Was it always this bright?...

...It must have been - nothing substantial about the city itself has changed, I’m the only thing that’s different. My…vampire daddy? Murderer? Guide? Shit, they have a word for this. My whatever-it-is warned me that my heightened senses could take some getting used to. 

I don’t remember traffic being so fucking loud, or wincing at the sound of a jackhammer a block away. I definitely didn’t have to squint against the bloom of the lights being carried by the smoke that drifts from the subway grates. 

I think the worst of it was when I was walking by my favorite hot dog stand on Lexington. I’ve never been so fucking nauseated by a smell before. Even the smell of raw sewage drifting from the grate off the curb didn’t churn my stomach as much as those sizzling sticks of meat. 

Sire. That’s the word. I have to learn a whole other language for this double life bullshit. “It’s not vampire, it’s Kindred,” “You don’t have blood now, it’s vitae,” “I didn’t kill you, I embraced you.” I wake up with pit in my stomach the size of central fucking park, and this guys going on about Masquerade this, Camarilla that, like he doesn’t know he put this hunger inside of me.

I thought I was crazy the first time I heard it, but no - apparently this is the new normal too. The beasts hissing voice rattles my brain, crawls up my throat, rages against my stomach lining telling me to hurt people. “Go for the throat, drain them dry,” it’s making me feel psycho. 

They tell me the …shit, do I call people “humans” now? For some reason that feels the weirdest to wrap my head around, but here we are. They tell me the ...humans like the feeling of “the kiss,” and I’ll admit they don’t seem to mind the few times I’ve tried it, but it feels so fucking wrong once I come up for air. 

I used to love nights like these - where the rain taps on the awnings of shops and people buy $20 last-minute “I love the city!” umbrellas from the hucksters on the corners. I’d savor the sound of my shoes clicking on the wet pavement as I walked from school to work to home. Now I guess I’ll put in headphones to drown out each little splash until I’m “used to this,” and pray to whatever will listen that day (shit…night) comes soon.
