hello! im a 4th year CMS student at UBC and I'm starting to freak out about what I want to do after I graduate. Like most kids, med/dental/law school was the dream but my grades just aren't up for it. Do you have any ideas/stories from your peers that were in the same boat and what they did? (I am interested in everything and anything!)
This is pretty common with students who study the Sciences (especially Life Sciences), my friends and I are no different.
I chose the Computer Science and technology route as I had always had an interest in technology (originally wanted to minor or double major in CS, but that plan didn’t manifest). The BCS (second degree computer science program) has a lot of BIOL grads as Bioinformatics is a growing field. I have coworkers who went to SFU and BCIT for a second degree/diploma in CS.
I have several friends who went the business route, with a lot of them enrolling in the DAP (accounting) program at UBC. It is also a post-grad program, most of them are now working at accounting firms and working towards their CPA.
Other friends are at BCIT doing various programs; Sonography, GIS, Nursing (there are a lot of programs, you should definitely take a look at BCIT if you’re interested in further studies).
Still others are doing grad school, doing their Masters and PhDs in various scientific fields.
There are a lot of options out there if professional schools don’t work out, we’re specially luck here in BC to have a lot of different schools, if that’s what you want to do.
You can always find jobs, UBC CareersOnline is really good for finding jobs aimed at UBC grads!

Hey, I'm not sure if you would know this, but do you know if the theatres on campus use the student employment website to list openings for technicians and such?
I think the majority of student jobs will be posted on UBC CareersOnline, I used to go through pages of those postings and I’m pretty sure I saw some jobs for UBC Theatre, stuff like lighting tech and ticket booth assistants. You can probably contact them directly to ask as well, they might redirect you to CareersOnline or they might give you the application themselves.
