The progress day festivities was something that Arros couldn't get a grasp on, never in all her life had she seen so many people in one area who weren't fleeing from danger. She watched the magicians and charlatans flaunt their wares and strange equipment, stuff she couldn't even fathom the purpose of. This was some sort of hell it wold seem. Some stupid brightly coloured hell that smelled like sweet treats and sweat. It was almost a relief when she was called aside, a familiar bark from her old friend. "Disappointed?" Arros snorted. "Funny, I keep coming back. Meanwhile, your wit hasn’t resurrected once."

Arros frowned, eyes narrowing as she studied Torsten. Something felt off. It nagged at the edges of her memory, just out of reach. The man's stance was different, his balance subtly adjusted. But then she saw it. Torsten was missing an arm.

Her first instinct wasn’t shock or concern—it was confusion. Had it always been like that? Her mind scrambled, trying to pin down a recent image of Torsten, whole or otherwise, but all she found was a maddening blur of past battles and half-remembered faces.

“…Was it always like that?” Arros asked before she could stop herself.

There was always more going on than Torsten cared to entertain. He'd recovered physically from the wounds he'd sustained a little over a month ago, but the echo of his failure still settled in his bones. Arros, of all people, was perhaps the last face he'd expected to see in Eterna. Torsten, it seemed, had become all too comfortable with the notion that there were simply people he'd never seen again. Grateful as he was the Queendom had offered Iskarans refuge, ducked below some extravagant display of magic and some entertainer sending whirring, mechanical doves fluttering from his hat, he couldn't help but wonder if this was where all witchers had come to die.

"Back from the dead," Torsten commented, aiming to get Arros' attention. "again."

Hey thank you and sorry for missing this! I'm glad you enjoyed :) Melbourne actually has a relatively robust comics scene, you should come to Hallozeen later in the year or the Festival of the Photocopier next year. In terms of other Aus indie cartoonists making work about the landscape/environment, Leonie Brialey does wonderful pen drawings of the central desert (her book Raw Feels is very good), Torsten Strokirch makes cool work about Victorian wildlife and flora, Cecile Richard has made some really moving pixel art renditions of inner suburbs Naarm and landscapes on Wurundjeri country. Other Naarm artists I know making responsive visual work include Jess C, Marlo Mogensen, Meg O'Shea and everyone at Glom Press and Helio Press. I myself admin a creative writing course called Toolkits which runs a Graphic Narratives stream -- applications have unfortunately just closed but you should apply for next year if you're under 30 and interested in making comics!

"If the story about 'Clearlight Brand "microdose" LSD' is true, then the origin of the term 'microdose' for very small doses of LSD precedes all other uses of the term, e.g. in pharmacology (since 1995), in agriculture (since 2005) and by Fadiman (2011)." ---German psychiatrist Torsten Passie, in his 2019 book THE SCIENCE OF MICRODOSING PSYCHEDELICS. The book reproduces a page of the above product information leaflet for "Clearlight brand 'MICRODOSE' LSD" that I wrote and distributed in early 1988. ("The name Clear Light was a promise about the mind-state the material itself produced: as a famously 'clean' form of LSD, its effects were described as limpid, even at high doses. In later decades, the first branded packaging of LSD microdoses [5 μg] were also named Clear Light." ---Erik Davis, on page 20 of his 2023 book BLOTTER-The Untold Story of an Acid Medium, published by MIT Press. I am the person who produced the first branded packaging of 5 μg LSD microdoses.) The "Standard Metric Dose" of LSD is 100 micrograms. The first batch of microdoses I produced were made in Berkeley in 1980 from LSD I illegally purchased. I called them "CLEARLIGHT brand MIND VITAMIN TABLETS" and packaged them in labeled shrink-wrapped brown glass bottles, each containing 100 tablets. MANY of the singers took the tablets over the course of perhaps 6 months, and said their experiences were “wonderful”.) I attended an interview with Albert Hofmann that was conducted at Shared Visions in Berkeley in 1983 by Will Noffke. ("This is the least toxic compound that exists." ---Albert Hofmann, describing LSD during the interview. The quote was published in the first issue of High Frontiers.) I VERY briefly spoke with Hofmann afterward, and I mentioned 5 microgram "microdoses". The second labeled batch of microdoses containing 5 micrograms of LSD (each 25-dose package of which was distributed with a product information leaflet reading “CLEARLIGHT brand 'MICRODOSE' LSD") I manufactured in early 1988. The LSD in this second labeled batch of microdoses was said to have been legally synthesized by a commercial lab for use as comparative samples by law enforcement and medical labs. I put it on perforated paper. More than 400,000 doses were manufactured. At least 200,000 doses of this second labeled batch were seized by the DEA in Oakland, California in January 1993. No one was arrested. The portion of the batch that was distributed was given away, not sold. If I had been arrested and convicted for producing these microdoses, I could have been sentenced to life in prison. The Hand knit his fingers over knuckles, obviously only tolerating Torsten’s insistence. “Very well, then. Did you have any noble prospects in mind?” Ormir asked, airily. “Ones that would be happy to wed their daughters to an estranged heir to a fallen kingdom; One thought of the continent over as a boy shuddering behind the Queen’s skirts, without protections to offer, nor functional trade, nor held land, and a bounty on his remaining bloodline?” If such a long-lived idiot existed, Ormir would kiss the man himself. As far as he knew, none existed.

Breaking from the cool stone terrace, Ormir moved to the adjoining parlor with a stocked bar of crystalline decanters. With some effort, he popped the lid from one’s mouth, and tested its breath. The front note burned of pepper, and mellowed to a bonfire of fruit-laden plum trees. Good enough.

“This commitment of yours to remaining uncaring is commendable. It’s also banal, and childish. You will cost Afshin favor for it.” Ormir sounded willing to put coin on it. He poured an inch of dark liquid into a pair of crystal glasses without a drop spilling. “That may have been your armor in Iskaldrik, but I would remind you that as long as we’re suffering Lysaran hospitality, you are expected to be more than just a sentry to him- Brandy?” Once more on the balcony, he extended one of the glasses toward Torsten. The tangent continued. “The eyes we speak of are watching for any damning enough evidence to affirm us as brutish savages unworthy of allegiance. As sword and shadow of the heir, they will view you as an extension of him.” Ormir’s tone had slowly increased in severity as he spoke. “Fuck the magistrates, the executioner, me. You are the face of his justice.” He did not wish to see the witcher die here. If he wasn’t the one to bend Torsten to the way these games were played, another would shortly come along to break him.

The request came as a shock. Her blessing. He would be lucky to only taste her venom. “It is no small request." Ormir sounded breathless just thinking on it. "Am I to convince the Lysaran Queen to submit magic-born children to,” torture “training?” He asked, reminded again of why worthy soldiers didn’t often translate well into worthy politicians.

"I wouldn't." Torsten's opinion of the Hand might have been in the gutter somewhere - he was a man who lacked any honor, but the Kingsguard could relent that they'd all done dishonorable things in recent years. Whatever his views on Ormir might be, he'd never accused the Hand of doing anything so shortsighted as taking anyone's feelings under consideration where a critical decision was concerned, save for his own. For that, Ormir had his respect, but in the same vein of thought, Ormir had Torsten's suspicion.

Politics would never be where the witcher lay his sword, though it affected him just the same. It was not difficult for Torsten to accept that Afshin would marry someone other than him because the Kingsguard had never been an option. No lands, no titles, and no children. His stunted vitality would bring Torsten's expiration sooner rather than later, and beyond that Afshin would still have a nation - and a lifetime - ahead of him.

Selfishly, Torsten hoped that whoever Ormir chose for him would help the future King carry the burden that the Kingsguard, inevitably, would not see to the end. Torsten remained silent and stoic. Ormir's point served and Torsten lacked both the tools and the insight to state otherwise. He still saw a serpent in place of a man whenever he looked at Ormir, but this was the devil Torsten knew. "It is the best time for it."

"As I said though, I pay very little mind to the opinions of others." Whatever the bards wished to say had little impact on the witcher, at least as far as Torsten was concerned. "But the Queen's opinion has sway, and you have her ear. I would rebuild an order here if we are as useful as you say, but we would need her blessing." And undoubtedly Arethusa would be forced to suffer the uproar that would follow - both from her Tower and the Queendom as a whole.
