Chapter 05: Sharp Steel
Meliza and E’thrus pulled into Livik’s driveway as more snow began to fall and the sky became unexpectedly darker. Meliza grabbed her gun and marched towards the front door with E’thrus standing close by her side. No lights were on and the heaters outside were off. It was as if the power had been shut down completely. Meliza tried the handle, but it was locked. She turned to E’thrus and pointed at the door with her eyes. He nodded then proceeded to tear the door off from its hinges with his claws. He looked at her and bowed. “Ladies first.”
Meliza turned on a flashlight she had taped to the gun, and both poked their heads through the doorframe and surveyed the area inside. Nothing out of the ordinary besides the darkness so the two slowly made their way further in, creak by creak against the floorboards. E’thrus could see everything clear as day and saw a shadow move from the corner of his eye. He nudged Meliza’s shoulder.
“Someone’s here.” He whispered.
The moment he said that a shadowy blur came from the darkness and the shine of a sword blade emerged.
Sparks flew as E’thrus caught the sword with his hand an inch away from Meliza’s neck and got a clear view of their new adversary. Meliza taking a moment to process what happened, stepped back, and aimed her gun at his head. It was a gray wolf, with glowing yellow eyes. When the light shined in his face both saw one peculiar detail, however. He had black sclera and claws, just like E’thrus.
E’thrus roared as he proceeded to yank the sword out of the wolf’s hand, grabbed him by the neck and slammed him to the floor with a ferocious snarl.
The wolf got a good look at E’thrus. “Another Reaper?” He questioned. “Why would he send another one? We had it covered.”
E’thrus was too overwhelmed with fury about him attempting to attack Meliza to even question what he had said and was about to rip this wolf’s throat out.
Meliza dropped the shotgun, and her limp body was lifted off the floor. E’thrus looked behind him and saw a white tigress with the same kind of eyes as him and the wolf, only they had blue irises.
“DON’T YOU TOUCH HER!” E’thrus bellowed.
He let go of the wolf and tackled the tigress through a wood pillar. After both crashed to the floor, E’thrus heard the wolf rushing him, so he grabbed the tigress by the face and threw her at him.
“Recoil.” The tigress said in a composed manner.
The wolf dived through the air, caught the tigress by the arms and threw her back at E’thrus. A glimmer had blinded E’thrus for a moment but at the last possible second he dodged an elongated sword blade that was thrown at him. E’thrus saw the sword had been lodged in the wood flooring but then had his head stomped into the floor when the tigress’ feet struck his face. She bounced off E’thrus and landed on the hilt of her sword.
There was no time to rest for her though, as a substantially pissed off E’thrus had managed to appear right in front of her, claws and maw opened, ready to rip and tear anything that stood in his way. She gasped and used her sword to try and stop E’thrus’ assault. Sparks were flying left and right as his claws met with her blade, illuminating the darkness with strobing flashes of molten fire.
The wolf tried to flank E’thrus and slashed at his neck, but had his blade shattered into pieces when E’thrus bit down on the sword. The wolf was then kicked through a window and slammed onto the hood of the truck outside. The tigress stepped back with her sword at the ready but was not engaging any further. E’thrus spit metal shards out his mouth and Meliza managed to get ahold of her gun again and aimed it at the Tigress.
“Reaper Unit, stand down.” She ordered.
Meliza and E’thrus were confused.
“What the FUCK is a Reaper Unit?!” Meliza shouted. “Who the Hell are you?”
“Reaper Unit: 06. Yinna Cangbai. State your unit number, Reaper.” She said.
“I don’t fucking have one!” E’thrus yelled and charged Yinna.
She was fast though. She evaded E’thrus and kicked Meliza out of the way, stealing her shotgun in the process, aiming it directly at his head. E’thrus managed to twist his body and duck underneath the barrel as it went off and blew a hole in the roof. It was only a ruse though, as her sword shimmered and slashed at E’thrus’ stomach. Blood spilled out of his wound, and he hit the floor with a loud thud.
“E’thrus!” Meliza cried out.
Yinna threw the shotgun to the side and sheathed her blade. Her ear twitched as she heard E’thrus growling. She turned around and there he stood, in the dark with glowing red eyes of fury. Visible entrails could be seen hanging out of the wound Yinna had made, but it did not stop him one bit. His wounds sealed themselves up. She readied her sword, and he charged her again.
A gust of icy wind came crashing through the front door and a massive wall of ice erupted between the two, halting E’thrus in his tracks and shocking Yinna. Before E’thrus could retaliate any further, he was swiftly knocked through the ice wall from the blunt end of a staff. Hauxil ran through the front door and grabbed Yinna by the wrist.
“Come on, we have to go!” He told her and made a break for the woods.
Meliza ran to E’thrus and brought him back up on his feet.
“What just hit me?” He asked.
Meliza pointed to a white fox in a mask standing in front of the doorway. “Him.”
The fox did not make a sound but E’thrus could smell a familiar scent coming from him. Dried blood and bleach.
“And who… hah… are you?” E’thrus asked in an exhausted manner.
No answer. He just vanished when a gust of snow encircled him.
“You gonna go after them?” Meliza asked.
E’thrus picked up the shotgun, reloaded it and gave it back to Meliza. “This is why I wanted you to stay back at the apartment.” He said. “I’m taking you home.”
Yinna and Hauxil were running as fast as they could through the woods.
“Hauxil! Why the hell did you attack them?” She asked angrily.
The wolf rubbed his cheek. “Because he saw me and was going to strike first! I saw it in his eyes.”
“I wonder if Director Hughes has rogue personnel. Would he even allow that?”
“I doubt it.” He said. “I also doubt that Fennec is a normal Reaper. Reaper’s don’t heal that fast.”
The two managed to reach a cliff side to catch their breath. The white fox appeared before them and did not say a word. He just pulled out a card from under his mask and flung it towards Yinna’s feet. It was a nine of diamonds.
“Heh. Why so quiet, Ghosts?” Hauxil asked.
Yinna picked up the card and on its back were coordinates to the abandoned prison Hughes was at and they saw flames roaring high into the sky in that direction.
“That must be where he is.” Yinna sighed. “I told you that beam and explosion we saw earlier had something to do with him.”
