PERSONALITY:

on a good day, theo is mellow, easygoing, ready to take their campers on a midday swim and goof around by pushing one of them off the pier when they aren't looking. theo is remarkably empathetic, even though this may not be evident in their blank face, a good listener, who will sit up with you until three AM talking about hopes and dreams. they're good at noticing things that others don't and love taking people on guided hikes.

on a bad day, theo is judgmental and pretentious. their sarcasm can turn biting and they can cross the line between joking and mean. they are not an extrovert by nature, and their social battery can flip quickly. aren't they lucky that mostly, when you're a little mean to kids, they just think you're funny? aren't they unlucky their campers like to make a game of who can piss them off the fastest?

BACKGROUND:

theo did not grow up going to cooper creek. in fact, theo did not go to summer camp at all.

poor would probably be an exaggeration, but theo's family was certainly not wealthy. summers were instead spent at the public library, the community pool, and by the time they were 15, at a string of mall jobs with different neon-colored uniforms.

they managed to get a scholarship to UC Boulder- did they go because they smoke a shitload of weed or did they start smoking a shitload of weed once they got to colorado? chicken and the egg. but theo was happy to pick up a major in english, and while they weren't the most diligent student, they enjoyed their readings and turned in fairly good writing.

confronted by the age-old question: what do you do with a BA in english? theo is still pondering the answer. right now it looks like it's " go to grad school ". but for now theo is content to return to their summer job at cooper creek they'd found on indeed last summer, looking for any position that would get them away and pay their bills for a little bit.

BIOGRAPHY

the ballad of duckie pham starts with a chance, however impulsive and hopeful, given to two people; two polar opposites. a surfer, just starting to rise through international ranks, and an honors interior design major home for summer break. a chance meeting at a diner when he happened to be in town for a competition. was it impulsive for them to stay out all night, talking to each other when they were complete strangers? definitely. did they care? not at all. duckie’s older brother was born nine months and some change later and though her parents weren’t actually married until a few years ago, that hopeless romanticism became a constant theme in duckie’s life.

as she grew older, while all of her friends spent their time in the middle of crazy schemes to try to get boyfriends and girlfriends (often that she came up with), duckie was learning how to kickflip, running around filming everything around her, teaching herself how to play bad covers on her dad’s old acoustic guitar, and surfing newcastle’s impeccable waves any chance she got. by far the closest to her heart, surfing took up the majority of her attention and love. until her dad retired from competition and opened his own surf shop with duckie’s uncle, duckie spent every summer chasing the greatest waves in the world with him as he made a name for himself. even when she was thousands of miles from home, she learned how to make friends everywhere they went. anywhere could feel like home.

when her father did retire, they went back to living in newcastle year-round and duckie’s adventures around the globe suddenly stopped. she was sixteen, freshly blossomed in the ocean surf, and ready to fall in love with her hometown again. what she hadn’t expected was for her to fall in love. she had her heart broken three times by the time she finished school and left home, but that never stopped her from falling again. every summer in newcastle, duckie was determined to have more adventures and make more memories than the last. these hometown summers had summers in portugal and brazil and south africa to compete with, after all. but somehow, they managed to. every single year.

despite everything, when she was twenty, duckie started to feel stagnant; complacent; bored. it seemed newcastle wasn’t enough for her uncontrollable wanderlust anymore. deeply in love with one of her best friends, duckie followed her heart and followed them to los angeles. without any real job experience or great ideas, she went back to what she did best and started entering in local surf competitions; getting her name out there, just like her pops had. the next couple of years were less of a whirlwind and more of a tornado. confessions and love and breakups and parties, parties, parties. the year she would start at camp, it all became a little too much for duckie and when she needed to get away, camp answered her call. one half-serious offer from a friend to join them at camp, and duckie was jetting off to florida to test her skills as a counsellor at cooper creek.

camp was everything she loved about the summers around the world with her dad and the legendary summers in her hometown all rolled into one. everything about camp suited duckie. when she’s there, the rest of the world melts away. all her usual stresses are replaced with cackling laughter, childish pranks, and pure possibility. after all, anything can happen at camp. for as much chaos as she causes there, camp centers and grounds her for the rest of the year when she’s back to surfing, traveling endlessly, and helping out her dad and uncle with their surf shop in newcastle (her home base once again) every chance she gets. newcastle is her her hometown and very soul, so cooper creek must really be something special to compete with it in duckie’s heart like it does.

when this summer rolled around, she was already itching to get out of newcastle and get back to florida. back to summer crushes, acting like an idiot, and showing everyone what duckie pham is made of.

A BIT OF A BACKSTORY:

toby is the youngest of a big family and was born and raised in jacksonville, florida. i’m talking like six or seven kids and their father walked out before toby was born so his existence was not necessarily celebrated. he was constantly dragged around by his older siblings when their mom was busy ... they just kind of treated his existence like a hassle. he was close with all of his siblings, but none of them were entirely friendly with each other since yk ... who wants to bring your seven year old brother out with your friends.

toby had a good time though hanging out with people nearly a decade older than them and hanging by themself a lot, skating around town and loitering were their go to. they craved close friendship after seeing what their siblings had, but kind of stuck out at school like a sore thumb for being the youngest of the park kids. everybody knew them already and they hardly had a chance to make a name for themself. plus, when people (namely his family) made it clear to toby that they didn’t want them around, they learned to stick by themself and not branch out as a survival tactic.

but there was a glimmer of hope lmao ... when everyone got just a bit too busy in the summers, they resulted to sending toby to camp cooper creak. honestly <3 this place was everything to toby. they had attention, close friends who actually cared about him truly this dude was zooming in 2x speed. going absolutely crazy bonkers diving off the rocks and making the most of every moment. they attended for around three years before their family decided to stop sending them and in those years they missed it more than anything :/

the years after camp cooper creak were just a blur for toby, trying to find something that sparked joy like attending camp did. they wound up getting into graphic design while in high school and somehow getting a decent enough scholarship to a nearby college. like yes they totally submitted the graphic design is my passion meme for at least seven projects but toby ended up graduating through a blur of partying and dorm loneliness and simply yolo-ing everything. he’s currently going through a bout of life where he has no idea what to do - no career goals or people to follow - and believes that the place that brought his favorite childhood memories will help boost his bank account and provide him with some direction. maybe part of them is really putting off adult life too, and they just want to latch onto their childhood while they still can.

PERSONALITY:

no but fr this dude is just a little creature. kind of is just letting go of everything he previously knew and is striving to have the time of his life.

SPONTANEOUS: very impulsive and always down to have fun. really doesn’t put a single thought behind their actions. i mean i listed this as a positive trait, but sometimes this bites them in the ass because they don’t think things through. if your muse is looking for some trouble to get into ... hit toby up

PERCEPTIVE: having been a side/background character their entire life, toby is used to picking up on cues that people give off. i don’t want to call them a #empath but they are very emotionally smart and can relate to and understand other people deeply. they can make you feel like there can be a hundred people in the room–

SPINELESS: really just lacks discipline and more often than not, the strength to be a better person. gets a bit cowardly when it comes to owning up to their own actions so they prefer to shimmy out of it all

VOLATILE: big emotional shifts. this includes just straight chilling to dangerous action, having a good time to staring out the window of a cabin longingly ... also has some temper issues

growing up, he was always the type of kid that would do the worst to get attention (lowkey crimes ... absolute chaos and the like) and sometimes he still falls into the habit of acting out to get attention or honestly just does it for fun

for sure is the type to start drama in the group chat by photoshopping two counselors together and giving them a ship hashtag. mind you i have no photoshop skills so this is going to be extremely fun if/when this happens (if there is a ship out there that you all want this to happen with then hit me up HEWJKRHWEJ)

they are 100% the counselor that loses a kid in his group or takes the kids on a 20 mile walk to sneak over to walmart to get ice cream

generally though, toby is overall pretty sweet behind his little shit antics. they might like lose a camper every once in a while but as a friend they’re very dependable and loyal. they really aren’t mean at all but sometimes their humor can come off as a little intimidating or off putting

(drugs tw) for another glimpse, from the questions on the app, the three items that toby packed and couldn’t survive without are pot brownies (burnt and stale), a big blanket he always has wrapped around himself in the line for breakfast (good luck getting him up in the morning), and a journal where he’s constantly drawing/writing shitty poetry. he’d be the first to die in a horror film because he’d jump straight into the danger without a second thought. like oh a sketchy house they stumble upon in the woods? he’s going in. creepy groaning coming from it? even better.

WANTED CONNECTIONS:

a bff from when toby was at camp as a kid <3 they both were campers and maybe they lost contact over the years and reunited this year now that toby is working at camp. they could either still fit together perfectly or maybe your muse grew/changed over the years and now things are super awkward and horrible.

a fellow counselor who ends up picking up toby’s slack from losing track of his kids/venturing off to do things when he’s supposed to be working. maybe your muse has worked at the camp longer and was assigned to toby to make sure he’s staying on track or they just feel like they need to overstep and do this. could 100% lead to bickering bc toby probably doesn’t think he’s doing anything wrong really

people who knew his siblings. like there are at least 6 of them there could be some connection even if your character is living across the country or something. exes, bffs, older characters he hung out with when he was a kid. maybe they’re on really good terms and still vibe with each other or even not. we can for sure figure something out.

people toby knew at college? roommates ... classmates ... people that tried to befriend them despite the fact that they stuck with themself which could make things awkward.

exes ... unrequited love ... just give me romance. toby 100% would fall in love with a muse who doesn’t give him the time of day. which could lead to enemies to lovers? i don’t know. even just like fun puppy love. i’m big on chemistry so maybe if our muses have it we can just go wild and see what happens

someone who toby looks up to ... might be a replacement sibling. bonus points if this muse is not a good person and toby just kind of follows in the bad influence foot steps.

just friends. best friends. please. people that sneak out of the cabins late at night with toby. laugh at their super stupid memes. thing 1 and thing 2 energy
