recommendations for “local” spots in PR? im going over springbreak and im so excited!!! (anything fun do/ explore besides el yunque and san juan?)

omg i love this questionnnn!!!!

so if you get the chance: RENT. A. CAR. There are so many amazing spots in PR but because the public transportation system here might as well be nonexistent, you need a car to get to most of them. so here is the list of my personal fave spots that you need a car for: (dw i will include another list of things that are more local to san juan and also one more thing)

- Playa Sucia, Cabo Rojo: gorgeous beach, i spent a lot of time there in college. you have to walk a bit to get to the actual beach but it’s so worth it. you can also hike up the cliffs surrounding the beach which is so fun and beautiful. and you can go up to the lighthouse which has the most amazing view.

- Crash Boat beach, Aguadilla: another beach, another college me spot. it’s just really cool, people are always playing music, there’s a big ol pier. just very awesome.

- Toro Verde Adventure Park: ZIPLINE. VERY BIG ZIPLINE THAT TAKES YOU 95 MPH. I believe it’s the longest in the US and the third longest in the entire world. the view while you’re on it is unlike anything i have ever seen before 10/10, taking my bf there this weekend.

- Surfing: my fave surf spots are Domes Beach in Rincon. Jobos Beach in Isabela. and La Punta in San Juan. You can search up surf lessons in these beaches and you’ll get a bunch of instructors.

-La Parguera: Bioluminescent bay. It’s so gorgeous and so worth it

- Piñones: Long strip of road with different spots you can get out in and go to the beach in. It’s littered with a bunch of typical puertorican food stands like fried shit that we love. if you want the real PR experience, go on a weekend

Now for some more local San Juan area things to do:

- Again, Surfing: literally just google surf lessons in san juan and a bunch will pop up

- Distrito T-Mobile: Has a bunch of restaurants and live music, definitely a good spot to just kinda hang out in. There’s a huge arcade there as well as one of my fav restaurants: La Central by Mario Pagan (get the truffle butter on the steak)

-La Placita: Drinks. Legal age is 18 here so if you want to PARTY, go here.

-Calle Loiza: same as la placita but more locals go here methinks

-The Place: my fav burger place ever, it’s in Condado. Build your own burger w really good ingredients 10/10

-Pirilo: amazing pizza place. it’s in old san juan so this might be a bit of a cop out but it’s really good regardless.

-Casa Bacardi: Rum factory, you can take a tour and it’s pretty cool

-Paddle Boarding: you can go paddle boarding in Condado Lagoon, if you’re lucky you might even get to see manatees or turtles!!!

- Metropol: my favorite restaurant. they have a bunch of locations but you can’t go wrong with any of them. typical puertorican and cuban food. fucking delicious i can never get enough. (get the sorullitos you won’t regret it.)

Now for the something extra:

-Culebra and Vieques: You can either take a plane or a ferry to either of these islands. They are the most beautiful islands i have ever seen. Very remote so little to no cell service but genuinely so so so worth it because the stars look so amazing at night it’s like nothing i have ever seen before. also Vieques has a bioluminescent beach as well :)

ik some of these are kind of touristy things and not necessarily local but they are genuinely some of my favorite things to do and i will always always always recommend to do at least one of them.

The Battle of the Puerto Rican Rums, Part 2: Bacardi

The name Bacardi is synonymous with Puerto Rican rum – even if is originally from Cuba. We decided to take a tour of its factory! We combined it with a $75 mixology class, which you can watch in a separate video.

The tour itself was very crowded and not as comprehensive as we expected for such a sprawling factory, but the drinks were great! Interestingly, Bob did this tour in 1994 and it was dirt cheap, maybe $5. How times have changed! Rum tours are now big business, and an obvious revenue stream from tourism. But if you’re on a Puerto Rican vacation, why not? Experiencing rum is an important part of experiencing the local culture. Bacardi offers a number of different tours, ranging in price from $40 to $200.

Normally, to get there, you take a ferry across the water from the ferry terminal in Old San Juan – an awesome experience in its own right! – then grab a quick Uber to the factory in Catano. We went on a Puerto Rican holiday when no ferries were running, and had to drive.

Semana del 4 al 10 de Septiembre

Lunes: Como de costumbre, me levanté sobre la hora y fui tarde al contraturno. Para mi sorpresa, cuando llegue a la esquina los vi a todos esperando, resulta que el profesor no fue y nadie quería arriesgarse a estar toda la mañana al pedo con un reemplazante. Lo mandamos a Enzo a averiguar si realmente el profe no venia, con la escusa de entregar un trabajo. Obviamente no venia, así que cada uno rajo para su casa. A la tarde no fui y embolse 54 kilos de alimento y piedras sanitarias

Martes: A la mañana había mesa de examen, así que German nos aviso que no vayamos (hace como 2 semanas que no voy a taller). A la tarde en Formación Ética, la profesora nos dio una actividad relacionada con un texto sobre una chica que acaba de terminar el secundario y esta en busca de un trabajo. Una de las preguntas era si conociamos a alguien en la situación de la protagonista y automáticamente pensé en Mami. A Instalaciones eléctricas vino una piba de 22 años como reemplazante (pobre, los pendejos la re acosab4n) y nos dijo que también va a venir mañana (automáticamente ya decidí faltar mañana)

Miércoles: A la mañana fuimos a llevarle el pedido a la abuela y fuimos a tribunales para hacer tramites, resulta que es más complejo de lo que parece y que la asistente social junto a las de la comuna se quedaron en el tiempo. A la tarde no fui ni a la escuela ni a ingles y en su lugar fui al chino a hacer la compra semanal

Jueves: Al fin volví al taller, lo mismo de siempre, arranca con un dibujo super complicado y nos da algún trabajo, pero no lo podemos realizar porque se va del taller a dar vueltas y nadie viene a explicarnos como se realizan las cosas. La de matemáticas se olvido corregir las pruebas, empezó a dar repaso de limites (casi me largo a llorar, no me acuerdo de nada) y nos dejo un par de ejercicios mientras le tomaba un examen a un chico que vino a rendir, esa ultima situación se repitió en lengua, estuvimos casi toda la hora sin hacer nada y lo poco que hicimos fue lección oral de los capitulos 13 al 20

Viernes: Fui a fulana y me compre una campera negra de un material parecido al cuero uy un pantalón cargo también del mismo tono. Falte otra vez a la tarde así podía dormir una siesta para guardar energías para la noche. A las 7 de la tarde tomamos el colectivo rumbo a la casa de la abuela y a las 9 nos tomamos un remis para ir al XV. Fue rara la cosa, porque apenas termino de hacer la entrada, empezó el vals (que normalmente se hace a las 12). La entrada fue lasagna y por favor momento Garfield, estaba exquisita. Obvio el plato principal tenia que ser un pollo que no comí y que se lo di a Mami. El postre tardo como una hora en venir

Sabado: Después de la cena todo fue costa abajo, UN EMBOLE. Ta bien que yo detesto la cumbia y el cuarteto, pero ni un tema de mujer me podías poner dj chorro? Estuve el resto de la noche en la mesa, a Mami tampoco le gusto la fiesta y se fue a sentar conmigo. En un momento aparecieron unos robots que eran iguales a Jennifer Parker, es impactante los primeros 2 minutos pero después te aburre, la pizza la dieron como a las 4 cuando yo ya estaba con unas ganas de irme. Cuando nos estábamos por ir, la perdimos por un momento a la tía porque los otros 2 nose querían ir (terminaron yendose en un 3er remis aparte). Que LINDO que era el remisero que nos toco (me dio un ataque de hipo y pensó que era porque había tomado mucho, no, solo 2 vasos de gancia, uno de sidra y un bacardi) cuando llegamos, resulta que la abuela no había preparado nada para que nos quedemos, Mami furiosa, dijo que nos fueramos a tomar el cole, Y PARA REDONDEAR LA TORTURA, en una parada de 14 de Febrero, se subieron todos los tarados de la escuela alcoholizados mal (uno me pregunto si venia de trabajar y re que tenis toda la cara con glitter a lo Euphoria).Me desperté a las 12 pero no me movilice hasta las 13, tipo 17 fui al super del reintegro y a la salida me la cruce a Agos, mas tarde fui a la nueva verdulería

What is your favorite family dish? Who makes it the best? Why? 

I think my favorite family dish is just the classic arroz con habichuelas with fried chicken or bistec encebollao’ & of course, tostones on the side. It never disappoints! My grandmother definitely wins the award for this dish.

What local restaurant do you recommend for us to dine at that will give us a scrumptious taste of your culture? What do we absolutely have to order? 

I would totally recommend Mofongo Restaurant in Calle 8! You definitely need to get the Alcapurrias and a Mofongo or Trifongo with your protein and sauce of preference. The Arroz Manposteao’ is delicious too!

When visiting the country of your ethnic/cultural origin what should we do as tourists? (Visit a particular site? Purchase an item from a specific vendor?) 

You should definitely visit Old San Juan and get ice cream/sorbet from the street carts. My favorite flavor is coconut! They look like this:

When it comes to the beaches, I totally recommend planning on visiting Culebra or Vieques for breath-taking beaches and more “island vibes” experience.  In Culebra, you should visit Playa Flamenco and in Vieques my favorite is Playa Caracas. You can also rent a boat for a day, or get a catamaran ticket to visit Culebrita or Cayo Icacos just for the day.

If you like hiking, waterfalls and mountain views, definitely visit El Yunque National Forest.

Another great experience is to visit the Casa Bacardi rum distillery and take a tour around the facility, take some mixology classes, tastings, etc.

Eso si, esta vez no salió volando la Mastercard directo a las Cataratas del Niagara, ni a Katherine se le olvidó el café en el techo de la camioneta (esta van no era alquilada 🤣🤣) @vickyhcabm conoció a sus tías en la versión R y no PG o todo usuario y agregamos otras cosas a la bitácora de aventuras. Nos faltaron días para tantas cosas por hacer, ya sabemos que para salir con Katherine necesitamos lonchera porque es la tía de Kike (tiene hambre cada 2 horas), el Bacardi fue desterrado de mi menú junto al tequila (no necesité alka seltzer 🥃🌹 pero como dice Tulio Marquez vaina pa mala) y regresé a mi casa recargada, tranquila y feliz de que no importa en que rincón del mundo estemos, Dios me bendijo con las mejores amigas!
