 Shore-dweller pets typically help clean sand out of their homes, keep pests away, or help out on scavenging trips. Sometimes they even bring back shiny things, a by-product of the traits they were bred for. Mudsifters like Nurlot are good at finding things buried in the sand/mud.

Ocean-dwellers like to decorate their homes with stationary creatures. It stems from an ancient practice of wearing colourful things to ward off predators (like how decorator crabs use anemones and sponges). Some crawler cultures still do this, but more for tradition than survival.
