'Cassiel's Servant' Headcanon...
So Selwyn de Gaunte was definitely in love in Joscelin, right?

Okay Cassiel's Servant
I see you.
@jaquelinecarey if we're doing this.
I would have Kushiel's Chosen from the PoV of Phedre's Boys
And Kushiel's Avatar from Melisande's.
All that and nothing else, my lady

Phèdre nó Delaunay entered the library, and in that moment, I had the strangest sensation. It must be that a drifting cloud occluding the sun passed onward, for a sudden burst of brilliance lit the room. It illuminated Phèdre's face, making her appear to shine with glory inside and out, piercing my heart with inexplicable longing.

I can't wait to see his internal thoughts and reaction when he finds out he's being assigned to guard a servant of Namaah.

Wait sorry theres a cassiel's series? Is it any good? Who is it about? Namaah:s wasn't quite as strong as Kushiels but I still loved it enough I want more in the world
Yeah, I didn't enjoy the Naamah's series at all. The two Kushiel's ones were AMAZING, though, so I remain convinced she can still write books I'll super love. I haven't finished Cassiel's Servant yet but I'm enjoying it so far; she's managed to avoid a couple of tropes I dislike already and the characters are strong.
I never liked Joscelin as a character and wasn't that happy about a whole spin-off with him, but he's different when you're not looking at him through Phedre's eyes. I'm liking him so far.

Rare actual fandompost from behind the blog but I've been listening to Cassiel's Servant and I'm going to chew glass and maybe finally make good on my threat to write a smutty ficlet about Jocelyn and Phedre sitting Elua's Vigil together and then fucking hard and loving about it

i loved cassiel's servant BUT
whenever joscelin says that phedre gets this look in her eye "like she's listening to distant music" (which tends to happen at points relevant to the plot) it just made me think of this

Cassiel's Servant by Jacqueline Carey, copyright 2023
Chapter Twenty
Anguissettes heal fast is like... a very needful thing, or the original set would NOT have been a trilogy.
I do feel badly for Joscelin at times. Like Phedre sneaking off and then demanding his silence.
Oh. That was a good exchange between them.
And then the trio, discussing Delauney. I love them so.
HUH. Delauney was surprised by the answer about Longest Night.
OH. Seeing Melisande through Joscelin's eyes. How much is it me knowing, how much is the Author conveying unwittingly, and how much is literally the character seeing, unknowingly, the edges of trouble, with his different perspective?

I'm reading Jacqueline Carey's newest book and realizing I write Dick in a very similar way to the way she writes Joscelin.
I don't know what to do with this information.

I'm catching up on my minutes for the reading challenge this morning. There's classical music in the background, Cassiel's Servant open on my lap, and this sweet boy for company. 🥰

'Cassiel's Servant' was a delight. If you're a fan of spicy fantasy romance, and not familiar with Carey's original trilogy about a young woman trapped by desire into a web of intrigue and betrayal (or to be reductive, fantasy polyamorous BDSM in fantasy angel-touched France), you should really pick up Kushiel's Dart and check the series out. I thought they were fun and thrilling and faintly ridiculous when I read them (I didn't know I was ace at the time; it explains so many things); then I was extremely delighted to find out that she was returning so many years later with this book. This is the male love-interest's point of view - a devoted and celibate warrior sworn to the service of a woman he doesn't understand, but learns to see her many exceptional qualities - which is to say, extremely catnip for my favorite tropes. Anyway, I loved it, and I think it's readable as a standalone, so if you're curious, pick it up! (It doesn't cover the entire trilogy too, so it wouldn't even spoil how it all turns out if that's a concern. :)

Will finally owning the book that I've been willing into existence for at least 10 years be enough for my brain to allow me to read fiction again? We will see!
