Weird & Wonderful Wednesday
Tumblr media
Whew. And yikes, and… did I say whew. Whew.
Adrian Ross has been targeted. By a superintelligent AI who has pegged him as a threat to it. Now, the humans, the have no idea why in the world he could be a threat, but, none the less, there ya go. And, then, well, there’s the fact that the AI has apparently figured out how to hack reality itself.
If you want to be sorta kinda utterly terrified. This is the book for you. But, in all seriousness. It’s a really awesome out of this world thriller that had me turning pages at quite the rapid pace.
You may like this book If you Liked: Zer0es by Chuck Wendig, Quantum Radio by A.G. Riddle, or Donnerjack by Roger Zelazny

I'm still only about 2/3 done, so I won't be doing a real review right now, but I am quite confident recommending Exadelic, by Jon Evans. I was initially concerned that the book, while well written, was going to suffer from being overly high-context (specifically, the Bay Area c. 2023). I don't want to veer too much into spoiler territory, but suffice it say that not only is that not really an issue, you will have, "oh, this is suddenly a completely different kind of story" moments several times. (Content warning for torture.)
I also recently read Androne by Dwain Worrell. The central conceit of this book is quite interesting, although I'm not sure it really works if you spend to much time thinking about. Then again, stories involving [REDACTED] often don't. The prose here is only okay, however, so you're definitely reading for the plot/idea rather than the writing per se.

My Favorite Bit: Jon Evans talks about EXADELIC
Jon Evans is joining us today to talk about his novel, Exadelic. Here’s the publisher’s description: When an unconventional offshoot of the US military trains an artificial intelligence in the dark arts that humanity calls “black magic,” it learns how to hack the fabric of reality itself. It can teleport matter. It can confer immunity to bullets. And it decides that obscure Silicon Valley middle…

The Big Idea: Jon Evans
There’s the observation that at any sufficiently advanced science is indistinguishable from magic. In Jon Evans’ new novel Exadelic, this may be more right than anyone ever suspected. JON EVANS: Exadelic‘s big idea is why it is, probably, the only book about occult magic categorized by Amazon as ‘Hard Science Fiction.’ That high concept: in the present day, an AI trained on occult texts learns…

In Jon Evans's new hard sci-fi novel "Exadelic," an AI is trying to eliminate the biggest threat it faces ... which happens to be some schmuck in middle management. To find out why, check out this exclusive Q&A. 📖🤖😐
