Repostober 18
Technically Repostober because I've posted all these before individually. But now they're all together in the wall hanging!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some discussion under the readmore for those interested in why it's laid out the way it is
An important thing to note: These blocks were made as I felt like making them; there was no grand design at the start. However, now that I have 9 of them? There is absolutely a scheme to the layout.
Top row: Hoover Dam (FNV location); Benny (FNV); Landlocked Lighthouse (FO76 location)
Middle row: Rocketship from “Come Fly With Me” FNV quest; Fallout Nuka Cola Quantum and Perfectly Preserved Pie, foods; Vault Dwellers leaving their Vault (probably FO76 since that’s actually got forests nearby)
Bottom row: Dinky the Dinosaur (FNV location); Mothman (FO76); Giant Teapot (FO76 location)
Alternately:
Left column is entirely FNV; right column is entirely FO76; middle column are iconic characters/items.
The four corners of the layout are all locations. On the left, FNV; on the right, FO76.
The top and bottom centers are iconic and generally favorite characters of FNV and FO76: Benny and the Mothman (which sounds like a children’s book or movie, doesn’t it?)
The left and right on the center row are almost mirror images: green around a black center; black around a green and blue center.
The center block is the only one with consumables and the only one with Vault-Tec colors (blue and yellow). Nuka-Cola Quantum first appeared in Fallout 3 and has been in every game since. Perfectly Preserved Pie first appeared in Fallout 4 and also appears in Fallout 76.
The top locations (Hoover Dam, Lighthouse) are notable and highly visible locations.
The bottom locations (Dinky, Teapot) are notable and very kitschy, unique, tourist-related locations.

The Khans - My Introspective
I don't like the Military and I don't support a lot of the actions the NCR does to the Mojave in New Vegas but in terms of the Khans I feel like the fandom infantilizes or diminishes the fact that they are or at least one of the most violent raider groups in the Mojave.
What happened at Bitter Springs was a tragedy, innocent lives were lost and the fact that the NCR swept it under the rug and continued to hunt down Khans that are truly trying to back down and resettle is horrendous, but there is a history to the NCR's aggression towards them.
The Khans first appear in Fallout 1, the main faction of raiders in the game besides the mentioned Vipers (who don't actually appear if I remember correctly). They came from Vault 15 along with the members that would form rival groups; The Vipers, The Jackals, and Shady Sands. They are a very large and foreboding raiding party, known for burning towns and encampments they attack and taking survivors as their slaves or slaves to sell. They are a big reason why the Jackals and Vipers are actually so small in New Vegas, they wiped them out.
Their main targets where Shady Sands and Junker town, the former of the two would be what became The New California Republic. This explains a big part of their animosity towards the Khans, only furthered by the fact the Khans kidnapped Tandi as a young girl, the girl that would go to offically found the NCR out of Shady Sands. When the dweller saved her and killed much of the Khans, this allowed the NCR to develop into what it currently is as they no longer needed to focus on fighting off constant raids.
When the Khans became the New Khans in Fallout 2, they barely resembled the Khans as they were led by Darion, Garl Death-Hand's son (former leader of the Khans). They were smaller and refortified vault 15, still planning to take down the NCR (at this time nowhere near as imperialist as they are in FNV) as mostly a revenge/power ploy. They manipulate The Squat, a group of y'know squatters, that lived in the upper levels, promising and lying about repairing the vault and offering them ransacked caravan resources if they kept the NCR away. Being their only life line The Squat had no choice. Still the chosen one got rid of them and they left New California for the untapped Mojave.
The Great Khans, the most current iteration, continued in the path as the original Khans, regrouping and gaining information from the Followers who hoped they'd use their new medical knowledge to heal themselves. They gained more members and a substantial part of Vegas territory before they were run out by the three families. They were pushed to Bitter Springs where they first and foremost continued to pick off and attack NCR settlements, most of which consisted of caravans, towns, and camps as they saw them as easy like in their old days. It was the killing of four influential Republic members (non-military) that brought on Bitter Springs.
Bitter Springs was the result of years of hatred and animosity and likely the goal to send a final message to the Khans. It does not excuse the fact that innocent men, women, and children were slaughtered with few survivors. It does not excuse the fact that the NCR has yet to make amends for this and continues to try and persecute the Khans even in moments of surrender.
This post is not to defend what happened but to give a quick rundown of the Khan's history and their history with the NCR. It's to remind people that the NCR is not just their military power but an actual group/settlement of people that were also attacked indiscriminately by the Khans. It's to point out that the Khans were not a band of indigenous people (no matter the comparisons) driven from their homes but raiders who fed into the brutal cultures of the west coast wasteland and were in turn treated to the same things.
My frustration comes from the fact that FNV has so many comparisons to indigenous struggles but the groups it chooses are not comparable at all. Their oppression hinges on not being familiar with their past, which explains why they have the reputation they do in canon. The "tribes" are often not even groups of minorities or have goals/desires out of acquisitions of power and I feel like it is important to both acknowledge that this is bad indigenous rep because it is not supposed to be. It is supposed to be a comparison of the in-game groups and how they all do the same things and justify it in their own fucked up ways, some better at it than others.
FNV of all the Fallout games (in light of it being heavily Western based) distastefully uses indigenous imagery and theming for groups that are sad mimicries of American indigenous cultures at best and outright offensive at worst.
#this is also to say the NCR is barely different but they imply New California is a city and safe and that once the NCR military leaves#they will properly try to settle and revitalize the area unlike the goals of almost every other group#the issues arise from the tensions of the hoover dam battles the legion and the corrupt leaders chosen in what is a terse time#but the khans are interesting to me and I like the named khans we have in FNV but they are treated to be almost innocent at points due to#all the Ls they keep taking despite admitting to their raider roots and being PROUD#they partnered with the Legion and before i hear they didnt know they were slavers at a point too and likely didnt care if they believed it#would not affec their own. the Mojave is an unforgivnig place and sometimes you make unforgivable alliances since they alienated all their#other options through their continued and consistent behaviors#like i could go on how bad the native rep is but I would not use any of the tribes cause they barely count the only difference from the NCR#is they organize themself differtently like id use the tribes in Honest Hearts cause holy shit is it bad and racist like at least the Mojav#tribes are just white dickheads brutalizing each other and not the characatures of native people the Sorrows Dead Horse and White legs are#like yikes I hated playing white savior the dlc#this is also semi personal because i dont see a lot of POC people in the fandom talking about the Khans and so I dont know if the proper#perspectives can be added because just because something can represent a culture or group doesn't mean it does or that it was the primary#thing they were trying to get across#like feel free to ask and talk to me more about it cause grrr#fallout#fallout new vegas#the great khans#the khans#new california republic#the ncr#fallout 1#fallout 2#papa khan

Thursday again: Goodsprings edition
I have now been there often enough for the bar staff to remember me.
Visiting
So, there was some sort of children's hospital fundraiser thingamabob serving as an excuse for a couple dozen FNV cosplayers (and one Desdemona) (and me) to show up at the Pioneer Saloon and have a good time. Dust storm all day. Many jokes and drinks were had.
Current owner of the Pioneer Saloon, a Louisiana native who made a small fortune selling sterilized voodoo charms to Californians, did a lil walking tour around town. Talked enthusiastically about the chicken coop next his house from which he hopes to soon be collecting fresh eggs for the bar's omelettes. Also about how he would like to rebuild the town hotel, which a prior owner burnt down in a fit of pique. Also about how Goodsprings is full of old mine shafts that could potentially kill you if you wander on to private land, which is plausible enough it only now occurs to me that would be an excellent rumor to start so fans don't go mobbing people's homes.
(Easy Pete was there. I could not tell you his actual name. One of these days I'll put his past as a miner on the Fallout wiki as a canonical fact and see what kind of pushback I get.)
Bethesda sent a couple hundred Vault Boy masks in what was either a wildly misguided attempt to be helpful or a cunning ploy to get rid of them. I do very much like my new soda pin.
Reading
Took a page from @shiny-good-rock and borrowed a book on rockhounding from the Goodsprings library trailer (single wide, smallest library in Clark County). Learning the local hobbies, etc. Not gonna be mine but I do like reading about other people's obsessions.
Listening
youtube
Las Vegas has one jazz station, run out of the local uni, which has become my default in the car if I'm not vibing on PSB. I was happy to hear they hit their fall fundraising goal early.
Driving down the highway at night while this sort of thing plays ...good times.
Watching
Fourwatch continues with "The Sontaran Experiment", as per here.
Writing
Fiddled with the Yuletide assignment, which [REDACTED]. At least it's done now.
I think I have talked myself into November!novel. Several aspects of my personal life have settled down enough for this to be plausible, but also it's fall now, it's cold in the mornings, and my New England-trained brain assumes this is when new projects start.

So given that Mormonism is almost dead and it's very possible for the Courier to have never heard of Christianity, I'm trying to brainstorm post-war beliefs. What do you think people swear by? What sort of religions, superstitions, rituals, etc. have sprung up in the wake of the bombs? (Note that I've only extensively played FNV so far of the series so I don't know about other games' stuff much.)
This is an incredible question and really fun to consider. Gonna tag the expert @calder to weigh in on canon (and beyond) too.
Christianity is a bigger influence in Fallout 3. Revelation 21:6 is the favorite bible verse of James and Catherine, the Lone Wanderer's parents, and it's quoted multiple times. That's probably the most overt reference outside of Joshua's Mormonism, but the wiki has a log here if you want to see more. It's also incomplete, since it doesn't mention Arcade quoting Isaac in Genesis 22, but still a good source for what's mentioned in canon. Given how ridiculously invasive Christianity is in U.S. American politics/culture and how inextricably tied it is to the jingoism, racism, McCarthyism, American exceptionalism etc. that the Fallout games were meant to critique, I don't think you could effectively do Fallout without it coming up. I'm trying not to write a whole dissertation on how Chrisitianity has influenced U.S. politics right now (tho maybe someday), but even where you don't have actual Christians, I think you're still going to have a lot of Christian influence. I wouldn't be surprised by people still swearing on a Christian bible or saying "Jesus Christ" or the like as an exclamation, even in places in the wasteland where Christianity isn't practiced or particularly well-known, since that has become so integrated into the language (similar to how the days of the week in English are named after ancient Norse deities even though very few people in the U.S./England practice that religion). Fallout 4 starts to explore new post-war superstitions and religions with the Children of Atom, and 76 goes even a bit further with Mothman and some other cultish beliefs, but I haven't spent as much time playing those or the games before Bethesda, so I'll let others way in on that for now.
This is already so long and I haven't even begun speculating about stuff that isn't directly supported by canon, so I may just make some more posts after this. I love the idea of a cult centered around the power of nuclear weapons, but the Children of Atom didn't really do it like I would have, so I can outline my ideas about that later, too. I'd like to explore the concept of radiation as akin to fae or spirits, which is probably not something that meshes well realistically (virtually everyone knows what radiation is and wouldn't need to explain radiation poisoning as a ghost's curse, for example), but I think it would be Fun.
Nuclear semiotics in Fallout is so fascinating to consider. Like the idea of narrow triangles and spiky symbols becoming taboo because they're associated with the hostile architecture of long-time nuclear waste sites. Of course, the point behind hostile architecture like that is that we already associate thorny shapes with danger. Maybe phrases or folk wisdom develops around the idea of a problem compared to the size of your thumb, related to using your thumb as a measurement against a mushroom cloud to determine if you're in a fallout zone. "A problem bigger than your thumb" is serious, whereas "a knuckle" is considered a less urgent issue.

A Soul to Mend His Own | Ch. 19
Tumblr media
(Because I couldn’t find an appropriate gif and I gave up after 20 min of searching)
Warning, if it hasn’t been obvious in the movies there is Nazi symbolism within the First Order. I will expand on this much more throughout the story. If this is something that bothers you, please just exit the story. The author does not condone any Nazi ideals, this is just for fictional uses only.
A Kylo Ren x Modern! Reader in a soulmate au with some canon divergence. —————————————SLOWBURN————————————–
He is already the Supreme leader, searching the universe to find you, his Empress. Your name on his wrist has been the only constant in his life, while you have doubts about his existence and his acceptance of you. He isn’t in the database and why did the name Kylo Ren cover Ben Solo?
MASTERLIST
Chapter 19: Building the Foundation of Health
A/N: This chapter is a bit shorter. Tomorrow’s is kinda long and has supplemental pieces so bare with me please. Also wash your hands and stop touching your face. Take a clorox or baby wipe to your phone, I bet it is dirty.
“My lady, the Supreme Leader has a request for you,” said General Pryde.
“What is it,” you ask.
“The Supreme Leader has requested that you are only referred to as Lady Ren. He explained that your safety is of utmost importance and you are to refrain from using your name. It has also been requested that you do not divulge your position, you are to be an Earth contact that has been promoted to the Supreme Leader’s inner circle and nothing more,” said the general.
You considered what the general had to say. It was for your safety. Of course, you and Kylo had yet to figure out when you would go public with your relationship to one and other but you didn’t know how to feel about this. You felt as if it was another lie you had to say about your relationship, the first one being to Carter and Hayden and the second to your parents/family. You also wish that Kylo had told you this himself last night, instead of having the general tell you. But you conceded to his request.
“Of course. Is there anything else that the Supreme Leader requests,” you ask.
“That is everything, for now, my lady.” And with that, the meeting was to start in ten minutes.
You asked the lieutenant if he could get you some coffee. Filing into the room were the other First Order medical officers and the directors of the CDC and WHO along with the surgeon general. This was the first time you had seen a U.S. Military officer anywhere near the First Order. Somehow the usual clean and neat uniform seemed outdated and bulky in comparison.
They were all seated by the time 10 AM hit. Dr. Koroban stood and addressed the room, “my name is Dr. Crale Koroban. I am the chief medical officer aboard the  Finalizer.  The Supreme Leader has left me in charge of this committee. We are to improve both the hygiene and health standards of Earth, and bring them up to First Order regulation standards.”
You could see the three health officials take in this information. You had yet to figure out if they were pleased with this or not.
“We plan on improving vaccinations and overall healthcare. We understand that your ‘first world’ countries have knowledge of disease prevention and basic hygiene but they seem to avoid this as a privilege. In the First Order, everyone receives the same top-quality care in our medical facilities and this is what we will bring here to your planet. Are there any initial questions,” asked Dr. Koroban.
“The First Order would like to improve the overall health and hygiene of the planet. Regardless of location and income,” asked the director of the CDC.
“Yes, as the Allegiant General Hux stated in his speech, ‘Personal Health is part of the foundation of organizational purity.’ Your planet has agreed to become annexed by the First Order and thus has become a part of the organization,” replied Dr. Koroban.
“So is the First Order asking us to just simply back up your policies or are they looking to be assisted in setting up policies for Earth,” asked the director of the WHO.
“Both. There are current health standards within the First Order that I can not compromise on, but there may be areas that we can adjust for your planet. Currently, we will not adjust our policies on vaccinations or proper basic hygiene. We may be able to adjust our dietary restrictions and our reproductive policies,” said Dr. Koroban.
“These vaccinations, are from possible diseases that they may come in contact with when dealing with those who come from other parts of the galaxy correct? Why would someone who may never come into contact with anyone from space,” asked the Surgeon General.
“The point is if they do, we also want everyone under our care to receive the same treatment. Like I said before vaccines are not on the table in means of adjusting our policy,” said Dr. Koroban.
“Can we first go over what your policies are,” you ask.
“Certainly Lady Ren. The First Order has mandatory vaccinations against Brainrot Plague, Rakghoul Plague, Endregaad Plague, FNV-23, Crimson Forever, Rooze Disease, Pig-Lizard Flu, Ascomycetous Pneumoconiosis, Balmorra Flu, along with a handful of others. We also do standard immunizations for Hepatitis B, Rotavirus, Diphtheria, tetanus, and acellular pertussis, Haemophilus and other vaccinations that coincide with the U.S. standards,” stated the Dr. Koroban. “We also require basic hand washing after every bathroom visit, daily showering, and thrice daily toothbrushing. We provide handkerchiefs to all personal along with many hand-sanitizing stations throughout our stations.”
“So these are the two policies that the First Order will not compromise on? What are the two that they might,” asked the director of the CDC?
“We have a two-child policy within the First Order, along with applications for parentage. There are harsh penalties for going against this policy. You must be of a certain rank and must have a certain clean record to be able to apply to have children. All females receive birth control implants and all personal are checked once a month for sexually transmitted diseases and infections. The First Order also has policies against non-monogamous relationships for this reason,” said Dr. Koroban. “In regards to dietary restrictions, we are a military. We control what our soldiers and officers eat aboard ships. It is carefully regulated to maintain peak performance within our ranks. We require certain supplements and vitamins for our personnel.”
“So the First Order wants to restrict the birth rate on our planet and control what we eat and drink,” asked the Surgeon General.
You spoke up, “No, these are the two policies that we can negotiate on. Certainly, you wish that everyone has access to birth control and STD testing, along with healthy diets. Because Earth will be mostly First Order civilians they are allowing flexibility that is not allowed within the military itself.”
All three of the health official took into consideration what you said. The director of the CDC asked, “So who are you? You are obviously not a First Order officer.”
“You are correct I am not. I am Lady Ren, I a contact for the First Order on Earth's societal issues. I am from Earth, but I am helping the First Order achieve a smooth transition in annexing this planet—a mediator of sorts,” you stated with an air of confidence.
Again they all three considered what was just said.
“So these decisions, how are they going to be made? Will you just overrule us? Or will there be actual compromises,” asked the director of the WHO.
“There will be compromises where compromises can be made. We urge you to think of the health of your people and how they will benefit from our policies. We do not want to make you distrust us, nor your people distrust us. A healthy citizen is a good citizen,” said Dr. Dabrini.
You pondered over the phases that Dr. Koroban repeated from General Hux, ‘Personal health is a part of the foundation of organizational purity.’ What did this mean? What did organizational purity mean? You knew that you were about to find out soon.

so what's the consensus on who the actual milves are 🤔
well, a lot of people’s suggestions were either sensible or considering cougars and milfs to be the same thing. now of course they can overlap ! but truthfully i think a lot more cougars exist in fallout, than milfs. So my personal list is short probably
1. The Lone Wanderer’s mom. Now you may ask, I didn’t consider Nora one, why Catherine. Well, I’d rather list NPCs than player characters. Also James is a dilf, so inherently Catherine is a milf.
2. The Village Elder of Arroyo. Same deal, I just think player character’s parents if included are automatic milf/dilf territory.
3. Rose from FO2. It’s never listed that she has children, though her great niece in FNV gives me enough leeway. Also just her description... “You see a pleasantly plump woman. Her gray hair is done up in a loose bun, and she walks with a slight waddle. You can't help but feel relaxed around her.” ideal milf
4. Tandi. She does have a son, though Tandi in FO2 reaches gilf territory.
5. Kerith from FO2. I have an issue with listing creatures as milfs. I am not a monster fucker. But she talks, and I find the intelligent deathclaws to be very endearing.
6. Ostensibly, Holly from the Family can be a milf. Found family of vampires milf...
7. Leaf Mother Laurel is a milf, and the type that you find at a organic farmer’s market
8. Rosie and Jessica from the Republic of Dave are milfs. Woe The Pain of Weird Narcissistic Man Polygamy
9. Vera from Rivet City has the responsibility of a milf, even though she’s bryan wilk’s cousin. So idk what that label would be
10. Carol is one of the Definitive Milfs of Fallout, god bless her
11. Old Lady Palmer is a combo milf/gilf
12. Sandra from the Pitt is a milf, until I steal her baby
13. Trudy has milf energy, a vibe if you will. Kinda like Rose from FO2
14. Lily is also a combo milf/gilf. I’m not into mutants like that though but for everyone else who is this is just facts
15. Waking Cloud is also one of the Definitive Milf of fallout
17. Penske from Vault 81 reaches adoptive milf territory
and a general list of fo4 milfs : Connie Abernathy, Kessler, Wilhelmina Cabot, Marcy Long, Abigail Finch, Carol Peabody (barely realizing...there are 2 carols who are both ghouls in bethesda fallouts)
so about 23, there are ofc more but i wanted characters of somewhat importance

from what i can tell, dima spent a long time fucking around in the wilderness before founding acadia, and the children showed up sometime around then, led by confessor martin. tektus replaced him fairly recently, and his militancy further broke the already-fractured (thanks to alan lee's murder of one of martin's preachers) peace between the three communities. dima kept the peace for a long time until that happened, and we show up when tensions are near a breaking point
I have been thinking about this in the last few days because I am writing a fic about Faraday meeting DiMA and there were a lot of things I had to research and first of all we don’t actually know when Gen 3 synths were created so I don’t know how “old” Faraday is to make any kind of timeline. What bothered me the most is that DiMA got on the island after escaping, he hid in a cave for a year and then for the next 90 years or so he was just....fucking around the island?
90 years is a really, really, REALLY long time. DiMA and Nick’s lifetime covers the rest of the entire franchise in terms of years like they could have easily went through all of the Fallout games and still be back to the Commonwealth in time for their respective arcs. I hope that puts into perspective how long 100 years are.
The first gen 3 synths we know were made in 2242 if I am correct. Now someone will tell me “Actually Maria they were made in 2229 because Mr. Carter killed half of Diamond city” which is... a very overlooked problem because people, and I mean multiple people, say that Mr. Carter had metal components when he was killed. You can argue that they were wrong or paranoid or whatever, but honestly if he didn’t have metal components they wouldn’t know he is a synth. So it just means there is a sub-gen between Gen 2 and Gen 3 that had synthetic human like flesh but mechanical insides.
So back to the issue, lets say Faraday and Chase (since they knew DiMA before Acadia) were created in 2242 making them both 45 years old. That is still 55 years of DiMA fucking around the island on his own. He couldn’t kill Avery before he made Acadia and he didn’t make Acadia without Chase and Faraday. So he was just....sitting I guess, for 55 years all alone in some submarine doing what? No one knows?? No one knows what was a philosopher synth doing all alone on a Island in the middle of nowhere for 55 years. That’s longer than the entirety FO3, FNV and FO4 combined. Actually you know I can probably throw in FO2 but I haven’t played it so I’ll be talking out of my ass.
This comes from the problem that the Institute spent the last 150 years or so creating technology that already existed since on the west coast we have AI more advanced than anything the Institute made, we’ve had pre-war robots who are just as good as Gen 1 and Gen 2 synths, there are apparently cloning machines in a pre-war amusement park that could potentially feed the entire commonwealth, the Institute can bring back extinct species, and they just...did nothing significant or important for 150 years. And then they made synthetic humans they enslaved. All that while the west coast developed very naturally and very realistically with all the societies and towns and tribes that appeared. Also Diamond City apparently exists for 150 years too but it looks like a dump. 150 years. 150 years ago we didn’t have electricity in our world. In 150 years no one did anything, they lived in trash for 150 years.
I don’t know like in favor of my fic the events of DiMA meeting Chase and Faraday, the forming of Acadia and the tensions between the factions all happen in 10-20 years and before that DiMA is the “i sleep” meme for 80 years, I don’t care, its too much work to figure out a timeline that doesn’t exist so just like Bethesda I’ll do what I want. I hope people will read for the cute romance stuff and not for the accuracy of Bethesda’s “No One Did Anything For 150 Years” lore.

What new vegas features do you miss the most in f4?
honestly? the writing. New Vegas had excellent writing, from the plot to the characters to just the dialogue options available to the courier. Having a voice is nice but with the limited dialogue you just can’t roleplay the same way you could in NV. Sole can only either be a bit of a dick, a totally nice guy or a smartass, while the courier can be anything from a complete moron, to an insufferable know-it-all, a smooth talker, a bit of a slut, a violent brute, a sarcastic douche, a by-the-book hero, a quiet badass and anything in between.
And while we’re on dialogue, I really miss the Skill Check dialogue system from NV. You either had the skill needed to get certain things (or just finish quests on an alternate path) or you didn’t, and it was always clear because you got a display that told you how high  of a skill you needed (like “Speech [25/30]). Most importantly, if you didn’t have the needed skill, the actual dialogue would change, giving a good reason why the NPC you were talking to would react differently than if you had said the right thing. Plus some of the failed dialogue checks were some of the funniest parts of the game.
In FO4, if you pass a speech check or not is determined entirely by chance. You can have a CHA stat of 10 and still fail. Then you reload, your character says the exact same thing in the exact same context to the same character at the same time AND NOW IT WORKS FOR SOME REASON. That’s annoying busywork and kind of breaks my immersion. They had the same thing in FO3 where your chance of  success in speech checks was given in percentages and I didn’t like it there either.
I also like that the courier’s backstory was kept relatively vague, so you could make up  your own story for your character. FO4 gives you a pre-baked background that is pretty lukewarm for my tastes and doesn’t leave much room to make up your own character interpretation (unless you do some hard retconning/headcanon action to get around that, but even then it’s not amazing).
But other than that, New Vegas generally just didn’t take itself as seriously as FO4. FO4 has all this big focus on how miserable everyone is and how shitty life in the wasteland is. There is so much drama with families being torn apart, everyone being afraid of the Institute, the Brotherhood stomping about the place, children dying of incurable diseases…it is all so dark and serious and miserable it gets exhausting after a while.
New Vegas has dark stuff too, with drug use, slavery, prostitution, bureaucratic fuckery costing lives, war crimes, lack of medical aid, lack of food and fresh water and power, economic inequality…i could go on. So it absolutely has serious and dark issues. I mean one of the companion characters mercy killed his pregnant wife to spare her the horrors of slavery for fuck’s sake.
But you know what it also has? Ghouls flying to the moon. A gang of grannies in pink dresses beating people to death with rolling pins. Cyberdogs. A big blue grandma who looks like hulk and wears a cute flower hat. A gang of elvis impersonators. at least two (2) robots who think they’re cowboys. People cosplaying ancient romans. A dude wearing a dog for a hat. A giant plastic dinosaur with a store inside that sells tiny plastic dinosaur souvenirs. A sexbot called “FISTO” that you can hire for yourself if you wish.
What I’m trying to say is, New Vegas had a lot of serious themes (I’d argue them being even portrayed better than in FO4 but that’s a matter of opinion). But at the same time it didn’t lose it’s sense of humor. This is a world where science can make people live 200 years, create super mutants by dipping people in green goo, and radiation is basically magic. It’s not super serious all the time or tragic. Might as well have some fun with it. Fallout has a long history of dark comedy after all.
FO4 kinda lost the humor aspect and maybe it’s personal preference, but I never liked media where everything is just sad and miserable all the time because you get kinda tired of it and desensitized after a while. I don’t hate it or anything, but it can never reach the same place in my heart fnv did ;-;
god sorry for the novel i could just talk about fnv all day
