Disney Legends Pete Docter And Craig McCracken Awarded With Winsor McCay Award Achievement At 50th Edition Of Annie Awards.

ASIFA-Hollywood has just released nominations for its 50th Annual Annie Awards recognizing the year’s best in the field of animation.

This year, the ceremony is scheduled to be held live, in-person on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at UCLA’s Royce Hall.

Juried Awards will be presented during the ceremony, honoring unparalleled achievement and exceptional contributions to animation. The Winsor McCay Award in recognition of lifetime or career contributions are being presented to three recipients:

Pete Docter - Chief Creative Officer of Pixar Animation Studios

Docter is American animator, film director, screenwriter, producer, voice actor mostly know for Directing the Academy Award & Annie Award winning films Monsters Inc,Up,Inside Out & Soul and being the Chief Creative Officer of Pixar Animation Studios since 2018, Docter has lead the future Director of Storytelling at Pixar and bringing diversity with more POC,Queer and Female voices to direct their own shorts and films at the studio with upcoming talent like Aphton Corbin, Brian Fee, Kristen Lester, and Rosana Sullivan who have been working on their respective untitled feature films

Additionaly Docter has provided creative consultant on Monsters At Work from Disney Television Animation and got a special thanks credit on Walt Disney Animation Studios Frozen II and was going to helm the production of the canceled Pixar film Newt to step down to make Inside Out.

Craig McCracken - Creator And Animator Disney Television Animation 2011-2018

Craig McCracken is an American animator, writer, producer, director, storyboard artist, and designer known for creating The Powerpuff Girls,Foster’s Home For Imaginary Friends at Cartoon Network Studios,Wander Over Yonder for Disney Television Animation and Kid Cosmic for Netflix Animation, McCracken has been credited as "a staple of American modern animated television" on 2021.

Besides working on his most notable works McCracken has pivoted character desings,art direction and storyboarding for other projects at CN like Two Stupid Dogs, Dexter’s Laboratory, Dumb And Dumber,Chowder additionaly he helped on CN Development with the pilots of Diggs Tailwagger: Galactic Rover and Enter Mode 5 and was Executive Producer for the pilot of Regular Show from J.G Quintel.

Currently McCracken is in development for a Powerpuff Girls Reboot for Cartoon Network and WarnerMax and a preschool reboot of Foster’s Home For Imaginary Friends for Cartoonito and WarnerMax with Hanna Barbera Studios Europe.

Despite leaving Disney on 2018, McCracken on late 2022 revealed on Twitter that he didn’t felt burn with Disney and would like to make more original shows for them, given the chance with the new Disney Channel’s Worldwide CEO Ayo Davis

There was a consequential announcement yesterday that fundamentally alters the structure of Cartoon Network Studios going forward and will have a far-reaching impact on the projects that it produces. The company calls it part of its “strategic realignment.”

In a company-wide memo, chairman Channing Dungey told staff that the company plans to fully consolidate its tv animation divisions, merging Warner Bros. Animation (WBA) and Cartoon Network Studios (CNS). Going forward, Sam Register will continue as head of WBA and CNS, as well as Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe, the latter of which will continue to operate independently from the other two.

According to the memo, all three labels will continue to exist, but perhaps more in name than in action. Both development and production at WBA and CNS will now be merged, extending on the cross-studio teams that were already in place for programming, casting, legal, and business affairs, and artist relations. This means that Cartoon Network Studios no longer has any independent say on either creative or operational matters, something that has never happened before in its existence.

ANIMATION MAGAZINE interviewed Disney Legends Nic Smal and Lucy Heavens where they unveiled details on KIFF

-The series initial concept came on December 2017

-Matt Groening, Genndy Tartakovsky and Stephen Hillenburg are Smal and Heavens animation heroes

-Clone High, SpongeBob, Monty Python,Futurama and specially The Simpsons where huge influences on Kiff and their second original Disney TVA show in development.

-The animation comes from Yearim (Gravity Falls) at Korea, then scanned into Toon Boom Harmony at Titmouse NYC.

-The show is produced by Titmouse in association with Disney TVA, the main production of the show takes place at NYC at Titmouse NYC .

-In terms of visual style, they wanted to reference Cape Town at South Africa with it’s flora and fauna.

-The series was pitched to different networks across their Europe and American Studios (Cartoon Network with Cartoon Network Studios/ Hanna Barbera Studios Europe,Nickelodeon with Nickelodeon Animation Studios,Dreamworks Animation Television,Netflix with Netflix Animation/Netflix Animation Europe)

-Kiff was optioned by Disney after it's initial pitch 5 months later on 2018

-They wanted to create a show that they have a blast making and that they love to watch, and Kiff delivers on both of those!

-The series explores every musical genre imaginable, and in a way that doesn’t speak down to kids, they see the songs as different parts of the human psyche; the lust for life, the sensitive and vulnerable parts of ourselves, the self-centered and more

How many even know Elliott from Earth was premiering already? Yeah, it went by so fast...

Hope to those who can handle it are able to actually watch the premiere. I won't on account of two reasons:

I haven't been up-to-date since the first episode.

For SOME REASON, Elliott from Earth is only showing on Cartoon Network. I looked through my TV guide, and apparently the premiere is ONLY on Cartoon Network. Does anyone not like the old logo of Cartoon Network Studios Europe called "Cartoon Network Development Studio Europe" anymore? Like The Amazing World of Gumball, that old logo isn't rebranded into the new current logo.

Guys, believe me when I say this that the show is a GODSEND. With shows like Adventure Time and Bravest Warriors already over... Elliott from Earth is the cartoon that you definitely need in your life!

I want this show to stay on Cartoon Network for both years and seasons to come, but I hope that this message will encourage all that follow me here on Tumblr or perhaps Twitter to go watch it if not already.

Give Elliott and Mo the attention the show deserves.

I don't want to demand you guys do so, but I just see that the people who worked on this show did a really great job on it. I really hope they get more than perfect results.

But please, for the love of anime and cartoons, this show is so good and fans are worried that it’ll get thrown away if it doesn’t get much viewing audience!

now before you whip out your keyboards and get ready to furiously type "GUMBALL RIPOFF",,,,please listen to what i said earlier,,,,same studio,,,,and the animators from the show made this,,,,this isn't bocquelet's baby but it's got the same animators

and like...this show was slept on the HARDEST of any other CN show and was INSANELY underappreciated. this beats sheep in the big city levels of overlooked. this is a whole new league.

like...y'all flat out forgot it existed. big time. like yeah y'all might've watched that one video vailskibum made about it but then y'all walked right off. this show has a smaller fandom than lyon mississippi and that is a whole other level of small. in fact, there's pretty much no fandom, yeah, literally no fandom. at all.

the only way i could watch it was through uploads on dailymotion (and very recently this dude on youtube has every episode uploaded atm but i can't see that lasting before 2020). no legal way i could watch the show because it also didn't come to the USA and i am so pissed about that :(

the most further west the show went was brazil and latin america in july 2018 but no new countries since...did they think americans couldn't handle how authentically scandinavian it was??? did they think we were too stupid to differentiate it from gumball??? i swear we've been screwed over time and time and time and time again by companies becuase they thought we were too stupid for more mind challenging and different stuff.

i mean look at the ico box art for US vs. EU and japan. yikes.

i'm also crazy for these backgrounds.

the thing that both CNSE shows have most in common is the mixed media animation style. however, while TAWOG just took pictures and used those as references for 3d rendered backgrounds, ivandoe literally had WHOLE SETS built specifically for certain episodes, with real tree bark used for trees and just- AAGH ITS SO BEAUTIFUL. i could understand why it's not a full series because the backgrounds themselves had so much work put into them. if they picked it up for a full series then they might've had to take the TAWOG route and make the backgrounds 3D.

after the first 10 episodes came out and europe had a huge ivandoe party in the beginning of 2018, it's as if the show just fizzled out of existence. no news, no nothing. to my knowledge, the only thing CNSE is working on at the moment is eliott from earth. but i would love to see some new ivandoe related-content, that could possibly come to the US and expand the fandom a little. even though i love TAWOG much more, i really feel like i'm the only one still thinking about this show and wishing more people talked about it. i've heard that the show just now in 2019 came to the philippines, so it still has potential to come over here (lmao just watch us be like the last country in the world for ivandoe to get to). this show had so much potential...

i'm also gonna post this on other outlets so people can see it. i don't want this show to forever be overlooked like this.

Historical Development in Illustration

From early cave paintings to the examples digital illustrations we see today, illustration has come a long way over the years!

The Lascaux Caves

Starting at the beginning the Lascaux Caves are a series of caves first discovered in 1940, located in southwestern France. Over 600 parietal wall ‘cave art’ paintings have been discovered on the ceiling and interior walls of the caves. The paintings are mostly of animals and the age of the paintings are thought to be around 17,000 years old. Their importance in the historical development of the illustration sector is because they are thought to be one of the earliest examples of man made illustration.

Middle Ages

In the Middle Ages, narrative pictorials appeared in illuminated manuscripts. Christians believed the sanctity of religious writings were the main reason for the preservation of books and the writing, copying and illuminating of books  happened in places called ‘scriptoria’ in monasteries. 

Der Edelstein

Der Edelstein (The Precious Stone) was published by Albreht Pfister in 1461 and is a book of fables. It has been selected by scholars as being historically and culturally important because it is the first know book to be printed with both text and illustrations using woodcut printing techniques.

The Industrial Revolution

The Industrial Revolution was the transition to industrialised and urban manufacturing processes in Europe and the United States. With the start of the Industrial Revolution in the mid 1700′s, printing technology improved and illustration became more commonly encountered in everyday life. English wood engraver and publisher Thomas Bewick built himself a studio for the creation and printing of commercial illustrations that were used for many purposes suck as educational materials in schools and children’s books.

18th Century 

In the early 1800′s the profession of being an illustrator became a full-time reality with sales of etched or engraved prints through print shops and street side book stalls. This made illustration widely available and affordable. Publications by Charles Dickens and other popular writers soon became fully illustrated. Due to more efficient distribution networks, illustrated newspapers, books and full-colour newspaper comics became an affordable source of entertainment. 

Steamboat Willie

Walt Disney established himself in the illustration sector by making popular cartoon shorts such as Steamboat Willie in 1928. Steamboat Willie was also the first cartoon with sound. This advancement lead to the creation of full-length animated feature films. Snow White in 1937 and Pinocchio in 1940. Both Snow White and Pinocchio took 4 years to produce! 

Good Housekeeping 

The magazine publishing industry grew rapidly in the 1950s after the Great Depression and both World Wars. The 1950s was the birth of Women’s magazines era with publications such as Good Housekeeping and Cosmopolitan. 

Digital Animation

In the 20th century, Walt Disney evolved from feature films into digitally animated films and this is when Disney Pixar was born. Disney Pixar produced modern classics such as Toy Story and Finding Nemo. The gaming industry also evolved significantly and technological advancements lead to video games such as Final Fantasy. The publishers of Marvel comics entered into the movie scene with both live-action and animated features. The relationship between the gaming industry, comic industry and film industry become more connected and illustrators played an important role in many aspects of production. 

iPad 

Apple wished to create a device that was between a laptop and a smartphone. The iPad was born in 2010 and was designed to be better at web browsing and email. The iPad didn’t receive good reviews to begin with and was expected to be a flop for Apple. Wired Magazine labeled it “little more than a giant iPhone.” Apple went on to sell 300,000 iPads in the first few days of it’s release and it broke 2,000,000 sales within two months. What started as a device for web browsing and email has now created a new wave of illustrators. Thanks to technological advancements in the iPad and development of applications such as Procreate, accessories from Apple in the form of the Apple Pencil it has meant that illustrators can create a revolutionary new type of art making it very easy for them to share their work digitally on social media platforms increasing their engagement with consumers.
