Tips to stay clear of car scams.

Avoid getting scammed buying a car in the UK.
Most of us probably think we are way too smart to ever get scammed on the internet. Well that maybe so but here are a few tips I learnt the hard way on how to avoid getting ripped off buying a second hand car. The thing here is not to become fixated with the incredible bargain you have found. There are people out there constantly running more and more elaborate scams and schemes to get your money and vanish with it. Don’t let them. Ask questions and run a few simple checks as outlined below.
Here’s the scenario. You see a car that you’d really like to buy on Gumtree. The price, the spec, the beautiful pictures - everything seems amazing, especially the price. You contact the buyer and yes it’s still for sale. Just remember if the deal seems too good to be true then it probably is. It costs nothing to walk away.
Gumtree
If at any point the ad disappears from Gumtree and instead you get something like “Oooops that page doesn’t exist”, exercise extreme caution. Contact Gumtree and ask why the ad has been taken down. You might be tempted to think the vendor has taken the ad down because you’ve expressed an interest in their car. Highly unlikely. Course if you ask a dodgy vendor that question it’s exactly what they are going to tell you.
Vendor says I’m using a company to sell and deliver the car to you
The vendor will come up with some excuse for using a third party, specialist car delivery company, usually because they are not in the country right now... But in fact it’s all really great as this company will not only complete the transaction with you securely, but will also carry out things like HPI checks and inspections, deliver the car at no expense to you and of course you can always return the car to them within 10 days for a full refund. And here’s the most psychological part of their ‘sell’ to you - they, the vendor, will only get your money once you are happy with the car.
It’s all too good to be true...isn’t it?
Now the vendor tells you all about the car having 2 keys, a full service history, its immaculate condition - heck they’ll even email you over a copy of the V5 registration document just for your peace of mind. And they do. And it looks kosher...but it’s simple to forge one as a digital scan to email to you. They even offer to phone you and talk you through the process.  In fact all in all, the whole thing seems really easy and straight forward and having been led towards the car delivery company’s website you’ll do something innocuous like register your interest in the car, confirm the price you have agreed with the vendor and say when you would like the car delivered. Once done you’ll receive a convincing looking invoice / money request and their bank details. At this point you are just a few steps away from a gleaming car bargain, but more probably you’re about to make a sizeable non-refundable cash gift to a stranger, a scam artist...a criminal.
For some psychological reason, the fact that the car delivery company never answers the phone, has a fax number listed on the site  (who uses a fax anymore?) which uses the same number as the main phone line, along with some strange use of English, a few dodgy customer service rosettes...for some reason these things don’t ring the alarm bells loud enough in your head, they just chime a little note of concern. But after a pleasant chat on their nifty little web chat thing you feel much better, because you asked some pertinent questions to the very friendly Samantha along the lines of ‘is this ok - it is legit isn’t it - will I be able to get my money back?’
Don’t even get to this point. Do yourself a massive favour and run some independent checks.
1. Run your own HPI check on the vehicle - just do it. Look up the registration. Bear in mind that if this is a scam then the car will probably be sitting on a dealer forecourt somewhere. You’re not necessarily just looking for stolen on the HPI check but for any outstanding finance. Anything to find out where this car is and who really owns it.
2. Look up the domain of the car delivery company on something like whois.com and see when it was registered.  If it was registered just a few days ago and in a foreign country, you have some serious questions to ask. Save yourself a whole load of stress.
3. If they have a postal address on the car delivery website look it up on Google & Google Maps - take a look on Street view. Does it exist? If you can find a company there ring them up and ask them about the address being used by other companies.
4. If you google the car delivery company and find some positive reviews on a forum - make sure they are talking about the same company with the exact same domain name that you have been led to. Join the forum and ask questions, post the domain name.
And when the car doesn’t turn up after 4 days and you begin to have doubts...
Course, you could choose not to check and just sit around convincing yourself and friends that you have the bargain of a lifetime whilst you wait the 3-4 days it takes for delivery. Why does it take 3-4 days? That will be the 3-4 days for your money to clear into their bank account. And when the car doesn’t turn up after 4 days and you begin to have doubts, then cold sweats and panic attacks - you’ll finally check the HPI and discover a finance company has an interest in the car and the domain name was actually only registered last week... in Panama. That’s when you’ll desperately call your bank to try and stop the transaction. But it will all be too late.
When this happened to me the physical address the scammers used was 1 Seafield Rd, Inverness, Highland  IV1 1SG. It wasn’t until I realised that I had been scammed that I checked it out and it tuned out to be the office of Stagecoach. I did speak to them and they were helpful and aware that the address had been used for scams before. I also checked the HPI and spoke to a finance company who said “they had an interest in the car” and whilst at it I checked the domain of the car delivery company on whois - and it was registered just a week or so before...in Panama.
The domain that was used to scam me was www.ilisters-corp.com
What to do if you have been scammed...
If you think you have been scammed get onto your bank without a moment’s hesitation. Then report the incident to the police’s Action Fraud. You can do it online or phone. 0300 123 2040  actionfraud.police.uk
If you are lucky the bank might be able to recover your money, if not here’s what Which? have to say about trying to clam it back.

Scammer targets elderly Omaha woman with promise of prizes OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – An 89-year-old woman has lost money in a prize scam and the conmen kept calling back for more. By overhearing her mother’s phone call Leslie isn’t disrespectful but lucky. “I heard the part about prepaid cards, and I said uh no,” said Leslie. Leslie took the phone from her mom. “I consulted our sheriff bout you and they said you were a scammer, then I hung up. My mom makes about 700 bucks a month in social security and they already took her for half of that.” Her 89-year-old mother who doesn’t feel safe being identified already gave the caller the pin number to drain a 300-dollar prepaid card. The scammer promised the victim a Mercedes Benz and an F-150 in exchange for two $500 cards, or as he called them, ‘fees.’ New vehicles the 89-year-old supposedly won. 6 News called the scammer and said, “I’m standing in her driveway, I don’t see a new car, where is it?” The scammer replied, “Get out of her driveway get out her home. When you leave her home, we will deliver her car we don’t want to see you.” Her prizes were never delivered, and the 89-year-old lost $300. Calls from someone claiming to be with Publishers Clearing House or Prize Patrol may be a scam. Red flags include a demand for fee payments through cash cards and they’ll pressure you to get that money quickly. Often the phone scammers have accents and different ones will call a victim to give the appearance of a large organization offering expensive prizes. Copyright 2021 WOWT. All rights reserved.
