Wir fahren also am frühen Nachmittag los, halten unterwegs in einem Outlet Center und gehen bei Mel’s Drive-In etwas essen bevor wir uns in der Dunkelheit durch Los Angeles quälen. Die Stadt ist mit ihren knapp 4 Millionen Einwohnern ein gewaltiger Moloch und es dauert Ewigkeiten, um von einem Ende zum anderen zu kommen. Wir schaffen es aber sogar bis nach Carlbad. Kurz vor Mitternacht steuern wir einen Wal-Mart Parkplatz an. Bisher war es nach unseren Erfahrungen immer geduldet, sich dort für eine Nacht hinzustellen. Wir haben uns geirrt. Nach kurzer Zeit klopft Security an unsere Tür und teilt uns mit, dass wir den Parkplatz verlassen müssten. Wir könnten uns aber bei Target, einer anderen Supermarktkette, nur drei Blocks weiter hinstellen. Als wir auf den Parkplatz fahren sehen wir in der Dunkelheit ein anderes Wohnmobil, was von uns zunächst als etwas Gutes wahrgenommen wird. Die Nacht zeigt dann aber, dass es sich um das mobile Büro eines Drogendealers handelt und immer wieder kommen Autos, manchmal mit quietschenden Reifen, angebraust und kaufen ein. Auf der anderen Seite neben uns macht noch ein Wohnmobil Station. Rücksichtnahme ist den Bewohnern ein Fremdwort, aber am nächsten Morgen wundern wir uns über gar nichts mehr als wir das zusammengeklebte Schrottteil im Tageslicht sehen. Zum Glück haben wir alles gut überstanden.
