Ray Manzarek - "The Lovers" From the album Carmina Burana (1983)
Last song scrobbled from iTunes at Last.fm
THE COURT OF LOVE Blanziflor et Helena
In 1803 a scroll of medieval poems was discovered in the German province of Bavaria among the debris of the secularized monastery of Benedikt-Beuren ("BURANA").
These lyrics, written primarily in Latin, were determined to be the work of renegade monks and wandeing poets of the 13th century. Their words captured the lost world of rebels and dropouts of the medieval clergy, hard lovers, drinkers, on the move, celebrating existence, rather than living the meditative celibate, cloistered life of the monastery.
In 1935 German composer Carl Orff re-discovered the poems. Impressed with their meaning and rhythm he composed a cantata utilizing the centuries-old verses. He transformed the writings into invocations and profane chants accompanied by numnerous instruments and magical representations.
These songs ("CARMINA") were divided into three primary sections. Springtime -- the life force renewed; In the Tavern -- drinking and gambling; The Court of Love -- passion, sensuality. The sections are pervaded and framed by the Wheel of Fortune ("O Fortuna") perpetually turning, perpetually governing the course of man's existence.
In 1983 Ray Manzarek, long attracted to the spiritual power of Carmina Burana, chose to interpret the piece in a contemporary framework. This presentation intends to create enchanted pictures; to conjure up the ecstasy expressed by the lyrics, an enhanced intense feeling for life akin to the passions and revelry of the wandering poets of so long ago.

16th and 59th most listened to songs of the year?
In the Tavern: Boiling Rage by Ray Manzarek
this is from ray manzarek (doors keyboardist)'s remix of Carl Orff's cantata Carmina Burana. The whole thing as a piece is objectively hilarious and also catchy as hell. 80s synthy instrumentals preserve and riff on the melodies orff composed in the (19)30s for a book of raunchy latin/german poems composed in the (12)30s. it's great
Spider by They Might Be Giants
just a between song piece. silly and weird. it's between two songs that i liked on a character playlist i made and it's so short that i just let it play thru every time i listened to one of the two songs.

Raymond Daniel Manczarek Jr.
February 12, 1939 – May 20, 2013
Remembering Ray Manzarek on the 6th anniversary of his passing. Ray has often been described as the "glue" that held The Doors together as a band. His keyboard work is unmistakable and helped to give The Doors a sound like no other rock band of their day. Truly a brilliant musician, he could expertly play a mesmerizing organ with one hand while handling a steady hypnotic keyboard bass line with the other...and could sing at the same time with virtually no errors.
A brief biography of a life well lived:
Born in Chicago, Illinois to a family of Polish descent, Ray Manczarek took piano lessons at a young age but preferred to play basketball. When his coach refused to let him play his preferred position, he decided to quit sports and focus on music as his primary passion. He then went on to college and received a degree in economics before enlisting in the U.S. Army. Upon his discharge (private first class), he enrolled in UCLA's graduate film program. It was at this time that he met the love of his life, future wife Dorothy Fujikawa. He also befriended a quiet undergraduate film student named Jim Morrison, who he found he had much in common with.
In 1965, Ray Manzarek (he later dropped the 'c' from his last name) was currently in a band with his two brothers (Rick and Jim Manczarek) called Rick and the Ravens. Ray invited Jim Morrison to join the band on stage and history was forever changed. Jim Morrison soon joined the band officially as their lead vocalist, despite his shy nature and aversion to singing in front of a live audience. Soon after, they cut demos at World Pacific Studios, with John Densmore on drums. The tracks would evolve and eventually be released as Doors songs. Ray's brothers left the band after becoming disillusioned by the poor respose they had received to the demos. John Densmore then invited his friend, Robby Krieger, to play guitar for the band. Thus, The Doors were born.
The band became the 'house band' at a small club called The London Fog, but were fired due to poor audience attendance. The same day, they were invited to be the 'house band' at a top local music venue in Los Angeles, the Whisky A Go Go. They were disappointed as they were signed to Columbia Records only to soon find themselves on the "drop list". Thankfully, Jac Holzman from Elektra Records had come to see their shows at the Whisky and grew to appreciate their unique style, although he had initially been unimpressed. On the same night the band was fired from the Whisky A Go Go, Jac Holzman decided to sign them to a record contract at Elektra. Fate was in their favor.
The Doors became one of the most popular and influential bands in rock music history. Between 1967 and 1971, they gained fame and changed music history with their unique blend of rock, poetry, blues, jazz and psychedelia. The band did not feature a permanent bass player, so while studio albums frequently had studio musicians fill in the bass lines, Ray took up playing a Fender Rhodes piano bass with one hand at live shows. His other hand was busy playing organ on the Vox Continental (eventually he switched to a Gibson G-101). Additionally, he sang backing vocals and lead vocal on occasion in concert.
After the death of Jim Morrison (July 3, 1971), the band made two additional studio albums featuring Ray and Robby on lead vocals and had live appearances as a three man band. However, they soon realized that The Doors were four equal and irreplaceable parts; the magic was no longer present with the absence of a founding member. Ray, John and Robby decided to part ways.
After The Doors disbanded, Ray Manzarek embarked on a solo career. He released two solo albums on his own before joining band Nite City. The 80's brought his adaptation of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana. Later, he worked with Iggy Pop, Echo and the Bunnymen, Weird Al and others, while also producing and occasionally performing with the punk band X.
During the 80's and beyond, Ray showed his talent in filmmaking by producing or contributing to several music videos and films. The late 90's and 2000's also showed Ray's abilities as an author. He released his autobiography ("Light My Fire: My Life with The Doors") to positive reviews, and additionally authored "The Poet in Exile" and "Snake Moon".
In addition to being one of the greatest musicians in modern music, Ray was also a loyal family man. He married wife Dorothy on December 21, 1967 (with Jim Morrison and Pamela Courson as witnesses). They remained married until Ray's death. Son Pablo was born in 1973 and Ray and Dorothy were blessed with several grandchildren.
Ray had his life stolen by bile duct cancer at the age of 74, on May 20, 2013. His wife and family members were by his side. His body was cremated. He is eternally missed.

Bakelit-sztorik 13 - "Amikor vége a zenének..."
Igen fiatalon kialakult benne a zene iránti szeretet, s ennek jegyében ismerkedett a zongora rejtelmeivel. Zongoraleckéi során komoly muzikális műveltségre tett szert, s a klasszikusok iránti szeretete mellett idővel a jazz és a blues imádata is beköszöntött életébe.
(Ray és Jim Morrison 1968-as európai turnéjuk során)
A bandába, mely csakhamar kinőtte magát s rövid időn belül Los Angeles zenei életének legvonzóbb zenekarává lett. Koncertjeik tömegeket vonzottak a Whisky a Go-Go nevű szórakozóhelyre.
(A legendás Whisky a Go Go Los Angelesben,… a Doors korai fellépéseinek helyszíne)
(A The Doors karrierje elején, valamikor 1966-ban, Jim épp a mikrofonba üvölt… )
Olyan remekbeszabott s mára legendássá vált alkotások kaptak helyet a korongon, mint a Break on through, a Soul Kitchen, az Alabama Song, a The End, s mind közül talán a legnagyobb sláger, a Lobbants lángra, azaz a Light my fire.
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOpQjD-rX0g
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QxizIrbcSuU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=deB_u-to-IE
Ezen dalok elképzelhetetlenek lennének Ray orgonaszólói nélkül. A Light my fire esetében az ő fejéből pattant ki a dal bevezetője, ő rakta a jazzes és latinos akkordokat a számok alá, s a Doors-koncertek magával ragadó, szertartásos hangulata is éppen az ő orgonájának volt köszönhető. A fiatalság egyik nagyhatású ikonjává lett, akit Eric Clapton és Ravi Shankar mögött a legnagyobb élő zenészek táborába emelt a kritika.
(Az együttes, 1968-as európai turnéja idején)
Egészen újat hoztak vagy már ismert s izgalmasat csempésztek vissza a zenébe: Ray csemballó-hangzást épített be a dalokba, ami egészen speciális, sejtelmes hangulatot idézett elő, s visszafelé játszott orgonaszólókkal bolondította meg a számokat. Minden új lemezük valami újat, mást, szokatlant és a korábbitól eltérőt hozott. A Strange days, a Waiting for the sun, a The soft parade a kísérletezések jegyében születtek meg, számos feledhetetlen slágert eredményezve.
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iv8GW1GaoIc
Nem sokkal a lemez megjelente után énekesük váratlanul, s máig tisztázatlan körülmények közt elhunyt.
(Az 1971-es, legendás L.A.Woman album borítója)
A banda szekere azonban a tragádia után is tovább haladt, a zenekar trióként folytatta, s minden eddigitől eltérő, jazz-rock hangzást hoztak létre. 2 lemezt készítettek még, s eme albumok dalaiban komoly és élvezetes ízelítőt kapunk parádés hangszeres tudásukról s muzikalitásukról. Ray zeneszerzőként, s énekesként is szerepel e dalokban.
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AaL3A2BVmJM
1973-ban aztán feloszlott a banda, s mindenki útkeresésbe fogott. Ray elkészíthette két, korszakos művét. Elsőként a The Golden Scarab című albumot, mely szólópályája legsikerültebb remekműve, olyan dalokkal mint a címadó nóta, a Solar boat vagy éppen a The purpose of existence, melyekben hangját, hangszeres tudását s dalszerzői tehetségét egyformán élvezhetjük. Varázslatos albumról van szó, amolyan zenés mítoszról.
(Ray szólólemeze, a The Golden Scarab)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pckt-R5Esxk
Ezt követte 1974-ben második, a The whole thing started with the rock n roll című korongja, mely hangzásában nyersebb ugyan, de így is számos slágert és gyönyörű próbálkozást tartalmaz. Megunhatatlan dalai: The Gambler, Whirling dervish, Bicentennial blues.
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87ZsV5Oa4C4
Rövid szólópályáját követően Manzarek a The Nite City nevű rockegyüttes billentyűse és alkalmi dalszerzője lett. A banda 2 albumot jelentetett meg, majd feloszlottak.
Ezután, 1983-ban elkészítette a Carl Orff szerezte Carmina Burana modernebb, rockosabb változatát, mely komoly és izgalmas próbálkozásnak számított.
  (A “modernizált” Carmina Burana borítója)
A következő években s évtizedekben interjúk s tévés szereplések tucatjait abszolválta, lenyűgöző beszélőkéjével ámulatba ejtve a közönséget s éltetve barátja, Jim Morrison s egykori bandája legendáját. 2000-ben megrendezte első egész estés filmjét, mely a Love her madly címet kapta, s mely egy szerelem s gyilkosság sajátos történetét meséli el.
A film megbukott ugyan, de a rajongók körében értékes relikviának számít. 2006-ban aztán új, a filmmel azonos című szólóalbumot készített, mely személyes kedvencemmé vált. Sötét jazz modern zenei elemekkel elegyítve. Dalai min a Too close to the sun, az I could be anything, a Jai vu ta vie vagy a Hadleys cruise az acid jazz műfajának igazi remekművei.
Manzarek számos más zenei projektben is részt vett élete során, költőkkel, köztük Michael Mcclure-ral is készített lemezt, akárcsak kiváló blueskorongokat Roy Rogers-szel. Ime, egy kis ízelítő ezen művekből.
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-FEYE7mHUE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-O3tDbSdM8
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajzTegvq2RQ

These songs (“CARMINA”) were divided into three primary sections. Springtime – the life force renewed; In the Tavern – drinking and gambling; The Court of Love – passion, sensuality. The sections are pervaded and framed by the Wheel of Fortune (“O Fortuna”) perpetually turning, perpetually governing the course of man’s existence.
