Historical Context of Growing up

Spiegalman having grown up with not one, but two parents who survived the Holocaust brought such a heavy impact on Spiegalman, not only through his writing but through his own personal emotional stress as well.

Spiegalman’s family immigrated to the United States in 1951. By 1952 137,450 Jewish refugees had settled in the United states. Living in the states was no escape from the horrors both parents had endured during the holocaust and sometimes would wake up in the middle of the night screaming. Spiegalman’s mother suffered from depression for most of Spiegalman’s life, until she finally killed herself when he was 20 years old.

After his mother's death, Spiegalman’s father burned all of his mother's diaries of her experiences during the war and in the camps which she had put aside for Art to read. So Maus ended up being based off a complimations of over 30 hours of tape recorded conversations Spiegalman had with his father. His father was distant for most of his life, so recording his father narrating his experiences ended up framing a new relationship with his father.

World War 2 left the world with a wave of overwhelming guilt. And Art did feel this guilt, especially after the death of his mother. He felt responsible for her suicide believing it to be a product of his own neglect. He remembers the last conversation he had with his mother where she asks him if he still loves her. He responded with a cold shouldered “Sure” and he is pained by this memory.

Comics at the time while he was writing this were also never taken seriously. One of Art Spiegelman’s greatest accomplishments was giving credibility to the genre. The success of Maus was not just an individual achievement for Spiegelman, it was a;so created an opening for the form.
