NGC 7822 - The Question Mark Nebula This nebula is found in the constellation Cepheus. This is another target inspired by @robert_leach90 that I was finally able to get started on. Because it's more North then East, this is currently a difficult target for me, and that doesn't include the clouds I had rolling in! The Orion and Running Man Nebulas by Amazing Sky Photography The Orion Nebula, aka Messier 42, at centre, with the blue Running Man Nebula (NGC 1973-5-7) above it. The smaller nebula attached to the top edge of M42 is M43. The blue star cluster at top above the Running Man is NGC 1981; the loose star cluster below M42 is NGC 1980. This is a stack of 8 x 5-minute exposures with the Canon EOS Ra mirrorless camera at ISO 800 unfiltered, blended with a stack of 6 x 8-minute exposures at ISO 1600 but through the dual-band Optolong L-Enhance filter that records the faint red nebulosity very well. Blending and masking the filtered with the unfiltered shots allows the faint red nebulosity to come through while retaining the blues, magentas and even subtle greens of the bright nebulosity and the blue of the hot stars as recorded by the “white-light” images. These two sets of long exposures are blended using luminosity masks with a set of 6 x 60-second exposures and 4 x 30-second exposures, both at ISO 400, for recording the bright core of M42 with its Trapezium stars that would otherwise be overexposed into a bright mass with only long exposures. The short exposures were all unfiltered. I applied a high-pass sharpening filter to snap up contrast in the dark lanes. All were through the SharpStar HNT150 Hyperbolic Newtonian Astrograph at its native fast focal ratio of f/2.8 for a focal length of 420mm. Taken from home in Alberta on January 28, 2020. Testing the Canon EOS Ra: Why It’s Worth it for Astrophotographers

Trevor Jones of AstroBackyard just recently got his hands on a specific niche video camera that will be incredibly fascinating to astrophotographers… … and almost no one else: the Canon EOS Ra . In the video above, he takes it out for a test shoot to flaunt the 2 functions that set this cam apart when it pertains to severe night sky shooting.

The full-frame mirrorless EOS Ra was launched silently and didn't trigger much of a stir when it was, for the easy factor that it's an extremely specific niche item. There are just 2 distinctions in between the routine Canon EOS R and the EOS Ra: increased level of sensitivity to the 656nm hydrogen-alpha wavelength, and a 30x live view focus help mode. For the majority of us, neither of these will work (in truth, the increased 656nm level of sensitivity might destroy some pictures) however for astrophotography, these functions assist validate the additional $800 it'll cost you to get the EOS Ra over its non-astro brother or sister.

As Jones shows in the video above, the 30x live view mode makes pin-point astrophotography focus a breeze, and as soon as he connects the cam to a star tracker, he's able to shoot a stunning picture of the Heart and Soul nebula in more brilliant color thanks to the cam's 4x level of sensitivity to that hydrogen-alpha wavelength.

The Sadr Region - the heart of the Cygnus Constellation . Well, it's been a long time coming, since Nov 29, 2021 to be exact, but I finally got back out with my telescope to take pictures of deep space. Getting everything setup to be able to do so was nerve-racking - it seemed every issue I ever had to troubleshoot showed up in one day - but totally worth it. Part of me wondered if I would ever get back out to take images and I am really glad the answer is yes! . This image combines data I took last year (46 x 300s on June 11) with data I took this year (27 x 300s) and is my most successful combination for the tine between the two data sets. If I get some clear nights soon, I will most likely add more data to this set, so we will see! . Cocoon Nebula - IC 5146 Located in Cygnus, the IC 5146 is a reflection and emission nebula. I finally decided to put everything together on the Celestron EdgeHD 8 for deep space and do some testing to make sure my guiding worked and that I could reach focus. Guiding was the easy part, focus was the pain. I finally got it and on the first night I captured m27 amd NGC 869, those I will post soon. On night two, I decided to shoot the Cocoon on both my Edge as well as my Meade 80mm Triplet. This here is from the Edge, and though I had some focus drift in the middle of my imaging (can't seem to get the auto focus to do its thing when using my Canon), I am happy with the result, especially considering I did not use any filters. . M31 - The Andomeda Galaxy I have been attempting processes of this target since I began dabbling in astrophotography, 10 months on this data imparticular. Many people have given me tips and ideas, and they have all helped, but learning how to remove stars to process the target and the stars separately has finally given me a final product I am happy with. Images were stacked in DeepSkyStacker, initial color balance and stretch in Siril. Used Siril to help balance background. Processed in Photoshop. . Rosette Nebula - NGC 2244 It has been a while since I have taken any new data (that will change soon), but I found an image I took that I had not posted before. All of my previous Rosette Nebula data was taken with the Meade 80mm Triplet, but this was taken with the Radian Raptor 61. I only got 90 min worth of data on the target, and it was more of a test to see what field of view I could get with the raptor. The Bubble Nebula - NGC 7635 I've been shooting this target for a while now in a widefield format -> 480mm, 380mm, and 275mm. Now I've shot it at around 1400mm. I finally got another filter drawer and I decided to test out how long I could shoot using just a guidescope and the longest comfortable time was around 180s. I plan on returning the Canon to the Raptor but I'm glad I was able to get the EdgeHD 8 figured out for the most part. . The Pleiades - Messier 45 This was the last target I was able to get before my old laptop died last November. I was able to salvage it with some stock flats and dark flats I took while trying to test a different way to take flats. I didn't like the results of those tests BUT it enabled me to salvage the hour and a half I spent on this target. The Andromeda Galaxy - m31 If you follow me you know that m31, along with the Orion Nebula is one of my great nemesis. I never can seem to get it "right," and to get it better you "need" to do some sort of HDR composite or such. Since I am trying to learn Pixinsight, I decided to throw myself a curveball and attempt adding in Ha from data taken with and L-eXtreme filter with the data I took last year. Unfortunately, the data taken with the L-eXtreme was botched due to a floating piece of dust that moved from frame to frame. Regardless, I gave it a go! Thanks to a tutorial by Visible Dark, I had a direction to take. It's not perfect, it needs more and better Ha data, and I probably need to retake my L-Pro data, but for a first go, I'll take it. . Bubble Nebula & Nova Cassiopeia 2021 - Discovered March 18, 2021, the new Nova in the constellation Cassiopeia is still bright another to distinguish itself as something a little different when imaged or viewed through a telescope. Now designated V1405 Cas, it is close both the Bubble Nebula - NGC 7635 and M52. Ever since I heard of its its discovery I wanted to image it, especially since it was discovered on my late father's birthday. With it rising in the Northeast, I finally had a clear night where it qas above the houses and trees. First three images are finally processes - normal, starless and inverted. Orion & Horsehead Nebula - This is a reprocess of my data from March using some new techniques learned from @iceman_astro (a processing master imo). Thanks to @optcorp for sharing this as well announcing the availability of the TPO Ultrawide 180! I always struggle with m42 (Orion) because of the core and trying to keep the trapezium visible. This affects how much I can stretch the image to pull out the surrounding dust (and there is a lot!). Using some different techniques in stretching, I was able to keep the core more under control while bringing out the surrounding dust. This process is almost an accident because I was trying two different ways to fix some of the background gradient and I looked up and boom, thus appeared! The first two images are the reprocess, one with stars, one without. The last is the original process I posted back in March. . 120 x 60s 60 x 10s Darks, flats, dark flats and biases for both sets .
