I subjected the Calamity Art server to this, and now I shall curse you guys here, too. Happy belated Valentine’s Day because I am the Internet Explorer of celebrational art
yesterday I reviewed a terrible tumblr post and its equally bitter reblogs, so I continued to work on this scuffed sketch on my phone (originally started on Feb 14 at a Red Lobster restaurant waiting for my food) that night to make myself feel better.

i love the empire kids so so much i feel like i am losing my gfuckinf mind. ohh my god empire kids
#do you ever think about the concept behind wildemount. it was the calamity's the final battleground it's half-ruined and scarred over#the savalirwood is mutating. the barbed fields are barren. there are ancient ruins scattered all around the continent#they weren't left on purpose but they are a warning. something something this is not a place of honor.#and the people of wildemount reflect the landscape they're suspicious and rough. the leaders of the empire and the dynasty#(meaning the cerberus assembly and leylas kryn) are both vying for war and/or power - ikithon doesn't seem to care about the war but he#is throwing children into it like logs in a bonfire. leylas is going mad. da'leth remembers the calamity! and he still wants to take down#the gods! he was at ground zero and he wants to build it up again! not to mention that delilah briarwood is also an offshoot of the#assembly. the empire! with its archmages! delilah and ikithon and da'leth! they're the rotten core of it! and all of the m9 are from#wildemount but beau and caleb are the children of the empire. beau's dad's hatred and disregard for her (and remember kamordah is said to#be dreary and largely barren and her dad had to make that deal with the hag in order to make the ground fertile enough to grow grapes in#the country in the continent of barren ground) echoes the larger problem within the empire the assembly and ikithon and how he ruined#caleb's life. the empire kids. the children of the country that encapsulates wildemount's worst parts. the savalirwood is separate from#the empire as are the barbed fields but the people who symbolize the cause and effect of the calamity are in the empire's assembly it#starts and ends with them. they're the epicenter. they're ground zero. they're the poison into the drinking water. and beau and caleb are#the victims of that. of course beau is angry of course she was cast out. of course caleb is haunted of course he was left to die. that's#what wildemount and the empire does to its children. they are two out of two million. we just happened to follow their stories#AND THAT IS WHY BEAU AND CALEB FIGHT WITH EACH OTHER LIKE THEY DO. YOU CAN'T EXPECT CHILDREN OF THE EMPIRE TO TRUST EASILY.#they were both raised on ruined ground! beau was never loved and she was thrown out. caleb was incredibly loved and he killed his parents.#that is what the empire does. and. to see them in the end. raising hell and tearing the assembly down brick by brick#it's personal for caleb and it's meaningful for beau - what happened to them will not happen to any other child within the empire#they're breaking the cycle that's been spinning on and on for nearly two thousand years#and (caleb voice) it takes time. nearly a decade down the line they'll be trudging thru a desert on another continent in search of da'leth#but. my god. they're gonna do it. you know the chernobyl sarcophagus. the structure they built to hold the radiation in. that's them#that's why they read luciens book btw. that's what they're made to do. they r both so full of hubris - beau absolutely is btw. she would#icarus herself up to the sun in a heartbeat if she was given that level of freedom you know she would and that's the kind of hubris I#mean for both of them - the stubborn desperate confidence they have that they will prove everyone wrong and break free of the cycle (they#can do it. they just can't do it alone. they need each other and a whole support system to hold them back if need be. no wax wings for you#that's why they push each other so hard. that's why they lean on each other so much. they can't do it alone. and then they do it together#and end up rocketing towards almost near-certain death together. they just wanted to know more. those two always want so much more#that's why theyve always had that 'i'll watch you if you watch me' pact. together or not at all. and it still isn't enough. empire hubris

The Doom of Aeor was not just one thing.
The Betrayer Gods, so full of hate for mortals, so full of hurt at their siblings choosing their creations over them, stepped into the world to destroy everything themselves.
The archmages built a weapon to kill the gods, because the Calamity was destroying the world.
The archmages built the God Hammer at the heart of Aeor, so that anything that went wrong with risked destroying the city.
The Prime Deities didn’t explain the threat of Predathos, and how they needed all the gods to live in order to fight it should it ever break free.
The Wildmother, scared to reveal how much the Primes and Betrayers still loved each other in spite of everything, because she wasn’t ready to be judged by her children.
The Primes not holding themselves to the same rules they placed onto Solars and mortals.
Cognouza fucking off into the Astral Sea destroyed the teleportation leylines and therefore killed any chance the Aeorians had to escape.
The Arch Heart refused to embrace Primarch Selena when she asked for forgiveness. The rejection that caused her throw the trapped sibling into the God Hammer and cast Wish.
The Arch Heart chose to save their sibling, that trapped god, instead of Counterspelling the Wish.
Primarch Selena using Wish to send knowledge of the God Hammer to every wizard still in Aeor. Wizards who might have been smaller in number had it not been for Cognouza, had they been able to leave before the knowledge was dispersed.
Asmodeus and the Betrayers, choosing to use the God Hammer to kill their siblings when their siblings refused to kill them. Asmodeus tricking them all and acquiring the scroll to the God Hammer and setting it off.
The Arch Heart, redirecting the energy of the God Hammer into the city he’d wanted to save, trading mortal lives for his and their siblings.
The gods’ inability to make peace with their own mortality. They, who in their youth, fled the only home they’d ever known, watching as Predathos consumed it, consumed their family, watching loved ones gone in a flash. Their desperate flight into Reality that forced them into their bodies forever constructed by what they felt in that moment.
Trauma born from fear born from loss born from pain born from love.

ludinus: *has an immaculate plot crafted over the course of centuries, uniting disparate factions, puppeting heads of state and tearing apart the global status quo, frightening the gods themselves*
keyleth: *desperately throwing his lieutenant' daughters, archmages' vessels, calamity-era robots, titanlets, senior citizens, and her own Special Little Boy at his feet like caltrops* okay, now try to predict this.

I think Zemniaz fell before Aeor. I can't prove it, but I can throw massive doubt on the information we've been relying on to conclude that Aeor fell first.
Brennan's said twice now that Aeor was the last flying city to fall. At first I thought maybe Brennan was leaning on qualifiers like "last great city." I wanted to sort out whether Brennan was retconning this, but considering that he's worked SO closely with Matt to prepare Downfall, I couldn't help but feel like we must have missed something.
Zemniaz has been discussed very few times in the stream. In C2E110, the Nein discussed the city after the dinner with Trent Ikithon (Beau's conspiracy board scene):
Tumblr media
Other than that it fell sometime during the Calamity, Matt didn't specify when Zemniaz crashed into the Zemni Fields.
Then In C2E125, the Nein interrogated Halas in an effort to learn more about Cognouza and Aeor. He's not very cooperative given that the Nein didn't help him out of the gem when they first found him.
Tumblr media
At the beginning of the conversation, Halas claims that Aeor fell "before my time." Straightforward information that no one did an insight check on. After that, Caleb suggests that if Halas answers three questions, he'll see about answering more questions in "different circumstances," implying that he'll help Halas out of the soul gem he's trapped in.
Tumblr media
Halas said that he's from Zemniaz, he grew into the belief that he could only rely on himself, and then he abandoned Exandria -- presumably to live in his Heirloom Sphere. He also makes no mention of the city's destruction, but that makes sense given that the Nein were asking about Aeor.
Now, if we stopped there, then we could conclude that Zemniaz fell during the calamity after Aeor. But you know what?
Halas is a fucking liar.
In Episode 125, Matt responded to Caleb's 19 insight check:
Tumblr media
Explorer's Guide to Wildemount, Chapter 1: Story of Wildemount, Section 1: History of Wildemount, Subsection: Age of Arcanum, Page 12:
Powerful Archmages such as Vecna the Whispered One and Halas Lutagran began to carve their paths into history during this era of unbridled magical experimentation.
"Before my time" my ass. He was already a prominent mage in the Age of Arcanum, before the Calamity even started, and certainly before Aeor fell. This fucking fucker lied to us and we all took him at his word.
I don't have an answer whether Matt intended for that to be misinformation or if it was an unintentional contradiction. The Explorer's Guide to Wildemount came out on March 17, 2020 and Episode 125 aired on February 11, 2021 -- nearly a year later. Episode 83 (when the Nein met Halas) aired on October 31, 2019. I don't think that Matt would make that mistake given that he had been done or nearly done writing EGtW when Halas first showed up. I'm leaning on the side that it was probably intentional misinformation. After all, Halas was exceptionally distrusting, and he couldn't know why anyone would ask him about Aeor. He knew Aeor had been destroyed by the gods; do you think a hermit archmage is going to trust random bozos who found his gem and started pestering him about it?
Information from Halas can't be trusted, so it doesn't inform us one way or the other. Thus, I wouldn't say that Brennan is retconning so much as clarifying an unknown. And giving us more reason to realize Halas is a fucking liar.
In conclusion, if any of the lore you're relying on came from Halas, maybe add an asterisk to it.

Questions I’d have for the Gods if I was Dorian Storm and I had Commune
DAWNFATHER
1. During the Calamity, were you physically capable of killing the Betrayer Gods?
Pelor: ###.
Yes, that’s what I thought.
2. If Ludinus was my beloved brother, whom I loved more than anyone else in the world, would you still ask me to strike him down in order to save all of you?
Pelor: ###.
of course you would. You couldn’t do the same to your family, but of course you’d ask us to do it all the same. You’re never beholden to your own rules, are you? That’s not my last question, actually.
3. If all of us mortals banded together and promised to only stop Predathos if in return you finally killed the Betrayer Gods, especially the Spider Queen, would you take the deal?
Pelor: ### ##### ## #######-
actually I’ll just take a yes or no.
Pelor: ### ######## #####-
if you cannot stay your pride even in the end times, I will leave you to your thoughts.
EVERLIGHT
1. My brother lies dead at the hands of the Queen of Spiders. One of my closest friends has been enslaved and corrupted by her. In the last thousand years since you spared the Betrayer Gods, countless mortals have been enslaved, tortured, and killed by the Betrayers. Many suffer eternally in the afterlives of the monsters you call family. Tell me, do you think your life and the lives of your “family” are worth more than the lives and souls of every mortal harmed by your siblings?
Sarenrae: ##, ## ###### ###
but you doomed them anyways to save your family and yourselves. You didn’t kill Aeor for us.
2. “THOSE WHO ARE BEYOND REDEMPTION, WHO REVEL IN SLAUGHTER AND REMORSELESS EVIL, MUST BE DISPATCHED WITH SWIFT JUSTICE.” You did not follow this tenet of yours during the Calamity for your own brothers and sisters, but perhaps Gods do not need to follow their own commands. I ask you now, should we stop Predathos because it and Ludinus are beyond redemption?
Sarenrae: …###.
3. She was beyond redemption too. The weaver of webs and chaos and corruption. The Queen of Spiders. Yet you said you loved her in Aeor, and in the end you and the rest of them spared her. Do you love her more than us?
Sarenrae: ##, ### ####.
i think you’re a liar
ARCHEART
1. Well? Aren’t you going to strike me down?
Corellon: …#### ## ### ####?
i’m a wielder of the arcane arts that you blessed mortals with, and I’m someone who might have a say in your potential demise. You destroy people like that, along with their homes and cities and families, don’t you? You gave us the power of creation and then cut us down like insects when we created something that might threaten you, when we drew outside the lines of what you intended for us to create. So I ask again, are you going to strike me down like Archmage Selena Erenves?
Corellon: # ##### ###### ### #### ### #### ######, ### ### ### ####.
2. You are the god of arcane magic and creation, you gave us the gift of creation, yet you cut Aeor down for what they made. Answer me honestly, in the present day are there things we might create that you would still stop us from creating?
Corellon: ##### ##
3. You seemed tired in Aeor, like you were ready to die. Of course when push actually came to shove you suddenly realized you wanted to live, badly enough that you slaughtered a whole city for it. I ask you now that death is once again on the horizon for you and your siblings, would you welcome the peace of oblivion?
Corellon: # #### # #### ## ####### ### # ###### ## ######. ## #### ######.
QUEEN OF SPIDERS
1. If we stopped Predathos from being released, would you let Opal go?
Lolth: ## ###### ###
i didn't think so.
2. Do you think it will be painful and agonizing when you are consumed?
Lolth: ## ### ##### ###'## ##### ## ##### ##? ### ####, Cyrus ### ###### #### ### ###### ###, ## ###.
3. Do you think Ethodok and Vordo were afraid and in pain when you let Predathos devour them?
Lolth: ...###'## ### ##### ## ######## ##### #####.
i'm not the only one who failed his siblings.

I drew abit,it isnt the best since i usually dont draw smaller sketches or drawings so its abit...childlike (the expressions).
I drew Yharim without his helmet,i cant remember where i saw a post with the face i drew but my memory is vague.Looks like he'll kill me the moment he sees me.
I drew a sigil that circles around ceaseless void, which prevents it from breaking free and wreaking havoc like the unstable portal it is.(A headcannon if you will)
Yharon is soft boi,i big fluffy dragon that is loafing. Also,i drew if he looked human, looks weird but eh,i'll maybe draw a full body in the future.
Calamitas,i didnt really have any ideas for ehr so i drew the first thing i came up with, floating in the air.
Permafrost looks funky,i dont know how to draw old people.
Doctor Bright-i mean,Draedon was the easiest, read a bit on the picture, mabye you find something interesting.(LORE?!!!).
D.O.G. is very hungry, feed him the soul of providence, woof.
Signus was...weird to draw, when i was trying to draw his face it looked way too soft,so i drew like a circle mouth or something.
Storm weaver preparing to strike,he makes a move,He is playing 'Intercontinental ballistic missile'.
Statis and Braelor were the last ones drawn,so they dont have much room.Statis was easier, but Braelor looks like a boy and not a man (i seriously need to practice drawing faces and expressions)
Ill maybe finish the permafrost plushie during next week, cant promise.

Okay, so if that's actually the Calamity Ludinus is talking about and not the fall of Molaesmyr...
... thatd make Essek's 'well MAYBE you should try the power of FRIENDSHIP' even funnier
Hotboi stood up to an archmage, likely a thousand years old, who survived the Calamity and is actively trying to kill the gods, and told him to try friends sometime

cr downfall
I am enjoying downfall so much (not a surprise! calamity was also excellent). I am so curious about how the events of the final episode will play out -- I think that Trist/the Everlight is the only one who knows that there's a secret sect of true believers who have corrupted the god-killer to only target Betrayer gods? The archmage with her currently... how quickly will she figure out that she's traveling beside the Betrayers as well as Primes?
I'm also wondering about the Divine Gate and how it truly gets put into place. Because right now, the issue is that the Primes are trapped between two things that they love -- their children vs their siblings. The Divine Gate makes it so they can choose both/neither instead of either/or. It makes it so that their fights with their siblings are less likely to hurt their children. If I recall correctly, the lore is that the Prime deities alone created the Gate, but seeing how both sides of the fight clearly long to be family again, I wonder if it maybe was a collaboration -- a compromise. Because a large part of the Betrayers' beef is that they believe that the Primes have chosen the mortals over them.
I am also thinking about how Asmodeus's perspective on what he did to Sarenrae must differ so strongly from how she views it -- he views mortals as puppets, as 'a bad first draft' (to quote EXU: Calamity), and as something beneath him that his siblings care about too much. So when he killed all her followers, to him that was less like murder and more like drowning his sibling's ant farm so that she would stop obsessing over it and would pay attention to him instead; he knows that he's killing something but doesn't consider it on the same moral level as killing one of his siblings would be. He knows that it'll hurt her but believes that she needs to get over it and move on and care about things that really matter. Meanwhile, we see how Sarenrae appears to be among the gods who are most willing to fully and completely engage with mortals.
Creating the Divine Gate means that Asmodeus can't drown any more ant farms but also potentially means that Sarenrae has more space to pay attention to him.
