Please meet the amazing Calabar burrowing boa (Calabaria reinhardtii), that I found in the Congo rainforest. In this photo, he's waving his "false head" to fool us into eating the less important end. I might be getting a calabaria or a sand boa soon! I'm super excited as my dad works with snakes and has some extra species from a recent round of vision experiments. I'm a bit worried because I've heard that the calabaria is a picky eater and a burrowing snake, which I don't have much experience with, but hopefully I can figure out some cool habitat stuff for him to explore!!! Look forward to me posting about this rare guy and how I'm going to have him set up! I will most likely be following my dad's advice as he has been keeping snakes for over forty years, so if you see something that doesn't seem right, please trust that the snake is getting good care, based on the advice of someone who could be considered an expert!!

In occasione del XII Forum Nazionale dei Giovani Imprenditori di Confcommercio, che si è tenuto a Firenze si è tenuta la prima riunione del Consiglio Direttivo del Gruppo dei Giovani Imprenditori Fipe che ha conferito la delega territoriali Gruppo Giovani Imprenditori Fipe per il Sud all’imprenditore reggino Sasha Sorgonà. L’ideatore di Spinoza ha ottenuto la delega per Calabria, Sicilia, Basilicata e Puglia. Alla base del conferimento delle deleghe c’è la volontà di creare una rete di giovani che sia quanto più rappresentativa delle diverse realtà territoriali in modo da poter agire direttamente sul territorio. Per Sorgonà, già presidente dei Giovani Imprenditori Confcommercio Reggio Calabaria e membro del consiglio nazionale Fipe Giovani, si tratta di un ulteriore incarico di prestigio. “Ringrazio il presidente ed il consiglio nazionale per avermi affidato questa delega importante – le prime parole di Sorgonà dopo la nomina. Per affrontare i problemi con la speranza di risolverli, bisogna mettere in evidenza quelle che sono le criticità, senza nascondersi”. L’imprenditore reggino, nel presentare le linee guida alla base del nuovo incarico, punta sulla differenza ancora troppo marcate tra meridione e settentrione. “Fare impresa al Sud non è come farlo al Nord, bisogna dirlo chiaramente. Per questo motivo il mio primo intervento sarà quello di unire all’interno della Fipe tutti i giovani imprenditori del Sud che con coraggio affrontano le sfide quotidiane in territori che, salvo eccezioni, hanno numerose carenze”. “Mi riferisco in modo particolare – prosegue Sorgonà – a trasporti ed infrastrutture, che non consentono una agevole espansione nei mercati vicini. Nel meridione stanno chiudendo più del 50% delle aziende presenti sul territorio. E’ una vera e propria emergenza e come tale va affrontata. A mio parere – conclude l’imprenditore reggino – sono commercianti ed insegnanti ad avere un ruolo chiave in ottica futura. I primi devono ispirare l’idea di un lavoro equo e giusto, gli altri la cultura e il rispetto”.

The toughest snake on Earth lives in central Africa and eats baby rodents

The skin of the Calabar burrowing python (Calabaria reinhardtii), a one-meter-long snake native to equatorial Africa, may be thicker and harder to pierce than any other snake in the world, according to a study due to be published in the January issue of the Journal of Morphology. The Calabar’s armor-like casing may have evolved to ward off biting attacks by the protective mothers of its exclusive prey: the pups of burrowing rodents. Snake skin, like human skin, has an outer epidermis and a deep dermis. In snakes, scales compose the outer layer. Typically, the deeper layer in both snakes and mammals is made up of disorganized bundles of collagen, arranged like loose piles of hay. This lack of structure makes skin quite elastic, but it’s also easily punctured or sliced. The Calabar python’s skin is remarkably different. The discovery arose from a bit of grisly serendipity, recalls study co-author Bruce Young, a biophysicist at A.T. Still University in the U.S. state of Missouri.
