I am SO EXCITED FOR THIS PROJECT
this thing is gonna kick absolute ass
all this time painstakingly working with my least favorite ring size is really gonna pay off I think!
I'll have to pivot ever so slightly because of the pins I just got in the mail, but overall it looks exactly how I was hoping it would :D

Interaction and Play Week 5
We talked about having four different paths leading into the center of Aotea Square based around the Maori history set in Aotea Square. Since the square was built with the Maori Marae being its inspiration, we decided to remain with this key aspect and re-think our Taniwha idea, further research has shown there may be an outrage as the Taniwha has been bought up in political topics. Photos 1,3,4 above show the starting points of the paths with the center in the middle and photo 2 shows the middle looking out to the last corner.
These four paths represent the Four Walls of Wellbeing; a Maori philosophy otherwise known as Hauora. Each of the walls represents a ‘dimension of health,’
The physical path ( Taha Tinana ) - which would guide the explorer through the history of Aotea Square. - Example being building blocks
The social path ( Taha Whanau ) - The social culture in this place, both past and present. - Example being Old Aotea’s Statue
The mental path ( Taha Hinengaro ) - Express their experiences with Aotea Square in creative ways. - Example being our Emotion Totem
The spiritual path ( Taha Wairua ) - which is all about faith and Maori beliefs. - Example being our Hidden Message Lens
Tumblr media
The Path Aim:
1. Give the audience the Marae feeling and experience
2. Get the audience to participate
3. Aesthetically appealing
4. ‘Swappable’ Art.
Ben suggested we make the art inside the see-through boxes upon each end ‘swappable.’ He suggested we involve local artists and let them interpret ‘taniwha’ and ‘old Aotea Square’ however they want.
Katriel’s update: Another option was to have - rather than Aotea Square replicas in one of the boxes all of the time - artwork featuring other significant historical places around the area e.g. an old Maori war-zone, an old pa (settlement) etc. This would of course require some research, though it wouldn’t necessarily be our research. Rather, the artists themselves would be sharing their knowledge and findings through their work.
We’re strayed away a little from the taniwha (which is now just a part of our overall theme) and moved towards the past VS the present in Aotea Square. After all, bringing up the taniwha as the main theme and allowing Aotea Square to gain something from that narrative may actually rub a sore spot seeing as there was a lot of controversy around Horotiu and the construction of the area.
So this is what we’re hoping to have to present next week (suggested by Ben):
An overall site proposal (showing the layout of what we want to do with the space).
A description or prototype of one artefact from each pathway as well as the centerpiece (the seesaw).
A description of what it’s like to go down one pathway.
Tumblr media
Physical - a table of blocks which if arranged correctly will make up a picture. Most likely of Aotea square as the Taniwha is a no go zone
Mental - a pillar where participants can attach notes with written memories and experiences around Aotea Square, or a piece of timber where people can throw colors on to it depending on what theyre feeling
Spiritual - based on faith and the idea of discovering what cannot be seen, Isaac suggested having hidden pictures in a specially made puzzle that can only be seen through a provided red lens. “KAT’s discription’
Social - The old Aotea Monument that became known as a skate rink to the local and distant skaters

Free Printable Patriotic Party Pack
‘Tis the season for fireworks and barbecues! Between Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day, my favorite way to commemorate the summer holiday season is with some good grilled food followed by fireworks with my favorite people.
Around this time of year there is no shortage of red, white and blue plates, napkins, cups, etc., but for this month's collaboration with Canon, we’ve made some festive printables to help take your backyard barbecue to the next level. Our free printable Patriotic Party Pack includes 5 pages of red, white, and blue Americana decor for your next summer party:
cupcake toppers,
a cake topper,
firework bunting,
2 different fillable invitations to customize with your party details,
and firecracker party favors.
We printed ours on white card stock on the Canon PIXMA TS9020 printer for fantastic print quality, just like we used for our printable dogwood flowers and the rainbow Instagram collage.
All of these printables are super easy to assemble and no one will know you didn’t have to spend money on them! Just download and print the free printable patriotic party pack here (and then say that ten times fast and start assembling.

Cupcake Toppers (page 1)
For the cupcake toppers, simply cut out the flag shapes, fold in half and attach a toothpick inside. You can use tape, hot glue, or whatever you have on hand.
Cake Topper (page 1)
The cake topper is even easier! Cut out the shape and attach to two sticks of some kind. We used bamboo skewers (since you might have some extras from your barbecue menu) or you could use cute striped paper straws like these or these, lollipop sticks like these, etc.
Patriotic Bunting (page 2)
The firecracker bunting requires only cutting and stringing it up. We used miniature clothes pins like these we used for the rainbow Instagram collage to make it super quick and cute, but there are tons of options! You could punch holes in both corners of the short end of the pennant and lace the string through or place a dab of hot glue on the back of each pennant to attach it to the string. You can also use whatever kind of string you want from cotton string, bakers’ twine, ribbon, lace, yarn, or jute twine.
Customizable Party Invitations (pages 3-4)
Let us do the work of making your party invitations! We've included a specific 4th of July invitation or a more general patriotic invitation, since the best summers have more than just one party! The file is customizable, so you can open the pdf and fill in each form field, then simply print as many as you need. There are four invites per page, but to make it even easier you only have to fill in the fields one time – they will automatically copy to the other invites. Or if you prefer to hand write your own information in you can just print and cut along the dotted lines.
Printable Firecracker Party Favors (page 5)
Whether you use these firecracker printables as party favors or as part of your table centerpieces, they are sure to be a hit! You can fill them with sweets or little toys and guests will be so pleased when they pull the tissue paper bottoms off to reveal their little treasures.
To assemble the firecrackers you will need the printable page, scissors, double-stick tape or glue, a hot glue gun, string, and some tissue paper. After printing, cut out the parts for the firecrackers; each firecracker has a rectangle for the body and a semicircle for the cone nose. Then, cut a piece of 4″x4″ tissue paper for each firecracker.  Fold each tissue paper square in half. Take one of the rectangle printable pieces and affix the folded edge of the tissue paper to one of the long sides of the rectangle using double-stick tape or glue.
Next, roll the rectangle and attached tissue paper into a cylinder. Secure the short edges of the rectangle together using hot glue to form the cylinder.
Then tie a piece of string around the tissue paper to form the bottom of the firecracker. At this point you can fill the cylinder with candy or whatever treasures you can fit. Be sure not to overfill the cylinder since you will be putting hot glue along the top edge of the paper.
To finish the firecracker, roll a semi-circle printable piece into a cone and secure with hot glue. Then put a bead of hot glue across the top edge of the paper cylinder and attach the cone.
