn’t relate to the material as much as they did; Stefan Arngrim had some experience in his life in that world. They were all totally invested in their characters, and they carried me along and taught me a lot.)

"Back when we worked normal hours I never felt anxiety going back into work," someone at Rockstar Lincoln told me. "But over the past year I have. Staff at Lincoln have been in crunch mode on Red Dead Redemption 2 for over a year, multiple people I spoke to at the studio told me - long even by Rockstar standards. Since October 2017, late finishes during the week and on two Saturdays each month have become mandatory. Breaks are unpaid and "often" worked through. In August this year, hours increased further. Every working week was six days, with hours just under the 60 mark.

"And the fear is those at the top have seen how profitable this is working at 150, 200 per cent and wonder why we should ever slow down. Now months have turned into over a year and we're staring down the barrel of this not actually ending because there will always be more things coming out."

For night shifts, UK employment laws state a person can only work eight out of every 24 hours, but Rockstar employees sign agreements to waive this condition.

"I am tired. I don't have time for myself, or to see those I care about," another Rockstar Lincoln employee told me. "I don't remember the last time I went on a date with my girlfriend. My family live 30 minutes away and I don't remember the last time I saw them in person. There are friends I used to see on a weekly basis that I am now lucky to see every few months. There are friends that I used to see every few months that I haven't seen for years. When there is a requirement to work six days a week, and longer hours within the week, you have to 'sacrifice' a day off to actually live your life. It becomes a choice of missing out on rest and being tired for the week, or being selfish and taking a day for yourself, which is a horrible choice to make."

Everyone I spoke to at Rockstar Lincoln said these hours were "mandatory".

Former Rockstar and Telltale employee Job Stauffer tweeted last week that on GTA4 working in the New York office was like "working with a gun to your head seven days a week" 

"Crunch gradually goes up until you're in a state where you're working all available hours, basically," a Rockstar North employee told me. "You do 40 hours a week and that's fine and normal. And then things get busier and you do 60-70 hours a week. And you do that a long time. And then you get mandated weekend days. 'We want everyone in on every Saturday for the next X amount of months. And we don't want anyone taking time off.' And then it would be 'We want to start seeing you every second Sunday.' And then it would be 'Why aren't you at work?' I had that on GTA5 and said 'Well, I've done everything.' And the response would be 'Well, we need to see you in.' It did genuinely seem like it was a lot of hours for very little [gain]."

The effect of these increased hours on staff health is inescapable, staff say.

"I know people who suffered breakdowns," one Rockstar North staff member told me. "We'd be told quietly those people had to go and they'd been taken ill and be off for three months. Some people, we'd hear later they wouldn't be coming back. There was a time you were always worried - what if you pushed it too far? I know someone on GTA5 who took a stroke aged 30-something. They went back to work after a while. It was brutal. That was the lifestyle."

A Series to Savour - Part II

And here I am again, trying to put together my euphoria of seeing Team India triumph in Australia against the oddest of odds. If you are here reading this, I assume you might have read the first part which covered the Adelaide debacle and the Melbourne revival. If not, you may read it now!

Coming back to where I left in the previous post, 2020 ended with an absolute bonkers of a turn around from India and guess what – 2021 started with 2 outstanding test matches, totally unexpected and other-worldly stuff, each of them classics in their own way. This would be long, but I hope you read on till the end - watching this series was an extraordinary experience!

Chapter 3: Grit and Survival

Alarm Time: 4:58AM. The cold January mornings cannot win against me now. Body and mind are in sync. Got to wake up and catch all the action, that is it! No two thoughts about not waking up! Series is level 1-1.

Toss: Another toss gone in favor of Australia. But the good news is, Rohit Sharma is available now to help Rahane. But wait, Umesh Yadav limped off in Melbourne. So, Saini is in too. And India have to deal with David Warner, Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith in SCG. Tough work ahead?

We started by sending back Warner early, rain stopped play, then resumed and the day ended with Labuschagne and Smith all set to torment us on day 2. But, almost shockingly, Labuschagne played a wrong shot and Jadeja got a wicket and that was what was required. Wickets kept falling at one end, Smith kept batting at the other end. He got to his century, and now, after 8-9 down, he started his ODI mode of batting. There is no way he is getting out, and then, a moment of magic! Out of nowhere, Jadeja swooped in from square leg, shot a bullet throw with one stump in sight, hit it and caught Smith short while attempting a 2nd run. Whoa! Mind blown! That throw there felt like an antidote to Guptill’s throw in WC2019 (if you remember!).

Alright, we have to bat now. Not an easy total to overcome, but India have started well. 50+ with no loss. A little drowsiness crept in due to lack of sleep, but Rohit didn’t allow me to doze off. He was out, and Gill was gone too! On Day 3, many impactful things happen. Rahane chops on, Hazlewood had an extraordinary fielding moment to runout Vihari, Pant was smashed on his elbow, Pujara got to his slowest 50 ever, Jadeja was smashed on his thumb – his bowling hand! Oh God! The list is never ending. That day just spelt doom for India. Pant wouldn’t keep and Jadeja wouldn’t bowl in the 3rd innings. There was no way India was going to come back into this test. Australia piled on the runs pretty quickly with Green going berserk and they declared with a 400+ target. Most importantly, India would have to bat out 132 overs.

Dream: India bat out the 132 overs. Pujara gets a fine hundred and India some how manage a draw! 

34 Overs were done with on Day 4, Gill and Rohit gave a decent start again, but both were gone before end of the day. On Day 5, Rahane was done with in the 2nd over itself. Now, 96 overs to play and 7 wickets in hand. Out strode Rishabh Pant, who did not keep all through the 3rd innings, with no protection to his hurt elbow. Now, Rishabh Pant is Rishabh Pant. I don’t know what goes in his mind. I am very clear what goes through Pujara’s though - just bat! But Pant, after a slow start, begins to target Lyon. Heart is pounding too quick to his hoicks down the ground. In between, Paine was dropping catches. But Pant would continue. The new ball is due in 2 overs. India needed close to 150 now with almost 50 overs to play. Pant in the 90s. Till then I was counting balls to bat out. But now, I started counting the runs to get. And then, all the luck Pant had, suddenly deserted him and Lyon’s ball flew off his edge and was caught in gully.

Switch modes! Count the balls again. Without Pant, India is not chasing this down. Suddenly Pujara smashes 3 4s off Cummins. Whoa! Has Pant rubbed his intent into Pujara now? No! Hazlewood cleans up Pujara. Vihari and Ashwin somehow manage things until Tea – Vihari already tore a hamstring and Ashwin had a horrible back pain. 36 overs to bat out!

Last session started with Ashwin being given out only to be overturned by DRS and Australia continued their short-ball barrage! Ashwin found it tough but hung on. Jadeja was padded up – I am not sure he can hold a bat with his left hand. I was standing close to the TV, watching every over – just the 6 balls – closely, take a walk during ad breaks, again come back to stand in front of the TV. Over by over, Vihari and Ashwin were continuing to block. 25 overs to go, 15 overs to go, 10 overs to go, 6 overs to go. God! This is nerve wracking stuff. One wicket here, and everything will cut loose. Vihari edges one off Starc, but Paine drops it again. I am dying! 1 over to go. And finally, the Aussies decide to shake hands.

Yes! India’s grit allowed them to grind it out on a Day 5 pitch in Australia against their best attack, survived 130+ overs with a one-legged no.6, a bad-back no.7 and a one-handed no.8 waiting. The most satisfying and heartwarming draw I have ever seen. I had a smile imagining the guy who was assigned the job of compiling the highlights package of that last session! We are going to Brisbane with the series level. Who would have expected that after that 36/9?

Chapter 4: Heroes & Hysteria

Alarm Time(s): Brisbane has a 5:30AM start but weather forced 5:00AM starts from Day 2 onwards. So the wake up time switched between 4:50AM and 5:20AM. Decider guys! Bring it on!!

Toss: Australia haven’t lost in Brisbane for 32 years, and they had the best start. Win the toss, and start batting. What about India? No Vihari & Jadeja (obviously!), no Ashwin (hmm, okay!), no Bumrah also (shocker!) and India play 3 debutants (yes, I’d call Thakur a debutant) and recall Agarwal.

India get Warner and Harris cheaply, but as a sweet surprise, Sundar, on his debut, gets Smith out cheaply as well. But Labuschagne bats on with Wade and he gets a 100, scores moves past 200. Looks like a routine Aussie dominated day, and again, India fight back. Natarajan, on his debut, sends back both Wade and Labuschagne. Another wicket and India would be in the driver’s seat but Paine and Green bat it out. Thakur has an excellent spell on Day 2 to get Paine and Cummins which was preceded by Sundar cleaning up Green. 4 runs and 3 wickets. Woohoo… an Australian collapse I thought. But the tail wagged. 50+ runs for the last 2 wickets. India start by losing Gill early and Rohit got out in an outrageous manner – as per Sunil Gavaskar – but he was done in by Lyon I felt. Again, it is up to Rahane and Pujara to bail us out on Day 3. Some excellent balls, some rash shots, some terrific catching and 2-point-something sessions later, India were 188/6. About 180 runs behind. The average experience of the remaining batsmen – 1.8 Tests!!

And then comes the partnership I enjoyed the most all through the series - Sundar & Thakur! Thakur pulls over square leg for a 6 to open his account, he plays some delectable drives, hardly plays a loose shot against the spinner – very controlled in his defense. Sundar on the other end was playing as if it was a net session – casually blocking, some wristy flicks and neat driving down the ground. Slowly the lead was coming down, and I was dancing inside. Is this for real? This has probably never happened before – a debutant no.7 and a 0.1-test experienced no.8 defying Australian fast bowlers in Gabba. Such assured was Thakur’s defense against Lyon, it was an extraordinary moment of triumph when he danced down the track and lofted him for 6 and he reached 50 – my hands automatically clapped, almost involuntarily. Sundar hits a no-look 6 over long on and he too reaches 50 a little later. His half-century celebration was, I felt, cute! What-a-knock young man! The score crosses 300 and India slowly cutting down the deficit. And then the Australian pace attack, in a space of 10 overs and 20-something runs, take all the 4 remaining wickets. The lead, what could’ve been 100-something is now a meagre 33. Relief!!!

Day 4, with Australia having 10 wickets, is supposedly going to be a long day for Indian bowlers. Warner and Harris are scoring briskly, 80-something for no-loss and again, India fight back! How many times are we turning it around – just WOW! In a span of 6 overs, Australia lost 4 wickets. But Smith was still there, with Green and the lead was over 200 in no time. The first instance of the pitch misbehaving – Smith gets a shooter, fends at it, Rahane grabs it. Siraj is ecstatic, so am I. An Indian fast bowler feasting at the Gabba! India in here with a chance to have a less-than 300 target. Lots of discussion about the weather – Australia is not declaring. They are batting on! Lead is now above 300. I am a little towards the rain gods now – this pitch is too much for India to bat out a draw. With 328 as target, after a magnificent 5-for from Siraj and Thakur’s 4-for, India to bat now. Just 2 overs and rain stops play, over to Day 5 now – 324 runs, 98.1 overs and 10 wickets!

Dream: India, instead of playing out for a draw, play positive cricket and conjure up a win. We win the series 2-1 and yes, India breach the Gabba Fortress. 

Surprisingly, the weather is clear. So back to counting overs now. 98 to go! Rohit goes early but Gill and Pujara (that man again!) somehow manage until lunch. Especially Pujara, is he really human? Kept taking blow after blow on his body but kept soldiering on! It didn’t feel like he was going to move, whatever is thrown at him. After lunch, Gill smashed a 6-4-4 in a Starc over and Pujara finished that over with another 4 – 20 runs in 1 over. Is India going for the win? This is really a dream chase! Lyon gets one to edge, and Gill is gone. Another batsman gone in the 90s in the 4th innings. The captain walks in! What is his plan here? Block, wait and then decide? No! Rahane was in super attacking mode – he hit a 6 of Lyon which was the peak Rahane I know. But the attacking intent costs him his wicket. India 3 down. 161 runs away. 43 overs to play. Pujara at one end! Surely India can draw this. I was really glued now. Tension!!

Out walks Rishabh Pant again, at no. 5. This is the same Pant who hit 97 in Sydney in almost similar situation. But, the same Pant who attacked Lyon at will in Sydney was very cautious and calm this time. He did try one or two big hits, one was a stumping chance missed, the other was a huge 6. But Pant did not want to get carried away. He wanted to probably take it into the last few overs. May be, turn it into a T20 chase? What composure - is he just 23? While Pant was grabbing all the attention, at the other end, Pujara got to 50 (this is now slower than his SCG 50). The new ball was taken. 22 overs remaining. 100 runs to get. India can actually win this. I can’t take it anymore! It has come to a zone where watching this game was dangerous for the weak hearted.

2nd ball with the new ball, Pujara is gone. Is that it? Is the new ball going to be the Australian ally? No! Pant reached his 50 of 100 balls with Agarwal at the other end, but Agarwal throws it away. 63 to get. 80 balls remaining. Sundar joins Pant. It is soon 50 to get of 48 balls. Sundar, out of nowhere, smashes a 6 and a 4 of Cummins. I am on my feet. I don’t know where I am. I have lost note of everything around me. I am only watching, I am just clapping, I am shouting as if the players can hear me, I can hear my heart pounding. 39 of 42. Pant cheekily sweeps one for 4, then smashes another 4, and then a ball hits the rough and runs for 4 byes. 15 of the over. 24 of 36. I am jumping. I am speechless. It is like I am in Gabba.

Another 9 run over now. And I am actually shivering (even typing these last few lines). 15 of 30 balls. Victory up for grabs! Pant on 76. In that 96th over, Sundar reverse sweeps and is bowled. What have you done boy? Why? Tension! Thakur walks in. 10 of 24. Pant pulls one for 4, I want to shout. I want to cry. Wait wait! Pant wants to hit a 6 and win it, flies of the edge, luckily in no man’s land. Heart is probably beating the fastest ever. Thakur is out. But they have crossed. Pant on strike, 3 to get. He drives, they run 2, are they coming back for 3, no the ball has run down and touched the ropes, India have won! India win!! I am out of of my mind. I was alone in the room. No one to hug. No one to share with. I wanted to run on the streets. I shot myself a selfie video with TV in the background. I have never experienced this, even after that Dhoni 6 in 2011. This is something else. My heart was swelling with pride, my mood was really high! I had patted myself on the back for putting aside every other thing and watch this incredible moment.

Wow! That was the highest high I have experienced watching the end of a test match. Few things will stay with me for a lifetime – the 20 run over which was orchestrated by Gill, the resilience of Pujara all through the series (that hit on his finger when he immediately left the bat, ouch!), that hook for 6 by Sundar off Cummins and that last punch down the ground by Pant – and along with these special moments, just trying to gather myself that India did all of this without a lot of their regulars. Take a bow Team India!! What is the life lesson learnt here – “Life will give you opportunities, you’ve got to grab them and turn them in your favor, deal with the obstacles and ultimately relish the challenge and achieve the unthinkable!”

Here Come the Fake Videos, Too

The scene opened on a room with a red sofa, a potted plant and the kind of bland modern art you’d see on a therapist’s wall.

In the room was Michelle Obama, or someone who looked exactly like her. Wearing a low-cut top with a black bra visible underneath, she writhed lustily for the camera and flashed her unmistakable smile.

Then, the former first lady’s doppelgänger began to strip.

The video, which appeared on the online forum Reddit, was what’s known as a “deepfake”--an ultrarealistic fake video made with artificial intelligence software. It was created using a program called FakeApp, which superimposed Mrs. Obama’s face onto the body of a pornographic film actress. The hybrid was uncanny--if you didn’t know better, you might have thought it was really her.

Until recently, realistic computer-generated video was a laborious pursuit available only to big-budget Hollywood productions or cutting-edge researchers. Social media apps like Snapchat include some rudimentary face-morphing technology.

But in recent months, a community of hobbyists has begun experimenting with more powerful tools, including FakeApp--a program that was built by an anonymous developer using open-source software written by Google. FakeApp makes it free and relatively easy to create realistic face swaps and leave few traces of manipulation. Since a version of the app appeared on Reddit in January, it has been downloaded more than 120,000 times, according to its creator.

Deepfakes are one of the newest forms of digital media manipulation, and one of the most obviously mischief-prone. It’s not hard to imagine this technology’s being used to smear politicians, create counterfeit revenge porn or frame people for crimes. Lawmakers have already begun to worry about how deepfakes could be used for political sabotage and propaganda.

Even on morally lax sites like Reddit, deepfakes have raised eyebrows. Recently, FakeApp set off a panic after Motherboard, the technology site, reported that people were using it to create pornographic deepfakes of celebrities. Pornhub, Twitter and other sites quickly banned the videos, and Reddit closed a handful of deepfake groups, including one with nearly 100,000 members.

Some users on Reddit defended deepfakes and blamed the media for overhyping their potential for harm. Others moved their videos to alternative platforms, rightly anticipating that Reddit would crack down under its rules against nonconsensual pornography. And a few expressed moral qualms about putting the technology into the world.

Then, they kept making more.

The deepfake creator community is now in the internet’s shadows. But while out in the open, it gave an unsettling peek into the future.

“This is turning into an episode of Black Mirror,” wrote one Reddit user. The post raised the ontological questions at the heart of the deepfake debate: Does a naked image of Person A become a naked image of Person B if Person B’s face is superimposed in a seamless and untraceable way? In a broader sense, on the internet, what is the difference between representation and reality?

The user then signed off with a shrug: “Godspeed rebels.”

After lurking for several weeks in Reddit’s deepfake community, I decided to see how easy it was to create a (safe for work, nonpornographic) deepfake using my own face.

I started by downloading FakeApp and enlisting two technical experts to help me. The first was Mark McKeague, a colleague in The New York Times’s research and development department. The second was a deepfake creator I found through Reddit, who goes by the nickname Derpfakes.

Because of the controversial nature of deepfakes, Derpfakes would not give his or her real name. Derpfakes started posting deepfake videos on YouTube a few weeks ago, specializing in humorous offerings like Nicolas Cage playing Superman. The account has also posted some how-to videos on deepfake creation.

What I learned is that making a deepfake isn’t simple. But it’s not rocket science, either.

The first step is to find, or rent, a moderately powerful computer. FakeApp uses a suite of machine learning tools called TensorFlow, which was developed by Google’s A.I. division and released to the public in 2015. The software teaches itself to perform image-recognition tasks through trial and error. The more processing power on hand, the faster it works.

To get more speed, Mark and I used a remote server rented through Google Cloud Platform. It provided enough processing power to cut the time frame down to hours, rather than the days or weeks it might take on my laptop.

Once Mark set up the remote server and loaded FakeApp on it, we were on to the next step: data collection.

Picking the right source data is crucial. Short video clips are easier to manipulate than long clips, and scenes shot at a single angle produce better results than scenes with multiple angles. Genetics also help. The more the faces resemble each other, the better.

I’m a brown-haired white man with a short beard, so Mark and I decided to try several other brown-haired, stubbled white guys. We started with Ryan Gosling. (Aim high, right?) I also sent Derpfakes, my outsourced Reddit expert, several video options to choose from.

Next, we took several hundred photos of my face, and gathered images of Mr. Gosling’s face using a clip from a recent TV appearance. FakeApp uses these images to train the deep learning model and teach it to emulate our facial expressions.

To get the broadest photo set possible, I twisted my head at different angles, making as many different faces as I could.

Mark then used a program to crop those images down, isolating just our faces, and manually deleted any blurred or badly cropped photos. He then fed the frames into FakeApp. In all, we used 417 photos of me, and 1,113 of Mr. Gosling.

When the images were ready, Mark pressed “start” on FakeApp, and the training began. His computer screen filled with images of my face and Mr. Gosling’s face, as the program tried to identify patterns and similarities.

About eight hours later, after our model had been sufficiently trained, Mark used FakeApp to finish putting my face on Mr. Gosling’s body. The video was blurry and bizarre, and Mr. Gosling’s face occasionally flickered into view. Only the legally blind would mistake the person in the video for me.

We did better with a clip of Chris Pratt, the scruffy star of “Jurassic World,” whose face shape is a little more similar to mine. For this test, Mark used a bigger data set--1,861 photos of me, 1,023 of him--and let the model run overnight.

A few days later, Derpfakes, who had also been training a model, sent me a finished deepfake made using the footage I had sent and a video of the actor Jake Gyllenhaal. This one was much more lifelike, a true hybrid that mixed my facial features with his hair, beard and body.

Derpfakes repeated the process with videos of Jimmy Kimmel and Liev Schreiber, both of which turned out well. As an experienced deepfake creator, Derpfakes had a more intuitive sense of which source videos would produce a clean result, and more experience with the subtle blending and tweaking that takes place at the end of the deepfake process.

In all, our deepfake experiment took three days and cost $85.96 in Google Cloud Platform credits. That seemed like a small price to pay for stardom.

On the day of the school shooting last month in Parkland, Fla., a screenshot of a BuzzFeed News article, “Why We Need to Take Away White People’s Guns Now More Than Ever,” written by a reporter named Richie Horowitz, began making the rounds on social media.

The whole thing was fake. No BuzzFeed employee named Richie Horowitz exists, and no article with that title was ever published on the site. But the doctored image pulsed through right-wing outrage channels and was boosted by activists on Twitter. It wasn’t an A.I.-generated deepfake, or even a particularly sophisticated Photoshop job, but it did the trick.

Online misinformation, no matter how sleekly produced, spreads through a familiar process once it enters our social distribution channels. The hoax gets 50,000 shares, and the debunking an hour later gets 200. The carnival barker gets an algorithmic boost on services like Facebook and YouTube, while the expert screams into the void.

There’s no reason to believe that deepfake videos will operate any differently. People will share them when they’re ideologically convenient and dismiss them when they’re not. The dupes who fall for satirical stories from The Onion will be fooled by deepfakes, and the scrupulous people who care about the truth will find ways to detect and debunk them.

“There’s no choice,” said Hao Li, an assistant professor of computer science at the University of Southern California. Mr. Li, who is also the founder of Pinscreen, a company that uses artificial intelligence to create lifelike 3-D avatars, said the weaponization of A.I. was inevitable and would require a sudden shift in public awareness.

“I see this as the next form of communication,” he said. “I worry that people will use it to blackmail others, or do bad things. You have to educate people that this is possible.”

So, O.K. Here I am, telling you this: An A.I. program powerful enough to turn Michelle Obama into a pornography star, or transform a schlubby newspaper columnist into Jake Gyllenhaal, is in our midst. Manipulated video will soon become far more commonplace.

And there’s probably nothing we can do except try to bat the fakes down as they happen, pressure social media companies to fight misinformation aggressively, and trust our eyes a little less every day.

Josephine County Courts terror cell, Tax Assessor Attack, update:

Mr. Marx called again today, so, I called him back to make the appointment they claim they need for the bogus tax assessment. Mr. Marx referres to an assessment as “An Inspection“.

This attack scenario reminds me that the Sheriff Deputy I mentioned who is also Jeffrey Marx, may have introduced himself as “Deputy Mark Ross” that day, a twist on the name Marx, is Mark Ross when the X is a cross.

So I talked to Mr. Marx today. There is a lot of bullshit being tossed around from the county assessor, and it’s very clear that the Tax Assessor terror team has done this kind of attack scenario so many times that they have encountered every kind of resistance to it imaginable, so, Mr. Marx is like Johnny on the Spot with all of the right things to say to make the attack characteristics seem as a legitimate official process, all is the approved way business is done at the assessor, making Mr. Marx an innocent person who is just doing his job.

I advised of the danger, told Mr. Marx that he is not fooling me by pretending he is not aware of the danger, that the county is so dangerous that the reason the house in question is incomplete is because of the danger that exists in the county, that he might be shot at by the neighbor, and that I am shot at by the neighbor regularly, and more. Mr. Marx has all of the right things to say that justify the need for the assessment. I reminded him that he does not need an appointment and has easement rights to all of the assessed properties in the county. He replied to that by saying since I have a gate, that prevents easement access, that he respects the gate, and is bound to respect the gate, per Oregon legislation, which differs per state when there is a gate, he said.

The Courthouse terror cell is working a plan the claims I don‘t have a building permit for construction of the home that is not complete. I do have a building permit, it cost about $1,800 as I recall.

So, repeated different similar attacking from the court terror cell has consistently claimed that I don‘t have a building permit, when I do have one. In the past, the terror bastards have demanded that I show a permit, to people who are not county Building & Safety representatives, but are rather just “The People Who Show Up” to attack. I always deny access to my permit, it’s mine, is not for public access to thugs.

So, I felt on the phone call as if a number of different set-ups for different outcomes was being done by Mr. Marx, AKA: Sheriff Deputy Mark Ross. Had I insisted on a specific time and day, that makes me a bad guy, they would say I made a time that put the assessor in danger, and that I was there to hurt him waiting at that time. So, I refrained from saying a specific time or day, I have played this game before, it’s all a set-up to murder me.

I discussed a open opportunity for the assessor to do as he sees fit, within a reasonable and agreed upon time limit, and that it’s dangerous, that I don’t want to talk to him, or open the gate, so he agreed that he is able to walk the 200 feet or so to look at the unfinished house.

Later, about 45 minutes ago, I took a walk to the road. Someone driving Burton Mitchel Dietrick’s ten yard dump truck was sitting in it, idling at the Clyde Baum terror cell at 333 Jackpine waiting for me to go check my mail, when I took a few steps toward the mailbox, that is when the ten yard dump truck came down the road, to run me over, from Clyde’s house. I stepped the fuck back to clear the way for the Josephine County Courts Road Crew of terror in the truck.

He drove by, I could almost hear the sound an Ox makes.

I tried again to check the mail.

That is when someone driving one of the Myers terror cell vehicles came down the road, also looked like was staged not far from Clyde’s house, just about at 315 Jackpine is where that one seemed to have come from.

I decided to skip the mail checking, and wait until there are fewer terror bastards from the County Courts trying to run me over. (tumblr made the text small, I had nothing to do with the font size change, is Centurylink generated terror to fuck with me when I write.

Stay tuned, the Tax Assessor  attack scenario is not over until the appraisal is put back the way it was before, or, better yet, when it’s done correctly. As it stands now, they are forcing me to pay tax on something I cannot use, due to the county conditions being so dangerous that it’s not possible to complete the work without being killed. There should be no tax assessed value on that structure until the final inspection from Building & Safety is done, until then, such unfinished structures are a liability, and deplete the assessed value of the rest of the subject property, not increase it. I have been paying tax on that incomplete structure since the first year, since the time the foundation was poured. The structure is not a house until an address for it is generated, right now, that house has no address, but one is available at the house I was replacing, and is planned to be repurposed as some other use, one without an address.

I don‘t like that I feel I need to spell everything out, but I will.

I have two real, certified, bonefied, approved, stamped, accounted for street addresses that both exist on one single county tax lot, because both addresses were issued by the US Postal Service at a time before there was a Department of Zoning or Building & Safety. I purchased my property with those conditions in place, two addresses, two individual and separated single family dwellings, both are conventional framed. There came a time when I chose to build a new house for my family. There is room for it, it fits, it satisfies all of the county requirements, and is DEQ certified with it’s own separate septic system. The idea is to replace the smallest of the two existing homes, with one that is new, modern, nice, and is designed the way I want it. The end result would be that the address that goes with the smallest home, would go onto that new home, and the old small house could be a guest house, or music studio, or art studio, or storage, or a place to keep chickens. I did not come up with any permanent plan for what to do with that old small house, I only know that the address will go to the new house that replaces it, and the kitchen sink and plumbing at the kitchen will have to be removed. That is all OK and, in Josephine County, we are permitted to remove, remodel, or replace our dwelling units as we see fit as long as all of the county requirements are met, I am replacing an existing house with a different house, one that is built in a different location, on the same property, all of the requirements to do that were met, and were done at a time before the Courts, Zoning Office, Building & Safety, DEQ, Department of Human Services, Department of Health Services, DMV, County Sheriff & Jail, County and State Departments of Forestry, Parks & Recreation, Services for Elderly & Disabled, Water Master, Sewage Treatment Department, The Dog Catcher, and all of the other state and county offices of government were hijacked by the Canadian terror army.

now there is a Department of “Crisis Resolution Center” and “Options of Southern Oregon“. Those places are offices where special circumstance is dealt with by the terror army. Crisis Resolution Center is a place where all of the other county offices can use as a means to develop plans to eliminate problems faced by the Canadian terror army. The CRC and “Options” is operated by Asante Health, and serves as a go-to agency solving problems that the terror occupied county offices may have, such as the presence of Federal Agents in Josephine County. When that happens, CRC is contacted, where a plan is developed, to eliminate the Federal Agents in some way.

So, my plans to replace a small house with a larger one were fouled up by the terror take-over of the county of Josephine, and are further fouled up by the subsequent terror occupation of the entire state of Oregon, and now are completely fouled up because the terror army ran me over with a truck in 2012, and I have a spinal cord injury now. I was a disabled man to start with for other reasons at the time the bastards ran me over, now, I am all different kinds of broken, and will not be able to complete that home on my own within any amount of time.

Very scary place is CRC.

They are the people who are responsible for crafting the most wicked of the killing machines that are used for the mass murder. I will list some, but this post is very dangerous for me, I have absolutely no help when they come as a result of reporting the problems in the only way there is to report, here, on tumblr through a hijacked Centurylink ISP that has all of the phone lines scrambled, the wires in the ground are connected to the wrong terminals in the service boxes that compose the service area. All of them. not just a few phone lines on the wrong terminals, but the entire county was purposefully made to have the Centurylink ISP main map of service, lead investigative people to other addresses than those that the map at Centurylink says they go to.

Contraptions that are managed by CRC include: A steel razor blade slide, about 15 feet tall, is sharp, people forced to ride the slide, is for SAG entertainment for ClubMed Junket members.

Pneumatic Guillotine, is for general use to kill people as they walk through a doorway, is portable, looks like the kind of anti-theft frame that is used at big shopping centers, is a killing machine, motion sensor power Ram driven, runs on 110v outlet.

In the building at CRC there is sometimes a big, glass jar, looks like a 7 foot tall jelly jar w/lid. People are hoisted into the giant jar, there was a naked female in it when I saw it each time. Once in the CRC building near the movie theater off of Union Ave. Two times I have seen that thing while on the I-5, it was on a big rig trailer with a victim naked female inside each time.

There is a giant “Birthday Cake”, is three layers of iron, about 12 feet diameter, looks like a big iron wedding cake, is used with very large construction crane to drop from above onto small groups of people, is for entertainment, there are bleachers where SAG Members sit on to watch the show, the crane is called “Pete’s Dragon“ and says so right on it in big letters. Is a 200 foot crane w/tracks & turret style, yellow. Pete’s Dragon is broken now, I had opportunity to break it, so, it’s broken.

There was a giant size magnifying glass they use in July - August, about 12 feet diameter, about 8 inches thick centrally, is optically correct for a magnifying glass, thin around the edge, is hoisted from a crane, aimed at victims in cars in a parking lot, I saw it at Bi-Mart, and had opportunity to break it, so, it’s broken now.

There is a full size Trebuchet, is used to hurl people downrange, has a “Toledo” brand meat scale built onto it, is used to trim the ammunition to a desired throwing weight, the people are alive when they are thrown, so, it uses live ammunition, is for SAGClubMed Junket entertainment. Josephine County Courts terror cells are able to make very large and precise solid glass objects. That should narrow the source of the glass contraptions down considerably. I suspect that nasa oriented contractor companies could make such large precise glass items.

I also saw two cymbals, musical instrument brass cymbals on a flat car of a train on the train tracks parked at the Blue Star Propane across from The Moose Lodge in Merlin Oregon once. They were standing on edge on the freight car, about 12 feet diameter, I don’t know how they kill, but I am certain they are part of the SAGClubMed Junket.

I saw a giant size killing machine in action at the Denver Colorado International Airport, the new one with that blue horse statue out front. The contraption is part of the building there at the terminal, a recessed area centrally in the building, has escalators and an attendant at each escalator to make sure no SAG members go down there accidentally, they ask everyone “Are you SAG?” and advise those who say “Yes” to go a different way. People go down there, then there is a loud horn sound like the kind at a mine for warning that the thing is about to begin, there are places at the perimeter walls where enormous amount of water suddenly and swiftly is pumped into that recess area, there is a drain, and everyone and everything there goes swirling around and down the drain.

There is at least one cruise ship that has the same thing, is smaller, a swimming pool on the top deck is emptied while people are in the pool. There is some video’s of that one on Twitter that were shown at the start of Corona Virus around February. The news showed a helicopter bringing a very small “Testing Kit” to the boat. They did not show that it is a killing machine, so, you have to have a close look at the layout of the pool and the railings, and just have to figure it out that they are showing a contraption with news about testing kits on a Cruise Boat. A man repelled from a helicopter onto the top deck of a cruise boat, there was a red X on the deck to mark the place where the repel was to happen. The boat is a sparsely featured boat, has a weird vibe, is not a high luxury looking boat like most are, but is big and serves as a cruise boat.

County Court Terror Cell Tax Assessor attack update 11-26-2020 additional info 4:55 pm:

These are two of four photos I just now took of the incomplete house structure project that was stopped due to terror take over of the county, making it too dangerous to continue with the project.

I am not able to send the other two photos I took to my email addy for posting here, the terror bastards all started making a lot of racket around me when someone hiding in the creek saw the I was taking the photos, so, I suspect some local authorities are claiming that the structure of subject is some other buiding someplace else, this is my home project, and the terror army is blocking the text capability to send the other two photos from the phone to the email, it’s the only way I can retrieve the photos from the phone, and they shut that feature off, by putting a bug in the cell phone that makes it think the outgoing text messages are too full, preventing the text photos from being sent. So, for now, I have these two I can show that were taken today, or, I can show others that were taken at some other time in the past, but that won’t work for explaining anything, the photo needs to be fresh. I’ll try again later to show the front and other side, you are seeing the southwest side, and the back of the house, the southeast side. The house is situated in reverse of the road front, where the back of the house is nearest the Jackpine, because my property is arranged that I have my own cul-de-sac.

I have been refraining from showing that building for fear of terror soldiers doing harm, or making it easier for them to find my home, but, by now, all of the terror already knows where I live, the only people who don‘t know are the nsa fools who keep trusting the local authorities.

And this is the front, faces northwest.

Approximately 2,600 Square feet, two story home, has three bedrooms, two and one-half bathrooms w/laundry.

Is not done, you see the white vapor barrier is getting old, there are no railing on the wrap around porch and the lumber I already had cut for most of that has rotted away from exposure over too much time stacked up in the rain and sun. In fact there is about ten thousand dollars worth of lumber outside that has rotted because I had what I needed to continue at the time the assassins began to show up everyday, so, all of that is ruined from exposure.

There are doors and windows on it, the doors were the last thing I was able to do, and I had to dodge the terror bastards to put them on in 2010ish.

The walls inside are not covered, just the wall frame is there. Some insulation is in upstairs, and the subfloor insulation is there, but most is not installed, I have all of the insulation necessary for the building, but it’s too dangerous to do work there.

All of the rough plumbing is done and inspected, signed off. Some electric is upstairs, most is not installed.

There are no finished surfaces anywhere on that structure. There are no fixtures installed anywhere, everything is still in rough frame condition.

Good news is the doors and windows are installed.

That is all I am willing to share about that. I suspect that some other structure is being shown to US nsa somewhere to discount the reports of terror that I make here, in some way.

7:05 pm 11-26-2020 other reminder: What I said above about the Denver Airport is real. I explained some of what I remember from seeing the thing do what it does. Screen Actor Guild has it worked out where the enormity of their Union, and the nature of their professions of entertainment where they are free to create wild and complex ways to entertain the public, are used as cover for the mass killing that they do.

That contraption is a SAG product, concocted by a very sick group of people who have way too much money, and have been spoiled with a lifetime of entitlements to get away scott free even when they are caught red handed doing crime. The perpetuation over time of ever increasing complexity within the movie plots, stories, screenplays, has spilled over from the movie screen into real life, so much so, that they were able to incorporate a giant size toilet into the design of the Denver Airport for murder of travelers who use the airport.

Eye-witnesses see the thing working, they see a flood, and people swept away inside the building at the airport, but when they call 911 Emergency no matter what city they call from, this is the report: “Hi, yeah.... uhhh, I just saw a horrible thing, at the airport, .... the water came out of the wall... a lot of water.. it was fast and the people... those poor people couldn‘t get out of the way, they all just.... disappeared... were gone. Then the water was all gone. There were police all over the place... but... they just watched. Please help.”

The contraption is so real, no one will believe that it’s there long enough to understand that even if someone sent a few investigators to have a look, the enormity of that installation and the money and power that those people at SAG have, is exactly the reason why you cannot expect that a small team of investigators will survive that inspection. Too Big To Fail is more than handing out billions of dollars from the treasury, Too Big To Fail is a social condition that happens when the terror is so enormous that only an army can stop it, and that army needs to be there to see it work, not just four guys looking for a plumbing leak.

The eye-witnesses are rarely taken seriously. If they are listened too,  the 911 emergency is the wrong agency, are not equipped for that kind of investigation, and certainly cannot stop the thing without an army. You have to consider the number of people who built it, planned it, approved it, funded it, inspected it, tested it, and protect it’s existence at the airport.

How to Use Craigslist to Buy and Sell in Your Local Area

Craigslist is ancient in terms of websites. The site was created in 1995 by a guy named Craig Newmark (hence the site’s name). It started as an email distribution list Newmark put together to share local events and then became a website to share classified ads. 

Since its inception, Craigslist has hosted millions of classified ads for jobs, housing, and a multitude of things for sale. Countless people have used the site to buy, sell, find jobs, hire people, and even get dates (although the personal ads are no longer a part of the site). 

If you go to the site now, it feels like going back in time. The design is straightforward, and the team behind Craigslist has made a point to keep things basic and not focus on making it as profitable as possible. That makes Craigslist unique compared to other classified sites and is probably one of the reasons it has stuck around for so long. Sometimes less is more.

While some sites have popped up recently to compete with Craigslist, it is still a thriving marketplace used by millions of people.

If you know what you’re doing, you can make good money flipping things on the site, or find great deals on the stuff you need.

How to Sell on Craigslist

To list something on Craigslist, head over to the home page and click “create a posting” in the top left corner of the page. 

Having an account is not required to create a posting.

If you’re not sure the item you want to sell is allowed on Craigslist, check out this page before going any further.

Select your preferred location and what type of posting you want to create. For most things you sell, you will need to select “for sale by owner.” That will take you to the page where you choose the category for the item you want to sell. 

Once you select the category, it will take you to the listing page.

On this page, you will fill out all of the information about your item. Some of the data is optional, but you have to fill out the title, description, zip code, and email address. You can choose to keep your email private if you wish.

Titles are Important

In your title, try to be descriptive and include as many relevant keywords as possible, so your item will show up in more search results. 

For example, let’s say you’re selling a 1979 Gibson Les Paul Custom Electric Guitar that is tobacco sunburst color, and you have the case you’re putting with it. Instead of just making the title “Gibson electric guitar with the case,” make it “1979 Gibson Les Paul Custom Electric Guitar Tobacco Sunburst + Case”.

You get 70 characters for the listing title, and if you can fill it up with relevant keywords, your item will be v more people.

Use the Description to Make the Sale

You can add 1,000 characters in the description, so this is where you want to convince buyers why they should buy your item. Don’t make the listing sound better than it is, but try your best to make the sale sound like a great deal. 

Write a short story of how you’ve used the item and how it has worked for you. Make it sound like you hate to let it go, and the only reason you’re getting rid of it is that you need the money. 

The more you can make the description sound like the item is incredible, the better chance you’ll have of making more money and selling it quickly. 

In addition to making a great sales pitch in the description, be very detailed with what the offer in the listing includes. Also, list any defects the item may have. If you can make the buyer feel like they know everything they need to know about the item by reading your description, they’ll be more confident to reach out and possibly purchase from you.

When it comes to pricing the item, I always price it a little higher than what I really want because people will try to negotiate you down. If I need $100 for something, I may list it at $125, so when the buyer asks if I’ll take $100, I’ll get the price I want while making the buyer feel like they’re getting a deal.

What Optional Information Should You Provide?

On top of the required information, you can also provide some optional details if you want. Depending on the item category, you will have the option to provide things like the make/manufacturer, model number, measurements, and condition. 

There are also options like “cryptocurrency ok,” “delivery available,” “include more ads by this seller link,” as well as a place to include your phone number and address.

You can fill out as much or as little of this information as you want, but I would be cautious about including my home address. I would fill out all of the item specific options, though, so the listing is as complete as possible. 

A lot of people will want to reach you by text, so you may want to include your phone number in the listing.

Once you have everything filled out, click continue. That will bring you to a page to enter a location. If you want to meet the buyer at a specific location, you can enter the address. Otherwise, you can just enter the city and zip code and click continue.

Pictures are Worth a Thousand Words

After you click continue on the location page, you will add images. Pictures actually aren’t required on Craigslist, but not adding them is a big mistake. When people shop online, they want to see what the item looks like before committing to buy it. 

While you want to describe the item as best as you can in the title and description, the images are most likely what the buyer will use to decide if they want the item.

If you have a modern smartphone, it should be all you need to take great photos. Use natural lighting if possible, and don’t have anything in the background. You want the pictures to focus on the item only, not that pile of clutter you’ve been meaning to pick up.

If I were trying to sell this guitar, this would be a terrible picture to use!

Much better.

Once you’ve taken quality photos of the item that shows how it looks in real life, and any defects, upload the best image first. The first image will be the one featured on the listing, and then you can add up to 23 others for a total of 24 shots. 24 is a lot of pictures, but the more you add, the better! 

You want to make it feel like the buyer is holding the item in their hands.

Publish and Wait

After you upload all the images, you’re officially done with the listing! Once you click continue, it will take you to a review page so you can make sure everything is how you want it. Then, all you have to do is publish. 

When you hit publish, you will be sent an email with a link. You must click the link in the email for your listing to be verified and become active. You will also use this link to manage your listing if you need to make any changes or delete it once the item sales. 

Your listing will stay live for 45 days, and you will have to renew it if it doesn’t sell within that time.

And now we wait. Depending on the contact method you chose, you will start getting responses to the listing either through email or your phone. 

Now all you have to do is respond to people who reach out, and if someone wants your item, determine a time and place to do the transaction. Due to safety concerns, it’s best to meet in a busy public area. You may even ask the buyer to meet at your local police station if it’s nearby.  

How to Buy on Craigslist

Buying on Craigslist is pretty straightforward. All you have to do is go to the site, click the category you want to search in, or click “all for sale” and either scroll through the listings or enter a search term in the search bar to narrow the listings down. 

Once you find an item you’re interested in, contact the seller through their chosen contact method and see if the item is still available. Sometimes sellers forget to delete the listing after the item has sold. If the item is still available, figure out when and where you can meet the seller to purchase it. Just like when you sell an item, you’ll want to meet in a safe location.

Buying on Craigslist may sound like a lot of work compared to shopping at your local retail stores or on places like Amazon, where the item will be shipped right to your door. The beauty of Craigslist, though, is that you can find great things at a fraction of what you’d pay elsewhere. 

You might even find something for free! 

I got a bunch of for free tile off Craigslist, and it would have cost me several hundred dollars if I had bought the same tile at a store. We ended up not using the tile, and I sold it for $200. Not a bad profit, and you may be able to replicate this process in your area to resell things and make some money! Or just get great deals on items you need to buy anyways.

How to Stay Safe When Dealing With Strangers on Craigslist

Buying and selling on Craigslist can work out great, but there are some things to be mindful of when using the platform.

The main things to keep in mind are to watch out for scams and fraud, as well as staying safe when meeting people.

When it comes to scams and fraud keep these things in mind:

Do not provide payment to anyone you have not met in person.

Beware offers involving shipping – deal with locals you can meet in person.

Never wire funds (e.g., Western Union) – anyone who asks you to is a scammer.

Don’t accept cashier/certified checks or money orders – banks cash fakes, then hold you responsible.

Transactions are between users only. No third party provides a “guarantee.”

Never give out financial info (bank account, social security, PayPal account, etc.).

Do not rent or purchase sight-unseen—that amazing “deal” may not exist.

Refuse background/credit checks until you have met the landlord/employer in person.

“Craigslist voicemails” – Any message asking you to access or check “Craigslist voicemails” or “Craigslist voice messages” is fraudulent – no such service exists.

Here’s what Craigslist has to say on their safety page about meeting people in person:

insist on a public meeting place like a cafe, bank, or shopping center.

Do not meet in a secluded place, or invite strangers into your home.

Be especially careful buying/selling high-value items.

Tell a friend or family member where you’re going.

Take your cell phone along if you have one.

Consider having a friend accompany you.

Trust your instincts.

As long as you stick to these guidelines, you should be fine! Lots of people are worried about their safety when it comes to dealing with Craigslist, but the amount of violent crimes associated with the site is minimal.

Now that you know how to buy and sell safely, it’s time to get on Craigslist and make some money or hunt for those deals.

I've spent a few weeks on the phone since it was unveiled, and it has impressed me more than any other Oppo phone before. This is due to advances in software and design. It's not perfect, but it's the first Oppo phone that I can confidently recommend. Here's why.

Oppo's decision to make the Find X2 Pro more conventional is the right one. I miss the madness of the Find X and other Find series phones as much as the next tech fan, but they weren't always practical. The Find X2 looks normal, maybe to the point where it feels derived from the front. However, the orange vegan leather back wall and gold accents prove that Oppo's design department still knows how to party.

The beautifully curved 6.7-inch OLED screen falls off to the side, but not to the extent that you see on the Huawei Mate 30 Pro. It's a more subtle, shallow drop that still offers an impressive viewing experience. Oppo's light effect notifications use the curved glass to warn you and display colored light when you receive a call or new message. It stands out, keeps you up to date and looks cool.

A golden aluminum case is located between the front window and the vegan leather back. It's smooth and gently curved so it won't get into your palm while the leather back feels warm. The Oppo Find X2 Pro is a pleasure to hold.

The leather has no heavy grain and only the slightest texture, but it is easy to grip. The phone never feels like it's slipping out of your hand. Whether the gold and orange color scheme is appealing depends on your personal choice. If it is too gaudy, a black ceramic model is available. Personally, I love the orange leather, but I don't like the chintzy gold, and the Oppo badge looks like an afterthought.

The leather model is slightly thicker and heavier than the black ceramic Find X2 Pro. With a thickness of 9.5 mm and 200 grams, it is a fairly large phone, especially compared to the feather-light Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus with a thickness of 186 grams and a thickness of 7.8 mm. It's still pluggable and never feels unwieldy, but is slightly top-heavy. The design, the high-quality materials and the processing as well as the excellent comfort in the hand make the Find X2 a mature and desirable phone.

Oppo has put a lot of technology into the Find X2 Pro's screen, and it really pays off. The 6.7-inch OLED offers a refresh rate of 120 Hz, a resolution of 3168 x 1440, 240 Hz touch sampling, 10-bit color and HDR10 + support as well as the so-called O1 Ultra Vision Engine to optimize the Video performance. The Oppo Find X2 competes strongly with the Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus and the Apple iPhone 11 Pro, two powerful mobile phones with breathtaking screens.

The Find X2 offers numerous options for changing the screen, including adjusting the color temperature and color mode, as well as the ability to turn off the O1 Ultra Vision Engine if you don't like motion smoothing or HDR upscaling. If the color temperature is set to the standard setting, the O1 Ultra Vision Engine and the color mode to Vivid, it hardly differs from the S20 Plus in direct comparison. Black is deep, shadows look perfect, colors are vivid and strong and details are sharp. It is a stunning screen with numerous adjustments if you wish.

The Find X2 Pro, which is also equipped with Dolby Atmos support, features two full-range stereo speakers. The speakers have a lot of volume, and Atmos also adds an extra dimension, but the phone lacks bass and can sound harsh when you turn up the volume.

During the first few days of use, I was concerned that the screen was not responding slightly, which was contrary to the 240 Hz touch sampling function. On my early test model, a screen protector was attached that was lifted up at one corner, eliminating the feeling of lag. I should also mention the phone's haptic feedback, which is wonderfully soft and tactile and comes very close to the excellent vibrations of the OnePlus 7T Pro.

Camera quality

The oversized camera on the back of the Find X2 Pro, which is held in gold, has a 48-megapixel Sony IMX689 1 / 1.4-inch main sensor with an aperture of 1: 1.7 and a second 48-megapixel -Sony IMX586 ultra-wide sensor and a 13 megapixel telephoto lens for a 2x optical zoom as well as a 5x and 10x hybrid setting and up to 60x digital recording. There is double optical image stabilization, live HDR for video and a macro mode as well as an auto focus with laser and phase detection.

The camera app looks familiar if you've recently used a Huawei phone. From the zoom controls to the menu selection, the layout of the app is strikingly similar. I took pictures before and after an important software update and liked a lot of pictures of both. The camera takes colorful and detailed photos that approach a cooler palette than a Samsung camera. The atmosphere of mobile phones like the Huawei P40 Pro can also be missing.

There's a noticeable difference in dynamics between the standard 48-megapixel lens (Sony's new IMX689 sensor) and the wide-angle IMX586, which weakens the colors. However, if you enable Oppo's "Dazzle" color mode, which uses artificial intelligence to enhance your images, the level of saturation will be increased to compensate for this. Edge detection in portrait mode is average and sometimes difficult to recognize even the simplest shapes. However, the large sensor creates a decent natural bokeh when there is an object nearby.

On the front is a 32 megapixel selfie camera in a small hole that offers both a beauty mode and a night mode. This unusual addition to the selfie camera is surprisingly effective and does a good job of reducing noise in low light, but processing time is long. However, I can see that it is useful for many people. Otherwise, the selfie camera has numerous filters and a decent portrait mode.

The Oppo Find X2 Pro's camera is excellent. It's versatile, has great zoom and lots of useful features, and delivers strong photo results whether you're using the front or rear camera. It is reliable and capable.

Software and performance

Software is a traditional weakness of Oppo phones, and previous versions of ColorOS (the company's Android user interface) were filled with frustrating changes to normal Android features.

Fortunately, Oppo changed course. The Oppo Find X2 Pro ships with ColorOS v7.1 via Android 10. It is more modern and uses clean storage much better to improve usability. The user interface is similar to Android on a Google Pixel 4 phone in that menus and icons look consistent and are where you expect them to be. Thanks to the screen with a refresh rate of 120 Hz, it is also quick and smooth.

The importance of this cannot be overstated. Daily use of the Find X2 Pro is more of a pleasure than a duty, since almost no matter which phone you come from, no steep learning curve is required after switching. The constantly active screen is helpful and clearly shows notification symbols. I also like the system-wide dark mode.

It's not all good news, and the problems I've had with the Oppo Reno 3 Pro are present, e.g. B. the useless Smart Assistant that you wipe from the home screen. However, since Oppo fixed other issues, these are disappointments in an otherwise solid user interface.

The phone has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor and an X55 5G modem as well as 12 GB RAM and 512 GB storage space. Going through two benchmark tests gave these results.

Geekbench 5: 901 single-core / 3266 multi-core

This is the fastest Qualcomm processor available and has a large amount of RAM, so the Find X2 Pro never lacks the performance. The results have driven it forward in tests with the Exynos-based Galaxy S20 Plus and with phones with the Snapdragon 855 Plus such as the Asus ROG Phone 2.

I had some problems with calls. Although the reception was strong according to the symbol and was not technical, I often had problems hearing the caller and vice versa. It seemed like I was in an area with poor coverage and disruption before I reconnect. The problem only occurred with Find X2 Pro. It was intermittent, so not every call was affected, suggesting that it was a software problem.

Battery life

The Find X2 Pro has a built-in fingerprint sensor and a face release, both of which work very well. Face recognition usually beats faster than the fingerprint sensor. A 4,260 mAh battery, which is actually two 2,130 mAh cells that work together, provides the juice. This setup helps the Oppo SuperVOOC Flash Charge 2.0 fast charging system to work and keep temperatures low.

The battery is quickly charged with the supplied 65 W charger. In just 30 minutes in my repeated tests, it shot from 0 to 100%, which essentially makes overnight charging unnecessary. Charge the phone when you get ready in the morning, and it's done before you're done. Unfortunately there is no wireless charging.

I watched approximately 3.5 hours of 1080p video, which drained about 35% of the battery, and the phone took a day of moderate use.

Price, availability and guarantee

The Oppo Find X2 Pro costs £ 1,100 and can currently be ordered from Amazon in the US for $ 1,300. It will be released in May. You can register interest on the phone through the Carphone Warehouse retailer website. However, there is no information yet about which network operators will sell the phone. Oppo does not sell its devices in the United States, but it may be possible to import one. Oppo grants a two year warranty on the device and the battery.

Our opinion

The Find X2 Pro is Oppo at its best. It offers the performance we expect from a flagship phone, without the inconvenience of previous Find models and yet enough individuality to respond. The screen is stunning, the camera is excellent and the software has improved a lot compared to old models.

All of this at a high price that puts Oppo in the same space as Samsung, Apple and Huawei. That is rightly so, but it remains to be seen whether Oppo has the brand name to attract at this level.

Is there a better alternative?

There are a lot of phones out now, and some will be coming very soon to take on the Oppo Find X2 Pro. The Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus for $ 1,000 is strong with very good software, a great camera, and one of the best screens available. However, the design is boring compared to the Find X2 Pro. The $ 1,400 Galaxy S20 Ultra and its 108-megapixel camera also come into play at this price.

The Huawei P40 Pro costs £ 900, which is about $ 1,115. Therefore, it will be offered at a competitive price when it is released in April. The design is more mature than that of the Find X2 Pro, and the camera has great potential, but the lack of Google Mobile Services puts it at a disadvantage in the UK. If you're not fixated on buying an Android phone, the Apple iPhone 11 for $ 1,000 Pro is our top choice for the year to date.

I also like the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus for $ 1,100, which is a little older, but is still an excellent smartphone. One to watch out for in the near future is the OnePlus 8 series. OnePlus is part of the same business conglomerate as Oppo and will launch its new phones on April 15th. There is every chance that OnePlus 8 Pro will take over the Find X2 Pro at a cheaper price.

How long it will take?

With IP68 water resistance, the phone stays relatively safe in the wet, and the version with leather back should stay attractive longer because it has no fingerprints or can break like a glass back. Ceramic is tougher and more scratch-resistant than glass if you choose the black version.

Oppo's track record with Android updates isn't great. The original Find X, the RX17 Pro and the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom are expected to receive ColorOS 7 and Android 10 in summer 2020. Android 10 was released in September 2019. If you buy the Find X2 Pro, you can wait a while for an update to Android 11.

Should you buy one?

Yes. The stunning screen, excellent photo functions, fast charging and 5G for future security ensure that the Find X2 Pro will serve you well every day for several years.

What Makes The Insta360 GO Different?

I must admit, I was somewhat skeptical when Insta360 reached out to tell me they were launching an action cam. It doesn’t have any 360 or VR features?! It’s literally just an action cam? But I couldn’t have been more wrong. Here’s what makes the Insta360 GO simply magical:

One-button recording. The Insta360 GO is designed primarily to capture short video clips, of 14-30 seconds long. Just press the single button on the back of the device (or just press the whole camera when it’s mounted on your pendant), and it’ll wake up, start recording, then shut down after the time elapses. It’s ridiculously easy to use.

FlowState Stabilization. With a wide-angle lens and on-board gyroscope, Insta360 has brought its incredible stabilization technology to this tiny device. Your footage will be super smooth, no matter what crazyness you’re getting up to. It looks amazing, and it’s all seamless and automatic. Shoot at any angle, it doesn’t matter, it’ll come out the right way (unless of course you wanted it upside down, then you can rotate it during editing).

Video templates and AI editing. Of course, you’re free to export the individual clips and edit in whatever software you like, but most people will want to use the built-in templates. These give you the music, the shot list, ready-made transitions, and everything is timed to the beat. Just pick the shots you want, and let the software do the rest. It took about ten minutes to manually put together the demo video in the review. If that’s too much though, there’s even a one-click AI FlashCut feature, that picks your shots for you.

Hyperlapses made easy. Compress a long walk along the beach or around the city into a minute of video using super smooth hyperlapse techniques. No additional editing required: just long press to activate the camera, then double press to start shooting.

Insta360 Go Specs and Design

Inside the box, you’ll find a smorgasbord of accessories and mounting bits.

As well as the Insta360 Go, which weighs 18.6 grams and is barely bigger than a finger, you’ll find a combined charging and connector case.

The Insta360 GO snaps magnetically into the top and begins charging immediately. At the base of the charging case, you’ll find a block of rubber, which protects a Lightning plug. This entire case plugs directly into your iPhone for transferring files. A USB-C to micro-USB adaptor is included for Android users, though at launch this device is iOS only. A micro-USB port on the side of the case is used for charging.

The GO is as minimal as it can be. There are no ports, and only a single button on the back. A set of pogo pins provide all the charging and connectivity the device needs when sat in the charging case. The single button initiates recording.

The magnetic pendant will be your most typical use case. Simply hang it around your neck–the height is adjustable–and snap the Insta360 GO on. It’s very discreet and works over a single layer of clothing like a t-shirt or dress.

If that’s not quite suitable, the magnetic clip mount might be your next choice. Don’t worry about orienting the camera on its side–the gyroscope will automatically flip your footage the right way up, using Insta360’s incredible FlowState Stabilization technology.

You also get a tripod mount case. Again, the Insta360 magnetically snaps into place. The case adds a standard tripod screw at the bottom, which you can attach a tripod, selfie stick, or any of your other favorite mounts. Alternatively, you can use the included stick mount. This screws into the tripod mount, and includes a reusable sticky pad. You can adjust the angle of tilt, too.

If all that still doesn’t do it for you, a simple magnetic and sticky pad should do the job with any flat surface. You really should be able to mount the Insta360 Go anywhere with minimal effort; everything you could possibly need is included in the box.

Video Templates and AI FlashCut

After plugging the charging case into your phone, the Insta360 app analyzes your footage and attempts use AI to match specific types of shots. Head over to the Stories tab, and choose a theme. The app can then pick out the best shots and mix them into the chosen video template with a single tap on the FlashCut button.

At launch, it seems to recognize:

Since I tested in the countryside, don’t tend to take pictures of my food, and rarely smile, the FlashCut feature was less useful for me. Over time I expect it’ll be trained on more content types, but you’re free to use as much or as little of the FlashCut feature as you like. You can always use it to populate a story, then go in and tweak some of the clips if you didn’t quite like the output. It’s magical to watch it work though, and I think some people (those weirdos that tend to smile a lot, for instance), will love the feature.

Pick a theme, watch a preview, then press FlashCut. Congratulations, you’ve just made a compilation video.

Even if you don’t the FlashCut feature at all, it’s still effortless to put together an impressive video. If you stick to the pre-built templates, all you need to is pick the shot, then slide it back and forth until you find the desired bit of the clip.

During testing, the range of templates has been limited, but more are promised at launch and beyond. Those we tested with varied in clip lengths from half a second–obviously designed for a younger audience with the attention span of a gnat–to a more glacial seven seconds. Some are designed specifically for certain types of shots (a compilation of smiles, a set of hyperlapses around a city), but most can be used generically with any kind of clip. The editing process felt a lot like iMovie Trailers, but even easier.

You can tweak all aspects of a template if you’re inclined, though I found the defaults worked great. You can opt for a square output for Instagram, or a more traditional 16:9 format. The camera itself shoots videos at a resolution of 2720 pixels square, but after stabilization, videos are output at a maximum 1080p full HD. Yes, this isn’t 4K, but it’s more than enough for mobile, where the majority of online video is consumed now.

Lifelogging Makes a Comeback?

The unique magnetic pendant mount and sheer ease of capturing a moment reminds me of the “lifelogging” camera craze from a few years back. These devices were designed to capture your entire day, then pick out the highlights. Of course, they didn’t last: the idea of a camera that captured your every moment was an obvious invasion of privacy. But on top of that, who wants to review a day worth of footage to find the best bits?

The Insta360 GO is completely unobtrusive, and only captures the moments you want. It’s an everything camera: for lifelogging, travel blogging, action sports, or just random family moments.

Battery Life

The biggest drain on the charging case appears to be transferring files. The charging case battery ran out after a week of testing, midway through transferring a large hyperlapse video. The file wasn’t damaged, but since the charging case doesn’t siphon power from your phone, you’ll need to plug it in and charge before you can finish transferring files. Since the case automatically tops up the Insta360 GO whenever it’s placed inside, the camera itself never run out of power, and had some residual battery when the case itself ran out, so I could still keep shooting while the case recharged.

Should You Buy an Insta360 GO?

Ultimately, video cameras are designed to capture a moment. That sounds patently obvious, but any barriers either due to inherently bad hardware design, or difficulty of use, will stop you from achieving that. We probably all have an action camera or two sitting in a drawer of dead electronics. It’s never charged, it needs all manner of complicated mounting options, it’s an effort to start shooting, and after all that, you’ve got to think about how to edit the footage together in a neat way. I’m certainly guilty of that. Most of the time I can’t even bothered to pull out my phone and film something. That’s like, at least three clicks.

The Insta360 GO is the action cam anyone can use, even those of us who are incredibly lazy. The one-click shooting is absolutely effortless. Take as many shots as you want. Plug it into your phone, and let the automatic transfer do its magic. Even if you ignore the AI FlashCut features, picking ten or twenty clips for a ready-made template shouldn’t take more than ten minutes. And that’s it: you’ve got a publishable video of holiday memories to throw on your Instagram feed. It looks professional, it’s in-time to the beat, and you’re free to spend more time enjoying yourself. Even if you’re not the type of person that regular skydives, rides a rollercoaster, or visits exquisite Asian temples on the weekend, I think you’ll still get a lot of use from this adorable camera.

I’ve included Underwood in this collection of fast loading WordPress themes, but I’ve got to admit, the demo isn’t set up perfectly, so you’ll have to take the load test with a grain of salt.  They need to serve scaled images to make their site load even faster but considering the load time without that feature, this is a quick loading theme.

Underwood is a great looking, simple and effective blog theme with WooCommerce support too.  It’s a good choice if you’re looking for a fast loading, SEO friendly theme for almost any type of blog or business website.

This theme is called Ariva and it’s fast as can be since it’s a text based theme. I sort of think the name is a play on the Spanish word arriba, which literally means above.  Why does that have anything to do with being fast?  Well in the cartoon Speedy Gonzales, that’s one of the things he says.

¡Arriba, arriba! ¡Ándale, ándale!  = Go, go! Come on, come on!

Side note, anybody think that cartoon could get made today?  Me neither.  The point is, these themes that don’t have images always load very quickly.  Text takes just a fraction of the time that an image takes to load.  If you have a text based theme, it’s certainly worth considering.

So, here’s the results from Pingdom.

That’s pretty darned fast.  Of course, the lack of images helps and only 16 requests on the home page is relatively few.  If you value speed over all else, it’s certainly worth a shot.

WooCommerce ready, responsive, fast loading and attractive, I think this theme could do the trick for a lot of writers.

Tabor

This is a picture of Tabor, a super-fast loading WordPress theme by ThemeBeans.  If you want a simple, very stripped down theme and performance is all you’re really into, this is a definite option for you.  ThemeBeans has removed anything that wasn’t absolutely required from this theme and it shows in the load times.  Check this out.

There’s a little bit of housekeeping they could do to really improve their performance grade, but that load time and low request total is tough to beat.  What they failed to do is combine some CSS files, which would probably bring them up into the mid 90s for performance grade.  Tabor offers integration with all the ‘must have’ plugins, social media integration too.  So, bloat free, compatible with all the plugins you need to run a professional website and simple and attractive too, that’s what Tabor is all about.

SEO WP

From the Great White North comes a fast loading, SEO optimized theme called SEO WP.  That’s about as simple and basic a name as you can get and this theme follows through by removing all code bloat so that this theme loads up lightning fast, which is a Google ranking factor.  That’s a really nice thing to have.  Clean, creative andbeautiful, this theme is great for promoting products, for marketing your digital agency and throwing a spotlight on what your company does.

Okay, so, here’s a look at the Pingdom report.

Very fast indeed.  I love this theme’s flat design, it’s really ideal for online marketing where you want your theme to look good, but not get in the way of your content.  SEO WP is full responsive, it’s easy to customize it and the code is immaculate.  Compatible with Facebook, Gravity Forms, Easy Digital Downloads, WooCommerce, Foundation…the list goes on an on.

My car was rear ended while parked in front of my house and insurance has declared it a total loss. We have been going back and forth on the value of the car and have finally gotten them to a value that we agree with but we disagree with how much they are taking off for previous damage to the car. There was a dent to the left fender and a scrape on the right back door, Farmers is saying it would cost $1100 to repair which is close to some of the estimates I have gotten from body shops. But they are not depreciating that value down for a used car. We were going through Safeco as well and they were taking 40% of the cost to make those repairs and deducting it from the value. Hello everyone, I am an international student who's been in the USA (Buffalo, NY) for the past 2 years working hard on my masters (i'm 25 now). I bought a POS Saturn last year for 2000 dollars and, well, for that i needed to get car insurance since it's mandatory in this country. Since i was from abroad and i had a learner's permit at the time, i had to get insurance with my international license. Progressive was my only choice so i paid around 700$ for 6 months. That's the rate I've been paying for the last year. Unfortunately, i just don't have the money anymore to pay 700 more dollars for the next 6 months. I tried different insurance companies but they are all around the same range. Apparently, i was stupid enough to not get a credit card as soon as i landed in this country. I was raised with the if you don't have money, don't spend it philosophy so i just used my debit card. This is the only reason that i can see for these absurd rates. Every single one of my friends ( all international students ) pay around 200-250/six months dollars for their pieces of crap cars. I just feel like i'm not being given a fair deal. Not having any credit might put a penalty on me, i understand somewhat how a capitalist mind works... let's say about 100-150 more dollars for 6 months, but a whopping 500 $ ? Don't you think it's kind of messed up that first of all it's mandatory, and then there's no baseline to at least make sure that noone gets ripped off. When I started learning to drive at 17, I decided to buy my self a cheap car so that I'd be able to get more experience behind the wheel, pass my test quicker and have a car as soon as I passed my test. I was insured on my provisional license with an insurance company which specialised in learner drivers. However, I ended up getting 3 points on my license the week before I passed my test, in what I still think were pretty unfair circumstances. My house doesn't have a drive or a garage and so I had to park my car on the road in front of my house, or on a street round the corner when there were no spaces. As it was my first car I was really excited, and without understanding that I could get in trouble for it, I used to sometimes sit in my car and listen to music with my friends. The week before I passed my test we were sat chatting when a police car came down the road and pulled up behind us. Someone had broken into some allotments nearby and they were questioning us as to if we had seen anything. They searched my car- for tools that could suggest we had done it I presume, and when they found nothing they ran my license and obviously realised I only had a provisional license. I still at this point didn't realise I had done anything wrong, I wasn't driving the car, simply sat in it so I didn't realise I had committed an offence. The police informed me that because the engine was running, I could have been driving or about to drive and on that basis they convicted me for driving without a license. I only got 3 points and a 60 fine due to the fact I wasn't actually driving and at the time I accepted that with relief, I was terrified I'd get a ban or lose my license or get a massively unaffordable fine. I could have appealed but that would have meant going to court and I was only 17 and that terrified me. I declared the points to my insurance company straght away, but due to the nature of the offence my insurance was invalidated and void. I've only just now realised how serious having insurance voided in the past is. I'm supposed to be moving a 5 hours away in a few months for a job, and I have plenty of money saved for car insurance and a car, as without a car, the move is completely unrealistic. Without a car I won't be able to get to work as the hours are unsocial and my job isn't very well connected with public transport at all and so relying on public transport or taxis is simply not an option. I found a car, went to get an insurance quote, and found out that getting insurance is practically impossible when you've had insurance voided in the past. The points don't seem to be a problem, when I tell companies about my points but not about my insurance voided in the past they happily give me a quote. They're expensive, but affordable and it's what I was expecting. However, as soon as I tell them that my insurance was voided in the past they refuse to even give me a quote. I'm completely out of options and I don't know what to do. I need a car, but I can't get insurance as much as I try. I know I was in the wrong, but it seems like the voided insurance is more of a punishment than the points are and surely that isn't right? And the voided insurance will stay with me for the rest of my life, so does that mean that driving will never be an option for me? I'm sorry for the essay, I just really don't know what to do! I was in an accident three weeks ago. It was the other car's fault. There were no injuries. We didn't call the police, but I got a written statement from the other driver admitting fault.
