(i was just gonna tweet about this but fuck it ima make it a whole post leggo)
Something that I absolutely ADORE about the casting is the fact that they used Tennant and Sheen because their little nods and bits of acting AMAZES ME.
Aziraphale is SO OPEN with how he feels, and you dont notice that until you see it in every word, every look, every smile, every little action he does in relation to Crowley. He is so smitten from day one, and so distraught at the internal conflict in him, and so happy that he knows Crowley, and so proud in himself for standing up for himself, and so passionate about the development of the human race etc. etc. etc. Hes so rich and full of EMOTIONS and FEELS SO MUCH even if he doesnt want to or says anything and i love him.
The thing is this show is riddled with Opposites But Not, right? Crowley is supposed to be the complete opposite of everything about Aziraphale EXCEPT HES NOT. Because hes played by David ‘Tenth Doctor pining constantly over Rose Tyler’ Tennant. Hes so good at having all this emotion on his face, without actually showing anything, and the fact that he wears glasses majority of the time helps with that too. Hes closed book, hes hardened, hes snarky and charming and the human epitome of being a Slytherin (but if you know Tennant you can spot all those emotional breakdowns he silently has REWATCH AND YOULL SEE WHAT I MEAN).
but somethign that I love about this dynamic is that, while Aziraphale is so puppy-eyed smitten, his behaviour contrasts this. He is constantly denying how he feels (Around his superiors, around his beliefs of morality, he is constantly pushing Crowley away - we’re not friends, i dont even like you, were on opposite sides, i dont think my side would like that very much, youre a demon im an angel, etc etc.). Crowley, on the other hand, while is a demon and ‘evil’, has the most verbal and romantic declarations out of any other character in the show (hes emotional when hes telling Az about his bookshop burning down, lets run away together, you killed my best friend, we’re on our side now, you can stay at my place if you like, lemme give you a lift anywhere youd like, etc etc.).
Its like theyre so opposite but so interwoven with each other that they slowly just become each other (to the point where they can perfectly replicate and be each other and fool their own superiors) and to see that be so subtely developed over the course of 6 1-hour episodes astounds me and is so beautiful
