Just returned from a beautiful weekend at the Yuba river with my beloved brother and sister-in-law. I’m happy to find that the engagement ring I made her so many years ago has aged just as well as she has. #customengagement #rubyring #lovegold #custombridal #cabochonruby #customring (at Hoyt Crossing, South Yuba River) https://www.instagram.com/p/CgvL1rtJyX2/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Thank you for this @outlander-starz, I hope every...
to be fair, this year was probably the best comic con ive had in terms of how much i got lucky enough to experience :) but Friday was a difficult atmosphere. Thankfully I had my good OL friends with me for the panel and a few good seat mates in our row. I’ve been lucky enough to find some great friends through the Outlander community but that has come with a number of negative stories from past events. There are great OL fans out there you just gotta find them :)

On the topic of Jamie, Geneva and hypotheses re: Jamie's agency and his body. What I come up against here is my difference of opinion with DG re: men and the "point of no return" in sex. She believes there is one. I disagree. Neither of us has a penis, so our opinions can only go so far here, but I believe Jamie made the choice (out of anger) to ignore Geneva's "no." I've read and understand all DG's arguments on this but our differing POVs on this mean I just don't buy it.
I agree with you @cabochonruby. Sometimes I think that DG is stuck back 40 years ago when men used to complain that if a woman “teased” them too much they would get “blue balls” which they played up dramatically to try to coerce young women to follow through with intercourse.
As long as they are not drunk or high, from what I know most men can stop themselves. I talk to young folks all the time about what happens in their love lives and plenty of nice guys stop when they are asked to do so–even at the point of penetration. But there are unfortunately many men who don’t choose to do so, with lots of negative consequences.
As I recall there is a love scene in one of the books where Claire makes a noise that Jamie interprets as pain, and he asked Claire if she wants him to stop. So he was clearly willing and able to stop if she had requested it. But he doesn’t stop with Geneva.
I think what is clouding all of this in our recent Voyager discussions of this topic is the fact that when I was answering a different question (regarding Jamie’s mind-body fragmentation when he was living in the cave) I was referring in particular to how his mind at times seems disconnected when he is killing/ hunting. This may be because, as you suggested cabochonruby, he is dissociating at those times.
The passage below the cut refers to the first time that Jamie kills someone in cold blood and it illustrates what I am talking about.
***Virgins Spoilers***
This is a passage from Virgins, when Jamie tries to stop a brute of a soldier from trying to rape one of the barmaids from a tavern:
His ears were ringing, he was vaguely aware of screaming and shouting, but it didn’t matter.
Something had come upon him and nothing mattered. Some small remnant of his consciousness registered surprise, and then that was gone, too. No pain, no thought. He was a red thing and while he saw things, faces, blood, bits of room, they didn’t matter. Blood took him, and when some sense of himself came back, he was kneeling astride the man, hands locked around the big man’s neck, hands throbbing with a pounding pulse, his or his victim’s, he couldn’t tell. [emphasis added]
Him. Him. He’d lost the man’s name. His eyes were bulging, the ragged mouth slobbered and gaped, and there was a small, sweet crack as something broke under Jamie’s thumbs. He squeezed with all he had, squeezed and squeezed and felt the huge body beneath him go strangely limp. He went on squeezing, couldn’t stop, until a hand seized him by the arm and shook him, hard.
“Stop,” a voice croaked, hot in his ear. “Jamie. Stop.”
He blinked up at the white, bony face, unable to put a name to it. Then drew breath— the first he could remember drawing for some time— and with it came a thick stink, blood and shit and reeking sweat, and he became suddenly aware of the horrible spongy feeling of the body he was sitting on. He scrambled awkwardly off, sprawling on the floor as his muscles spasmed and trembled.
–Diana Gabaldon (2013, p. 527, Kindle Edition).
***End Spoilers***
I think this “blood rage that Jamie experiences is different however than what happens when he is having sex. I don’t think he is really out of control when that happens, despite what DG claims.
Still, whether it is killing or sex, there are times when Jamie’s impulse control is pretty weak, which is puzzling for a character who can often be patient, even-tempered, and thoughtful.

Tartan Tuesday: The Sorting Hat Part II
Hello lovelies! It’s time for us to hop aboard the Hogwarts Express again! Harry Potter/OL mash-up let’s goooo! This time around we have a full service bar on board with top shelf beer, wine, champagne, spirits, and of course all of the butter beer you can drink...really whatever your heart desires we can make appear! Today for #TartanTuesday we are going to sort more of our favorite Outlander characters into Hogwarts Houses. Only the Sorting Hat knows where they belong. @classykdlady and I have taken an earlier train to get the castle ready for you all! We have filled the house common rooms with Clinique products, complete spas, Sprinkles Cupcakes, and of course champs and martinis (which we have magically removed all of the calories from). Welcome to Hogwarts!
(PS - if you missed this last time here is the link to our previous Sorting Hat Tartan Tuesday)
In case you have forgotten the process new students at Hogwarts are brought to the castle where they are to spend the next seven years learning to be a witch or a wizard. Upon entering the castle the students are sorted into one of four houses. This is done by a magical hat.
'A thousand years or more ago, When I was newly sewn, There lived four wizards of renown, Whose name are still well-known: Bold Gryffindor from wild moor, Fair Ravlenclaw from glen, Sweet Hufflepuff from valley broad, Shrewd Slytherin from fen. They share a wish, a hope, a dream, They hatched a daring plan, To educate young sorcerers, Thus Hogwarts school began. Now each of these four founders Formed their own house, for each Did value different virtues, In the ones they had to teach. By Gryffindor, the bravest were Prized far beyond the rest; For Ravenclaw, the cleverest Would always be the best; For Hufflepuff, hardworkers were Most worthy of admission; And power-hungry Slytherin Loved those of great ambition. While still alive they did divide Their favourates from the throng, Yet how to pick the worthy ones When they were dead and gone? 'Twas Gryffindor who found the way, He whipped me off his head The founders put some brains in me So I could choose instead! Now slip me snug around your ears, I've never yet been wrong, I'll have alook inside your mind And tell where you belong!'
- The Sorting Hat, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire {J.K. Rowling}
Each house represents different morals and qualities in an individual:
Gryffindor

Values: bravery, daring, nerve, and chivalry
Colors: scarlet and gold
Mascot: lion
Ravenclaw

Values: intelligence, knowledge, and wit
Colors: blue and bronze
Mascot: raven
Hufflepuff

Values: hard work, dedication, patience, loyalty, and fair play
Colors: yellow and black
Mascot: badger
Slytherin

Values: ambition, cunning and resourcefulness
Colors: emerald green and silver
Mascot: serpent
Now let’s see where the hat places our beloved Outlander friends:
James Alexander Malcolm MacKenzie Fraser
Much like Harry himself, the sorting hat would have to think about which house to place Jamie in since he certainly displays qualities that each house finds attractive. Not only is he intelligent, but he seems to have a thirst for educating himself; he is, at times, quite cunning and ruthless; and he is unflinchingly loyal. However, the house that he would thrive in is Gryffindor. He is very brave and forthright, both physically and emotionally. His brashness is tempered with age, but he still doesn’t hesitate to put himself between his family and harm’s way.
Roger Wakefield MacKenzie
Roger Mac is a classic Ravenclaw. “Wit beyond measure,” indeed, though he occasionally lacks the common sense needed for balance. This one seems quite obvious, as he is a scholar and continually fascinated with things from that perspective.
Mother Hildegarde
She is well educated and clever enough to be knowledgeable in many areas, though she chooses to use her talents for the betterment of mankind. Friendship is important to her, but only once you have proven yourself worthy of that relationship. She has the knack of command and natural leadership, as well as being principled with just enough of a touch of understanding that the real world does not deal in absolutes. Her mental acuity and astuteness lead me to place her in Ravenclaw.
Mrs. Fitz
Absolutely a Hufflepuff. She’s the classic mother-like friend who always takes care of everyone with kindness and efficiency. Her heart is far bigger than her body, but that doesn’t mean she’s a pushover. She’ll absolutely let you know if you’re being an idiot, but that just means she loves you very strongly. Loyal is definitely the word to describe her, especially for her concerns for Claire during the witch trial.
The last time the Sorting Hat appeared on Tartan Tuesday some of our own lasses were sorted in houses in case you have forgotten:
Ravenclaw
@classykdlady, @samheughanandcats, @contemplatingoutlander, @whylimewhyanything, @everysoonceinawhile, @bestof60, @unadulteratedreality, @stopbashingmm
Gryffindor
@canuck-sassenach, @whatisaweekend, @beas-knees, @maryhas3littlelambs @mackenzielass4ever
Slytherin
@cmhoughton
Hufflepuff
@trulyprincesspenelope, @adhara112, @cabochonruby, @jennykisssedme @supersekritsuzie
Any friends tuning in for the first time please take the sorting hat quiz here. If you do not want to make a Pottermore account I have been told this Playbuzz quiz has similar questions. I will then add you to your house, and we will start collecting house points. It is VERRA serious. (Gryffindors ROCK btw...)
I want to thank my co-writer @classykdlady for helping me put together this week’s #TT!!! She is fabulous!!! We will continue this with more of our favorite OL characters another time.

Catastrophe
One of the unexpected benefits of being an Outlander “fruit loop” is seeing fans talk about about other shows that might not be on your radar.
@cabochonruby has already given this show a plug, but I thought I would add my 2 cents worth.
I didn’t watch the first time round, caught up on repeats after folk started raving about it. Original, funny, uncomfortable to watch sometimes. Lots of bad language and adult concepts, so not suitable for the kiddies. I love it.
Carrie Fisher has a supporting role as Rob’s Mom. It’s going to be weird? sad? I don’t know the right word to use... it’s going to be difficult watching Carrie’s last performance when Season 3 airs. Added bonus - Tobias appears briefly in Seasons 1 and 3.
I have a link to the Catastrophe Facebook page with video of the first program, with funny pop up commentary from Sharon and Rob. Couldn’t get it to load (I think the url is too long). But if anyone is interested I could try sending in DM.
If you are all ready a fan, the added commentary is nearly as good as the original script.

Voyager Book Discussion, Chapter 7
ADMIN NOTE: @cabochonruby sent me these questions late Friday night. I was going to post them this weekend but chaos erupted in the fandom and I didn’t have time to start the discussion until this (Monday) evening. To shorten this post I moved the plot summary and questions pertaining for Chapters 8-10 to a separate post (see POST). Therefore there will be two threads to this discussion. I look forward to hearing people’s responses to these questions. Thanks cabochonruby for putting this together!
╔══════════╗
PLOT SUMMARY
╚══════════╝
CHAPTER 7 - A FAITH IN DOCUMENTS begins with Bree, Roger and Claire in 1968, receiving a letter from Roger’s colleague containing pages from Lord Melton’s journal. Fiona regales them with her version of the Dunbonnet legend — a version where the Dunbonnet gives himself up and is not summarily executed but is sent to prison instead. Roger realizes that prison records could be a treasure trove of information. (More on treasure troves later.)
Roger and Claire discuss their occupational callings, and we learn the story of Frank facilitating Claire’s staying in medical school by taking on after-school childcare duties. Later that night, after Roger and Bree have retired, Claire finds the record of Jamie’s imprisonment at Ardsmuir.
Here are some jumping-off points for response to this chapter.
1968:
How did you react to Frank stepping up to help Claire stay in medical school? Did it alter your opinion of him?
How annoying is Roger being all dismissive of Fiona as only knowing books by their covers and only reading fluffy women’s magazines, meanwhile she ACTUALLY KNOWS HER STUFF about local history and legends (this one is just for me, not really a question, sorry not sorry Roger drives me up the wall a lot of the time)
