When, Why and How to Change Your Transmission Fluid in Porsche
Tumblr media
Transmission related problems have become common in most of the cars. A substance which keeps the transmission parts protected is transmission fluid. When this fluid gets older in your transmission or gearbox, it loses some of its properties and has to be replaced. In this article you will get to know why, when and how you can replace the transmission fluid in your Porsche car.
Why do you have to replace the transmission fluid?
First you need to know about the role of transmission fluid in vehicles. Transmission fluid is a transparent, red coloured fluid used in your transmission for the purpose of lubrication of moving parts, prevention of overheating and increase longevity of the gear box. It helps the gearbox to carry out its work smoothly and effortlessly. Transmission fluid is like a tonic for gear box. The transmission fluid also has validity. If it becomes too old, used or impure, then it has to be changed. As the transmission fluid flows throughout the transmission, dirt and debris may get accumulated inside it with time, also older fluids fail to carry out their work effectively. Replacing the transmission fluid makes the transmission last longer and you will not have to take your car to diagnose transmission failure. Using the same fluid for years without changing it will cause the transmission to slip, the gears will get worn out and overheat, then the transmission may fail.
When to replace the transmission fluid?
Generally in Porsche cars, the transmission fluid is to be replaced once for every 30000 miles. In some models, it is recommended to replace the fluid for every 100000 miles. But the life of the fluid also depends on how often you use your car. Here are some signs that your transmission fluid needs replacement.
The colour of the fluid becomes dark brown or light pink, opaque or becomes cloudy or dirt and debris or other residues in the fluid.
Transmission begins to slip
Unusual grinding sounds from transmission.
Transmission begins to overheat
Also note that you have to also replace the transmission fluid filter with the fluid. The filter lasts for 30000-50000 miles.
How to change your transmission fluid?
To change the fluid you need to have automatic service transmission kit for your Porsche model. This kit has all those parts that are to be installed after replacement. You must have the following tools - 240Torx, level, 17 mm hex, 10 mm socket/ratchet, torque wrench, bead thermocouple digital temperature sensor, catch tray, lint free towels, gravity oil fill. You will get these all from local auto parts stores.
Steps
1.  The vehicle is raised and the under plastic shield id removed to access transmission pan
2.  Level on the oil pan is placed to check if the car is level, fore and aft, side to side.
3.  Then drain the fluid by opening the transmission drain plug
4.  To reduce spillage and drain more fluid, pan is made to tilt down towards the drain by loosening the pan bolts.
5.  Other pan bolts are also to be removed. You will see three bolts that attach filter to the valve body. You have to unbolt them to remove the filter along with seal O ring.
6.  New filter is installed and bolted. Then new gasket is to be installed.
7.  The transmission pan is reinstalled and use thread locker while bolting the old bolts.
8.   Pour the fluid through fill hole till it drips from the fill. The fluid should be of 3-4 liters.
9.   Start the engine and allow it to idle. Adding of fluid should be continued.
10.  Shift the gear lever from park to D, wait for 3 seconds, then turn it to R and wait for 5 seconds.
11.  Engine should idle and check the fluid temperature by the temperature sensor while adding the fluid. Pouring of fluid should continue till it drips from the hole and the temperature comes near to 40 degree C.
12.  Put the hole plug with a sealing ring and torque it to 70Nm.
You should be very care full while following these steps of changing the fluid. Never work under the car if you are alone.
Conclusion
If you do not get the tools, then you can get the work done in authorized service stations for Porsche. If you take your car for transmission service then the transmission fluid change will be done in an affordable price.

When to Call a Professional for Mercedes Torque Converter Problems?
Tumblr media
Does your vehicle have trouble staying in a particular gear? Would you believe it if we tell you that this is a sign of torque converter failure??? Yup, you read that right… The torque converter is the centerpiece of your Mercedes' automatic transmission unit. And, its failure can contribute to gear slipping among other problems.
But, how can you tell if your torque converter has a fault that needs to be addressed immediately :(:(:( Well, there are signs that you can watch for; some of which are mentioned in this blog post. Please take a look…
Torque Converter: The Part That Allows Your Car to Shift Automatically
The torque converter—the nucleus of your Mercedes' automatic transmission unit—does all the hard work to ensure smooth shifting between gears. It does that by converting power from the prime mover or the engine into hydraulic pressure. And, as far as its anatomy is concerned, the torque converter is a fairly complex part made up of many different parts like a pump/impeller, turbine, stator, one-way-clutch, lock-up clutch, thrust bearing, etc…
Reasons Why Your Mercedes’ Torque Converter May Fail
The torque converter, as we have discussed earlier, is a very complex part made up of many different parts and it has to go through a lot… to provide the driver with a smooth driving experience. One of the following problems is often attributed to torque converter malfunction in Mercedes;
Reason #1- Broken internal part
More often than not... the torque converter malfunctions due to a fault in one of its core components. If one of them starts acting up, its impact will be reflected in the overall functionality of your vehicle's transmission. You will need to take apart the torque converter to locate and replace the faulty part.
Reason #2- Low or contaminated fluid
Another explanation as to why your Mercedes' torque converter may behave erratically is that you have not changed the transmission fluid for a while now or the transmission is running low on fluid. In either case, check on your Mercedes' transmission fluid quality and quantity periodically.
Reason #3- Bad clutch solenoid
For the torque converter to function smoothly, its clutch solenoid must be in good working order. If there is a fault in the clutch solenoid, the torque converter will act up and may stop working altogether. A fault in the clutch solenoid can contribute to several other problems as well.
Signs Your Mercedes' Torque Converter Needs Help From Pros
#1- Sluggish performance
Since the torque converter plays a vital role in allowing the transmission to automatically shift between gears; if it starts acting up, the first problem you'll experience is a drop in engine performance. This problem will only get worse over time, so act quickly and get your Mercedes’ torque converter tested by a professional.
#2- Shifting-related problems
Yes... If your vehicle's torque converter is faulty then you will have to deal with all kinds of shifting problems. So, if your Mercedes’ is not shifting to a specific gear or slips as it shifts between gears; have a professional check on the torque converter. If you see any flaw, get it fixed as soon as possible.
#3- Transmission overheating
So, the transmission temperature of your Mercedes has risen to the extreme… Usually, such a condition is caused by low or contaminated transmission fluid. But guess what? A defective torque converter can also cause your Mercedes’ transmission temperature to skyrocket; even during normal driving conditions.
#4- Wired noise
If you are hearing disturbing noises coming from your vehicle's transmission system; especially when accelerating, this signifies a problem with the torque converter. It could also signify something more serious. You must trace this noise to its root before things get worse.
To Sum Things Up;
The torque converter is the nucleus of a vehicle’s automatic transmission system. It is the torque converter that converts power from the prime mover or engine into hydraulic pressure and makes it possible for the transmission to automatically shift between gears. Defects in a part of such importance can cause the transmission system to act up. It is therefore important that you check on your Mercedes’ torque converter from time to time. And if there is any defect in it, then take measures accordingly.

Does Your BMW Jump Out of First Gear? Here are 5 Possible Reasons
Tumblr media
Transmission problems can be very annoying. Especially while shifting gears, it causes problems. It can be hard to shift gears or slipping of gears. Transmission is one of the very important part of a vehicle. If the transmission is damaged, then power from the engine would not be supplied to the wheels in required amount. So in this article I’m gonna discuss about some common reasons behind transmission jumping out of first gear in BMW.
What causes BMW to jump out of first gear?
Low gear oil
Gear oil helps the every parts of the transmission or the gear box to work properly. Lack of gear oil will affect the every process in the gear box including the shifter locking in one gear. If there is a very low oil in the transmission or the gear box, then the transmission would not get into first gear properly.
Bad or old gear oil
If the gear oil has become old enough that it can’t lubricate the gear box more, then it would also cause shifting problems of gears. Your shifter would not get fully into the first gear if the gear oil has become oil or having various contaminants.
Damaged gear box mount
The transmission mounts keep the system hold on a particular place properly aligned. If the transmission mount is broken, then it would not remain properly aligned. Due to misalignment the problem is caused while shifting gears, the shifter would not be able to engage a gear fully.
Faulty synchronizer in transmission
A synchronizer synchronizes the different parts in transmission, without these components, the transmission would not work. Your transmission will stay in a gear at all.
Wearing of bearing
Bearing helps the shafts to move freely and smoothly is the bearings are excessively worn, then the shafts move roughly with a load instead of moving easily. This leads the gear to come out of the mesh.
Improperly installed rubber boot
The rubber boot is situated on the shift lever shaft. If it is not isolated properly, then it would lead to you automatically jump to neutral. When you shift it to the first gear, then the rubber boot which is not properly installed would put some tension on the shift lever shaft and make it jump out of the first gear.
What to do to diagnose such shifting problems?
1.  If your BMW is repeatedly shifting out of gears, then you can try restarting the engine. Restarting can reset some errors in the control module of the car.
2.  You can reset the adapter settings in the car. For that you have to start the engine. Then push the throttle pedal slowly to the floor while the kick down lever is engaged. Keep the pedal pressed for 30 seconds, then turn off the engine. The ignition should be in on position. Then the pedal is released and engine is made to start. The gear box settings will be reset and the factory default settings would come to your gear box.
3.  Check if the transmission fluid level is correct or not. For that you have to run your car for ten minutes to heat up the fluid. Check the fluid after raising the ridge of the car. Check if the fluid or the oil is filled to the correct levels. Check for any leaks of the gear oil. The gear oil is filled to the gear box if there is lack of oil.
4.   Have a detailed inspection of the transmission, check the mounts, rubber boot, bearings, etc.
Conclusion
Get your car repaired by experienced trusted car technicians. There are both simple and complex fixes. Some fixes may be very much cheaper like changing the gear oil or changing the gear box mounts, while some fixes can be very costly like repair of gear synchronizers. For diagnosis you may need to replace or rebuilt the entire gear box.

There are many systems in your car. They work to make the car perform. Malfunctioning of this system will lead to poor performance of the car and we will not able to get the advantage of all those features of the car which it has. So maintenance is required for such systems. You will not get a good output from the car if there is an issue due to poor maintenance of systems. Here I’m gonna tell you about transmission system in your car. You will get to know how important is your transmission in your car and why proper care is needed.
Transmission of your car
Transmission system is a vital part of a car; it carries out a very important task of delivering power to the wheels of your car from the engine. Popularly it is also known as gear box. The transmission allows you to shift gears in your car in order to get required power at your wheels in the situation. Transmission is available of two types - manual transmission and auto transmission. If an issue arises in the transmission then it is a big issue and immediate action is required against such issue. There are many issues related to transmission like, transmission overheating, wear and tear of transmission components, etc. Replacements in transmission are generally expensive. There are two important components that need regular maintenance, that is transmission fluid and filter. Whenever you take your car for transmission service, always first check the transmission fluid level and the color of the fluid in the transmission and then check the filter.
Why maintenance of transmission is important?
Transmission performs an important task of providing power to the wheels from the engine. To make the car run effectively and efficiently, power from the engine should be properly used, and for that, the transmission of your car should be in good condition. To make your transmission remain in good condition or to increase its lifetime, regular maintenance is required. Lack of maintenance can decrease the lifespan of transmission, frequently problems in transmission may arise and you will have to take to mechanic like that and spend lots of money. To save money and time, maintenance is required.
Prevention is always better than cure. First priority should be given to prevention, to prevent such issues, maintenance is required. You need to maintain the peak working condition of the transmission for long time. Maintenance refers to proper care that makes the transmission last long. In transmission maintenance and service, first fluid is to be checked. Refill the fluid if you find it in low level in transmission. One thing you should keep in mind, you shouldn’t use that type of fluid which is not recommended by the manufacturer. Take the help of your owner manual of car for details of the required type of fluid. Such fluids are wrong for your car transmission; it can cause serious issue to your transmission. If you find any acute signs of beginning of a transmission issue like leakage, then without delaying you have to take your car for a transmission service. In a basic transmission service, the fluid will be drained out, then the pan is cleaned, then new seals and filters are installed to avoid the leakage or any loss of fluid.
Prevention of different transmission problems
Prevent wear and tear of transmission components
Wear and tear generally happens if there is lack of transmission fluid. Transmission fluid helps the transmission in proper functioning and increases the overall life of transmission. Leakage can be a reason for shortage of transmission fluid. If the transmission fluid is leaking, then you will find the leaking fluid under your car. Always change your filter if you change your fluid.
Prevent the overheating of transmission
The culprit causing overheat can be again lack of transmission fluid. Correct level of transmission fluid in transmission prevents the overheating completely and helps in proper running of transmission. So to prevent overheating, you have to check your transmission fluid level. If you find that the fluid is contaminated, then flush it out and refill it. You can know if your transmission fluid is contaminated or not. If it is contaminated, then it will be opaque and of dark colour. You have to take out the contaminated fluid. If the fluid gets contaminated by mixing with coolant, then it will be of light pink colour, you have to change the fluid. A good quality transmission fluid should be transparent, red colour. Always use that type of transmission fluid, which is recommended by the manufacturer of your car.
Conclusion
If you get any signs of any transmission issue and you are confused, then contact your dealer and explain him or her on the symptoms, you will surely get some advice and know about the issue. Get some suggestions on transmission maintenance and some tips to make your work easier.

Tumblr media
No doubt, BMW is one of the most popular car brands in the market. But, have you ever wondered what makes it different from other car manufacturers? Well, vehicles manufactured by this brand are reliable, comfortable, and safe.
Even with such a great brand value, some of its models are prone to transmission problems. These problems can lead to complete transmission failure if not addressed on time. The good news is: transmission-related problems usually come with clear warning signs. In this article, we will converse about some of them. But first, let’s find out what does a transmission do in a car.
Why Do Cars Need Transmissions?
As most of you probably know, the sole purpose of a transmission is to adjust the engine output speed in relation to the wheel speed. By doing so, it increases the torque applied to the wheels. In layman's terms, it makes the engine a viable source of power by controlling its power output.
If for any reason, your BMW's transmission malfunctions, you will face a variety of performance-related issues. Below is a list of signs that your transmission is going out. Please take this into consideration.
Symptoms of Transmission Problems in A BMW
Burning odor
Does your car smell like something is burning? Because, if such is the case, there is a good chance that your car transmission is running hot for some reason; most probably due to low fluid. We all know how important fluid is for the overall functioning of a car transmission.
If for some reason, fluid inside your car transmission dries up, it will overheat. Your BMW's transmission may also overheat due to fluid oxidation and contamination. Whatever the reason may be, if your car smells like something is burning, have someone check on its transmission.
Weird noises
If your BMW is running rough and frequently making wired noises, the chances are that the transmission is not working as it should. There are countless reasons why transmission can make strange noises; ranging from a low fluid level to faulty components.
And, guess what… if you don’t do anything about the noise, you could get yourself into trouble. What kind of trouble, you asked? Well, if you continue driving with such strange noises, your car can often fall out of gear, perform poorly, and even have a shivering sensation.
Fluid leak when parked
Another sign of a transmission problem in a car is a fluid leak. Most of you probably know the importance of fluid in the overall functioning of transmission. For those who don't know, transmission needs fluid for; lubrication, optimal operating temperature, and smooth performance.

Do This If Your Mercedes Keeps Jumping Out of First Gear
Tumblr media
Imagine if you want to shift to any gear, but your transmission automatically shifts to another gear. You try to shift again to that gear but repeatedly your car gets shift out of that gear. This would be pretty irritating, isn't it? It can get you into trouble if there is a high need of that particular gear at that time. Transmission problems are to be diagnosed. Here I’m gonna discuss about how to diagnose the problem and what causes this problem at the gear box.
What causes the Mercedes to jump out of first gear?
Here are some common reasons behind the jumping out of first gear
1.   Detent springs are worn
2.   Damaged shifter fork
3.   Wearing of the synchronizer in the gear box
4.   Lack of transmission oil
5.   Broken gear teeth
What to do if the Mercedes jumps out of the first gear?
Here are some steps to do if your Mercedes has such problem. For that you just need some wrenches, screw drivers, some lubricants like oil, FD40, etc. Use gloves for better safety of your hands.
1.   The gearbox cover is removed and then the inter lock plate is removed.
2.    Check the first and the second gear selector from the rear of the gear box.
3.    Check if there is any movement of the brass forks when made to slide back and forth. Faults in the detent ball and the spring can lead to movement.
4.    After removing the top cover, by the interlock arm and pivot, the change speed gate is removed.
5.    Remove the three nuts and washers located above the propeller shaft and at the ends of three rods. Also remove the locking plates that is linked with the first/second shaft and the third/fourth shaft. It should be carefully removed so that the threads would not be damaged.
6.   The selector rod is to be removed from the housing. Apply FD40 if the rod is tight
7.    After the removal of the rod, the spring and the ball in the hole are to remove by a magnet. If the spring is stuck then you may have to completely remove the speed fork after the removal other selector forks and rods. Check the other springs and balls in the gear box.
8.    Put new ball and spring into their hole and push the rod back into the selector fork holding. A little oil is applied to the selector rod before reinstalling it to the fork. With the help of a screw driver, the rod is pushed over it. A clunk will be heard when the ball comes to the grove of speed fork rod.
9.    If the clink sound is not heard, then the size on the spring or the ball must be not correct for your gear box.
10.  The locking plate is reinstalled. Then the washers and nuts are tightened well by wrench. The change speed gate is reinstalled and also the pivot and the interlock arm. The rods are screwed in and out to adjust the position of the forks.
11.  Put the top cover back to the gear box and then, the gear box is replaced back into the car. Put gear oil if required.
Preventing the transmission problems
Most of the transmission problems can be prevented if a proper care and maintenance is done of the gear box. Mostly, the gear box needs a regular oil change. If the oil is not changed regularly, then dirt may accumulate over gears and damage them. Transmission components are pretty durable, but they still need care.
Conclusion
After diagnosing the transmission problem, you can drive your car with a required amount of power in your car. Get your car diagnosed in garages if you get difficulty in repairing, better get your car diagnosed in authorized Mercedes service centers.
