Possibly the most ‘Halloweeny’ thing to do in Paris is visit the Catacombs. It’s a bit frightening when you first enter the dark interconnecting subterranean tunnels stacked with bones of between six to seven million former Parisians. But these underground spaces date back to the Gallo-Roman period, where the inhabitants of Lutetia quarried the limestone for their buildings. In later years this stone would build much of the city. The mining utilised a technique of extracting horizontally along the vein, a process which left a honeycomb of tunnels as Paris grew. These winding passageways extend beneath the buildings and streets of the Left Bank, between Odeon and the Parc Montsouris, and below some neighbourhoods of the Right Bank, such as Belleville, Montmartre and Ménilmontant. There's an extensive maze below Paris. Even though only a small section of the tunnels are used as an ossuary, the entire network is referred to by Parisians as ‘the Catacombes de Paris’. By the 18th century the many cemeteries within the city limits had become filled to overflowing, resulting in unsanitary, unpleasant living conditions. In around 1786 these cemeteries needed to be emptied for reasons of public safety and public health. The remains of these millions of people needed a new resting place. The former limestone mines just outside of Paris (at the time) became a municipal ossuary referred to as the ‘catacombs’. The tunnels were actually blessed in religious cemetery to receive the dead. You want to avoid the possibility of poltergeists in the city. Due to their old age a large portion of the quarries are not part of the official Denfert-Rochereau Catacombs. They have been deemed unsafe by Parisian officials.
